Das Psychedelic / Ambient-Projekt HARVESTMAN von STEVE VON TILL hat mit “Triptych: Part Two” den zweiten Teil einer Album-Trilogie angekündigt. Der Drei-Album-Zyklus wird regelmäßig zu drei Vollmonden des Jahres 2024 – dem Pink Moon am 23. April, dem Buck Moon am 21. Juli (via Neurot Recordings) und dem Hunter Moon am 17. Oktober – veröffentlicht. Vorab gibt es den Song “Damascus” zu hören.

“Der Track entstand bei meinen ersten Experimenten mit Software, die auf Loops basierende Komposition verwendet. Nachdem ich jahrelang den gleichen linearen Prozess wie bei der analogen Aufnahme verwendet hatte, wollte ich nun die Möglichkeit haben, Rhythmen, analoge Phrasen, Delay- und Modulationseffekte in einem bestimmten Tempo zu manipulieren. Ich lud meinen Freund Sanford Parker ein, mich bei meinem Einstieg in diese Welt zu begleiten. Was als Tutorial für das Sampling, Schneiden und Synchronisieren von Percussion-Loops begann, führte schnell dazu, dass er mir zeigte, wie ich meine Fuzzed-Out-Gitarrenimprovisationen mit dem Programm loopen konnte. Wir haben weitergemacht und sind davon weggegangen. Vielleicht wäre es ein Wegwerfstück geworden, wenn nicht etwas in diesen Beats und Fuzz-Gitarren meine Fantasie angeregt hätte. Nach einigen Monaten öffnete ich aus Neugierde die Session und sah mir das Stück erneut an. Der Vibe zog mich sofort in seinen Bann, ich setzte einen soliden Bass-Groove und Synthesizer ein und fand eine organische Abfolge der Loops, die dem Stück Leben und Fluss verlieh, ohne den Loop-Charakter der grundlegenden Tracks zu verlieren.”

Der jahrelange Zorn fordert irgendwann seinen Tribut: ANGELUS APATRIDA begegnen uns zwar auch auf ihrem achten Studioalbum noch fernab jeglicher Resignation, der Furor des selbstbetitelten Vorgängers (2021) ist hingegen nur noch in Auszügen zu spüren. Dabei ist es durchaus natürlich, irgendwann auch mildere Töne anzuschlagen, um nicht vorzeitig auszubrennen. Das unermüdliche Gegengewicht aller Missstände dieser Welt zu sein, ist ein energieraubendes Unterfangen, dem sich auch die Spanier irgendwann fügen müssen.

Zu unserem Leidwesen, möchten wir allen Verständnisses zum Trotz hinzufügen. Denn den Biss des Openers „Scavenger“, wo ANGELUS APATRIDA mit Gift und Galle das Tempo hochdrehen, tauscht die Band alsbald gegen softere Töne ein. Dass an anderer Stelle Bands wie TESTAMENT und die Bay Area im Allgemeinen für „Aftermath“ vermehrt als Referenz herhalten müssen, liegt auch an den stiltypischen Gesangslinien, die Frontmann Guillermo Izquierdo immerhin sicher zu intonieren weiß. Nur reißt uns der cleane Refrain von „Cold“ nicht annähernd so mit, wie es die teils PANTERA-mäßigen Attacken auf „Angelus Apatrida“ so verlässlich geschafft haben.

Für ihre Verhältnisse gehen ANGELUS APATRIDA teils fast schon handzahm zu Werke
Wobei der gemäßigtere Ansatz, der natürlich als Thrash-Platte immer noch fernab jeglicher Kuschelromantik liegt, durchaus seine eigenen Höhepunkte hervorkehrt: Über rund achteinhalb Minuten bahnt sich „To Whom It May Concern“ einen recht spannenden Weg zwischen Härte und Eingängigkeit, indem gerade die Singstimme Izquierdos das Stück durch seine größten Momente führt. Die Regel ist das auf „Aftermath“ leider nicht, denn obgleich das Niveau im Mindesten stets ordentlich bleibt, lassen Tracks à la „Fire Eyes“ die ehemals so dominante Kante vermissen.

Die rohe Zielstrebigkeit von einst blitzt natürlich immer wieder durch, wird schlussendlich jedoch zu oft wieder in geregelte Bahnen gelenkt, um nachhaltig im Gedächtnis zu bleiben. Aggressiv, aber doch irgendwie handzahm präsentieren sich ANGELUS APATRIDA in der Folge, was uns allein deshalb so ernüchtert zurücklässt, weil uns die Band eben zwei Jahre zuvor noch mit beispiellosem Fokus den Kopf geraderückte. Somit treffen vielversprechende Ideen wie der spanische Sprechgesang in „What Kills Us All“ auf zu oft verschenktes Potenzial – eigentlich ja ordentlich, aber gerade deshalb auch zum Haare raufen.

Die Black Metal-Band LIMINAL SHROUD hat nach “Nucleonic Blight” mit “Malaspina” einen zweiten Track ihres kommenden Albums “Visions of Collapse” veröffentlicht. Es ist nach “Through the False Narrows” (2020) und “All Virtues Ablaze” (2022) das dritte Album der Kanadier.

“Visions of Collapse” wurde gemeinsam mit Matt Roach (u.a. für ATRÆ BILIS tätig) bei Rain City Recorders in Vancouver aufgenommen und gemixt und von Greg Chandler (ESOTERIC) gemastert. Das Cover-Artwork stammt aus der Feder von Chris “Misanthropic Art” Kiesling. Release-Termin ist der 5. Juli 2024 via Willowtip Records.

CEMETERY SKYLINE stellen sich mit einem weiteren Song vor und haben nun auch ein Visualizer-Video zu “The Coldest Heart” veröffentlicht.

Das Stück folgt auf den Clip zu “In Darkness”. Für Keyboarder Santeri Kallio ist der Song eine Zeitreise:

“Ich mag den Gedanken, dass die Leute die Melodie und den Vibe mit diesem Song fühlen. Es bringt mich zurück in eine Gothic-Disco in Düsseldorf im Jahr ’96. Es gibt viel Rauch, viele Lichter, gute Melodien, einen schönen und stetigen Beat.”

Als erstes Lebenszeichen teilten die All-Star-Band ein Video zu “Violent Storm“. Zum Line-up der Gothic Metal-Band gehören:

Die Indie / Post-Hardcore-Band THE ANTIKAROSHI hat mit “Gravity” den Opener ihres neuen Albums “L’inertie Polaire” als Video-Clip veröffentlicht.

“Der Text handelt von der Tatsache, dass die Menschen immer noch fundamentale, bewährte Grundlagen für die weitere Existenz des Menschen auf diesem Planeten ignorieren”, erklärt Sänger und Gitarrist Christoph Hennig. “Im doppelten Sinne kann “Gravity” auch metaphorisch gesehen werden, da einige Machthaber versuchen, diese physikalischen Gesetze zu überwinden und bereits “heroische” Expeditionen zu unbekannten Orten starten. Vielleicht ist es aber auch nur ein armseliger Versuch der “Auserwählten”, durch die Hintertür zu verschwinden, nachdem sie ihr Geld damit verdient haben, die oben genannten Prinzipien mit Füßen zu treten. Leider ist es nicht die Schwerkraft, die sie aufhalten wird…”

“L’inertie Polaire” ist das sechste Album des deutschen Trios aus Potsdam. Der Titel des Albums, “L’inertie Polaire”, ist inspiriert durch das gleichnamige Buch von Paul Virilio und beschreibt den unbequemen Zustand der postmodernen Gesellschaft, die vor der zunehmenden Beschleunigung des technischen Fortschritts kapituliert.

Das Album, welches am 31. Mai 2024 via Exile On Mainstream erschienen ist, wurde gemeinsam mit Nikolaus Schwab bei Chaosaudio Potsdam aufgenommen und gemixt und von Stefan Betke gemastert. Das Cover-Artwork stammt von Matt Irwin.

Within the swirling creative hub of the Los Angeles music scene emerges plaster 0f paris, the solo avatar of musician Tony Bevilacqua. Known for his punk lineage with The Distillers, Tony’s musical journey has seen him collaborate with the likes of Cold Showers, KÁRYYN, and Ross Farrar or Ceremony. plaster 0f Paris began as a minimalist experiment but has since evolved, crystallizing with their latest EP, less today.

The project finds its form under Chris King’s meticulous production and features the ethereal vocals of Chelsey Boy on the track “Nurse.” The EP’s sound is a love letter to the washed-out vocals and layered guitars of the ’90s, echoing the reverberations of Pixies, The Dandy Warhols, and Slowdive.

The journey begins with the title track, a psychedelic shoegaze number that layers lush instrumentation with a laid-back vibe, leaving you in a twilight state of unease. This surreal opening is the gateway to deeper, darker territories. “Slit/Scan” continues the descent with moody, cinematic instrumentals where whispers thread through a fog of static, like spirits speaking from beyond.

“Nurse” pulls us back to reality, anchored by raw guitar riffs and the haunting vocals of Chelsey Boy. Her voice, woven with gritty instrumentals, paints landscapes reminiscent of Dirty Beaches and Angelo Badalamenti’s dreamlike scores. Each track on the EP offers its own twist, creating a diverse yet cohesive sonic tapestry that keeps listeners on their toes.

In the beginning, love is a radiant current; a shared journey of discovery. Over time, when communication falters, misunderstandings arise, and the waters become muddied, that initial energy dissipates – and if one is not careful, can be replaced by inertia and detachment. This process, a natural progression like changing seasons, teaches us about our vulnerabilities and true selves. In this phase, we’re invited to let go of the past and embrace the present with compassion. This release is not defeat but a recognition of impermanence, allowing space for new growth, connections, and understandings to emerge. But sometimes, we need to wallow in despair and indulge our grief with familiar comforts.

The initial heartbreak and the catalyst for grief in a decaying relationship is captured in the debut single Love Me by London outfit Death Drive, featuring Carine Fierobe and Danny Sanchez. Love Me showcases Carine’s voice, a blend of anger and soul with a hint of malevolence, while Danny’s pulsating basslines and pummeling drums push the intensity to new heights. This raw and powerful expression of emotion offers a poignant reflection on the turbulence of love and loss.

Die Heavy / Power Metal-Band NORTHTALE liegt vorerst auf Eis. Das gab Mastermind und Gitarrist Bill Hudson in einem Statement auf Social Media bekannt. Zuvor sagte die Formation geplante Festivalauftritte ab.

Den Schritt begründete Hudson mit Schwierigkeiten innerhalb der Band – nach der diesjährigen Europatour, trennten sich NORTHTALE von Sänger Guilherme Hirose –  sowie den Erfahrungen mit der Musikindustrie im Allgemeinen. Die Zusammenarbeit mit vielen unseriösen Personen innerhalb des Sektors sei sehr stressig und schwierig, was sich auf auf Hudsons Motivation ausgewirkt hat. Als Tourgitarrist für DORO und I AM MORBID bliebe ihm diese Seite des Geschäfts erspart, weshalb er sich in naher Zukunft auf diese Rolle konzentrieren möchte.

Ob NORTHTALE zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt zurückkehren könnten, ließt der Bandkopf offen.

Das WACKEN OPEN AIR vom 31. Juli bis 3. August 2024 ist ausverkauft – nach Angaben der Veranstalter sind 85.000 Tickets verkauft worden.

Dassjetzt alle 85.000 Tickets weg sind, ist schlicht der Hammer. Wir haben die besten Fans der Welt!“

Die 33. Ausgabe des Open Airs in Norddeutschland steht unter dem Motto „Witches & Warlocks“  – das Thema soll 2024 im Erscheinungsbild, künstlerischen Darbietungen und Programminhalten aufgegriffen werden.

Anlässlich des 20-jährigen Jubiläums des WACKEN METAL BATTLEs kehren 2024 insgesamt neun ehemalige Teilnehmer auf das Festival zurück: BLIND CHANNEL, CRISIX, DRONE, JET JAGUAR, PHANTOM EXCALIVER, SOURCE OF RAGE, VARANG NORD sowie WALKWAYS kehren auf den “Holy Ground” zurück.

Auch das Programm des “Wasted Wednesday” auf der Wasteland-Stage steht mittlerweile: Auftreten werden dort EVILE, HELLRIPPER, HITTEN, INFECTED UNION, DEIMOS DAWN, S.D.I. sowie PORTRAIT. Einen weiteren Headliner haben die Veranstalter am 24. Dezember enthüllt: KORN spielen 2024 auf dem Festival. Bestätigt hat man außerdem ARCHITECTS, BEHEMOTH, KK’S PRIEST, MISTER MISERY, PRIMAL FEAR, RAVEN, THE 69 EYES, THE BABOON SHOW sowie THE DARKNESS.

Mit der Bandwelle zum dritten Advent enthüllen die Organisatoren jetzt weitere zehn Acts für das Open Air: AXEL RUDI PELL, BLACKBRIAR, EMBRYONIC AUTOPSY, FEUERSCHWANZ, HALF ME, JESUS PIECE, LIV KRISTINE, MR. BIG, TEXTURES und THE AMITY AFFLICTION sind ebenfalls mit dabei.

Bei OPETH dürfen auf dem WACKEN OPEN AIR 2024 die Fans über die Setlist abstimmen
Zum zweiten Advent folgte eine weitere Ladung Bands: OPETH spielen 2024 eine exklusive “by Request”-Show, bei welcher die Fans über die Setlist abstimmen dürfen. Mit dabei sind darüber hinaus AS EVERYTHING UNFOLDS, ASENBLUT, BEASTO BLANCO, BETONTOD, BUTCHER BABIES, FIDDLER’S GREEN, NACHTBLUT, SKYLINE sowie VAN CANTO. Davor kündigte das WACKEN OPEN AIR zum ersten Advent einen Schwung neuer Bands an. So spielen 2024 auch TESTAMENT, ARMORED SAINT, DRAGONFORCE, INSOMNIUM, FLOGGING MOLLY, SPIRITBOX, ZEBRAHEAD, APRIL ART, OOMPH! sowie RAGE auf dem Festival. Letztere haben dabei eine besondere Jubiläumsshow zum 40-Jährigen angedacht.

Den Black Friday haben die Organisatoren für eine Reihe neuer Ankündigungen: Neben CRADLE OF FILTH sind 2024 auch NECROTTED, TANKARD, PADDY & THE RATS sowie SUZI QUATRO mit dabei.

SCORPIONS, KORN und AMON AMARTH sind Headliner
Zum Valentinstag lassen die Organisatoren acht weitere Acts aus dem Sack: GENE SIMMONS kommt mit seinem Soloprogramm nach Wacken, außerdem treten BARONESS, MASSIVE WAGONS, ROBSE, WHITECHAPEL, PERSEFONE, PLANET OF ZEUS und BÜLENT CEYLAN auf.

Pünktlich zu Halloween bestätigten die Veranstalter am 31. Oktober 2023 sieben weitere Bands für das Festival: TRELLDOM, JUNGLE ROT, INCANTATION, MESSIAH, ENDSTILLE, UADA und SKELETAL REMAINS bilden dabei das Line-up der traditionellen “Night of Dismemberment”.

Die ersten Acts gab es bereits im August: Als Headliner führen SCORPIONS und AMON AMARTH das Billing an. Außerdem wurden IN EXTREMO, BLIND GUARDIAN, BEAST IN BLACK, BLUES PILLS, PRIMORDIAL, WOLF, THE WARNING, RED FANG, SOIL, XANDRIA, VREID (30 Years of Sognametal / exclusive Show for W:O:A), WATAIN; VIO-LENCE (2024 Germany exclusive festival appearance), FLOTSAM AND JETSAM (Special Oldschool Set), EXHUMER, PAIN, EMIL BULLS, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, SICK OF IT ALL (Exclusive 30th anniversary of “Scratch The Surface” show), MAYHEM (Exclusive 40th Anniversary German Festival Show), MOTIONLESS IN WHITE, SONATA ARCTICA, UNLEASH THE ARCHERS, BURY TOMORROW, FUTURE PALACE, ANKOR, JOHN COFFEY, KNORKATOR, BRUTUS, IGNEA sowie ASAGRAUM bestätigt.

Kartenvorverkauf WACKEN 2024 – das Festival ist bereits ausverkauft
Beim Thema Tickets musste man schnell sein: War bereits das WACKEN 2023 innerhalb von fünf Stunden ausverkauft, erschöpfte sich das Kontingent für die 2024er Auflage nach nur vier Stunden. Der Kartenvorverkauf für das W:O:A 2024 bagann am Sonntag, 6. August 2024 um 20 Uhr auf metaltix.com. Um 0.30 Uhr waren alle 85.000 Tickets bereits verkauft.

Die Kategorien im Überblick:
Die auf 10.000 Stück limitieren Faster-Tickets gingen zuerst in den Verkauf. Sie kosteten 333€  inkl. Gebühren, dazu gibt es ein T-Shirt.
Danach startete der Verkauf der Hard-Tickets. Sie kosteten ebenfalls 333€ inkl. Gebühren.

Faster-Ticket und Hard Ticket gelten für das  Festivals an allen 4 Tagen und bieten Zugang zu allen Bühnen. Das Hauptprogramm findet von 31. Juli 2024 bis  3. August 2024 statt. Camping ist im Ticketpreis enthalten, campen darf man ab 29. Juli, bis 4. August am Mittag müssen die Campgrounds verlassen werden.

WACKEN TICKET REFUND 2023
Für alle, die es 2023 nicht auf das Festivalgelände geschafft haben, weil sie den Anreisestopp berücksichtigt haben, wird es eine Erstattung geben. Details sind noch nicht klar, am 6. August schreiben die Veranstaler in einer Pressemitteilung:

„Es schmerzt uns sehr, dass ein Teil unserer Metal-Familie nicht mitfeiern konnte“, erklärt Holger Hübner. „Doch leider war dieser Schritt unvermeidbar, damit das Festival überhaupt stattfinden konnte. Die wahren Helden und Heldinnen des W:O:A sind deshalb die, die zu Hause blieben oder umkehren mussten.“

Thomas Jensen ergänzt: „Umso mehr freuen wir uns, dass das diesjährige Wacken Open Air zu einem bemerkenswerten Erlebnis mit unzähligen Gänsehautmomenten, grandiosen Konzerten und einem wahnsinnigen Gemeinschaftsgefühl wurde. Die große Solidarität in unserer Community und weit darüber hinaus erfüllt uns mit Dankbarkeit.“ Metalheads, die nicht am W:O:A 2023 teilnehmen konnten, wird der Preis ihres Tickets erstattet. Außerdem bekommen sie ein Vorkaufsrecht auf die Tickets für das Wacken Open Air 2024.

Am 2. August 2023 wurde auf der Homepage des WACKEN OPEN AIR diese Statement zur Erstattung veröffentlicht:

Liebe Ticketinhaber*innen,

trotz aller Bemühungen mussten wir heute früh morgens den endgültigen Einlass-Stopp für das Wacken Open Air 2023 auf Grund der aktuellen Wettersituation und den Auswirkungen auf das Festivalgelände bekannt geben. Alle Ticketinhaber*innen, die das Festival aufgrund dessen nicht besuchen können, werden den Ticketpreis rückerstattet bekommen (einschließlich WOA 2023, Bauer Uwes Garten 2023, Residenz Evil 2023, Wheels of Steel 2023, Wacken United 2023, Wacken United Catering 2023).  Mit Informationen zu allen weiteren buchbaren Produkten versorgen wir euch, sobald diese uns zur Verfügung stehen. Ausführliche Informationen über den Rückerstattungsprozess – und auch darüber, wann ihr Fans mit der Erstattung rechnen könnt – werden in Kürze bekannt gegeben. Wir wissen, dass viele von euch große Anstrengungen unternommen haben und eine lange Reise hatten, um das Wacken 2023 zu besuchen. Wir wollten nichts mehr, als mit 85.000 Metalheads auf unserem holy ground zu feiern. Aber bei den anhaltend schwierigen Bedingungen haben wir die maximale Besucherzahl erreicht, die wir in diesem Jahr unterbringen können. Wir hoffen von Herzen, dass wir euch im nächsten Jahr in Wacken begrüßen können.

Rosa Feodora, an up-and-coming German artist based in Dublin, has unleashed a brooding blend of goth and alternative rock with her new song, Walking Home Alone. From Osnabrück to Hamburg to Dublin, Walking Home Alone accompanied Rosa Feodora throughout her most defining and significant years of personal transformation. Feodora wrote the song in 2021, shot the music video in 2022, and recorded it in 2024. Such a prolonged process of developing the song witnessed her evolution as an artist.

In a world where solitude offers both solace and unease, Walking Home Alone delves into the profound loneliness of the night. Unacknowledged faces drift past, propelling one towards fleeting comforts. Yet within this isolation, a new presence emerges, offering a sense of belonging and transforming the experience into a newfound sense of home.

Rosa Feodora’s music resonates deeply in troubled, vulnerable moments. Determined to inspire self-awareness, Feodora bravely invites us to confront our fears and give voice to them, so we may all hear and understand our own struggles. Walking Home Alone reveals the universal experience of loneliness, frustration, and sadness. It reminds us that by finding strength and light within ourselves, we can support each other through the darkness, fostering connection and understanding. Feodora’s intense, resonant contralto, reminiscent of the power in Florence and the Machine, conveys the deep sorrow and angst of abandonment. The chorus, however, offers optimism; a light at the end of the tunnel.

“We’re all just walking each other home,” Feodora concludes.

In early 2024 at California’s Villa Aurora, once the home of German-Jewish author, poet, and political activist Lion Feuchtwanger, Swedish artist Molly Nilsson recorded Excalibur, the new single from her forthcoming new album un-american activities.

Nilsson’s recent artist residency through the Villa Aurora program facilitated the creation of this album from scratch. The fresh environment provided the freedom, space, and time to challenge her art and push her music into uncharted territory. This residency provided the perfect backdrop for Nilsson to explore new dimensions, allowing her to evolve and experiment in ways previously unimagined. It is a masterpiece.

Excalibur stands as a heartfelt tribute to an artist who was one of the first to be declared an “enemy of the state” by the Nazi regime, recognizing his struggle. Simultaneously, it serves as Nilsson’s sharp critique of the modern oppressions she has observed happening in the United States, acknowledging the nation’s perpetual promise that remains unfulfilled. This duality speaks to the eternal dance between hope and reality, between ideals and the imperfections of our world.

To fully grasp the album’s context, it’s essential to understand the history behind its title. The House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) was a pivotal force in mid-20th century America, established to investigate alleged disloyalty and subversive activities among private citizens, public employees, and organizations suspected of having Communist ties. Its aggressive tactics, notably the blacklisting of artists, writers, and entertainers, created an atmosphere of fear and censorship, stifling artistic and political expression. The impact of HUAC’s activities reverberated through the cultural landscape, leading to a chilling effect on freedom of expression and prompting a wave of self-censorship that echoes into today’s societal and political climates.

Despite the heavy context behind the song and the forthcoming new album, Excalibur embodies the grand, soaring, anthemic choruses that Molly effortlessly brings to life. The video, co-directed by Nilsson and Txema Novello, beautifully encapsulates the song’s essence as we follow Molly, wild at heart, as she embarks on a road trip across the United States.

Die Sludge / Doom Metal-Band EARTH SHIP hat mit “Soar” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist das sechste Album der aus Berlin stammenden Band, deren Grundgerüst das Ehepaar Jan und Sabine Oberg (jeweils GRIN, SLOWSHINE) bildet. Als Drummer stand diesmal André Klein (SLOWSHINE) zur Verfügung.

“Soar” wurde erneut von Gitarrist und Sänger Jan Oberg in dessen Hidden Planet Studio produziert und wird am 9. August 2024 via The Lasting Dose Records erscheinen. Das Cover-Artwork stammt von Benedikt Demmer.

Die Progressive Metal-Band ATHENA XIX unterschrieb Ende 2022 einen Labeldeal bei Atomic Fire Records. Mit dem neuen Label gibt die italienische Band, die um die Jahrtausendwende als ATHENA drei Alben veröffentlicht hatte, nun ihr Comeback: “The Conscience Of Everything” ist als Lyric-Video bei YouTube abrufbar.

Den Namenswechsel erklärt Sänger Fabio Lione:

“Da es heutzutage viele Bands mit dem Namen ATHENA gibt, haben wir uns entschieden, unserem Namen den Zusatz ‘XIX’ zu geben. Es passt perfekt, denn es war das Jahr der Wiedervereinigung aller ursprünglichen Mitglieder, als wir anfingen, alle Ideen, die wir hatten, zu sammeln und aufzunehmen.”

From Osnabrück to Hamburg to Dublin, Walking Home Alone accompanied Rosa Feodora throughout her most defining and significant years of personal transformation. Feodora wrote the song in 2021, shot the music video in 2022, and recorded it in 2024. Such a prolonged process of developing the song witnessed her evolution as an artist.

In a world where solitude offers both solace and unease, Walking Home Alone delves into the profound loneliness of the night. Unacknowledged faces drift past, propelling one towards fleeting comforts. Yet within this isolation, a new presence emerges, offering a sense of belonging and transforming the experience into a newfound sense of home.

Rosa Feodora’s music resonates deeply in troubled, vulnerable moments. Determined to inspire self-awareness, Feodora bravely invites us to confront our fears and give voice to them, so we may all hear and understand our own struggles. Walking Home Alone reveals the universal experience of loneliness, frustration, and sadness. It reminds us that by finding strength and light within ourselves, we can support each other through the darkness, fostering connection and understanding. Feodora’s intense, resonant contralto, reminiscent of the power in Florence and the Machine, conveys the deep sorrow and angst of abandonment. The chorus, however, offers optimism; a light at the end of the tunnel.

Die Technical Brutal Death Metal-Band CARNOPHAGE hat einen Labeldeal bei Transcending Obscurity Records unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen werden die Türken aus Ankara am 2. August 2024 ihr neues Album “Matter of a Dark Nature” veröffentlichen. Es ist nach “Deformed Future//Genetic Nightmare” (2008) und “Monument” (2016) das dritte Album der Band. Del Alien, the punk-turned-goth rebel, is always digging for the truth and the mysteries behind the mysteries. Then there’s Max Rael, a guy who fell in love with using music to build his own universe, escaping reality one track at a time. Max’s obsession with music started young, hopping between genres until Britpop’s downfall led him straight into trance.

Their band, History of Guns, was a major force in the UK’s underground industrial scene in the 2000s, drawing inspiration from heavyweights like Killing Joke, PWEI, Bauhaus, Coil, Joy Division, Sisters of Mercy, Nine Inch Nails, and Swans. They also hit iconic spots like Whitby Gothic Weekend and headed up Futurepunk and Back to the Futurepunk events.

Half Light, their latest LP, is a wild mix of anti-authority vibes and musical escapism, perfect for those who live for the underground. The sense of refuge we experience mirrors our craving for transformation; it’s the universal balance between our drive to create something unique and our commitment to making it happen. Blending spoken word poetry with bizarre cyberpunk vibes, this collection of songs is both deeply disarming and introspective.

Half Light is a sophisticated and refined exploration of humanity and its foibles; a convergence where industrial sounds meets the avant-garde and the psychedelic. For the History of Guns, it’s a new chapter, one to be enjoyed with a sense of wonder and reflection. Fans of Alien Sex Fiend, Cabaret Voltaire, Nitzer Ebb, Coil, Nine Inch Nails, Deathboy, The Prodigy, and LCD Soundsystem will find kindred spirits in this duo.

“I think most people know of either a moment, or something sadly longer, when you’re on your own, and no one knows where you are, how you are, or even if you’re alive or dead,” says Rael of When You Don’t Matter. “I think this like a History Of Guns version of a ballad, for abandonment. But whenever we have something we think is beautiful, we always have to smash it up somehow. From an existential point of view it might be true, maybe we don’t matter.  We are meaning-seeking creatures in a world with no objective meaning. Ultimately we have to find a way to make ourselves matter to ourselves.”

“It’s like the vain attempt to help people,” Del Alien adds. “Maybe they know it, maybe they don’t. It’s not a personal thing is it? Is this what society has done to us? Is it worth you thinking about? Getting cold in a box just to be burned and scattered to the wind, only to end up in the mouth of a dying junkie… or like sleeping with the sanest lunatic you ever met, but there’s no one there in the morning to make you breakfast. If the product is not good from the start, how can it be in the end?  Losing the place you stand, just to hold another’s hand.”

This balance is evident in the harmonious flow and resolution of the album, captured in tracks like No Longer Earthbound, All You Dream (You Can Never Have), and When You Don’t Matter. Our universal truths are unveiled in Drug Castle, Arcadia, and An Invitation, revealing a place of calm and wisdom in the twilights of our souls.

Mit ihrer nach “The Gatekeeper” zweiten Single “A Glimpse at the Starless Ocean” stellen TYPHONIAN ihr kommendes Studioalbum “The Gate Of The Veiled Beyond” vor. Die zweite Full-Length-Platte folgt auf die EP “The Cosmic Pendulum Of Time” (2021) und soll die Death-Metal-Wurzeln der Band um verschiedene Einflüsse von Black bis Progressive Metal erweitern.

Zum inhaltlichen Konzept haben TYPHONIAN Folgendes zu sagen:

“[…] Es ist das erste Album, das komplett in unserem fiktiven Universum spielt. Unsere Geschichte dreht sich um die fundamentalen Kräfte des Universums und all die Last, die die Existenz mit sich bringt. So, the band around master mind Maynard James Keenan has apparently decided not to disappear into oblivion, as they did for 13 years after publishing ‘10,000 Days’, which again is good news for the fans.

The second annual To The Lost Festival in Australia is happening this summer! Created as a fundraising effort for the Black Dog Institute, the festival, akin to Cold Waves in the US, celebrates and honours the lives of those lost to suicide, and aims to prevent further loss.

The event, which promises a “sonic barrage of abrasive noise, heart and soul,” will take place in Sydney on Saturday, June 22nd, and in Melbourne on August 3rd.

The To The Lost Festival aims to normalize the discussion surrounding suicide, to break the stigma associated, and to inspire a passion-fuelled approach toward the quality of life that exists outside of despair.

“We will do this vulnerably with community and noise,” says Enclave’s Pat McCarthy, organizer of the event, who says the proceeds will be split evenly between the performers and Black Dog Institute.

Enclave is the brainchild of Pat McCarthy, teaming up with bassist Ryan Adamson, synth player Nina Carter, guitarist Lachland Vercoe, and drummer Kerim Toner. This Sydney-based band is on a mission to forge genuine connections with their audience through heartfelt music.

Rooted in the Australian noise rock tradition, Enclave tips their hat to legendary acts like The Birthday Party and Lubricated Goat. Their unique sound echoes the raw energy of Scratch Acid and packs the intense punch of black metal.

Enclave’s Pat McCarthy was kind enough to talk with Post-Punk.com about the To The Lost Festival:

Enclave has been actively involved in advocating for suicide prevention and will perform at the upcoming To The Lost fundraising festivals in Sydney and Melbourne in an effort to raise awareness around suicide. Why did you choose to address this stigmatized topic through a music festival, and what makes music such a powerful platform for this message compared to other types of fundraising events?

Music is the only way I know how. We have a platform worth utilising to bring attention to problems that either affect us directly or affect the world outside of ourselves.

I have this romantic image in my head that To The L0st will make enough noise that even our lost loved ones will hear. But at the very least, it starts a conversation. The intention for me is as simple as that. It’s a safe bet that every artist on both lineups has experience with suicide or has struggled with mental health. I believe it’s a cause that resonates with most. There are ways to develop foundations to bring ourselves out of our darkest moments, I hope conversation can bring that to light.

To The Lost donates proceeds to Black Dog Institute, a not-for-profit medical research institute focusing on mental health across the lifespan. What led you to select this particular organization, and do you plan to maintain this partnership for future events?

I researched many organisations over the years, as To The Lost was a strong intention before it was brought to life. I chose Black Dog Institute as they’re a not-for-profit organisation, but specifically for its attention towards our First Nations brothers and sisters and our LGBTQ+ community. They have an ear to the ground with all struggling worlds. It feels right that in Australia we donate to Black Dog. I intend to take it overseas, and when we do we’ll branch out.

Your last EP featured a song titled To The Lost. What inspired you to name this festival after the same song, and could you explain the intention behind this connection?

Like the song, the intention is in the title. We’re connected to our lost loved ones physically and spiritually. I feel this in my core. Their presence in our lives breathes its way into everything we do.  This festival is as much about reviving the memory of all those we’ve ever lost, just as much as it is about preventing the act of taking one’s own life.

Enclave’s music has been described as abrasive and vulnerable. How do you channel such raw emotion into your sound and what do you hope listeners take away from your songs?

Honestly, I’d be lying if I said I had a ‘one method suits all’ approach. The only constant is the discipline in writing, individually and collectively. As we grow, each song says more about me or my values than the last, and it says everything about which part of ourselves we’re giving individually in that moment.

We’re writing new material, it’s very different. But at the same time it feels like a genuine progression from our last iteration.

If our listeners take away anything at all then they’ve felt a fraction of what’s been put into what we’ve crafted, and that means we’ve committed to our roles as artists. The role music has played in my life has gone through many evolutions since I was a child. From refuge, saving grace, identity and attitude – to purpose, compulsion and felt responsibility. I feel an overwhelming responsibility to create, even if it isn’t meant for anyone else.

As long as we’re making people think or feel anything at all, isn’t that all there is? Even if it’s hated, I’d welcome that. It was never meant for everyone. And if they feel something even reminiscent of what was intended when the songs were written, then that puts a kick in my step.

Musikhalle, Markneukirchen, Germany 14th June 2024Gotthard - Very Special Guests: Eclipse, The New Roses Last Friday GOTTHARD were guests at the Musikhalle Markneukirchen. They were accompanied by ECLIPSE and THE NEW ROSES. This evening was my second time at the venue. I was already a guest in March when U.D.O. played there. The Musikhalle Markneukirchen is a very modern hall. The sound of the PA system is great and so is the lighting. I know many live event locations in Saxony and the hall is state of the art in terms of sound and lighting. The two concert evenings that I was able to experience there absolutely convinced me of the location. For the good work that is done there, I wish continued success and well-attended events.

ENSIFERUM stellen mit einem Video zu “Winter Storm Vigilantes” die erste Single ihres kommenden Albums vor. Die neunte Platte der finnischen Folk-Metal-Band trägt den Titel “Winter Storm” und erscheint am 18. Oktober 2024 via  Metal Blade Records.

Sami Hinkka, Sänger und Bassist von ENSIFERUM, hat für das Album Teile seines Fantasy-Romans als Vorlage genommen:

“Ich denke, ‘Winter Storm’ eher eine Art ‘Musical’ als ein traditionelles Album: Die Texte basieren auf einem Teil meines unveröffentlichten Fantasy-Buches. Eines Tages wird es erscheinen…  Ich möchte nicht zu viel über die Handlung oder Details verraten, aber ‘Winter Storm Vigilantes’ und ‘Fatherland’ erzählen von zwei Parteien dieser Fantasy-Geschichte, den Vigilanten und einem kleinen Stamm im Norden. Die Vigilanten sind in der Lage, ein bestimmtes seltenes Elemente zu nutzen, und obwohl es in ihrer Welt bereits Magie gab, haben sie mit diesem Wissen eine völlig neue Ebene erreicht. Dieses Element scheint auf eine Weise mit lebenden Dingen zu interagieren, die selbst die weisesten Menschen nicht vollständig verstehen. Über Generationen haben sie es geschafft, mit Hilfe des Elements das Gesetz der Schwerkraft zu brechen und ihre Pferde fliegen zu lassen. Aber sie wurden rücksichtslos, gierig und wollten immer mehr von diesem Element. Ein kleiner Stamm im Norden kämpft weiter um sein Land, das die Vigilanten erobern wollen. Und diese Leute aus dem Norden werden buchstäblich bis zum letzten Mann kämpfen…
Weitere Figuren sind ein Ausgestoßener der Vigilanten, der letzte Schamane des Nordvolkes und eine geheimnisvolle Witwe. Das Album endet mit einer großen Schlacht gegen die Vigilanten und einer unheiligen Allianz zwischen dem Ausgestoßenen und dem Schamanen, der sich in einen Wolfsgeist verwandelt. Wer wird sich durchsetzen? Aber wird dies auch wirklich die letzte Schlacht sein? Das alles klingt vielleicht sehr weit hergeholt – nun, es ist ein Fantasy-Buch. Aber es ist auch eine wahrhaft epische Geschichte!”

Janne Joutsenniemi hat “Winter Storm” produziert, der Mix kommt von Jens Bogren. Als Gastmusiker waren Lassi Logrén mit Nyckelharpa und Violine an dem Album beteiligt, Mikko Mustonen sorgte für die Orchesterparts, ELEINE-Sängerin Madeleine Liljestam steuerte Gesang zum Song “Scars In My Heart” bei.

Russia’s Twin Peaks (not to be mixed up with the Chicago indie rock band) spins the tale of unsent letters in their latest single and video, Letter – which encapsulates the feeling of writing a message in a bottle but forgetting to toss it into the sea.

Twin Peaks has undergone a remarkable transformation since their humble beginnings in Kotovsk in 2002. They started with a raw, hardcore punk and grunge vibe but have now evolved into a refined post-punk and new wave sound. Blending elegant simplicity with a touch of existential reflection, they now use a drum machine paired with a minimalist ensemble of guitar, voice, bass, and keys.

This song has a distinct flavor reminiscent of KINO and early Depeche Mode: a blend of melancholy and wistfulness that stirs memories of first love and dancing in post-Soviet discos. Even though the lyrics are entirely in Russian, the emotions transcend language barriers. It’s the perfect vibe for the title track of their upcoming self-titled fifth studio album, Twin Peaks.

Director Olga Feona’s visually striking portrayal of the song delves into the realms of first love and personal introspection. The captivating scenes were expertly filmed in the charming quaintness of a provincial town or the outskirts of a bustling metropolis. The narrative unfolds as our frontman, in a nostalgic moment, decides to pen a letter to a long-lost love, portrayed by the talented makeup artist and beauty blogger Sofia Rodina. Meanwhile, the video portrays the girl going about her daily routine, eagerly checking her mailbox in anticipation of any news, only to be greeted by emptiness each time. The poignant narrative culminates with the symbolic act of burning the letters over a smoldering fire.

If you tally up all the days the West Coast Canadian trio Bae Baracus have spent together in the studio, they’ve been a band for less than three weeks. Despite that, they’ve churned out a remarkable six singles, three EPs, and a full-length album. Clearly, when these three get together, the creative sparks blast into fireworks.

The band’s story began by chance in the summer of 2020 during a socially distanced songwriting workshop at producer Lin Gardiner’s rural Sound Garden Retreat studio. This unlikely crew stumbled upon something special.

“The Bae symbiosis is undeniable. Every session, right away. We show up and blow up in the studio every time!” says multi-instrumentalist Clef Seeley.

With Lin G’s production wizardry, Clef’s multi-instrumental antics, and lead singer Dolly De Guerre’s razor-sharp lyrics, Bae Baracus manages to capture the spirit of the 21st century while dazzling with a timeless glitter. De Guerre’s voice, a velvety contralto resembling Annie Lennox’s, is moving and soulful. The band is a beautiful alchemy.

Release, the latest full-length album from West Coast trio Bae Baracus, shows off a musical evolution that sees them leaning into a darker vibe than their earlier work. With edgier guitar tones and post-punk moods, they haven’t ditched their beloved synths or their electronic music obsession. Instead, they’ve whipped up a deliciously enticing blend that’s sure to tickle your eardrums and maybe even your soul. Release explores the double-edged themes of liberation and the ennui that accompanies it. Like a 3am coffee, the album is both energetic and angst-ridden. Filled with nocturnal post-punk dance, it abandons all hope of sleep and embraces the night.

Their off-the-cuff, tongue-in-cheek aesthetic pervades their visual art too, with their record covers and videos for their singles acting as an obvious manifestation of their punky, DIY-disco ethic. Release is intentionally darker than their previous records, however. The album dives into the double-edged themes of liberation – and the ennui that comes with it. Its mood is a mix of high energy and angst. With nocturnal post-punk dance vibes, it’s given up on sleep and decided to party with the night instead.

“I’d say we’re punk at heart,” says Dolly. “There’s anger and a smart-alec attitude behind much of what we do. But our anger is tempered by our overriding love of layered melody and a dance beat. We want to party, we want you to dance.”

“Genres always feel like brand labeling to me,” Clef adds. “I prefer the mysteriousness of the music’s definition. The sound and style certainly has influences, but what you get in the end comes from our collective artistic perspectives. I never go into the process thinking ‘we gotta get the aesthetic right’. It happens naturally.”

Bae Baracus are enthusiastically looking forward to hitting the road and performing live.

James Chance, frontman of James Chance and the Contortions, has left this world at the age of 71 after a lengthy illness. according to his Facebook page. Born on April 20, 1953, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, James Siegfried, as he was first known, became a pioneering force in the No Wave movement of the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Chance was known for his electrifying stage presence, blending the raw energy of punk with the free-spirited improvisation of jazz. His wild saxophone riffs and frenetic dance moves made him a standout figure in the underground scene. Before making his mark in New York City, he played in a Milwaukee band called Death. Moving to the Big Apple in 1976, he joined Flaming Youth and, with Lydia Lunch, co-founded Teenage Jesus and the Jerks.

In 1977, he formed James Chance and The Contortions. Chance’s bonkers avant-garde stylings became synonymous with a sound that defied categorization, merging dissonance with danceability. Notable members included guitarist Pat Place (Bush Tetras), Jody Harris (guitar), George Scott III (bass), Don Christensen (drums), Adele Bertei (keyboard/vocals), and Bradly Field (drums). Despite their brief initial run, they quickly became known for their eclectic mix of punk, jazz, and funk. The Contortions’ albums included 1979’s Buy under the name James White and the Blacks, and 1980’s Off White in 1980, featuring Lydia Lunch.

After disbanding in the early 1980s due to lineup changes and other projects, James Chance continued his improvisational jazz-punk-noise concoctions with bands like the Flaming Demonics, James Chance & the Sardonic Symphonics, James Chance and Terminal City, and James Chance and Les Contortions. Each of these groups was a delightful experiment in chaos, blending genres with the carefree audacity of a Zen master stirring up a raucous tea ceremony.

James Chance was the perfect embodiment of the No Wave era in Downtown New York  – a mainstay with the Max’s and CBGB crowds and the ZE Records gang. His unique sax-driven funk was a wild fusion of James Brown’s rhythm, avant-garde jazz, and Iggy Pop’s raw intensity – with the talent level of your average middle schooler. This audacious blend reverberated through countless bands that followed, whether they knew it or not – a playful reminder that the charm of art often lies not in perfection, but in the boldness to groove to your own chaotic beat. His bizarre, manic take on Michael Jackson’s Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough is, quite frankly, the stuff of legend.

Chance, in his dapper white tux, pushed boundaries (and occasionally audience members) and challenged norms with a truly off-kilter swagger. He collaborated with and left his fearlessly punk jazz funk brand on other notable artists and bands, including Tuxedomoon, Arto Lindsay, Blondie/Debbie Harry, Watchers, and Brian Eno. His partner Anya Phillips (co-founder of the famed Mudd Club) also played a huge role in his early career as his manager, stylist, and partner until her tragic death in 1981 from brain cancer. (Chance dedicated the album Sax Maniac to her in 1982.)

James Chance’s final years were, unfortunately, marred by health issues. A European tour was cut short thanks to a sudden health crisis. In October 2020, his longtime partner, Judy Taylor, passed away after battling a debilitating illness for years. The family didn’t disclose the cause of death, but his brother shared the news on social media today. It seems the universe had a few final curveballs for James, who, true to form, faced them with the same offbeat spirit he brought to his music.

James Chance left us today with a fiery trail of broken bottles, broken-down songs, and broken hearts. Godspeed, crazy sax man. New York City will never be the same.
