Reinhold Friedl ist Komponist und Pianist, der Direktor des Ensembles Zeitkratzer, das sich an Interpretationen einiger Größen des Experimentellen versucht hat, die durchaus beeindruckend genannt werden können. Darunter Lou Reeds Metal Machine Music, die frühen Kraftwerk, Whitehouse und Column One. Das wiederum mit einem klassisch akustischen Instrumentarium, welches selbst höchst synthetische Klänge verblüffend echt nachbilden kann. Friedl war Gastprofessor an einigen europäischen Universitäten und ist Spezialist in Sachen Iannis Xenakis. Wie diesem geht es Friedl um die Musik und um die Erweiterung dieser und ihres Begriffs. Dafür geht er auch immer wieder noch einen Schritt weiter.

Dieses Mal traf er auf Martin Siewert. Auch ein umtriebiger Mensch, der mit vielen Projekten unterwegs ist und damit von sich hören macht. Am bekanntesten dürfte hier wohl die Band Radian sein. Eine der wenigen wirklich spannenden Rockbands, die seit dem Jahr 2000 über die Genregrenzen hinaus Ungewöhnliches produziert. Auch Siewert spielte schon mit einigen Größen der Experimental- und Improvisationsmusik. Und nun spielen beide zusammen. Friedl das Piano und Siewert Gitarre nebst flächenspannender Elektronik.

Das Resultat der Zusammenarbeit heißt Lichtung. Ein aus drei Stücken bestehendes Album mit einer Spielzeit von mehr als 45 Minuten, das zunächst mit einem infernalischen Girtarrendröhnen beginnt und sich, gebrochen von Klaviertönen, folgend durch die Stücke schleppt. Im Verlauf ist oft nicht deutlich zu unterscheiden, ob nun das präparierte Klavier oder die ebenso effektvolle Gitarre zum Einsatz kommt. Grad der beindruckend weite Dynamikbereich gibt hier zu denken. Etwa dass es mittlerweile unüblich geworden ist, in der Musik auf nahezu stille Stellen zu setzen. Womöglich aus Furcht vor dem Weiterklicken zum nächsten Titel. Nach dahin, wo mehr los, alles auf Anschlag gestellt ist und jedes noch so kleine Instrument den hörbaren Frequenzbereich vollständig ausfüllt.

Auf dieser Lichtung muss genau hingehört werden. Da ist dann ein Schaben, sind Kontakttöne, stehende Flächen, die fragmentiert zu Erdschollen werden. Da verwischen die Grenzen. Die zwei Saiteninstrumente laufen manchmal sogar ineinander. Da schrammt oder fiept mal das Klavier, mal die Gitarre. Mal spielt das eine Instrument Einzeltöne, wobei das andere die Fläche dazu unterlegt, mal ist es andersherum. Das Ganze ist manchmal Jazz und Avantgarde, mal Musique Concrete und mal sind Anleihen an den frühen Krautrock zu hören. Insgesamt also ein Album, das es in sich hat. (awk)

These Sicilian teens have stirred the European scene, dropping their debut album Dull Boy on Disasters By Choice, and hitting the road across Italy and the UK—all within the past year.

The Whistling Heads’ new single, Shut Me Up, is an anthem of embracing melancholy as a transformative force. Anchored by a jittery synth riff and grounded by robust basslines and drumming, “Shut Me Up” echoes the raw angst of new wave, recast in monochrome for the modern age. It’s a track that captures the spirit of those who find strength in their sorrow, turning introspection into a potent form of rebellion.

The lyrics for the song express a longing for emotional support and understanding, repeatedly asking for love and guidance. There is a desire for someone to show the way and provide direction, emphasizing a persistent state of being down and feeling lost.

“The video (directed by Gabriele Costa) showcases our experiences during our first UK tour, which taught us to be grateful for what we have in our lives, including our difficulties and insecurities,” says the band.

It’s a spirited musical homage to subcultural existence amidst a predominantly bland pop culture landscape.

With the album’s release The Speed of Sound also presents the video for Trickledown. Trickledown economics, the idea that tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations will benefit all by stimulating investment and job creation, has long been debated. Critics argue it exacerbates income inequality, as wealth tends to accumulate at the top, failing to reach lower-income individuals. Proponents claim it encourages economic growth and benefits everyone. In today’s society, the growing wealth gap and economic disparities highlight the contentious impact of trickledown policies on broader social and economic structures.

“This could easily have been a traditional angry punk song, but gentle smoothness fits the soothing lie behind the Theory,” says John Armstrong. “I find the concept of Trickledown Economics bizarre. The idea of everyone owing their economic wellbeing to the existence of the mega-rich is pure sleight of hand fantasy; that they have amassed so much stashed away itself demonstrates it isn’t reaching further down. The stanza borrowed from Shelley’s Masque Of Anarchy (1819) in the middle section shows the general situation hasn’t changed in 200 years.”

Here, the band reveals another side with a delicately haunting and spacious sound, characterized by a soft-hued tonal palette enriched with just the right amount of reverb. Trickledown presents a subtly expressed and quietly understated critique of economic theory, wrapped in a smooth, silk-like ballad. The harmoniously mellow and hypnotically absorbing experience feels like fireworks in slow motion, with lyrics that contrast sharply, cutting through the gentle melody with precision.

The album kicks off with an 80s radio pop-style bang, showcasing buoyant guitar-driven rhythms and the dual vocals of West Wind. It continues onward, seamlessly through the acoustic guitar-driven groove of SS-100-X, the spacious iridescence of Eight Fourteen Monday, the lively ascendence of The Party Sniper, the glowing radioactivity metaphor of Half-Life to the bright uplifting dementia and identity-loss focused Mind Palace. While the bouncing vibe of Bodysnatchers reminds us to stay awake and not slip into the drabness of normalcy, the crunching melodic punch of Clickbait zings into the typewriter introduction of Yet Another Tuesday, onwards to the punkifed rhythm and blues of So Faux and the closing acoustic riot of Question Time.

Die aus zwei Mitgliedern bestehende französische Occult Black/Death Metal Band ACOD ist zurück, um von ihrer Reise auf die andere Seite zu berichten mit ihrem neuen Album „Versets Noirs“. Es bereits das 6. Album, ich bin aber erst mit dem Vorgänger auf ACOD aufmerksam geworden.

Was für Musik bekommen wir auf dem Album, welches ihr euch in voller Länge u.a. bei YouTube anhören könnt? Wer es düster, mächtig, bedrohlich und rituell mag, ist hier genau richtig. ACOD wandern sowohl auf den typischen Black/Death Metal Pfaden als auch immer wieder davon weg. Damit reichern sie zum einen ihr düsteres Klangspektrum an, auf der anderen Seite kommen sie auch immer wieder zurück, und werden nicht zu extravagant. Die Songs machen auch mal Pausen oder gehen in untypische Gefilde, z.B. kleine Einsprengsel, die dem ganzen auch mal einen orientalischen Touch verleihen. Typische Black Metal Vocals werden durch Sprachpassagen ergänzt. Die Stücke sind voller Abwechslung in Geschwindigkeit und Atmosphäre und erzeugen viele unterschiedliche dunkle Stimmungen über das Album verteilt.

Mit dem Opener erhaltet ihr schon einen guten Einblick. Zwar ist er mit 20 Minuten für meinen Geschmack etwas lang geraten, hat aber viele richtig gute Passagen. Mein persönliches Highlight ist dann das nachfolgende „The Son of a God (The Heir of Divine Blood)“. Dieser Track hat die passende Länge und das passende Maß an Abwechslung aus dem düsteren Klangkosmos von ACOD zu bieten. Die nächsten zwei Stücke sind auch gut, kommen an die ersten beiden aber nicht mehr ran. Und dann sind wir auch schon beim Schlussstück des 42 Minuten Albums. Mit „Black Trip“ haben die Franzosen ein Cover von SAMAEL eingespielt, passt sehr gut zum Stil der Band.

Fazit:
ACOD klingen anders und haben etwas Eigenständiges und Besonderes. Genretypische Gitarren sowie orchestrierte Klangbilder werden hier abwechslungsreich zusammengefügt. Für Fans, die in ihrer Playlist z.B. SepticFlesh, Rotting Christ oder Samael haben. (eller)

Wer meint, ein Projekt wie Brutalismus 3000 werde seinem Namen gerecht, sollte sich sicher erst einmal Emptyset anhören. Nur so kann der Begriff in seiner zumindest musikalischen Dimension annähernd verstanden werden: Rhythmische Schlaggewitter; hart wie Beton, oder etwas, das auf diesen immer wieder mit aller Wucht prallt. Auch wenn der Begriff aus der Architektur kommt und nichts weiter mit dem zu tun hat, was im Deutschen als brutal bezeichnet wird, sondern rohen Beton (béton brut) meint und einen idealisierten Anspruch an ethisch soziale Aspekte, sowie an Material und Konstruktion, ist das Bild von grauem, stilistisch schnörkellosem und harten Beton doch recht treffend für die Musik von Emptyset. Die nämlich ist genau so grau wie grob. Und eben hart wie Beton. Da gibt es nichts, was die hochgezogenen Wände in irgendeiner Form schmückt.

Emptyset wurde von Paul Purgas und James Ginzburg 2005 gegründet. Das Projekt ist in Bristol zuhause. Seit ihrer Gründung wurden sieben Longplayer produziert und fünfzehn EPs. Die letzte und aktuellste der beiden ist die auf Subtext Ende Oktober letzten Jahres erschienene Ash. Sechs Titel, die den Unterschied machen. Und zwar auf kurzer Distanz. Sämtliche Titel sind mit einer Ausnahme nicht länger als drei Minuten.

Sechs Monolithe auf engem Raum. Ein Neubaugebiet. Aus Stahlbeton.

Wie im Brutalismus üblich ist die Ausarbeitung der einzelnen Stücke, so wie ihre Gliederung, grob. Die Musik ist überaus kraftvoll. Die Komponenten sind zu Teilen verzerrt. Insgesamt kohärent und stabil. Im Vergleich allerdings ist der Emtyset-Beton um einiges anfälliger für Verschmutzung und raschen Zerfall. Dunkel, dreckig und hart. Doch das macht ihn eben auch spannend. (awk)

Die Death Metal-Band OBSCENE hat mit “Agony & Wounds” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist nach “The Inhabitable Dark” (2020) und “…from Dead Horizon to Dead Horizon” (2022) das dritte Album der US-Amerikaner aus Indianapolis.

“Agony & Wounds” wurde gemeinsam mit Noah Buchanan in den Mercinary Studios aufgenommen und gemixt und von Dan Lowndes gemastert. Das Cover-Artwork stammt von Brad Moore. Release-Termin ist der 12. Juli 2024 via Nameless Grave Records. Vorab gibt es den Track “The Reaper’s Blessing” zu hören.

(Spoiler: No, it doesn’t) The world’s biggest metal band METALLICA has teamed up with some real top-notch acts to bring you two nights of uninterrupted fun. Why the one-day break in between the gigs? That will remain the secret of the party hosts (extended recovery time), but the fact is it will be a massive set of shows where METALLICA will have fun by playing two totally different setlists. Also, the stage build will feature an enlarged snake pit for the die-hard (and most affluent) fans, to offer them a truly immersive experience. And immersive it was indeed. You could rightfully talk about at an entire city takeover. Everywhere in the city you saw flocks of middle-aged people sporting their favourite band’s merchandise, enjoying the sunny springtime in Munich.

“Behind Closed Doors” wurde mit einem Cover-Artwork von Paolo Girardi ausgestattet und wird noch im Laufe des Jahres 2024 via Transcending Obscurity Records erscheinen.

The Phantom Carriage, a 1921 Swedish silent film directed by Victor Sjöström, is a seminal work in cinematic history, known for its innovative special effects and narrative depth. The story, based on Selma Lagerlöf’s novel, revolves around the legend that the last person to die each year must drive Death’s carriage, collecting souls. The film explores themes of redemption and moral consequences through its protagonist, David Holm, a drunkard who undergoes a profound transformation. Its influence extends to many filmmakers, including Ingmar Bergman.

Over a century after its debut, the enigmatic Icelandic darkwave trio Kælan Mikla (Sólveig Matthildur Kristjánsdóttir, Margrét Rósa Dóru Harrýsdóttir and Laufey Soffía) and their countryman Bardi Johannsson have crafted a chilling new score for The Phantom Carriage.

The film, accompanied by this freshly penned score, premiered to a full house at the Transylvania International Film Festival 2023, held in a gothic church. Bolstered by the success of this debut, Kælan Mikla and Johannsson have released the score on vinyl, with plans to perform it live at additional venues.

The collaboration between Bardi Johannsson and Kælan Mikla blends haunting synths, ethereal vocals, and precise drum programming to forge a sound steeped in folklore and the mystical, all while straddling the line between traditional thriller motifs and brooding darkwave.

The Phantom Carriage by Kælan Mikla & Bardi Johannsson

Kælan Mikla burst onto the scene in 2013, originally forming to compete in a poetry contest which they won, sparking their foray into music. The trio quickly made a name for themselves in Reykjavik’s lively underground music scene, and by 2015, they had unleashed “Kalt,” a track that drew both national and international acclaim.

Known for their dynamic live shows, Kælan Mikla has charmed audiences worldwide, capturing the interest of The Cure’s Robert Smith. Smith, impressed by their performances, has repeatedly invited them to grace the stages of festivals he’s organized in both the US and UK. The band has also toured widely, appearing alongside notable acts like Ville Valo, Alcest, and Placebo, further solidifying their place in the global music community. Over the years, they’ve put out four albums through Toronto-based Artoffact Records.

Bardi Johannsson, the multi-talented Icelandic composer, musician, and writer, has carved out a distinctive niche in the music world. He is widely recognized for his involvement with groups like Bang Gang, Starwalker (his joint project with JB Dunckel of AIR), and Lady & Bird, which he formed with Keren Ann.

Johannsson has earned accolades for his extensive work on film scores, contributing to movies such as Nils Tavernier’s “De toutes nos forces,” David Guy Levy’s “Would You Rather” (in collaboration with Daniel Hunt of Ladytron), and Michele Civetta’s “Agony.” His expertise extends beyond films to encompass trailers, TV series, advertisements, documentaries, and theatre, collaborating with national theaters across Iceland and France. His compositions, often infused with a deep, haunting beauty, are regularly performed by orchestras across Europe, evoking powerful visual imagery through music.

Throughout his career, Johannsson has also partnered with a range of artists in roles as a co-composer, producer, or mixer. His notable collaborations include work with Keren Ann, Anthony Gonzalez (M83), JB Dunckel (AIR, Tomorrow’s World), Helen Marnie (Ladytron), Phoebe Killdeer (Nouvelle Vague), Sia Furler, Ólafur Arnalds, Anggun, and many others

Es ist der erste Release des neuformierten Duos, welches aus Andrea “Frater Orion” Falaschi (DEATHLESS LEGACY, MOTUS TENEBRAE), der auch das Cover-Artwork gestaltet hat, und Daniele Ciranna (MOTUS TENEBRAE) besteht.

„Revenant“ ist ein Konzeptalbum über einen alten orthodoxen Priester, der gegen seinen Willen zu einem Vampir wurde. In the neon-lit labyrinth of a metropolis paved with the dreams of fallen angels, paranoia thrums like an electric pulse through the veins of the city. It’s a world where algorithmic data flows in invisible currents, where every shadow hides a watchful eye nestled in the palm of a hand, and every whisper is etched in a clandestine communique, signifying a potential threat. The line between reality and illusion blurs like swirling vertigo, leaving its inhabitants teetering on the edge of a digital abyss. Trust is a rare commodity in this fragmented reality, a fleeting ghost haunting the back alleys of cyberspace. Here, the only certainty is that everyone is watching, and no one is safe.

With this in mind, Los Angeles’ Brian DaMert and Brian Tarney, a pair of musicians who helm the new wave outfit Sacred Skin, unleash their latest single, “Paranoid.” No strangers to fearless explorations of 80s-style anthemic pop music, they now make their next bold strike with the release of their first single of 2024 through Artoffact Records. This release heralds their second full-length album, which looms on the horizon like a sunrise on a California beach, promising a journey through a retro-infused dreamscape fueled by the contraband stowed in the glovebox of a dayglo-colored vintage Porsche.

“Paranoid” arrives loaded, with lyrical depth and unreserved instrumental pairings, creating a veritable maelstrom of sound. It is propulsive and disorienting, drawing listeners into a windswept surrender. The throbbing bass, guitar hooks, icy keys, and reverb-drenched vocals create a debris-laden soundscape that leaves you uncertain of where the song will take you next, except onward into the heart of the storm.

In a description that befits a trailer for an 80s sci-fi action movie, narrated by Don LaFontaine, the band has released the following statement to promote the single:

“In a world where the lines of fact and fiction have become increasingly blurred, it’s important to keep an unhealthy level of paranoia.”

Last year marked a significant chapter for Sacred Skin as they inked a deal with Artoffact Records, dropped their haunting single “Bitter Heart,” and reissued their pivotal album “The Decline Of Pleasure” on CD. This steady stream of singles and vibrant live performances culminated in the release of their first full-length album, “The Decline of Pleasure,” in May 2022. Die Black Metal-Band PARADISE IN FLAMES hat mit “Blindness” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist das fünfte Album der Brasilianer und wird am 14. Juni 2024 via Xaninho Discos / Demoncratic Records erscheinen.

Picture yourself on a boulevard paved with daydreamers, sipping your coffee as the world ambles by. Here, you play a solitary game of “Never Have I Ever,” your thoughts drifting like autumn leaves scraping the cobblestones as time contracts and diolates. In this city of strangers, you ponder your choices, the paths taken, and those left unexplored. Each question is a silent musing, pushing that metaphorical rock up the hill like Sisyphus, finding solace in the absurdist comedy of life. Such is the kind of ponderance that is the new single “New Have I Ever.”

“There is a joy to be found in accepting how pointless things are,” muses Chaz Costello of Dallas-based post-punk ensemble Sculpture Club. “Nothing matters” leads you down a road. Despair is the first stop for many of us but if you keep going you end up at absurdity. You can look back and realize how silly and absolutely ridiculous things are. I ebb and flow between the two, like most of us. But this song is my representation of the latter and the power I’ve found in it. Plus the joy and humor of being the last of a family name.”

Sculpture Club carved their niche with a party-punk spirit that shimmered like stardust, delivering performances that glittered with a raw, unfiltered energy. In the dimly lit venues of Salt Lake City and Dallas, their shows erupted in confetti and chaos, a dazzling display of rock ‘n’ roll bravado that seared itself into the memories of those who witnessed it. This audacious approach became their hallmark, defining a style that was both fearless and uniquely theirs, laying the groundwork for their evolution and growth.

Amid the tempest of creativity that defines the life of a musician, Chaz Costello of Sculpture Club navigates with a fervent dedication that borders on the obsessive. His reflections reveal a tunnel vision, an all-consuming focus that blurs the world beyond the music. In this storm of creation, Costello’s existence becomes inseparable from his art, his very essence channeled into every note and lyric. This relentless drive compels him to confront the shadows of his own identity, to ponder what parts of himself might have been eclipsed by his unwavering devotion to the craft.

Expressing these aspects of Costello is the video for “Never Have I Ever,” a reverie that oscillates between solitary scenes of someone lost in a private world—jamming, bed rotting, doomscrolling—and the communal energy of a live performance. This stark juxtaposition illuminates the chasm between the isolation of one’s room and the shared euphoria of the stage. In one moment, there’s the dream of standing in the spotlight, enveloped in camaraderie; in another, the ritual of applying makeup, a preparatory act laden with hope. At its core, the video underscores a profound longing to bridge the gap through music, to transform solitary reverie into collective experience.

Im November 2021 ist mit “Siren Head” die erste Single der Band erschienen. “Mein siebenjähriger Sohn liebt es, Gruselgeschichten über eine Kreatur namens “Siren Head” zu sehen”, erklärt Joshua Nassaru Ward. “Es stellte sich heraus, dass viele Kinder in seinem Alter in diese Monster vernarrt sind, also wollten wir unsere Interpretation von Siren Head auf der Grundlage des Künstlers Trevor Henderson schreiben.”

Die Death Metal-Band KRYPTICY hat mit “The Non-Return” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist nach “Hideous Being” das zweite Album der Spanier aus Malaga rund um Bandgründer, Gitarrist und Sänger Alex Guerrero (REBEL SOULS). Release-Termin ist der 22. Juli 2024 via Memento Mori. Vorab gibt es den Track “Hypatia’s Heresy” zu hören.

WITHIN TEMPTATION veröffentlichen am 21. Juni 2024 ein Livealbum auf BluRay/DVD, CD und Vinyl:  „Worlds Collide Tour, Live in Amsterdam“ wurde am 29. November 2022 im Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam mitgeschnitten, zum Album gibt es 64-seitiges Hardcover-Artbook. Einen audiovisuellen Eindruck verschafft nun der Mitschnitt der Single “The Reckoning”, bei der auch EVANESCENCE-Sängerin Amy Lee zu hören ist.

Und die nächste Tour steht bereits an: WITHIN TEMPTATION stellen Herbst 2024 ihr aktuelles Album “Bleed Out” vor, in Deutschland sind sieben Konzerte geplant. Als Support sind ANNISOKAY und BLIND8 dabei, außerdem wird der ukrainische Produzent und Sänger ALEX YARMAK als Gastkünstler auftreten.

Die Pole-Position ist es leider nicht geworden, aber immerhin schon zum zweiten Mal in der Solokarriere das Treppchen: SLASH landet mit “Orgy Of The Damned” auf Position zwei und legt damit im Vergleich zum Vorgänger “4” (2022, #4) sogar ein bisschen zu. Dabei wähnt sich der Gitarrist in bester Gesellschaft, erreicht doch KERRY KING mit seinem Solodebüt “From Hell I Rise” seinerseits Platz drei. Ganz leicht abwärts geht es zwar für Peter Tägtgrens PAIN, insgesamt aber bleibt “I Am” mit einem 33. Rang aber konstant: “Coming Home” erreichte 2016 die 25. Nicht ganz so rosig läuft es hingegen für COMBICHRIST, deren “CMBCRST” auf Nummer 40 doch ein erkennbar schwächeres Ergebnis einfährt, als es “One Fire” (2019, #13) seinerzeit getan hat. Dafür freut sich die Death-Metal-Band GATECREEPER mit “Dark Superstition” über ihren ersten Charterfolg in Deutschland (#60).

Neuerscheinungen der Kalenderwoche 21
Ein Überraschungsrelease und vorerst wohl nur digital erreichte uns diese Woche: BRING ME THE HORIZON haben die Veröffentlichung von “Post Human: NeX GEn” nur 24 Stunden vorher bekannt gegeben. Auch ROTTING CHRIST haben mit “Pro Xristoy” in einer sonst relativ langsamen Woche neue Musik am Start.

Die Psychedelic Black Metal-Band ORANSSI PAZUZU meldet sich mit einer neuen Single zurück: “Muuntautuja” gibt es als Musikvideo bei YouTube. Übersetzt bedeutet der Songtitel “Gestaltwandler”; fernerhin erklären die Finnen:

“Nach drei Jahren langsamer Entstehung und erleuchtender Raum-Zeit-Experimente, begrüßt bitte ‘Muuntautuja – Der Gestaltwandler’, ein neuer Song aus unserem kommenden Album. Lasst ihn eure Schädel zum Nichts öffnen und euch in den berauschenden Zustand der Verwandlung führen.”

Das Debüt der Band, „Missa Pro Defunctis“ (2020), mit einem Bläsertrio und einem 12-köpfigen Streicherensemble, wurde auf Vinyl veröffentlicht und war innerhalb eines Tages ausverkauft. Nach diesem Erfolg veröffentlichte LAMENTARI „Nihilitatis“ und „Clavis Aurea“, beides limitierte Editionen, die innerhalb einer Stunde nach Veröffentlichung von eifrigen Fans vergriffen waren. Mit ihrer innovativen Herangehensweise an symphonischen Black Metal fesseln LAMENTARI das Publikum weiterhin mit ihrem dunklen und majestätischen Sound.

Die Veröffentlichung von „Ex Umbra In Lucem“ umfasst ein noch tieferes Eintauchen in die abgründigen Klänge des großen Orchesters mit Bläsern, Holzbläsern und Streichern, die in den legendären AIR Studios in London aufgenommen wurden (bekannt für Filmmusik wie „Dune“ und „All Quiet on the Western Front“ und genutzt von Künstlern wie Coldplay, Radiohead, Paul McCartney und Adele).

Wir kennen es ja: Mit jedem Sequel steigt der Einsatz. Es ist eine Art ungeschriebenes Gesetz, vor dem sich auch WORMWOOD beugen. Behandelte „Nattarvet“ (2019) noch eine große Hungersnot und „Arkivet“ (2021) folgerichtig den Untergang der Zivilisation, schließt die „Todestrilogie“ der Skandinavier nun mit dem Ende des Universums. „The Star“ präsentiert sich indes keineswegs so düster, wie die Thematik nahelegen würde. Stattdessen durchlebt der melodische Post Black Metal eine Vielzahl von Gemütszuständen, welchen wir eine gewisse Tragik nicht absprechen können.

Wehmütige Melodiebögen begleiten berstende Wutausbrüche, wenn sich im Opener „Stjärnfall“ die schwindende Hoffnung in Frontmann Nines giftigen Screams manifestiert. Den melancholischen Unterton aber füttert Tobias Rydsheim nicht nur mit seiner einfühlsamen Leadgitarre, auch die Synthesizer zeichnen im zurückgenommenen Mittelteil ein fast schon andächtiges Szenario. Hier lösen sich WORMWOOD bereitwillig vom Black Metal, den sie kurzerhand um Post-Rock-Eskapaden ergänzen, bevor im Finale eine Art Kinderchor für ein wenig Geborgenheit sorgt.

“The Star” besticht teils mit wunderschöner Leadgitarre
Ganz so ausladend geht „The Star“ nicht immer zu Werke: Obwohl Laut-Leise-Dynamik genretypisch immer ein wichtiges Stilelement im Kosmos der Schweden ist, verfolgen „Liminal“ und „A Distant Glow“ im Allgemeinen einen eher geradlinigen Ansatz. Melodie und ein Hauch von Epik fehlt selbstredend auch hier nicht, wenn WORMWOOD ihren charakteristischen Sound als leicht verdauliche Happen servieren. Indem in Ersterem noch die Gitarre mit ein paar rockigen Soli den Ton angibt, anschließend aber in „Galactic Blood“ die Keyboards wieder stärker in den Vordergrund rücken, bleibt die Platte selbst in Anbetracht des zumeist eher gemächlichen Tempos kurzweilig.

Dass Drummer Tatu Kerttula zwischendurch die Eindringlichkeit mittels wohlplatzierter Blastbeats hochschraubt, kommt „The Star“ dennoch gelegen. Besonders die ausladenden Stücke à la „Thousand Doorless Rooms“, welches darüber hinaus mit wunderschönen Leads besticht, entwickeln durch diesen Kontrast erst ihre Identität zu Ende. Was das zunächst furiose und zwischendurch folkig angehauchte Highlight „Suffer Existence“ im Kurzformat durchlebt, gilt somit auch für die XXL-Kompositionen, die sich eben nicht nur selbstgefällig im Kreis drehen.

WORMWOOD beenden die Alben-Trilogie mit einem würdigen Finale
Vielmehr durchlebt das akustisch beginnende Finale „Ro“ in seinen zehn Minuten selbst verschiedene Phasen des Wachstums, bis das melodische Post-Black-Metal-Epos schließlich so leise und zurückgezogen verklingt, wie es begonnen hat. Das ist freilich nicht ganz so explosiv, wie wir uns das Ende allen Seins ausgemalt haben, transportiert dafür jedoch einen Hauch Gelassenheit. Lediglich ein kratzendes Rauschen durchschneidet die Stille, um uns schließlich mit der Frage zurückzulassen, ob denn nach dem Ende des Universums vielleicht doch noch irgendetwas bleibt.

Es hat fast den Anschein, als orientierten sich WORMWOOD auch hier an einem weiteren ungeschriebenen Gesetz: So wie sich mit jedem Sequel der Einsatz steigert, lässt man zum Schluss doch immer irgendwo eine kleine Hintertür offen, um im Zweifelsfall selbst eine eigentlich auserzählte Geschichte weiterspinnen zu können – gerade in diesem Fall nicht die schlechteste Idee, möchten wir meinen.

Nach ihrem Studioalbum “Eyes Of Oblivion” (2022) meldet sich die Rock’n’ Roll-Band THE HELLACOPTERS mit einer neuen Single zurück: “Stay With You” gibt es als Musikvideo bei YouTube. Zum Stück selbst äußert sich Gitarrist und Sänger Nicke Andersson:

“Wir sind mitten in den Aufnahmen unseres neuen Albums, das noch kein Veröffentlichungsdatum hat. In der Zwischenzeit sind wir sehr gespannt auf die Veröffentlichung unserer neuen Single ‘Stay With You’. Ursprünglich sollte sie auf dem kommenden Album erscheinen, aber wir haben beschlossen, es wie die Beatles zu machen und sie als eigenständigen Track mit einer B-Seite zu veröffentlichen. ‘Stay With You’ ist ein geradliniger Rocksong in Moll und wird von unserer Interpretation von ‘Fire In Cairo’ von The Cure begleitet. Wir hoffen, es gefällt euch.”

Neben der Digitalversion ist “Stay With You” auch als 7″-Single über Lightning Records erhältlich. Darauf befindet sich außerdem das THE CURE-Cover “Fire In Cairo”.

Dark Ambient und Drone von FLUISTERAARS? So wirklich überraschend kommt das nicht. Die niederländische Black Metal-Band zeigte sich in der Vergangenheit schon als Formation, die gerne und viel experimentiert und durch ihr Talent auch großartige Improvisationsfähigkeiten besitzt. Nach ihren beiden 2023 veröffentlichen EPs, die auch schrullige Dungeon Synth-Sounds beinhalteten, ist es vielleicht nur logisch, dass FLUISTERAARS mit ihrem fünften Album „Manifestaties Van De Ontworteling“ dem Black Metal vollständig entsagen und auf andere Art und Weise für akustisch begründete Rauschzustände sorgen.

Oder viel mehr: Sorgen wollen. FLUISTERAARS, bewaffnet mit einer absurden Menge an Synthesizern, Moogs, Percussioninstrumenten und so weiter, improvisierten das Album live im Studio ein. Spätestens jetzt sollte klar sein, dass „Manifestaties Van De Ortworteling“ keine schwelgerischen Momente versteckt hält wie „Bloem“ mit seinen melancholisch-impulsiven Songs „Nasleep“ oder „Vlek“ oder eine rohe Power wie „Gegrepen Door De Feest der Zielsontluiking“ hat. Viel mehr sind die sechs Kompositionen auf „Manifestaties Van De Ortworteling“ wie ein dunkler Tunnel, durch den man sich eine Stunde entlang arbeiten muss und aus dem sich langsam aber sicher, mit jedem Hören etwas mehr Formen und Schattierungen herausbilden.

FLUISTERAARS überraschen mit der stilistischen Ausrichtung aus „Manifestaties Van De Ontworteling“, ein logischer Schritt in ihrer Entwicklung ist das Album dennoch.
Statt auf das zu schielen, was andere Black Metal-Bands in ihren Ambient-Phasen veröffentlicht haben, orientieren sich FLUISTERAARS viel mehr an den Pionieren der elektronischen Musik wie TANGERINE DREAM, VANGELIS oder MANUEL GÖTTSCHING – natürlich auch, weil sie entsprechendes Vintage-Equipment verwenden. „Manifestaties Van De Ontworteling“ wirkt dabei wie eine Reise durch ein psychedelisches Labyrinth. „De Diamant Van De Tussenwereld“ kreist dabei um ein geheimnisvolles Thema und strahlt dabei eine große Ruhe aus. Ein wenig erinnert das an HORSEBACKs „Imaple Golden Horn“ und ist eines der schönsten Stücke des Albums. Daneben steht „Het Open Vuur Als Altaar“, das auf verspielten Akustikgitarren fußt und immer abstrakter, verzerrter und schließlich mit Hammondorgel unterlegt wird. Hier funktioniert das Album am besten.

Daneben stehen mit den auf wabernden Synthesizern basierenden „De Wieg Van Stormen“, „Spirituelle Verfremding“ und „Der Kunst“ auch Stücke, die doch recht random wirken und sich zu sehr ähneln. Eine Liebe zum Detail in der Soundtiefe und Struktur gibt es leider nicht zu hören, geschweige denn erleben. So pendeln FLUISTERAARS zwischen der Leichtigkeit schöner Stücke und einigen anstrengenden, zu langen Kompositionen. Nebenbei gehört, beim Sichten endloser Zahlenreihen beispielsweise, ist „Manifestaties Van De Ontworteling“ somit ebenso geeignet, beim Hören mit vermutlich bewusstseinserweiternden Rauschmitteln. (Zahlenreihen sichten kann übrigens auch bewusstseinserweiternd sein.) Unbestreitbar stark ist die Auswahl der Instrumente, derartige Synthesizer sind per 2024 nur selten zu hören.

Auf „Manifestaties Van De Ontworteling“ orientieren sich FLUISTERAARS eher an den Pionieren der elektronischen Musik statt an den Ambient-Abenteuern ihrer Black Metal-Kollegen.
Es gibt diese Bands, die Drone- und Ambient-Alben veröffentlichen und einfach damit versagen. „Celestite“ von WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM ist ein trauriges Beispiel dafür. Andere wiederum haben diese Genres einfach in ihrem Blut, in ihrer DNA und wissen exakt, was sie tun, siehe LOCRIAN. Und FLUISTERAARS mit „Manifestaties Van De Ontworteling“? Die liegen irgendwo dazwischen. Insgesamt ist es ein mutiges Album geworden, aber eben auch so frei von Strukturen, dass es schwerfällt, die knapp 70 Minuten durchzuhören. Zwar haben die überlangen Stücke eine Auswirkung auf die empfundene Zeit, „Manifestaties Van De Ontworteling“ ist dabei aber weder kurzweilig noch langatmig. Ob ich mir das Album nochmal anhören werde? Schwer zu sagen. Ob sich FLUISTERAARS damit einen Gefallen getan haben? Ebenso. Ob das Album in zehn Jahren späte Gerechtigkeit erfahren wird? Fraglich. Die Horde der Internet-Trolls hat ihr (vorschnelles?) Urteil bereits gefällt und unschöne Sachen in die Kommentarspalten der Welt geschissen. Aber hey, allein das ist schon ein Grund, „Manifestaties Van De Ontworteling“ eine Chance zu geben. Egal wie man dieses Album in letzter Konsequenz findet, es ist schön, dass das niederländische Duo auch weiterhin ausschließlich auf seine Intuition hört und dass es in dieser auf Konformität getrimmten Metalszene eine Band gibt, die es spannend hält.
