Die Power Metal-Band ORDEN OGAN hat einen Plattenvertrag mit Reigning Phoenix Music abgeschlossen. Den Deal kommentiert Sänger Sebastian “Seeb” Levermann wie folgt:

Gemeinsam wird man am 5. Juli 2024 das neue Album “The Order Of Fear” veröffentlichen. Die Wartezeit überbrückt in der Zwischenzeit das Musikvideo zum Song “Conquest” bei YouTube.

Ein Clip zur dritten Single “Moon Fire” gewährt einen weiteren Höreindruck. Darüber hinaus steht ein Musikvideo zum Titeltrack via YouTube auf Abruf bereit. Der erste Vorgeschmack aus “The Order Of Fear” ist die Single “My Worst Enemy”, zu der die Gruppe ebenfalls ein Musikvideo produziert hat. Den Hintergrund des Stück erklärt das Gespann wie folgt:

„Mit unserer neuen Single ‘My Worst Enemy’ kommt unsere verletzliche Seite zum Vorschein, wir präsentieren uns persönlich wie nie zuvor. Direkt von einer Hassliebe zu sprechen, wäre wohl übertrieben. Schließlich machen ALIENIST auf „Love / Hate“ rein gar nichts falsch. Im Gegenteil, eigentlich liefern die Australier 19 Minuten lang ziemlich soliden und durchaus kompetent konzipierten Metalcore der neuen Schule ab. Djenty Riffing, Synth-Untermalung und eine Menge Post-Produktion sind somit zu erwarten, während das Quartett zwischen drückender Aggression und sanften Tönen wechselt.

Leichtes Zähneknirschen wiederum verursacht jener Ansatz, da er ALIENIST mit ihrem generischen Modern Metalcore eben auch die eigene Note kostet. Groove und Melodie sind zweifellos vorhanden, doch die üblichen Referenzen sind so naheliegend wie mannigfaltig. Ob nun ERRA oder FIT FOR A KING durchschimmern, die Galligkeit MAKE THEM SUFFERs oder der Drive der Landsmänner POLARIS in „Distorted Reflections“: Eine dezidiert eigene Duftnote kommt der Band durch diesen Ansatz leider abhanden.

Höhere Weihen bleiben „Love / Hate“ dadurch zwar verwehrt, voller Potenzial steckt diese knackige EP dennoch. Gute Nachrichten also für Genrefans, die sich über ein durchaus spaßiges Techtelmechtel freuen dürfen, wenngleich die große Liebe daraus wohl nicht hervorgehen wird.

The Memory Of Snow, the brainchild of French musician Albin Wagener (Overcast), delivers powerful messages with a distinctive musical direction. This project artfully combines new wave, dream pop, blues enriched with soul, and post-punk into a fresh sound, resonating with the deep-rooted influences of Depeche Mode, Tears For Fears, Ultravox, and Slowdive.

Bodies delves into the singularity and diversity of human beings, exploring physical flaws, disabilities, and the inherent strength within our vulnerabilities. It poignantly reminds us of our resilience in the face of adversity. The lyrics capture the multifaceted nature of existence, contrasting fragility and resilience, beauty and ugliness, health and disability, and highlighting the complexity and contradictions of our experiences.

In the monochromatic, self-directed video, we witness a montage of individuals in various states of vulnerability and power. Each person stands unflinching, strong in their presence, embodying the raw and diverse essence of human experience. The visuals weave together a story of resilience, capturing the complex interplay of strength and fragility that defines us all.

The Bodies EP also features a second track, Drought Is The New Normal. This dark, heavy piece tackles the pressing issue of climate change and its far-reaching impacts. Crushing State – the electro/industrial supergroup founded by Chris Ruiz – has announced the release of a new single, titled “Welcome 2 Nothing.” Following up on the “Surveillance” debut earlier this year, the song was originally written in 2017 as a response to the widespread culture of misinformation, “alternative facts,” and mass manipulation that seemed to stem from the inauguration of the previous U.S. President; furthermore, “Welcome 2 Nothing” sees Crushing State collaborating with other musicians, as Jens Halbauer (Solar Fake, Fliehende Stürme) provided drum parts to the track, while the single also features a remix created by J.S. Clayden (Pitchshifter). Along with a lyric video directed by Ruiz, the “Welcome 2 Nothing” single was released on June 14 via most major digital outlets.
Best known as the co-founder of synthpop act And One before departing from that band in 2011, Chris Ruiz initially formed Crushing State as a solo endeavor; based in Berlin, the band currently features Mathias Thürk (Seadrake) on keyboards, guitarist André Feller (Solar Fake, Dreadful Shadows), and drummer Vincent Viebig.

Like a comet, often observed as a once-in-a-lifetime event, R.E.M. returned to the stage last night (June 13) at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City. Celebrating their induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Michael Stipe, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, and Bill Berry surprised attendees with an acoustic rendition of “Losing My Religion,” marking their first performance together in 15 years.

The reunion held profound significance, as R.E.M. officially disbanded in 2011 after a 31-year career that left an indelible mark on the music world. This was the first public performance of Stipe, Buck, and Mills since their dissolution and the first time all four original members shared a stage since their 2007 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. Berry, who left the band in 1997, has only intermittently performed with his former bandmates since then.

Earlier in the day, the band gave their first interview together with all four members on CBS This Morning. They humorously dismissed the idea of reuniting, with Mills quipping that it would take a “comet” to bring them back together and Buck expressing doubt that a reunion could ever live up to expectations.



Despite these playful denials, the band delighted fans by taking the stage that very evening. Stipe, speaking on behalf of the band during their induction, reflected on the enduring bond they share: “Writing songs and having a catalog of work that we’re all proud of and that is out there for the rest of the world for all time is hands-down the most important aspect of what we did. Second to that is that we managed to do so all those decades and remain not just friends, but dear friends.”

This surprise performance follows an unexpected reunion earlier this year. In February, R.E.M. came together during a tribute event celebrating their seminal debut album “Murmur” in their hometown of Athens, Georgia, although they did not perform at that time.

Fans have even more to anticipate, as Mills revealed last December that “plenty of vault songs” are yet to be released from R.E.M.’s extensive catalogue. However, the prospect of a full-scale reunion remains unclear. In 2022, Buck reiterated the permanence of their split, aligning with Stipe’s earlier assertion that a reunion would “never” happen. Yet, as last night demonstrated, anything is possible.

Today, there’s a relentless pressure to conform politically, religiously, and culturally, stifling individuality, creativity, and critical thought. Politically, we are urged to fit into predefined ideologies, but true wisdom lies in questioning and analyzing beyond surface rhetoric. Culturally, we are passive consumers of media, absorbing superficial values and norms. To truly live, we must break free from this passive consumption and actively engage with the world, questioning the status quo and societal norms.

Shallow Waves, a fuzz-laden post-punk noise group from Toronto, has embraced heavy psych influences in their music. Their most recent release marks a notable shift from their initial identity as an alternative 60s garage rock band to a fresh fusion of industrial post-punk and EDM. Drawing inspiration from contemporary bands like The Soft Moon, Gilla Band, Model/Actriz, as well as from iconic bands such as Killing Joke and Ministry, Shallow Waves has crafted a sound that is both daring and forward-looking.

Their blistering single No Devotion (out today via Green Witch Recordings) criticizes our world’s conformity, be it from a political, religious, or cultural perspective. The song challenges the listener to think for themselves, something we’re doing less and less from the content we constantly consume.

The message is clear: Don’t be content to echo the world’s noise. Listen to your inner voice, cultivate your unique perspective, and live authentically. The essence of being human is thinking independently, feeling deeply, and creating personal meaning. Let us break the chains of conformity and embrace the boundless possibilities of our individual and collective potential.

Die Metalcore-Band RISING INSANE hat einen Vertrag mit Long Branch Records abgeschlossen. Gemeinsam wird man am 23. August 2024 das neue Album “Wildfires” auf CD, Vinyl sowie digital veröffentlichen, das die Gruppe schon jetzt mit dem Musikvideo “Lighthouse” bei YouTube präsentiert.

Zuvor gab es außerdem einen Clip zu “Burn” sowie die Single “Malicious” bei YouTube. Zur Platte selbst hat Fronter Aaron Steineker Folgendes zu sagen:

“Ich hatte in den letzten 2 Jahren immer mehr das Gefühl, dass hinter jeder Ecke ein riesiger Streitherd lauert. Eigentlich müssen wir nur unser Handy in die Hand nehmen und werden sofort in ein hassgeladenes Meer an Konflikten geschmissen, überall ist so viel Hass. Mann bekommt immer mehr das Gefühl, dass die Welt um uns herum in Flammen steht, wenn man Krieg, Erderwärmung, Inflation und Depression, nach hinzunimmt. Dadurch hat dieses Album den Titel ‘Wildfires’ bekommen. Jeder Song auf dem Album handelt von einem ganz bestimmten Brandherd, Themen und Geschichten, die mich beim Schreiben belastet haben. Unser Ziel ist, durch unsere Musik ein Bewusststein dafür zu schaffen, wie sehr wir uns selbst und gegenseitig belasten, anstatt uns auf Dinge zu besinnen, die uns verbinden und Positivität schaffen.”

Auch die Single “Reign” gibt es vorab bei YouTube. Sänger Aaron Steineker kommentiert den Track:

“Wenn Menschen ihr wirkliches Ich verbergen, aus Angst vor Ablehnung und Hass, geraten sie in einen unlösbaren Konflikt mit sich selbst, schwer zu Lasten ihrer mentalen Gesundheit. Wir wollen die Menschen mit ‘Reign’ dazu ermutigen, für sich selbst einzustehen und sich von dem loszumachen, was einen runterzieht.”

Zur Feier des Tages erschien heute ein neues Musikvideo zum Song „Cleopatra’s Spawn“, über den uns Sänger Tim King verrät: „Dieser Song basiert auf der Theorie, dass die Pyramiden Ägyptens zum Teil mit Hilfe einer außerirdischen Kultur gebaut wurden. Der Text des Liedes geht noch weiter auf diese Theorie ein und besagt, dass Kleopatra selbst Alien-Babys zur Welt brachte, als sie sich mit den Aliens paarte, die Ägypten zu dieser Zeit besuchten. Musikalisch hat der Song eine sehr melodische und düstere Atmosphäre, die durch cleane Gitarren und zeitweise gesprochenen Gesang geprägt ist. Der Song enthält ein Solo des legendären Gitarristen James Murphy (ex-Death, ex-Obituary, ex-Testament).“

EMBRYONIC AUTOPSY’s neuer Longplayer wurde von Scott Roberts produziert und gemixt, und von Ulrich Wild in den Wilderness Studios gemastert. Auf Origins Of The Deformed geben sich hochkarätige Gäste wie James Murphy, Jack Owen (Six Feet Under, ex-Cannibal Corpse, ex-Deicide) und Terrance Hobbs von Suffocation die Ehre. Das Album Artwork stammt von Cutting Edge Metal Studios.

Living in Texas, Lauren and Charlie Eddy of Raudiver have confronted the harsh reality of how religion, once a beacon of hope and community, has been twisted into a tool for manipulation. They witness daily the cruelty and pettiness that can arise when faith is wielded as a weapon, rather than a source of compassion. Religion, in its truest form, should unite us, yet here it becomes a divisive force, turning neighbor against neighbor in the name of “righteousness.”

The news and politics in the Lone Star State are a masterclass in high drama, an art of misdirection. The populace is kept in a state of perpetual anxiety, hyper-focused on one fear after another. This constant barrage of fear-mongering serves a dual purpose: it distracts and divides. While the public’s attention is consumed by manufactured crises, those in power are quietly stuffing their pockets, profiting from the chaos they perpetuate.

“Those were some of our formative experiences growing up, Charlie Eddy admits. “When you’re raised to trust some specific people… or specific larger groups and then suddenly realize your trust was misplaced, it starts to unravel a bit, and you have to reassess what’s really going on. I think that’s been happening right now to a lot of people who are young.”

This mindset, this reality, is profoundly challenging to navigate. It requires a keen awareness to see through the veils of illusion, to recognize the games being played. The Eddys struggle with the overwhelming noise of media and political rhetoric, finding it difficult to maintain their own sense of truth and integrity amidst the cacophony. The challenge lies in resisting the easy path of conformity and fear. It demands a steadfast commitment to personal values, to kindness, and to seeing the humanity in others beyond the labels and fears imposed by external forces.

This drove the Eddys to write the stunning True Faith, a shoegaze/dream pop thriller written in a true miracle: a Victorian studio that weathered the disastrous 1900 storm on Galveston Island.  Named after ghostly voices, Raudiver traces a winding path through goth pop and darkwave, with ethereal vocals and hazy shoegaze textures anchored by hand-programmed beats.

True Faith explores themes of dreams, fear, and unity, emphasizing the longing for unwavering faith and the presence of a supportive father figure. They depict a contrast between abundance and scarcity, symbolized by sparrows feeding on seeds, and highlight the idea that true faith can bring stability and fulfillment amidst life’s challenges.

“This was the last song we wrote for the album, and Charlie brought the track in nearly complete and very late at night,” says Lauren Eddy of Raudiver’s new single, “True Faith.” “The only production I brought in was the samples of my breathing, and the backwards chime, because I loved his work and it didn’t call for much. The lyrics just tumbled out, which is something I wish happened to me all the time—but no, it was a freak thing. Words were falling out of my brain and I was observing like, “oh, am I a little bit angry right now?” So I just rode that out and allowed myself to get a little bit ugly and jarring with my voice for a change.”

“From the instrumentation standpoint, we’ve been writing lots of songs over the past few years, and I’ve just been getting into a place where I’m trying to simplify and use as few elements as possible while figuring out an arrangement,” adds Charlie Eddy. “Just hammer some ideas out back-to-back… and then eventually you’ll hear one and just feel the staying power.”

Die Deathwave / Gothic / Post-Punk-Band FOURTH DOMINION hat mit “Goetia” eine erste Single ihres kommenden Albums “Diana’s Day” veröffentlicht. Es ist nach “Wings of a Dying Crow” (2017) das zweite Album der US-Amerikaner aus Rochester.

Die Sängerin, Bassistin und geoutete Transfrau Meadow Wyand reflektiert in den Songs queere Traumata und Trotz, spricht aber auch über existenzielle Verzweiflung und spirituelle Weissagung. Weitere Band-Mitglieder sind Gitarrist Dave Milburn und Drummer Brady Mentz.

Sängerin CHARLOTTE WESSELS hat ihr neues Album “The Obsession” für 20. September 2024 angekündigt. Zum zweiten Preview-Song “Chasing Sunset” hat die Musikern einen Clip veröffentlicht.

Einen Höreindruck verschafft außerdem die Single “The Exorcism”, zu welcher Wessels auch ein Musikvideo produziert hat.

Für “The Obsession” arbeitete die Musikern mit einer kompletten Band zusammen: Gitarrist Timo Somers, Bassist Otto Schimmelpenninck van der Oije und Schlagzeuger Joey Marin de Boer teilten sich bereits mit CHARLOTTE WESSELS während ihrer Zeit in DELAIN die Bühne. Komplettiert wird das Line-up von Pianistin und Orgelspielerin Sophia Vernikov.

“The Obsession” erscheint via Napalm Records auf CD, Vinyl sowie digital und wurde von Guido Aalbers gemischt. Das Mastering hingegen übernahm Andy VanDette. Über die Platte hat CHARLOTTE WESSELS Folgendes zu sagen:

„Einerseits erzählt dieses Album eine sehr persönliche Geschichte – durch sein unbeabsichtigtes Thema der Angst, der zwanghaften Gedanken und der Flucht vor ihnen – und gleichzeitig repräsentiert es die Freude, mit allen, die an der Entstehung dieses Albums beteiligt waren, die wahren Formen der Songs zu finden. Deshalb habe ich The Obsession als Titel gewählt. Nicole Marxen, a singer-songwriter and visual artist from Dallas, TX, invites us into a world both perilous and poignant with her upcoming album, Thorns. This is music as an exploration of a landscape where danger lurks at every turn.

Reuniting with producer Alex Bhore (Halo Infinite Multiplayer, Meow Wolf Grapevine), Marxen dives into themes that span dreams and disorders, set against the backdrop of a disintegrating and grasping patriarchy. The collaboration promises a hauntingly intimate experience, as Marxen’s voice becomes a conduit for confessions that feel both personal and universal.

Thorns delves deep into Marxen’s personal battles with Body Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs), a little-known impulse disorder where individuals unconsciously harm their own bodies. These actions, often rooted in trauma, serve as a desperate attempt to self-regulate amidst chaos. Marxen sees these acts as a form of self-sabotage, a poignant reflection of the inner turmoil that many face but few discuss.

“It was important for me to show up to this material imperfectly,” Marxen says. “As a songwriter, I can put a lot of pressure on myself, often feeling like I have to say something profound or reach a kind of resolve. I didn’t want to pretend to have answers here, but rather notice what was coming up for me during each song’s moment in time.”

Through her music, Marxen shares her struggles and transforms them into a sonic landscape where every note and lyric is a step through a thorny path. The album is both a confession and a confrontation, a delicate dance between vulnerability and strength. Thorns‘ lyrics explore the pain of internal struggles, symbolized by thorns buried deep within. The repeated self-betrayal and dormant wounds evoke a relentless cycle of suffering. The lyrics convey the battle against compulsions, the fleeting nature of pleasure, and the ever-present, metallic numbness that underscores the anguish.

The video paints a surreal portrait of Marxen, dancing through liminal spaces—those in-between realms where reality blurs and the extraordinary peeks through. She moves with an eerie grace, her presence both haunting and ethereal. In the foreground, a dagger gleams, a stark reminder that our most formidable adversary often lies within. This blade, like the Ace of Swords card in tarot, is a symbol of the inner battles we all fight, the personal demons we must face to find our way back to the light with renewed spirit and clarity. Marxen’s dance becomes a ritual, a cathartic movement through the shadows.

In Marxen’s world, the dance with danger is not one to be feared but embraced, for it is through this dance that we learn to navigate our own paths with newfound understanding and grace. Thorns is an invitation to step into the unknown, to confront the darkness, and to find the light that lies beyond.

“Channeling themes of cycles and compulsion, ‘Thorns’ is a liminal, giallo-tinged portrait about the transformation that arises in reuniting with what we’ve pushed into the dark,” says director Judd Myers.

Die Blackened Progressive / Psychedelic Rock-Band HAIL SPIRIT NOIR hat mit dem Lyric-Video zu “Curse you, Entropia” eine zweite Single ihres kommenden Albums “Fossil Gardens” veröffentlicht. Es ist das sechste Album der Griechen und folgt auf das 2021er-Album “Mannequins” nach. Thematisch knüpft das Album allerdings dort an, wo “Eden in Reverse” (2020) aufgehört hat, und konzentriert sich auf den philosophischen und wissenschaftlichen Kampf, die Geheimnisse des Universums zu entschlüsseln und neue Bewusstseinszustände zu erreichen, die die Grenzen von Raum und Zeit sprengen.

“Fossil Gardens” wurde von Dimitris Douvras gemixt und Magnus Lindberg gemastert und wird am 28. Juni 2024 via Agonia Records erscheinen. Das Cover-Artwork stammt von George Baramatis. Vorab gibt es auch den Track “The Temple Of Curved Space” zu hören.

“Dieses Mal sind wir extremer als je zuvor, wir haben viele Blasts, Schreie und minimale Black-Metal-Texturen verwendet. Trotzdem glaube ich, dass dies ein positives Album ist, denn es dreht sich um den Charme unseres Kosmos und die Transzendenz von Raum und Zeit”, sagt Keyboarder Haris. “In diesem Sinne haben wir uns für eine solide und doch abstrakte Klangproduktion entschieden, d.h. wir wollten, dass der Hörer die Musik als Ganzes wahrnimmt und nicht als die Summe der einzelnen Teile und Instrumente. Manche mögen es anders finden als unser vorheriges Album, aber wenn man genau hinhört, wird man die extremen Ähnlichkeiten bemerken.”

“When did it all turn grey?”
Violence is a post-punk band hailing from Copenhagen, Denmark. With their roots firmly planted in the fertile soil of the European punk and hardcore scene, they’ve played over 100 shows in the underground circuit. The band decided it was time for a bit of a metamorphosis, swapping out their harsh punk sounds for a modern twist on the late ’80s post-punk vibe.

Their music, now steeped in melancholy and airy atmospheres, is a bit like if The Cure’s Disintegration took a holiday in contemporary times, picked up some synths, and decided to plant a few roots. Violence has managed to create a world that nods respectfully to the introspective charm of the past while adding their own fresh, moody spin; a bit like finding a vintage leather jacket that fits just right—nostalgic yet perfectly in tune with today.

Their new single Colour Decay, out today, weaves the brooding intensity of late ’80s post-punk with the pulsing undercurrents of ’90s European dance music, all set atop a foundation of UK garage drumbeats and trance synths. This unorthodox fusion results in a sound that’s both melancholic and unexpectedly enthralling. Joined by Saskia Karlholm of the Danish shoegaze band T A K E R, Colour Decay transitions from a stark post-punk tune into an experimental dance track that practically dares you to stand still.

Colour Decay is a lament for a world drained of its vibrancy, leaving behind the grey desolation of a life devoid of meaningful emotions and experiences. Think of it as the musical equivalent of discovering your favorite black-and-white film was actually shot in colour—there’s a certain charm to the gloom, but you can’t help but wonder what you’ve been missing.

In 2022, Violence’s debut album, Area Sub Rosa, earned its fair share of applause and perhaps a few puzzled head tilts. As they continue their musical evolution (or perhaps revolution), Violence is teasing us with promises of new music this year.

Würfel auf den Tisch, es schreit nach einer Fertigkeitsprobe! Wenn SALTATIO MORTIS wie aus dem Nichts einen Abstecher nach Aventurien wagen, muss man dieses Vorhaben geradezu auf Herz und Nieren prüfen. Denn das Universum des Pen&Paper-Rollenspiels „Das schwarze Auge“ bietet nicht nur massenweise Stoff für Fantasy-Erzählungen, sondern auch die eine oder andere heimtückische Herausforderung.

Solche souverän zu navigieren, gelang der Mittelalter-Rock-Band in den vergangenen Jahren nicht immer, als Deutschrock-Einflüsse und Party-Schlager die Wurzeln der Formation aus dem Rampenlicht drängten. Gut für die Medien-Präsenz und Social-Media-Reichweite, doch nicht immer befriedigend für langjährige Gefährten. Eben jene dürften sich über den Rückbezug auf Fantasy und Abenteuer besonders freuen, den „Finsterwacht“ mit einem durchaus breitgefächerten Song-Repertoire zelebriert.

SALTATIO MORTIS setzen gleich zu Beginn von “Finsterwacht” ein Ausrufezeichen
Dass das indiskutable Highlight mit dem neunminütigen Titeltrack direkt am Anfang der Platte steht, ist eine gewagte Entscheidung, die jedoch aufgeht. Überlegte Instrumentierung, teils bombastisch orchestriert, führt uns durch Höhen und Tiefen, welche Epik im Refrain genauso umfassen wie instrumentale Folk-Passagen. Zusammengehalten von einer charismatischen Erzählstimme und dem packenden Gastgesangs Hansi Kürschs (BLIND GUARDIAN) setzen SALTATIO MORTIS ein Ausrufezeichen, mit dem wir dieser Tage nicht mehr gerechnet haben. Sie können es nicht nur, sie wollen anscheinend auch wieder.

Zumindest, wenn wir die nachfolgende Schlaftablette „Schwarzer Strand“ ausblenden, die auch durch das FAUN-Feature mehr an deren jüngere Schlager-Eskapaden erinnert als an die Handschrift der sieben Musiker. Fernsehgarten-Charme versprüht auch das naive „Aurelia“, dessen Themenbezug mit dem Querverweis zur „Schönen der Nacht“ schon im Titel endet. Obgleich also das zugrundeliegende Konzept nicht immer als solches hervortritt – insbesondere die englischsprachigen Stücke fallen in atmosphärischer Hinsicht aus dem Rahmen -, agieren SALTATIO MORTIS im Gesamten deutlich schlüssiger als zuletzt.

SALTATIO MORTIS haben auf “Finsterwacht” wieder eine Vision
Trotz der musikalischen Vielfalt wirkt „Finsterwacht“ in seiner Gesamtheit authentisch und stellt somit sowohl den Vorgänger „Für Immer Frei“ (2020) als auch die jüngsten Standalone-Singles in den Schatten, wo die Band zum Teil krampfhaft zeitgenössischen Trends hinterherlief. Insofern ist das DSA-Konzept als Fundament ein cleverer Schachzug: Nicht für Social Media, sondern für einen übergreifenden Zweck wurden die elf Stücke inklusive Orchester-Interlude geschrieben. Deshalb darf zwischenzeitlich auch wieder der Folk ins Zentrum rücken, wenn uns „Der Himmel muss warten“ mit Akustik-Gitarre, Flöte und rhythmischem Klatschen in eine Taverne irgendwo im Herzen Aventuriens mitnimmt.

Mit schrillen Sackpfeifen, Percussion und Gauner-Chor verkörpert „Vogelfrei“ indes exakt das Leben außerhalb gängiger Gesetzesordnungen, wohingegen das energische „Genug getrunken“ nach dem gediegenen Schunkler „Feuer und Erz“ irgendwie doch ein bisschen Deutschrock-Flair in das Fantasy-Korsett zu verpacken vermag. Waren es hier noch KNASTERBART, sind es in „We Might Be Giants“ PEYTON PARRISH und Cristina Scabbia (LACUNA COIL), die dem treibenden Song Starpower verleihen sollen. Das gelingt dank catchy Refrain und kraftvoller Percussion-Untermalung tatsächlich besser als erwartet und festigt den Eindruck, den „Finsterwacht“ schon von der ersten Sekunde an hinterließ. Durchschreiten SALTATIO MORTIS auf ihrer Reise durch Aventurien so manches Tal, erklimmen sie dazwischen doch auch stolze Berge, deren Gipfel noch vor einigen Jahren unerreichbar schienen.

Es ist eine unerwartete Rückkehr zu alter Form, die sich vor einer läppischen Fertigkeitsprobe mitnichten zu fürchten braucht. Wenn der 20-Seiter am Ende auch nicht auf der Eins liegen bleibt, so meistern die Mannen um Sänger Alea die ihnen gestellte Prüfung doch mit Bravour.

Die Pagan / Groove Metal-Band WOLFHORDE hat mit “Bloodmoon Symphonies” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist nach “Towards the Gates of North” (2016) und “Hounds of Perdition” (2019) das dritte Album des finnischen Duos, welches aus Gitarrist Werihukka sowie Sänger und Drummer Hukkapätkä besteht.

“Bloodmoon Symphonies” wurde mit einem Cover-Artwork von Juha-Matti Koppelomäki ausgestattet und wird am 30. August 2024 via Inverse Records erscheinen. Vorab gibt es zu “Tormented (Beyond Apprehension)” einen Video-Clip.

“”Tormented” ist ein Song über den Verlust des Fokus und das Sehen der Dunkelheit im Licht des Tages. Es geht um die Erkenntnis, dass man den Punkt ohne Wiederkehr überschritten hat und außer Kontrolle gerät”, erklärt die Band.

Das RAGNARÖK FESTIVAL geht auch 2025 wieder in eine neue Runde: Stattfinden wird das Event vom 24. bis 26. April 2025 in der Stadthalle in Lichtenfels. Tickets gibt es derzeit zum Frühbucherpreis von 129,-€ über die offizielle Festivalhomepage.

Smoke from burning incense rises and dances, the sprawling and sensual byproduct of a thing turning to ash. The trees we amputated from ourselves threaten to grow back, the land we tried to escape from beckons us to return. We find out how to come home by running away from it. As we navigate our personal field of burdens, we imagine becoming weightless. How much space is there between a dream and a trial? In Alora Crucible there is none at all.

Biographies are apocryphal time traps. Here there is only fission and the thankfully forgotten coward's dream of photographing statues...

After we disappear, we hope to re-appear. We reach for ways to reinstate the ground beneath us – to reverse the vanishing. Old religions sought the safe passage of the life contained in the body to the nonmaterial spirit realm. That place, it was usually imagined, would be an improvement. It was, at the very least, a somewhere.

Who could foresee the future, when the abstraction of nearly everything into an intangible nowhere would drag us with it whether we wanted to go or not? We drift in liminal nowhere space, unsure which direction we prefer: final oblivion on one side, or a return to Earth on another.

At the very least, a world of things abstracted into nowhere lets us think in terms of the collapse of things into other things. This leaves the mind ripened for imagining the instrument collapsing into the musician collapsing into the idea – then all of it collapses into the landscape, and the landscape spits it back out. This process happens a billion times over every millisecond, and collapse starts to stabilize into a recognizable shape: the artist, becoming not because they are the beginning of something but because they are enmeshed in a procession.

Hands into fingers, fingers into strings, strings into vibrations collapsing into the air, and regenerated as chemical compounds, each one never having been and never to be again. There are pathways under our feet with which plants speak, just like those amongst our above-shoulder nerves. Someone must eventually find out what sound this makes. They must take it upon themselves to sacrifice themselves to it, in the hope that there will be a thereafter more worthy of pursuit than the nowhere of numbers and the empty promises of dead tyrants.

It would be wrong to say that descriptions are graveyards, though they are. The truth is they now reside in graveyards, they populate the soil as a legion of rightfully dead. Only the heft and lift of the poet deserve respiration, but the poets have been driven into a different labyrinth even further underground than the graves, breathing by halves in the darkness of catacombs waiting to finally expire. Unless some brash attempt to commune with them s쳮ds.

True divination must destroy linearity. That is its only choice. The choice which cannot help but be made forms the pathway of the humiliated and reverent saint.

Längst vergriffen, in bestimmten Formaten oder in überarbeiteter Neuauflage nie erhältlich und mit jeder Menge spannendem Extra-Material angereichert, kommen diese definitiven Re-Issues von Swanö höchstpersönlich remastered daher und erstrahlen teilweise sogar durch zusätzliche Remixe als Bonus in neuem Licht.

Ambivalenzalarm! Ein neues ULCERATE-Album ist ein Garant für große Freude, aber der Verfasser möchte ehrlich sein. Vor dem ersten Hören ist da aber immer ein gewisser Respekt. Es steht fraglos eine anstrengende Stunde bevor, da muss sich mental erstmal bereit machen. Easy Listening gab es von dem neuseeländischen Trio noch nie zu hören und „Cutting The Throat Of God“ ist wie selbstverständlich ein intensives, anstrengendes Album, das jede Sekunde wert ist, gehört zu werden. Also ja, nachdem es den Bruchteil einer Sekunde Überwindung kostete zum Erstkontakt überzugehen, waren 58 Minuten später zwei Dinge klar: Erstens, es wird in Arbeit ausarten, sich in das siebte Album von ULCERATE hineinzufuchsen. Zweitens, der Weg des langsamen Kennenlernens und Entdeckens von „Cutting The Throat Of God“ wird mehr als lohnenswert sein.

ULCERATE selbst beschreiten weiter den Weg, den sie seit ihrem Opus Magnus „Stare Into Death And Be Still“ eingeschlagen haben. Das Trio bietet mehr als atmosphärisch-dissonanten Tech-Death für Introvertierte, sie haben sich freigespielt, lassen Einflüsse aus Black Metal und Post Metal ebenso zu, wie Emotionen – allein Letzteres lässt sie zu einer Ausnahmeerscheinung im Death Metal werden. Dass sie technisch auf dem höchsten Niveau spielen, kommt on top: Gerade Drummer Jamie Saint Merat liefert eine atemberaubende, detailverliebte Performance und holt das Maximum aus seinem Drumkit heraus. Trotz Triggersound erzielt er eine Dynamik, die in diesem Genre viel zu selten ist.

Mehr als atmosphärisch-dissonanter Tech-Death für Introvertierte: ULCERATE lassen auf „Cutting The Throat Of God“ Emotionen zu.
Sein Songwriting-Sparringspartner Michael Hoggard schafft derweil das Kunststück, eine Vielzahl an Gitarrenspuren übereinander zu schichten, ohne das große Ganze aus den Augen zu verlieren. Die sieben Stücke sind auch ihren Längen zwischen sieben und zehn Minuten überbordend, enthalten aber gerade so viel Komplexität, wie sich noch verdauen lässt. ULCERATE sind also nicht nur als individuelle Instrumentalisten gereift, sondern auch als Komponisten. Das wird gleich beim Opener „To Flow Through Ashen Hearts“ deutlich, der sich Zeit nimmt, sich erst sammelt, bevor er in einem komplexen Sturm aus Riffs, Leads, Grooves, pumpenden Bässen und den brutalen, überraschend vielseitigen Vocals von Paul Kelland mündet.

Das dissonante Riffing, die verschachtelten Arrangements, in denen die dunkle Atmosphäre durch klug eingesetzte Dynamik greifbar wird, erzeugen nach und nach Momente, die überraschend prägnant sind. Das Finale von „To Flow Through Ashen Hearts“ und das Mainriff von „Further Opening The Wounds“ sind auf bizarre Art und Weise melodiös und dadurch auch emotional fordernd. Diese Verletzlichkeit gelingt auch, weil ULCERATE nicht der Versuchung erliegen, ein poliertes Soundbild zu erzeugen. Trotz des technischen Ansatzes atmet die Musik und reißt im Spannungsfeld zwischen laut und leise stets aufs Neue mit. Großen Anteil daran hat auch das Mastering von Magnus Lindberg. So spielen ULCERATE so wirkmächtig mit Gegensätzen, wie es einer Death Metal-Band nur möglich ist.

ULCERATE agieren als Einheit, „Cutting The Throat Of God“ lebt aber auch von den Talenten der Musiker.
All das aufs erste Hören zu begreifen, ist schlicht unmöglich. „Cutting The Throat Of God“ spornt die Rezipienten nicht nur an, die Musik mit Kopf und Herz zu verstehen, es strahlt generell eine Sogwirkung aus. ULCERATE zeigen, was in diesem Genre machbar ist, wenn über den Tellerrand geblickt wird. Klar ist aber auch, „Cutting The Throat Of God“ ist abermals kein Album, das zum stumpfen Abreagieren geeignet ist. „Transfiguration In And Out Of Worlds“, das sich Zeit nimmt und langsam steigert, ist hierfür das beste Beispiel. Und doch haben ULCERATE in den meisten Songs packende, treibende Elemente stehen. „To See Death Just Once“schichtet dennoch ein mitreißendes Riff auf das nächste und stiftet zur Bewegung an. Auch „Undying As An Apparition“ entwickelt am Ende ein mitreißendes, fast schon eingängiges Riff, das ausgiebig variiert und die Intensität nach und nach in absurde Höhen schraubt, bevor der Titelsong am Ende das Album mit einem ausgiebigen Grande Finale würdig abschließt – so passend, dass im Anschluss auch mal ein paar Minuten Stille gut tun, um die vergangene Stunde zu verdauen.

Vier Jahre nach dem epochalen „Stare Into Death And Be Still“ zeigen sich ULCERATE weiterhin als gefestigt auf allen Ebenen und trotzen dem Druck, der auf ihnen lastete. Das spielerische Niveau ist haushoch, vor allem glänzt wieder einmal das Drumming von Jamie Saint Merat, der auch maßgeblich am überraschend organischen Sounddesign beteiligt ist. Das Songwriting ist ein wenig herausfordernder als zuletzt, aber schlagkräftig – auch weil sich ULCERATE seit so vielen Jahren in derselben Besetzung entwickeln konnten. Die Songs sind komplex arrangiert und geschrieben, durch die dichte Atmosphäre hinterlassen die Stücke aber einen nachhaltigen Eindruck und bleiben auch nach dem Hören noch präsent. Auch optisch und konzeptionell ist „Cutting The Throat Of God“ trotz scheinbar plakativen Titels ein vielschichtiges, tiefschürfendes Album über den unwiederbringlichen Verlust der Moral. Es bleibt nur ein Fazit: Dem gewaltigen Vorgänger sind diese sieben musikalisch wie intellektuell messerscharfen Stücke mindestens ebenbürtig – „Cutting The Throat Of God“ ist das nächste Meisterwerk in der Karriere dieser Band.

In 2022, San Francisco saw the intriguing rise of Octavian Winters, a post-punk ensemble with a flair for the theatrically gloomy. This band, featuring guitarist Stephan Salit (Thrill of The Pull), drummer Randy Gzebb (Thrill of The Pull, Love Club), bassist Jay Denton, and Ria (Amenti) Aursjoen on vocals and keyboards, offers a sound that’s less about sunny Californian vibes and more about conjuring dark enchantments in moonlit forests.

Now, Octavian Winters has joined forces with Mark Pistel (Consolidated, Meat Beat Manifesto) on their new two-track single. Out now via Stratis Capta Records, the A-side, Nebula, muses on the inevitable impermanence of all things—whether seen, unseen, known, or unknown. Complementing this is Pistel’s irresistibly pulsating remix of Velveteen, which promises to get even the most reluctant specters tapping their ghostly feet.

Their music beautifully marries the somber and the sublime, creating a landscape where edgy riffs dance with ethereal synth waves, and vocals that sound like they were borrowed from an ancient, mystical chorus. Picture, if you will, the spectral elegance of Cocteau Twins, the haunting beats of Clan of Xymox, the enchanting allure of Faith and the Muse, and the mystical depths of Dead Can Dance, all weaving together in a misty Frisco twilight.

Nebula reflects upon the passage of time and the transient nature of dreams and existence; describing an aeon spinning years, leading to a world on the brink of an end, with a new sun descending. Stars rise like a crown for the deceased, emphasizing the inevitability of everything fading into nothingness.

“Nebula began as an experiment, says Ria Aursjoen. “I was trying to pin down the concept of the song in my head lyrically for a while and just knew it felt very “big”, even apocalyptic in a way. I kept envisioning a sort of “last day at the end of the world” — what would the sky look like? Would we know and understand what was happening? There is this broadly Gnostic idea of the universe as unfolding and unfolding through what are called Aeons, essentially levels of manifestation, until we get this world we live in here….I imagined this world reaching the fullness of its life, that whole cycle ending — and then everything reversing, refolding back to the start to make way for the next universe. There is a lot of esoteric symbology referenced in this song for those out there who like that sort of thing. The incredible thing about symbolic language is that it can have so many levels of meaning depending on the viewer/listener. I am sure I will understand my own words to this in new ways, in the future.”

“We were discussing what song idea we should work on next during the writing process and Ria brought in the demo of Nebula, says Randy Gzebb. “We listened once and started playing it at rehearsal and after a couple of takes, everyone had their parts locked down. I started to play with the tom groove and tried to make it powerful, but still leave some space for the track to breathe. The rhythm and tempo set the overall tone and emotional mood of the song, with guitar and pulsating bass creating a haunting atmosphere with powerful vocal lines”.
Nebula comes with a gorgeous cosmic music video pondering the mysteries of the universe, directed by collaborator David Kruschke.

Best known as a founding member of Consolidated and a key player in Meat Beat Manifesto since 1997, he’s also lent his talents to The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, Grace Jones, Therapy?, MC 900 Foot Jesus, Machines of Loving Grace, Hector Zazou, Mark Stewart, Lee Scratch Perry, Cabaret Voltaire’s Stephen Mallinder, and Fishbone’s Angelo Moore. His resume reads like a who’s who of eclectic and innovative music, proving that Mark Pistel is the musical equivalent of a Swiss Army knife—versatile, reliable, and always handy to have around.

“Randy Gzebb called me about remixing one of the tracks off The Line or the Curve,” recalls Mark Pistel. “I was excited to do so, as we’d recorded some of these vocals at my Room 5 Studio in San Francisco. I chose to do Velveteen as I already loved the track with its fantastic vocal melody and Stephan’s unstoppable guitar hook! I  took on the track with pulsing analogue synths and a slamming dance floor beat for the clubs.”

Recorded in San Francisco, The Line or Curve EP was brought to life by Mark Pistel at OW Studio and Room 5 Recording. The band enlisted William Faith (The Bellwether Syndicate, Faith and the Muse, Christian Death, The March Violets) to produce, mix, and master the EP at 13 Studio in Chicago.

Throughout their musical escapades, members of Octavian Winters have graced stages alongside a parade of iconic acts, including Nine Inch Nails, Killing Joke, Lords of the New Church, Savage Republic, Christian Death, The Frozen Autumn, Everything Goes Cold, and Black Tape for a Blue Girl.

The ‘Nebula / Velveteen (Mark Pistel Remix)‘ single is out now, available digitally from fine music platforms, including via Apple Music, Spotify and Bandcamp.

All I ask is the stars! 
It’s been quite the year for Leeds legends, The March Violets. They’ve recently signed with Metropolis Records and have a shiny new album, Crocodile Promises, set to release on July 19th. To celebrate, they’ll be gracing the stage at The Garage in London on the 20th and the Rebellion Festival in Blackpool on August 2nd, with other dates sprinkled in for good measure. Before all that, fans can sink their teeth into the new single and video for Hammer The Last Nail, which drops on June 14th.

Now a lean, mean three-piece machine, The March Violets boast original members Tom Ashton (guitars) and Rosie Garland (vocals), with the addition of new bassist Mat Thorpe. Hammer The Last Nail comes with a smashing video and offers the first tantalizing taste of what Crocodile Promises has in store. The lineup shift brings a new energy to the band, and Garland’s voice in Hammer The Last Nail is full of wisdom, strength and power. (We don’t need the moon – all we ask is the stars, and perhaps Paul Henreid to light us two cigarettes!)

Tom Ashton directed a fun, spooky, and wonderfully psychedelic video of the band haunting the grounds of a mysterious Georgian mansion floating somewhere in the cosmos. Rosie Garland, ever the theatrical sprite, chews the scenery with delightful aplomb, giving ghosts everywhere a run for their ectoplasm.

Once upon a time in Leeds, 1981, The March Violets struck their first chord and scribbled their first set list on a napkin in some dimly lit pub. From the bustling post-punk scene, they charmed audiences with a delightful blend of male and female vocals, wrapped in brooding, atmospheric tunes that seemed to echo from the deepest corners of their souls—or at least from the back of the rehearsal room.

The band quickly gained notoriety, not just for their music but for their uncanny ability to make gloominess seem oddly entertaining. They caught the attention of John Peel, who featured them in his famed BBC sessions, and their indie chart success skyrocketed. Songs like Crow Baby, Snake Dance, and Walk Into The Sun became anthems for the disenchanted youth of the mid-’80s, making it clear that The March Violets were more than just a flash in the gothic pan.

Their journey wasn’t without its twists and turns. In 1987, they had a brush with Hollywood when Turn to the Sky was featured in the John Hughes movie Some Kind of Wonderful. But as is often the case in fairy tales, the band’s story took a pause, and they split up later that same year.

Fast forward to 2010, and like all good stories, there was a reunion. Founder members Rosie Garland (vocals) and Tom Ashton (guitar) rekindled the flame. They released new albums in 2013 and 2015, proving that time only added depth to their sound. Even in the sombre world of goth rock, there’s always room for a happily ever after.

Crocodile Promises will be released on July 19th by Metropolis Records on CD, vinyl and through all streaming and digital platforms.
