Kraftwerk’s Telephone Call (Der Telefon-Anruf) emerged as a single in 1987, encapsulating the band’s enduring intrigue with the intersection of humanity and machinery. Unlike most Kraftwerk tracks, where Ralf Hütter or Florian Schneider took center stage, this song featured Karl Bartos on lead vocals. His gentle, suave voice, paired with the band’s trademark vocoder effects and the nostalgic beeps of 1980s telecommunication, imparts a unique charm. It shifts away from the cold, robotic sound often associated with Kraftwerk, instead offering something more melodic and tender.

In 2024, REWORK—comprising Michael Kuebler, Daniel Varga, and a few guest vocalists—released their own take on this classic, under their label, exlove records. Their version honors the spirit of the original while infusing it with expansive synth pads that replace the familiar beep-boops. The result is a minimalist beat and pulsing synth undercurrent, enriched by a sultry, resonant female vocal reminiscent of the late Françoise Hardy and Jane Birkin, as well as the cover stylings of Nouvelle Vague. This rendition stands as both a homage and a reimagining, breathing new life into the timeless dialogue between human emotion and technological sound.

In 2024, REWORK dropped their new EP Lipstick and quickly followed it up with the album Never Again, featuring Telephone Call. Both releases came out on their self-founded label, exlove records. The album is drenched in dark, brooding vibes, with spacious, minimalist compositions that signal a definitive evolution in their sound.

Recorded and mixed at their own Technique Studios, the tracks were given new life by remix legends like Trentemøller, Magda, Roman Flügel, Alter Ego, Losoul, Fur Coat, Paranoid London, and the lateAndrew Weatherall. REWORK’s tunes have also landed on various compilations, including Richie Hawtin’s Closer To The Edit, the Famous When Dead series, and Magda’s Balance 27 Mix.

Die Stoner Rock-Band ELEPHANT TREE hat mit “Handful of Ten” eine neue Compilation angekündigt. Auf der Scheibe sind neue Tracks, B-Sides und Demos zu finden. Release-Termin ist der 6. September 2024 via Magnetic Eye Records. Vorab gibt es mit “Try” einen Video-Clip.

“Dies war wirklich eine kathartische Übung, etwas etwas anderes zu spielen, geschrieben mit einer anfänglichen Wegwerf-Attitüde nach ein paar Pints an einem schwülen Sommertag”, sagt Gitarrist und Sänger Jack Townley. “Wir spielen nicht oft schnellere Songs, geschweige denn, dass wir Platz haben, sie auf eine Platte zu bringen. Das Thema handelt von jemandem, der sich anpasst und versucht, ein Musterbürger zu sein, der nicht aus der Reihe tanzen will, weil er die Konsequenzen fürchtet. Er versucht sein Bestes, seine abweichenden Ansichten nicht zu äußern, während andere um ihn herum sich anpassen, und am Ende kocht alles über und er fühlt sich ‘für immer verloren’.”

Mit “Psycles” wird am 26. Juli 2024 via Horror Pain Gore Death Productions die neue EP der Sludge / Grindcore-Band CULLED erscheinen. Es ist nach “Thin the Herd, Fail to Learn” (2018) die zweite EP der Kanadier aus Edmonton

“Psycles” wurde von Jesse Gander gemixt und von Brad Boatright gemastert. Vorab gibt es mit “Halo of Flies” einen Video-Clip.

“Wir sprechen im Song die Schäden und Traumata an, die durch das Patriarchat und unsere kollektive Rolle darin verursacht werden”, sagt die Band. “Es geht nicht nur um die Geschichte des Schadens und der Unterdrückung von 50% unserer Gesellschaft, sondern auch um die Manipulation, um den Mythos zu verbreiten, dass ein Großteil unserer Gesellschaft unseren Herren untertan sein muss, denen das Privileg zuteil wurde, einfach nur in der richtigen Farbe, Form und gerechten Gegend der Welt geboren zu sein.”

Um die österreichische Death Folk Metal-Institution CADAVEROUS CONDITION war es in den letzten Jahre recht still geworden und die Kollaboration mit HERRN LOUNGE CORPS bzw. das Album „The Breath Of A Bird“ im deutlich reduzierten Bandgefüge legte 2018 ein Ende der Formation nahe. Die Ruhe wurde nur durch die beiden nachträglichen Vinyl-Veröffentlichung der gerade genannten Zusammenarbeit, wie auch der erweiterte Deluxe-Edition des letzten regulären Werks „Burn Brightly Alone“ unterbrochen. Doch da war ja noch etwas und zwar wurde 2022 via Seven Metal Inches Records unter dem Titel „What The Moon Brings“ ein eigentlich 1991 eingespieltes, aber nie veröffentlichtes Mini-Album der Band in limitierter Form auf Platte gepresst. Die darauf enthaltenen 11 Songs waren noch reinster Death Metal der alten Schule und frei von den späteren Experimenten, Fremd-Einflüssen und überraschende Cover-Versionen, für die CADAVEROUS CONDITION eigentlich bekannt sind. Eventuell angespornt durch den Erfolg dieser Archiv-Veröffentlichung fand sich die Band um Frontmann Wolfgang Weiss mit Rene Kramer und den Gebrüder Droneberger in klassischer Vierer-Besetzung wieder zusammen und geht jetzt mit dem brandneuen Album unter dem programmatischen Titel „Never Arrive, Never Return“ knallhart Back To The Roots! Das bedeutet im Klartext keine Experimente und Cover-Version, sondern eben einfach nur „prollig“ donnernd-tosender Death Metal mit röhrenden Brüll-Gesang in Reinform. Bis auf ein paar Sprachsamples und dem abschließenden Doom-Monster „To Be“ machen die restlichen 10 Songs hier absolut keine Gefangenen. Obwohl ich weiß Gott (oder Teufel) kein Fachmann für das Metal-Genre bin, würde ich „Never Arrive, Never Return“ eine amtlich fette Produktion und den Songs bei aller gegebenen Brutalität auch eine gewisse melodiöse Eingängigkeit attestieren! Mag sein, dass ich im Falle von CADAVEROUS CONDITION befangen bin, aber ich finde, das „Never Arrive, Never Return“ aus der Masse des aktuellen Angebots in diesem Gerne heraus sticht bzw. ganz weit vorne mit dabei ist!
PS: Erstmals in der Diskografie von CADAVEROUS CONDITION erscheint das Album übrigens gleichzeitig parallel im CD- und Vinyl-Format, wobei die Pressung bei The Circle Music im blauen Vinyl daher kommt und eine limitierte Sonderauflage von 100 Exemplaren im grünen Splatter-Material über Seven Metal Inches Records verlegt wird. In 2007, Cold Cave emerged from the depths of the Los Angeles underground music scene, delivering a smoldering synth-driven darkwave sound that evokes the melancholy of a rainy day. Wesley Eisold, a seasoned figure in the hardcore band scene, transitioned skillfully into electronic music, melding post-punk, industrial, and synth-pop elements. Their captivating blend of brooding lyrics and atmospheric vibes quickly garnered a dedicated following. While the lineup has evolved, Eisold remains at the helm, now accompanied by Amy Lee. Cold Cave’s compositions often delve into themes of love, loss, and existential contemplation.

After a whirlwind year of supporting Depeche Mode, The Cult, and headlining events like Tomorrow’s Ghost Festival in the UK, Wave Gotik in Germany, Grauzone in the Netherlands, W Fest in Belgium, Adverso Fest in Mexico, Cold Waves, Levitation, and Darker Waves in the US, Cold Cave felt an undeniable urge to express themselves.

Cold Cave’s latest release, Hourglass, is like stepping into a nostalgic, endless summer crafted by the black-clad Los Angeles group, a veritable love letter to an era when music felt like an emotional time capsule. This shimmering anthem features Wesley Eisold and Amy Lee harmonizing their love story against a backdrop reminiscent of late ’80s and early ’90s tunes. Think of the heartfelt vibes of The Lightning Seeds, Republic-era New Order, and The Head On The Door-era of The Cure.

 “Now felt like the right time to release what we create as we create it,” says the band. “Sometimes touring takes center stage and we miss the thrill of creativity.”

Die Metalcore-Band OUR HOLLOW, OUR HOME hat einen neuen Song veröffentlicht: Den Clip “Funeral Verse” gibt’s bei YouTube im Stream.

Zudem kann man sich “Veil Walker” als Musikvideo bei YouTube ansehen. In dem Song verarbeitet Sänger Gaz einen persönlichen Trauerfall, wie er erläutert:

“Textlich ist ‚Veil Walker‘ eine Gelegenheit, sich von meiner Schwester Yasmin zu verabschieden, die 2020 an Krebs starb. Das war nur wenige Tage bevor die Pandemie begann und das absolut Undenkbare geschah. Die landesweit vorgeschriebene Isolierung bedeutete, dass nur die engsten Angehörigen an den Beerdigungen teilnehmen konnten, und als weitere Ungerechtigkeit konnten sich die Angehörigen nicht gegenseitig trösten, wie es in solch emotionalen Zeiten eigentlich vorgesehen ist. Ich lebte damals in Glasgow, was bedeutete, dass ich nicht an der Beerdigung teilnehmen konnte; ich konnte ihren Sarg nicht zusammen mit meiner Familie tragen. Ich hatte keine Gelegenheit, mich wirklich zu verabschieden. Es ist jedoch ein großer Trost für mich zu wissen, dass ich in ihren letzten Momenten bei ihr sein konnte.”

TORGEIR WALDEMAR hat mit “Merci” ein neues Album angekündigt. Das Blues / Folk Album folgt auf das 2020er-Album “Love” und wird am 6. September 2024 via Jansen Records erscheinen.

“Barmherzigkeit ist der Begleiter der Liebe. Die beiden gehören zusammen wie Yin und Yang in einer untrennbaren Verwandtschaft. Wie das Alte und das Neue Testament. Wie Hass und Liebe. Wie Tag und Nacht, Sonne und Mond. Und nicht zuletzt als Gut und Böse. Es geht um das, womit wir als Menschen kämpfen. „Der Song setzt die EMBRYONIC AUTOPSY-Tradition der Alien/Mensch-Hybrid-Theorie durch die Kombination von Alien-DNA mit menschlicher DNA fort, um ein ‘Superwesen’ zu schaffen. ‘Orgies Of The Inseminated’ nimmt den Hörer mit auf eine Reise der Mischwesen, die sich in einer fast genetisch spezifischen Züchtung vermischen und verschiedene Eigenschaften und Merkmale hervorbringen. Der Song wartet mit einem langen und äußerst heftigen Solo des legendären Gitarristen James Murphy (ex-Death, ex-Obituary, ex-Testament) auf.“

Neben James Murphy enthält das Zweitwerk auch Gastauftritte von Jack Owen (SIX FEET UNDER) sowie Terrance Hobbs (SUFFOCATION).

‚Drowned Maid‘ ist ein klassischer Crossover-AMORPHIS-Song aus den 90ern. Wenn man heute auf ihn zurückblickt, beinhaltet er eigentlich recht simple Keyboardklänge und Soundeffekte. Der Mix aus doomigem Death-Metal und folkigem Prog ist uns einfach wunderbar gelungen“, erinnert sich Bassist Olli-Pekka „Oppu“ Laine. „Schon damals war der Track ein Liveliebling und auch heute ist es nach wie vor eine wahre Freude, ihn auf die Bühne zu bringen!“

2020 wollten AMORPHIS eigentlich ihr 30-jähriges Jubiläum mit drei speziellen Konzerten feiern, geplant war je ein Konzert mit Songs aus den einzelnen Dekaden in Club Tavastia in Helsinki, Finnland. Dann kam die Covid-19-Pandemie, die Konzerte wurden im Juni 2020 als Livestreams übertragen. Mit dem Live-Album “Queen Of Time (Live At Tavastia 2021)” hat RPM, das Label von AMORPHIS, bereits 2023 einen Mitschnitt der Konzerte veröffentlicht.

Die Heavy / Stoner Rock-Band HIPPIE DEATH CULT hat mit “Aneurysm” eine Cover-Version von NIRVANA mitsamt Video-Clip veröffentlicht. Der Song folgt auf das 2023er-Album “Helichrysum”.

“Laura (Gesang, Bass) und ich sind in den 90er Jahren mit Nirvana aufgewachsen und haben uns vor kurzem wieder mit ihrem Katalog beschäftigt, was unsere Wertschätzung für sie und ihre Ethik als Band neu entfacht hat. Als wir letztes Jahr mit Coversong-Ideen für unser Live-Set herumspielten, kam uns die Idee, “Aneurysm” zu spielen. Es machte Spaß, es zu spielen, also haben wir nicht lange überlegt und es im Laufe des letzten Jahres in unser Live-Set aufgenommen. Als wir Anfang 2024 von der Tournee nach Hause kamen, gingen wir direkt ins Studio, um eine Version davon aufzunehmen, nur so zum Spaß, solange es noch irgendwie frisch in unseren Köpfen war”, sagt Gitarrist Eddie Brnabic.

Die Progressive Metalcore-Band ALLT präsentiert ihre neue Single “Remnant” mit einem Musikvideo bei YouTube. Das Stück kommentiert das Quintett wie folgt:

“‘Remnant’ ist ein sehr persönlicher und thematischer Track, selbst für unsere Verhältnisse. Er markiert den Beginn einer neuen Geschichte, die wir gerne enthüllen möchten. Als wir diesen Song schrieben, wollten wir die Essenz von Radioaktivität und außerweltlichen Kräften einfangen. Der Track ist zutiefst menschlich und hat doch eine unverkennbar fremdartige Qualität. Er ist ebenso melancholisch wie schwer – eine Geschichte über menschliche Schwäche und Überleben.”

Auch die vorherige Single “The Orphan Breed” gibt es in Bild und Ton bei YouTube. Das Stück folgt auf den Track “Emanate”, den die Formation Anfang 2023 mit einem Video vorstellte. Es handelte sich dabei zugleich um den ersten Track unter dem neuen Label Century Media – erst Ende 2022 hatte man einen Vertrag beim Label unterzeichnet.

Härter als der Vorgänger “Artifacts” (2019) soll es sein, das neue Album aus dem Hause MOTHER OF MILLIONS. Die Progressive Metal-Band hat “Magna Mater” für 4. Oktober 2024 angekündigt, die erste Single “Inside” kommt schon am 12. Juli 2024. Zur Platte äußert sich die Gruppe wie folgt:

“‘Magna Mater’ ist ohne Zweifel unser bisher härtestes und intensivstes Album, sowohl konzeptionell als auch musikalisch. Es ist ein Album, in dem alle Emotionen zu unerforschten Gebieten werden, zu Ritualen, bevor wir sie als unsere eigenen akzeptieren. ‘Magna Mater’ ist ein Album über Verlust, aber letztlich geht es um das Leben. Es ist ein großer Teil dessen, was wir sind, und wir hoffen, dass ihr die Fahrt genießen werdet.”

Produziert wurde “Magna Mater” von hector.d, das Artwork gestaltete NAPAN Studio. Erscheinen wird die Platte über das Label ViciSolum Productions. Nach dem Release will die Formation zudem auf Tour gehen – Details stehen noch aus.

Nachdem der Folk-Anteil bei den letzten Alben ja deutlich reduziert war, wenden sich THANATEROS mit „Tranceforming“ wieder verstärkt traditionellen Weisen und folkigen Klängen zu, ohne dabei an Kraft und Härte zu verlieren.
Inhaltlich kehrt die Band einmal mehr zu magisch-spirituellen, pagan-archaischen Themen zurück: Trancereisen, alte Götter, schamanische Riten und die Verehrung der Natur – all dies bildet das Substrat für Bens vielschichtige Texte.
Und so ist die erste Single „I Am All“ eine Ode an unsere Erde, die Muttergöttin, die Schöpferkraft und ein Aufruf uns bewusst zu werden, dass wir alle ein Teil von ihr sind – „We are all brothers and sisters…“.

Rio de Janeiro’s Oruã has firmly planted themselves in the Brazilian lo-fi music scene. Led by the talented guitarist and producer Lê Almeida, the band features former Built to Spill members and long-time collaborators João Casaes (synths), Bigu Medine (bass), and Phill Fernandes (drums). Their sound is a quirky mix of lo-fi indie rock, krautrock, noise, afrobeat, and Brazilian influences, from Luiz Gonzaga’s earthy Pernambuco vibes to classic Brazilian psych rock.

After rocking out with Built to Spill on tours across the US and Europe, Oruã is back with a fresh single, Miragem. This second offering from their upcoming album PASSE, which drops on July 19th, promises more of their signature genre-blending fun.

“Miragem was born near the sea, while three-quarters of the band lived together for some time,” says the band. “The lyrics combined feelings of relief and pain because we lived in paradise while we were also dealing with difficult events in our lives. It became a song about people who are down and how they can still help others who are also down.”

This single perfectly embodies the noisy, lo-fi experimental vibes that Oruã has been dishing out in the Brazilian underground scene for years.  ‘Miragem,’ for those who don’t dabble in Portuguese, means “mirage.” Think of it as chasing an oasis in the desert, only to find out it’s all a cosmic joke.

The lyrics depict a state of emotional turmoil and uncertainty. Picture a mirage popping up, casting shadows and nudging you into some serious soul-searching. Even when faced with a path of indecision, there’s a relentless push to keep moving forward, pain and all. The refrain, “That’s where it hurt the most,” hammers home just how deep that struggle cuts.

In 2019 Oruã’s sound was discovered by indie rock legend Doug Martsch of Built to Spill, which led to him inviting Lê and João to become temporary members of the 90’s indie rock band. Later, they recorded, co-produced, and co-mixed Built to Spill’s most recent album, When the Wind Forgets Your Name, released in 2022 on Sub Pop Records. Miragem was recorded in Cabo Frio with the support of André Medeiros, who worked as a sound engineer and mixer.

After touring extensively with Built to Spill and showcasing their high-energy shows in the US and Europe throughout the years, Oruã will return to the US in 2024 in support of PASSE, which comes out on Transfusão Noise Records. Their sound continues to mix the electric pulses of deconstructed guitars over a mesmerizing groove, taking both the audience and the band into a collective trance.

Oruã spoke with Post-Punk.com about the inspiration behind “Miragem,” as well as their upcoming tour with Dad Bod:

Where did the inspiration for “Miragem” come from?

Basically, the track is about insistence even in pain. It has Brazilian elements in the way it is sung and was composed near the sea.

“Who have been your musical inspirations?”

Lots of different things. We were brought up listening to 90s indie rock – Pavement, Guided by Voices, but we got deep into Fela Kuti and Afrobeat and Can and Krautrock. Since the beginning of the band we’ve managed to keep some elements of improvisation as part of the sound.

What part of your upcoming tour with Dad Bod are you most looking forward to?

In particular, we’re very excited about the start of the tour. It starts in Boise, a city where we have formed strong artistic bonds and friendships. There are many cities where we’ve played in the past and had great nights. Seattle, Chicago, Denver and New York are some of them. §

Oruã will be taking the noise on the road this summer, sharing dates across the US with Dad Bod. The tour kicks off in Boise, Idaho, just in time for their LP release, and hits major cities across North America.

Die Thrash Metal-Band ANVIL hat eine neue Single geteilt: “World Of Fools” kannman sich über alle geläufigen Streaming-Plattformen anhören.

Auch die Nummer “Truth Is Dying” gibt es auf allen gängigen Plattformen im Stream. Entnommen ist das Stück dem 20. Album “One And Only”, das laut Frontmann Lips Kudlow auf bewährte Qualitäten setzen soll:

„Wir sind unserem alten Stil so ähnlich wie seit Jahren nicht mehr. Wir haben alle unsere moderneren Aspekte fallengelassen, insbesondere die 90er-Jahre-Version von Anvil. Es gibt keine sexuellen Themen und keine Thrash-Speed-Songs wie auf früheren Alben.”

JESUS PIECE veröffentlichten am 14. April 2023 das Album “…So Unknown”, die Platte ist das Labeldebüt der Metalcore-Band bei Century Media Records. Nun teilte das Gespann mit “FTBS” ein neues Musikvideo zur Platte.

Weitere Hörproben sind “Silver Lining” bei YouTube, die Single “Tunnel Vision” als Audiostream sowie in “Gates of Horn”, zu dem es auch ein Video bei YouTube gibt. Bereits vor Album-Release teilten JESUS PIECE  den Track An Offering To The Night.

JESUS PIECE-Drummer Luis Aponte beschreibt “… So Unknown” so:

“Dieses Albums hat uns alles abverlangt. Es war ein intensiver und herausfordernder Prozess, sie spiegelt eine Menge Verwirrung, aber auch eine Entwicklung wider. Während der Pandemie gab es eine Menge Unsicherheit und Emotionen – wir haben uns alle sehr verändert und sind gewachsen. Wenn es also einen einzigen Gedanken oder ein Konzept für die Platte gibt, dann ist es die ständige Metamorphose. So haben wir auch als Band agiert – wir haben viel Zeit mit dem Songwriting verbracht und die Dinge als Einheit ausgearbeitet, um uns dann zu steigern. Es spiegelt definitiv wider, dass wir reifer geworden sind und dass wir uns zum ersten Mal wie eine richtige Band fühlen.”

Die Alternative / Noise Rock-Band DEATH BY GONG hat mit “Heavy Air” einen Video-Clip ihres kommenden Albums “Descalator” veröffentlicht. Es ist der erste Release des deutschen Trios, welches aus Bassist Chris Breuer (HEADS., ZAHN), Sänger und Gitarrist Jobst M. Feit (RADARE) sowie Drummer Peter Voigtmann (SHRVL, HEADS., THE OCEAN) besteht. Gemixt und gemastert wurden das Album von Joe Joaquin bei Custom Mojo MK III in Ulm. Release-Termin ist der 20. September 2024.

Vorab gab es schon die beiden Tracks “Distant” und “In Despair” zu hören, welche nicht Teil des Albums sind, aber als Bonus 7″ zum Vinyl-Bundle gehören.

VOODOO KISS veröffentlichen ihr zweites Studioalbum: “Feel The Curse” erscheint am 16. August 2024 via Reaper Entertainment. Aufgenommen wurden die acht neuen Stücke im jaM’in Studio in Schwäbisch Gmünd, das Artwork stammt von Sebastian Jerke.

Produziert wurde “Feel The Curse” von der Band selbst. Wie sich das Resultat anhört, verraten VOODOO KISS am 21. Juni 2024: An diesem Tag erscheint die erste Single “Angel Demon”.
