Compulsion is an ever-present force in our lives, whether it be through relationships, substances, or dreams. Each brings thrilling highs but also has a darker side, possibly leading to despair. Relationships can lift us up or turn possessive; substances offer fleeting joy but can lead to addiction; dreams inspire yet can distract us from the present. In their track Machete Romance, London post-punk act Heavy Wild dives into this duality, exploring the excitement and volatility of our deepest urges, reflecting the intense highs and lows of the human experience.

This track takes you on a deep dive into the darker realms of shoegaze psychedelia, with the haunting vibes of early 90s goth-infused alternative rock. Think of it as a moody cocktail of Cold Cave, the Horrors, and Traitrs, with Ride, My Bloody Valentine, and Chapterhouse. Machete Romance is packed with wailing synths, jagged guitars, and drums that hit with pinpoint accuracy. The vocals swing between wistful melancholy and raw intensity, adding a layer of profound emotional depth.

The visualizer, directed by Lea Emmery, unfolds like a series of unsettling dreams, each scene more surreal than the last. Picture this: a house ablaze, a lonely road at night, a haunting Louisiana swamp, candles in a mysterious ritual, some intriguing figures, and a spooky cemetery…as if someone opened a Pandora’s box of nocturnal mysteries and decided to start running a projector in Plato’s cave.

Trit95, emerging from the humble land of Santee, California, is a bedroom pop sorcerer conjuring dreamy lo-fi melodic soundscapes that feel like a portal to a parallel world hued in neons, pastels, and Kodachrome. Since 2017, Tristan Lilyquist, the alchemist behind the synths, has been conjuring cotton candy synthpop magic right from his own cozy hideaway. Imagine thirteen tracks of hazy, nostalgic tunes—like stumbling upon a mixtape from your wonderfully misspent youth. It’s part twee-pop, part soul-baring confession, and all-around charm, like finding out your quirky next-door neighbor is a secret musical genius, spinning gold out of daydreams and night-time musings. Forever resonates with the wistful yearning of promises made and time slipping through our fingers. It’s the soundtrack of late-night Tumblr scrolls, where dreams of eternity clash with the reality of fleeting moments, all wrapped in a DIY aesthetic.

Guardian Angel hovers with an ethereal presence, offering solace in times of turmoil. This track is like a whispered prayer on a rainy day, providing a comforting embrace as it echoes through the chambers of our hearts. New Surroundings feels like opening a fresh chapter, yet with the ghostly remnants of the past lingering at the edges. It’s a strange, evocative tune that celebrates the unknown while mourning what’s been left behind. No Name drifts through the air like the perfume of your long-gone grandmother, capturing the essence of anonymity and the beauty found in the unnoticed. This track is a wistful nod to those moments and people who pass through our lives like shadows.

Photograph of Yesterday is an echoing reflection of the past, reminding us of the beauty and sadness intertwined in the snapshots of our lives. Plastic Toy plays with the bittersweet contrast between childhood innocence and the strange reality of growing up.  Rain Coated Lovers waltzes through the mist; an evocative, echoing ballad.

Ruby shines with a reflective glow and the echoing charm of a gem hidden away, only to be rediscovered and cherished anew. The forlorn Tape rewinds the years, playing back memories with a nostalgic hiss and pop of the analogue days, where each recorded moment carried a charming imperfection, echoing the imperfect beauty of our past.

The album finishing with Wine pours out a rich blend of wistfulness and reflection, like a vintage Tumblr post full of poignant reflections. It’s a strange, echoing melody that swirls through the air, leaving behind the bittersweet aftertaste of times gone by.

Die Instrumental Post-Rock-Band MONO hat mit “Hear the Wind Sing” einen weiteren Video-Clip von ihrem kommenden Album “Oath” veröffentlicht.

Zuvor ist ein Video zu “Run On” erschienen.  Das Video wurde von dem in Dalian lebenden Künstler Jiang Kun erstellt und zielt darauf ab, die neuen Bedeutungen und emotionalen Ausdrücke zu erforschen, die entstehen, wenn sich Musik und visuelle Kunst kreuzen. Jiang versucht, den Geist der Musik von MONO mit traditioneller chinesischer Kunst und moderner Bildsprache zu verschmelzen, um ein neuartiges künstlerisches Erlebnis zu schaffen. Dazu verwendet er fast 36.000 Bilder, in denen er östliche Tusche- und westliche Ölmaltechniken kombiniert.

Zuvor hat die Band mit “Oath” den Titeltrack als Video-Clip veröffentlicht. Das zwölfte Album der Band ist am 14. Juni 2024 via Pelagic Records erschienen. Produziert wurde das Album von Steve Albini.

Am 28. Juni 2024 erscheint das neue Album der Death Metal-Band 200 STAB WOUNDS: “Manual Manic Procedures” wird via Metal Blade Records veröffentlicht. Nach “Ride the Flatline” – ein Song aus der Feder von Bassist Ezra Cook, der von einem Chemieunfall im Ohio River inspiriert wurde, nachdem ein Zug entgleist war – gibt es mit “Gross Abuse” nun einen weiteren Video-Clip.

Mit einem Video zu “Hands Of Eternity” stellten 200 STAB WOUNDS im April den ersten Song der neuen Platte vor.

200 STAB WOUND-Sänger/Gitarrist Steve Buhl bezeichnet den Track als seinen Lieblingssong auf dem Album:

“Dieser Song ist ein gutes Beispiel für unsere neue musikalische Ausrichtung:  Die schweren Riffs sind natürlich noch da. Aber es gibt auch gute Melodien, nicht nur verrückte Blastbeats und ‘Riffs Riffs Riffs’. ‘Hands Of Eternity’ ist strukturierter, grooviger und melodischer, aber immer noch heavy. Das ist eines meiner Lieblingsstücke.”

“Manual Manic Procedures” wurde von Andy Nelson produziert und gemischt, das Mastering ist von Brad Boatwright.

Im Herbst 2024 sind 200 STAB WOUNDS zusammen mit with GATECREEPER and ENFORCED auf Europatour, in Deutschland sind Konzerte in acht Städten angekündigt.

BEAST IN BLACK melden sich mit einer neuen Single zurück: Das Musikvideo “Power Of The Beast” ist der erste neue Track seit dem Album “Dark Connection” (2021).

Gitarrist Anton Kabanen beschreibt den Start des nächsten Kapitels wie folgt:

„’Power Of The Beast’ bringt uns einen Schritt weiter, unsere Leidenschaft für energiegeladene Musik, unaufhaltsame Beats, solide Melodien, (Synth)Riffs und eine bedeutungsvolle Botschaft zu zeigen. Es ist allen gewidmet, die Ermutigung, Motivation, Entschlossenheit und innere Stärke brauchen, um vorwärts zu streben. Die Botschaft des Liedes ist wie die unnachgiebige Haltung und ermächtigende Entschlossenheit von Guts, dem Protagonisten aus dem Manga ‘Berserk’. Die Texte sind tatsächlich eine Mischung aus ‘Berserk’ und meiner eigenen Lebensansicht und Erfahrungen.

Mit musikalischen Einflüssen, die stark von dem sogenannten Super Eurobeat durchdrungen sind, den ich über die Jahre aufgenommen habe, denke ich, ist es ziemlich gerechtfertigt – aber natürlich mit einem Augenzwinkern – dieses Lied als Super Eurobeast zu beschreiben! Die Melodic / Metallic Hardcore-Band STINKY stellt ihre neue Single “Down In The Dumps” mit einem Clip bei YouTube vor. Das Stück fungiert zugleich als Vorbote des kommenden Studioalbums “Solace”, das Ende 2024 erscheinen soll. Genauere Details sind zwar noch nicht bekannt, Drummer Paul jedoch stellt ein abwechslungsreiches und melodisches Album in Aussicht:

“‘Down in the Dumps’ handelt von den Qualen des Burnouts und dem langen Kampf, sich davon zu erholen. Mit diesem neuen, mehr von Metal/Modern Hardcore geprägten Stück zeigen die Mitglieder von STINKY ihren Willen, neue Horizonte zu erkunden, und versprechen ein abwechslungsreiches und immer melodischeres Album.”

“Solace” ist die erste Platte mit runderneuertem Line-up: Zu Clair (Vocals) und Paul (Drums) stießen mit Max (Bass), Enzo (Gitarre) und Clément (Gitarre) gleich drei neue Mitglieder hinzu.

Nürnberg, a post-punk duo from Minsk, Belarus, consisting of Yury Luhautsou on vocals, bass, and synths, and Aleh Sautin on guitar, has just announced a European tour supporting the release of their third studio album, Adkaz. After a successful tour in the EU and two subsequent tours in Latin America, Mexico and China in spring 2024, Nürnberg are ready to hit the road again.

Since forming in 2016, Nürnberg’s artistic vision has been deeply influenced by the melancholic ambiance of post-Soviet urban landscapes. Their music explores existential themes and the social issues of today’s industrial societies, capturing the weight and weariness of modern life. Despite this bleak outlook, their work resonates with the fundamental human capacities for love and compassion.

Nürnberg’s sound, marked by a moody ambiance, is infused with palpable energy, reminiscent of Gang of Four, Chameleons, Talk Talk, and Killing Joke. Their music combines melancholy, gloom, and desolation, adorned with shimmering reverb and bittersweet melodies. Compassion nestles within this fatalistic dance music, built on kick-and-clap drum beats, resonant melodic basslines, and piercing, wistful guitar leads that intertwine with Luhautsou’s emotive vocals.

Adkaz, which translates to “answer” in English, hints at the thematic depth within and offers a thoughtful reflection on the individual’s existence during pivotal historical moments. Their songs tackle themes of aversion and mental health, striking a chord with those familiar with the contemporary Eastern European experience. This nuanced exploration of the psychological impacts of transformative times resonates deeply with listeners facing similar struggles.

But it’s not all heavy introspection; the album also dips into tales of love and personal experiences, adding a bit of warmth to the mix. These themes of love and connection provide a counterbalance to the more challenging aspects, presenting a well-rounded view of the human experience. It’s a bit like finding a cozy nook in a storm, where amidst all the chaos, there’s still room for connection and warmth.

Insomnia tells the tale of yearning for someone absent, with nightly dreams and shadow-chasing that vanish come morning light. Horad paints a picture of a perpetually gloomy town, where the sun’s on a permanent holiday but the city buzzes on. Amid this cold and loneliness, there’s a longing to spend a cherished night with someone special.

Adkaz sings of monotony and disinterest, where every day feels like a rinse-and-repeat cycle. They’re on a quest for answers, hoping to forget everything just one last time without overthinking it. Miesca dreams of a serene escape where every whisper can be heard, despite the lurking danger and a heartfelt plea to stay put.

Adliha brings us into a cold war between two hearts, with one firing shots and the other standing firm like the Berlin Wall. Despite the battles and losses, there’s an underlying hope for change, dreaming of a fresh start akin to the Prague Spring. Vada narrates a long walk toward the water, yearning to dive into its depths and find solace in the darkness and silence. The journey is fascinating, even if the connection to the other person fades away.

Strach delves into the frightening realities of life and how fear takes hold, tightening its grip and overshadowing understanding. On the other hand, Pacalunak portrays a tense relationship where one person begs for distance, turning down romantic gestures like roses. Despite the tension, the speaker longs for intimacy and love, rather than mere friendship. They hope to thaw the emotional coldness within the other, but face the painful rejection that they can’t be together. It’s a bit like trying to hug a snowman—chilly and ultimately a bit dampening.

Adkaz by Nürnberg

Adkaz is out now under the German label Young and Cold Records, recorded in collaboration with Raman Kamahorcaŭ (Molchat Doma) and their sound engineer Andrej Babroŭka. Complementing the music, the cover and artwork for the album have been crafted by Belgrado’s Jonathan Sirit, adding a stunning Constructivist visual dimension.

Since their inception, Nürnberg has charted an impressive course. Their beginnings can be traced back to a demo released in August 2017. From there, their musical repertoire has blossomed, comprising two albums, Skryvaj and Paharda, two EPs, three singles, and two remix albums. Their influence extends well beyond the borders of Belarus, as evidenced by their European tour and performances at notable festivals such as Waves Vienna, Eurosonic Noorderslag, and AtlasWeekend Kyiv, spanning Belarus, Poland, and Russia.

Die finnische Doom Metal Band GRAIN OF PAIN hat ein Lyric-Video zum Song „The Witch“ veröffentlicht. Die Komposition ist auf dem Debütalbum „The Moon Lights The Way“ enthalten, welches am 31. Mai über Noble Demon veröffentlicht wurde. https://music.nobledemon.com/way

Das Gothic Rock-Duo ZETRA hat nun auch ein Musikvideo zur Single “Shatter The Mountain” produziert. Als Gast zu hören ist hier außerdem Sólveig Matthildur (KAELAN MIKLA). Noch im Mai teilte die Formation den  Clip zu “The Mirror”. Das selbstbetitelte Debütalbum “Zetra” erscheint am 13. September 2024.

Im April stellten ZETRA ein ein Video zu ihrem Song “Starfall” bei YouTube  vor. Als Gast ist außerdem Serena Cherry (SVALBARD) zu hören. Das Stück foglt auf die Coverversion von THE CUREs “Burn“. Im Frühjahr 2024 ist die Band auf Tour, bei den Terminen in Deutschland spielen ZETRA im Vorprogram von VV.

Here I am in the summer of sorrow
I thought we’d last, forever we’d stay
Ah, loss and longing, those old familiar adversaries who visit us when we least expect them. In the grand theatre of life, love sometimes plays the trickster, turning from a steadfast companion into a fickle stranger. Our story here descends into the bleak gothic rock of Summer of Sorrow from British newcomers Black Rose Moves, a season marked by the bittersweet taste of heartbreak. It’s like planning a grand picnic only to have it rain—relentlessly.

Grant Leon and Mark Neat of Black Rose Moves aren’t exactly the types to bring you sunshine and singalongs. Instead, they concoct a delightful mix of darkwave and post-punk, just the thing for those late-night dance sessions tinged with a touch of melancholy. Their sound, like savouring a bittersweet chocolate, borrows a page or two from the early works of The Cult, Sisters of Mercy, and the darker offerings of 60s garage, sprinkled with the introspective punch of Interpol, with driving basslines, assertive guitars, dramatic synths, and Grant Leon’s haunting vocals.

Summer of Sorrow serves as a fevered prayer for relief; a heartfelt plea to the universe as one’s partner, in the darkest hours, confesses a lack of love. Emotions twist and turn like a rollercoaster gone rogue, leaving behind the tattered remains of what was once a passionate relationship. It’s a bit like finding your favorite old sweater, only to discover it’s now full of moth holes and memories.

But here’s the twist: in acknowledging the remnants, the tattered pieces of our past, we find a certain freedom. Heartbreak, while profoundly painful, is a peculiar waltz with our own vulnerability and strength. It’s in these shadowy corners that we often discover the most about ourselves—our capacity to feel deeply, to love fiercely, and yes, even to let go gracefully.

JORDAN RUDESS hat eine neue Single veröffentlicht: “The Alchemist” gibt es in Bild und Ton bei YouTube. Das Stück ist wie “Embers” ein Vorgeschmack auf das kommende Solo-Album des DREAM THEATER-Keyboarders, welches den Titel “Permission To Fly” trägt und am 6. September 2024 via InsideOut Music auf CD, Vinyl sowie digital erscheinen wird.

An “Embers” mitgewirkt haben zudem Schlagzeuger Darby Todd sowie Sänger That Joe Payne. Das Gitarrensolo stammt von Bastian Martinez. Rudess kommentiert:

“‘Embers’, die Initialzündung meines kommenden Albums, gibt den Ton für meine neueste musikalische Solo-Reise an. Ursprünglich für die innovative Plattform von Moises kreiert, fängt dieser Track einen sanfteren Vibe ein, der sich von den restlichen progressiven Stücken des Albums unterscheidet. Für die Prog-Fans da draußen: Keine Angst, dieses Album deckt die ganze Bandbreite meines musikalischen Ausdrucks ab, und ihr werdet eure Polymeter und Snarling Pigs bekommen. Die Inspiration für diesen Track fiel mit einem Projekt zusammen, für das ich gebeten wurde, für die App Moises zu arbeiten, eine Technologie, die Standard-Audiodateien in separate Tracks umwandeln kann und dabei auch Akkorde, Texte und mehr anzeigt. Ich hoffe, ihr habt Spaß beim Anhören von Embers und wenn ihr inspiriert seid, eure eigene musikalische Zusammenarbeit zu diesem Stück hinzuzufügen, könnt ihr es auf Moises ausprobieren.”

This autumn, Substance Festival returns for an expanded five-night run across three cities, with each night featuring a mix of dark rock, high-octane industrial, pulsating electronica, and cutting-edge post-punk and darkwave from an impressive lineup of artists.

San Antonio kicks off the festivities at The Paper Tiger on Friday, October 25, and Saturday, October 26, with performances from Black Marble, Sacred Skin, XTR Human, Madeline Goldstein, Topographies, Secret Attraction, Rosegarden Funeral Party, and many more.

The celebration continues over Halloween weekend in San Francisco at The Great American Music Hall, featuring SRSQ, Black Marble, King Woman, Houses of Heaven, Kontravoid, and other favorites.

The final leg of the festival takes place on Saturday, November 2, at The Belasco in Los Angeles. Revelers will be treated to an eclectic mix of global talent, including Cold Cave, Ultra Sunn, Llora, Ritual Howls, Sleek Teeth, and numerous other incredible acts.

Pre-sales for San Francisco and Los Angeles began on June 26th. These limited-capacity events are expected to sell out quickly, so secure your tickets soon.

Die Modern Metal / Alternative Metal-Band SIAMESE hat ihren Track “Chemistry” als Single ausgekoppelt. Die Nummer stammt wie “Predator” vom kommenden Album “Elements”, das am 9. August 2024 via Long Branch Records auf CD, Vinyl sowie digital erscheinen wird.

Noch im April veröffentliche die Gruppe das Stück “Through My Head” bei YouTube. An dem Song wirkt RESOLVE-Sänger Anthony Diliberto mit. Außerdem stellte die Band “Vertigo” mit einem Visualizer-Clip bei YouTube vor.

Der Track folgt auf die Single “On Fire”, zu der die Gruppe ein Musikvideo gedreht hat.

Stöberst du gerne in Plattenläden rum? Mit dem Zeigefinger die Platten durchflippen, auf der Suche nach der Erstpressung zum fairen Preis, dem Vinyl in Wunschfarbe, der obskuren Single in einer 20er Auflage, dabei diesen ganz besonderen Geruch nach Staub und altem Papier in der Nase: Plattenläden sind “wichtige Kulturorte und soziale Orte der Begegnung und des Austauschs”, findet auch die Bundesregierung und hat einen Preis für Plattenläden ausgelobt.

Der hat natürlich einen sehr, sehr deutschen Namen: „EMIL_Der deutsche Preis für Schallplattenfachgeschäfte“. Der EMIL im Namenskonstrukt bezieht sich auf Emil Berliner, den Erfinder der Schallplatte. Er meldete im Jahr 1887 ein Patent auf das Grammophon und den dazugehörigen Tonträger an.

Die Gewinner*innen erwartet ein Preisgeld bis zu 25.000 Euro, dazu gibt’s ein Gütesiegel. Insgesamt stehen für den Preis eine Million Euro aus dem Bundeskulturhaushalt bereit. Die erste Preisverleihung findet am 1. Dezember 2024 in Köln statt.

Noch bis 16. August 2024 können sich Betreiber*innen von stationären Plattenläden in Deutschland für eine der Auszeichnungen bewerben.  Geehrt werden 16 Schallplattenfachgeschäfte in vier Kategorien:

Die Preisträger*innen ermittelt eine Jury aus Musiker*innen, Journalist*innen, Musikkurator*innen, Labelbetreiber*innen und Vertreter*innen von Vertrieben.

Staatsministerin Claudia Roth, die in den 80er Jahren übrigens Managerin von TON STEINE SCHERBEN war, erklärt, warum Plattenläden eine Anerkennung verdient haben:

„Plattenläden sind wichtige Kulturorte und soziale Orte der Begegnung und des Austauschs. Darüber hinaus führen viele Plattenläden auch Veranstaltungen und Konzerte durch. Ihr Beitrag für unser kulturelles Leben wird bislang allerdings nicht ausreichend gewürdigt. Unser neuer Preis ist daher auch ein Zeichen der Anerkennung und Wertschätzung für die hohe Bedeutung der Plattenläden für unsere Musikkultur. Mit dem EMIL erfüllen wir einmal mehr unser Ziel aus dem Koalitionsvertrag, Kultur für alle zu ermöglichen und dabei die reiche Vielfalt von künstlerischen Ausdrucksformen und unterschiedlichen Subkulturen zu berücksichtigen.“

Bunker, Dresden, Germany 22nd June 2024Psychic Transformation with Slow Slow Loris, Dalila Kayros & Danilo Casti, Schloss Tegal, Statiqbloom, Operant Happy 25th birthday club debil! On June 22, 2024, Bunker Club Dresden hosted the 25th anniversary celebration of club debil, titled “Psychic Transformation”. The event showcased an eclectic mix of Avant-Garde, Industrial, and Dark Electronic music, featuring performances by some of the genre’s most innovative acts. I did not attend the entire show, only my longtime favourite STATIQBLOOM, and DALILA KAYROS & DANILO CASTI. The line-up featured interesting blend of musical soundscapes and atmospheres.

It took almost two years for Kalte Nacht’s latesest album  U R G E to come to life, evolving through countless hours in home studios. Throughout these eight tracks, the creators distilled key internal moments of their deep, unavoidable journey inward and expressed how these experiences felt through all five senses.

U R G E (out now via Cold Transmission) is an album that embodies the strong desire to co-exist, co-create, reunite, trust, and bring hope closer to everyone. The band asserts that it is composed of tiny bits of conscious actions taken daily, nurtured, and enveloped by love. It represents an effort to shed light on the shadowy corners of human existence, approaching the essence of being human with tenderness and honesty.

With this album, Kalte Nacht conveys an intense urge to act—not just react—driven by a sudden realization that feels like an electric shock. Initially met with fear and avoidance, this impulse grows stronger, pushing individuals to confront their true selves and defy their imposed identities. As anger and isolation give way to hope, they emphasize the importance of self-worth, courage, unity, trust, and ultimately, the transformative power of embracing one’s true self and connecting with others.

Kicking things off with Runaway, this track dives headfirst into the process of healing and escape. It navigates through the pain and scars of the past while seeking solace and companionship. The song captures the struggle of running from fear and the crowd, yet still manages to face each new day with a gritty resilience. Despite feeling overwhelmed, it’s all about confronting the past head-on and finding the strength to move forward.

Next In A Wild Wave dives into a profound yearning for escape and emotional release. The speaker is in search of someone to help shoulder their pain, revive their spirit, and face their fears head-on. They crave both connection and solitude, aiming to embrace the light while also seeking a sanctuary to hide away. Dare To Defy navigates the intriguing paradox of being complete strangers who have endured similar trials. Despite the perceived dangers and misunderstandings, these individuals defy expectations and break the mold as game changers, all while safeguarding their inner essence.

A Howling Waltz brings back the nostalgia of winter cherries, painting a picture of deep connections and the drive to turn pain into power. It’s all about shedding fears, reigniting love, and chasing endless dreams. The imagery speaks to the hope of touching hearts and nurturing souls, with winter cherries symbolizing tears and shared memories.

The Last Breath delves into the journey of self-discovery and transformation, highlighting inner strength and the importance of moving forward.

Trust Fall emphasizes the need for self-awareness and recognizing one’s own needs. It’s about tuning into your heartbeat and inner truth to decide when to stay or go. The vivid imagery of light and exploding hearts represents moments of clarity, stressing the need for trust and understanding in making life’s choices.

Where The Deep Seas Meet tackles the tough challenge of changing a violent world view, highlighting the power of collective action and inner strength. The track reflects on the importance of luck, time, and the occasional granted wish, pushing for unity and perseverance. The imagery underscores the need to stand together, release past conflicts, and embrace a unified way of living, even as the world crumbles around us.

Kalte Nacht, which began as Nikos K.’s solo venture in 2017, quickly expanded into a duo with Myrto Styloy enhancing the project with her vocals. The fusion of dark-wave, urban beats, and atmospheric soundscapes defines their music, characterized by haunting vocals, the warmth of analog synths, and the rhythm of drum machines. Drawing from the vibrancy of the Athenian underground, intimate emotions, and the intricacies of human connections, Kalte Nacht navigates the fine line between the shadows and the light.

Their journey took a significant leap in March 2020 with the release of their self-titled 8-track album through Geheimnis Records, available in both digital and vinyl formats. The album’s instant popularity led to sold-out copies within the first few months, leading to the band gracing festivals like Wave Gotik Treffen, Sinner’s Day Summer Festival, and Death Disco Open Air Festival. In March 2021, the digital single ‘Our Moments Are Answers’ marked another milestone, followed by their alignment with Cold Transmission label in May 2022, which saw the release of their debut album on CD.

Am 13. September 2024 veröffentlichen AGRYPNIE ihr neues Album “erg”. Zum Reinhören hat die Black Metal-Band einen Ausschnitt aus dem Track „Aus Rauchlosem Feuer“ bei YouTube veröffentlicht.  Bei dem Song ist Phil von SECRETS OF THE MOON und CRONE als Gastmusiker zu hören.

INSECT ARK loten wie kaum eine andere Formation den Raum zwischen Heaviness und Atmosphäre aus. Mit ihrem vierten Album „Raw Blood Singing“ beginnt aber selbst für das wandlungsfähige Duo eine neue Ära: Komponistin und Multiinstrumentalistin Dana Schecher hat sich mittlerweile in Berlin niedergelassen und in Drummer Tim Wyskida einen kongenialen neuen Songwriting-Partner gefunden. Dass sie mittlerweile wieder singt, verkommt da beinahe zur Nebensache. Grund genug, bei Dana nachzufragen.

„Raw Blood Singing“ schlägt für INSECT ARK ein neues Kapitel auf. Du bist von NYC nach Berlin umgezogen und hast dich mit Tim Wyskida zusammengetan. Siehst du das auch als eine Wiedergeburt?

Hallo Christoph, vielen Dank für das Interview, es freut mich, dass du dich mit dem Album auseinandergesetzt hast.

Eine Wiedergeburt, auf jeden Fall; besonders in einer Duo-Band, hat all das das Potential, sich drastisch zu verändern wenn eine neue Person einsteigt. In diesem Fall hat es viel mehr bewirkt als erwartet, und das daraus resultierende Album ist eine klare Entwicklung hin zu etwas, das sich sehr neu anfühlt.

Warum hast du NYC verlassen und was liebst du an Berlin?

Ich bin ungewollt umgezogen – ich saß während der „The Vanishing“-Tour in Berlin fest, als die gesamte Tour und alle meine Pläne wegen Covid abgesagt wurden. Ich habe mich entschieden, nicht nach NYC zurückzukehren; es war eine klare Entscheidung, nachdem ich die Vor- und Nachteile sorgfältig abgewogen hatte. In Europa gibt es einen Respekt vor der Kultur, den die USA nicht haben. Es gibt Kunst und Musik, überall und ständig. Meiner Erfahrung nach ist es also ein besserer Ort, um als Künstler zu leben, vor allem im Vergleich zu New York City.

Wie hast du Tim gefunden und wie ist die Zusammenarbeit mit ihm im Vergleich zu Ashley und Andy?

Tim und ich waren bereits befreundet, und ich kannte seine Musik und Bands wie KHANATE und BLIND IDIOT GOD und war ein großer Fan seines Spiels. Als er nach Berlin zog und ich einen Schlagzeuger brauchte, passte das natürlich. Jeder Musiker hat seine eigene Art zu arbeiten, und die Zusammenarbeit mit Ashley (Spungin, auch bei SPIRIT POSSESSION – Anm. d. Verf.) und Andy (Patterson, ex-SUBROSA – Anm. d. Verf) war natürlich auch sehr gut. Tim und ich passen sehr gut zusammen – sowohl in Bezug auf das, was wir gerne hören, als auch auf unsere Neigungen und unsere Arbeitsmoral. Wir machen uns beide gerne die Hände schmutzig und graben uns in viele Details ein, um alle kleinsten Ecken eines Songs, eines Riffs oder einer Melodie zu erforschen, wobei wir großen Wert auf Dynamik und Gefühl legen. Wir sind beide sehr anspruchsvoll und haben den gleichen Sinn für kreativen Antrieb.

Die wichtigste stilistische Veränderung bei INSECT ARK ist der Einsatz von Gesang und Texten, und ich bin sehr froh, deine Stimme wieder zu hören. Wenn ich mich nicht irre, war der einzige INSECT ARK-Song bisher „Piledriver“. Warum hast du dich nach drei Alben entschieden, wieder zu singen?

Du hast Recht! „Piledriver“ war die B-Seite der ersten Veröffentlichung, einer 7“, und da habe ich gesagt, nee, vier Instrumente spielen und alleine touren ist schon zu viel, lass uns den Gesang erst mal weglassen. Ich mochte auch die Idee, unsichtbarer zu sein, als eine Nicht-Person hinter der Musik.

Um jetzt wieder auf den Gesang zurückzukommen: Tim und ich wollten sehen, wie weit wir die neuen Songs entwickeln können. Sie hatten sich drastisch verändert, als wir anfingen, sie auf der Grundlage meiner Demos zu überarbeiten, vor allem die Stücke, die am Ende mit Gesang versehen wurden.  Es war eine natürliche Entwicklung, sowohl kreativ als auch persönlich, und ich hatte etwas Ermutigung von außen.

Wie arbeitet ihr beim Songwriting? Gibt es zuerst eine Basis von Riffs, oder fangt ihr manchmal auch mit anderen Instrumenten an? Wie lange dauert es, bis ein Song fertig ist, und baut ihr auch Elemente der Improvisation ein?

Es gibt keine einheitliche Vorgehensweise, aber normalerweise beginnt es mit einer Zeile, einer Melodie, einem Riff und so weiter. Das kann auf jedem Instrument sein. Wenn es mich begeistert, wächst die Idee schnell und ich mache daraus ein Demo. Die Zeit bis zur Fertigstellung kann zwischen einer Woche und mehreren Monaten liegen. Bei Auftritten lasse ich gerne Raum für Improvisation, aber beim Schreiben und Aufnehmen mag ich es, eine gewisse Struktur zu haben, damit man eine klare Vorstellung davon hat, wie die Teile zusammenpassen, wie sie sich gegenseitig beeinflussen. Mit mehr Leuten in einer Band ergibt sich das von selbst, aber in einem Duo, wo ich so viele Instrumente spiele, möchte ich meine Entscheidungen mit einer gewissen Objektivität treffen.

Hat sich der Songwriting-Prozess verändert, seit du nach Berlin gezogen bist und Tim dazugekommen ist?

Es hat sich nicht wirklich verändert, aber erweitert. Tim und ich arbeiten von Natur aus auf eine sehr ähnliche Art und Weise – zuhören, Ideen ausprobieren, nachhorchen und sehen, wie kleine Änderungen im Gefühl den Song verändern und erleuchten können… das macht es produktiv und inspirierend. Ich habe traditionell allein Demos gemacht, die die Stimmung vorgeben, aber jetzt, wo wir so intensiv zusammengearbeitet haben, wird die nächste Runde vielleicht anders sein.

Was die Gitarren betrifft, verwenden INSECT ARK nur Bass und Lap Steel Guitar, aber keine traditionelle E-Gitarre? Was ist das Tolle an der Lap-Steel-Gitarre?

Bass ist mein Hauptinstrument. Die Lap Steel Gitarre hat einen bizarren, berührungslosen Sound und ist sehr ausdrucksstark, mit all diesen biegsamen Mikrotönen. Sie hat von Haus aus einen völlig einzigartigen Sound, den ich sehr mag und der dazu beiträgt, dass der fertige Song noch einzigartiger klingt. Ich denke, es gibt schon genug Gitarren auf der Welt.

Du hast bereits in vielen anderen Bands gespielt und in den letzten Jahren  viel ausprobiert. Wie schaffst du es, dass das Spielen und Schreiben von Musik für dich interessant bleibt?

Ich habe, seit ich 16 war, mein ganzes Leben lang Musik gemacht. Mich hat nie die Inspiration durch die Welt um mich herum, die Menschen, die Musik und die Kunst verlassen. Die Musik hat mich schon früh gepackt und nie wieder losgelassen. Ich bin dankbar dafür, dass ich eine so starke Richtschnur in meinem Leben habe.

Wie unterscheidet sich die Arbeit an INSECT ARK von deiner vorherigen Band BEE AND FLOWER, die stilistisch ganz anders war?

Der Schreibprozess ist im Wesentlichen ähnlich – mein Instinkt hat mich immer geleitet. Ich fange damit an, mich darauf zu konzentrieren, wie es sich anfühlen soll, und mache mir später Gedanken darüber, wie ich es aufführen kann. Und ich mache mir keine allzu großen Gedanken darüber, ob ich mich live an die Albumversion halten muss. Ich mag es, dass man die Songs live neu interpretieren kann. Die Musik von INSECT ARK war immer dafür gedacht, live aufgeführt zu werden – zuerst von mir alleine, dann als Duo und jetzt als Trio – wir haben gerade ein drittes Mitglied für unsere Live-Shows hinzugefügt. Das ist ganz anders als bei BEE AND FLOWER, mit fünf oder sechs Leuten in der Band.

Die Songs von „Raw Blood Singing“ haben eine recht große Bandbreite, von Doomgaze wie „Youth Body Swayed“ und „The Hands“ bis hin zu experimentelleren Stücken wie „Cleaven Hearted“, „Psychological Jackal“ und „Inverted Whirlpool“. Es braucht all diese verschiedenen Elemente, um das Album abzurunden. War es schwierig, die Reihenfolge der Songs so zu arrangieren, dass ein rundes Gesamtbild entsteht?

Wir haben sorgfältig an der Reihenfolge des Albums gearbeitet – am Ende haben wir sie drastisch von unseren ersten Ideen abgewandelt, aber schlusse denken wir, dass sie einen dynamischen und energetischen Fluss hat. Die Idee war es, Spannung und Energie gut aufzubauen und freizusetzen.

“Wir machen uns beide gerne die Hände schmutzig und graben uns in viele Details ein, um alle kleinsten Ecken eines Songs, eines Riffs oder einer Melodie zu erforschen, wobei wir großen Wert auf Dynamik und Gefühl legen.” – Dana genießt die Zusammenarbeit mit ihrem neuen Drummer Tim Wyskida.

Ville Leppilahti von ORANSSI PAZUZU und WASTE OF SPACE ORCHESTRA hat euch bei 3 Songs unterstützt. Sein Beitrag sorgt für eine psychedelische Atmosphäre – ähnlich wie bei ORANSSI PAZUZU. War das eure Hoffnung, als ihr ihn eingeladen habt?

Ja, Ville hat einige wirklich wilde Synthies und erhabene und kraftvolle Pianos zu drei der Songs hinzugefügt. Ich hatte bereits einen Großteil der Synthesizer geschrieben, also kamen seine Parts zu meinen hinzu, aber er hat es geschafft, einen eigenen Raum zu finden. Was er beigesteuert hat, schimmert wirklich durch. Er hat einen ganz eigenen Stil, und ich bin ein großer Fan seines Spiels und seiner Bands.

Colin Marston hingegen bringt etwas mehr verträumte Atmosphäre in die Musik. Am Ende habe ich mich gefragt, warum er nicht schon früher als Gast dabei war. Dass er auf dem Album mitspielt, war ziemlich offensichtlich. Vielleicht eine Art Abschied, da er noch in den USA ist?

Colin hat bei einem Song, „Inverted Whirlpool“, etwa 30 Sekunden lang Synthesizer gespielt – er hatte eine coole Idee, um den Übergang zwischen zwei Abschnitten des Songs zu gestalten, und es war perfekt.  Kreativ gesehen mag es offensichtlich erscheinen, aber wir hatten nicht vor, neben Ville noch weitere Gäste zu haben.

„Raw Blood Singing“ ist ein Album, das Zeit braucht, um sich zu entfalten; es ist nicht leicht zu verdauen. Die Aufmerksamkeitsspanne der meisten Hörer ist sehr kurz – vielleicht zu kurz für eure intensive Art von Musik. Glaubst du an ein kleineres Publikum, das noch in die Musik eintaucht, anstatt ein Album (oder einen Song) nach dem anderen zu konsumieren?

Ich verbringe nicht viel Zeit damit, darüber nachzudenken, ob es Leuten gefällt, die Musik en masse konsumieren. Mir ist klar, dass es sich nicht um kommerzielle Musik handelt. Es ist interessant, dass einige Leute dieses Album für zugänglich halten und andere das Gegenteil davon, wie du schon gesagt hast. Beides ist in Ordnung, die Menschen sollen es so nehmen, wie sie wollen. Wir machen keine Musik, um uns an ein Publikum zu richten oder uns darüber Gedanken zu machen, wie diese konsumiert wird, wir nutzen unsere eigenen Instinkte für das, was wir für gut halten.

Wie hat sich das Musikgeschäft für dich seit dem Beginn deiner Karriere verändert? Jetzt haben die Leute sofortigen Zugang zu eurer Musik und können euch zum Beispiel über Bandcamp einfacher denn je unterstützen. Oder ist es komplizierter geworden, weil es überall so viele Bands gibt und es schwieriger ist, hervorzustechen?

Die Dinge haben sich drastisch verändert, und ich glaube nicht, dass die Barrierefreiheit für Musik mit Qualität gleichzusetzen ist. Die Technologie hat sich verändert und wird sich nicht zurückentwickeln, daher ist es nicht sehr hilfreich, sentimental darüber zu sein, wie die Dinge in der Vergangenheit funktioniert haben. Der digitale Austausch ist ein großer Vorteil, aber er bedeutet auch, dass es jetzt so viele Bands und Künstler gibt, sodass es schwer ist, sich einen Weg durch all das zu bahnen.

Als INSECT ARK in den USA ansässig waren, hattet ihr ein nordamerikanisches Label, jetzt seid ihr in Europa und arbeitet bei einem europäischen Label. Ist das ein Zufall?

Wir mögen DEBEMUR MORTI sehr – sie haben einige exzellente Bands und wir stehen voll hinter ihrem Engagement, mit einzigartiger Musik zu arbeiten, die „die Norm“ herausfordert. Sie veröffentlichen Musik, die sie lieben und an die sie glauben, und das ist so wichtig, die Leidenschaft. Dass unser Label seinen Sitz in Europa hat, macht natürlich Sinn. Aber wir haben auch gerne mit PROFOUND LORE zusammengearbeitet, die Musik von vielen großartigen Bands veröffentlichen und einen großartigen Job machen. Beide sind hervorragende Labels.

Es gibt weder bei PROFOUND LORE noch DEBEMUR MORTI viele Nicht-Metal-Bands. Genießt ihr es, auf einem Metal-Label stilistisch herauszustechen?

Heutzutage gibt es so viele Überschneidungen zwischen den verschiedenen Musikstilen; viele Metalheads mögen Nicht-Metal und umgekehrt. Die Labels verstehen diesen Crossover und wissen, dass Fans von abenteuerlicher Musik nicht auf einfache Genres beschränkt sind. Wir passen sowieso nicht in eine Kategorie, aber ich denke, die Unterscheidung, anders zu sein, ist eher ein Vorteil.

Das Artwork von Chris Friel ist sehr düster und faszinierend. Es hat etwas Archaisches, ich kann mich nicht entscheiden, ob es eine Küste oder einen nebligen Berg in Mordor zeigt. Aber ich bleibe an den Wurzeln im Boden hängen. Der Betrachter kann sich in dem Kunstwerk verlieren. Was denkst du über das Cover?

Chris Friel ist ein Meister des Geheimnisses und der Schatten, und seine Bilder sind sehr eindrucksvoll. Mir gefällt, dass man sie nicht wirklich physisch zuordnen kann. Das Cover ist eigentlich eine Kombination aus zweien seiner Bilder, die ich zusammengesetzt habe; die Wurzeln waren eigentlich Bäume auf einem anderen Foto. Ich liebe es, mit der Rekonstruktion von Bildern zu spielen, und mir gefiel die Idee, dass der unterirdische Teil einen seltenen Einblick in das gibt, was sich unter der Oberfläche abspielt und wächst. Es ist ein wenig wie eine Allegorie auf das Mysterium von dem, was außerhalb des Sichtfeldes, unter den Schatten des Äußeren geschieht.

Vier Jahre sind seit „The Vanishing“ vergangen – wird es weitere vier Jahre dauern, bis der Nachfolger von „Raw Blood Singing“ erscheint?

Höchst unwahrscheinlich. Der Grund für die Pause war, dass ich zwischen den Kontinenten umgezogen bin und noch einmal von vorne angefangen habe.

Als Mitglied von SWANS hast du einen sehr vollen Terminkalender. Wird es auch eine Tournee für INSECT ARK geben?

INSECT ARK werden auf jeden Fall auf Tour gehen, in Europa, den USA und Großbritannien. Wir freuen uns darauf, die Musik überall hin zu bringen. Live sind wir jetzt zu dritt, mit meinem Ex-Bandkollegen Lynn Wright an Lap Steel, Gitarre und den Backing Vocals; mit diesem Setup kann ich mich auf Bass und Gesang konzentrieren, und Tim spielt Schlagzeug und Elektronik. Früher spielten wir als Duo, und ich wechselte zwischen Bass und Lap Steel und machte viele Live-Loops. Diese technische Komplexität erlaubte es nicht, Gesang als weiteres Element hinzuzufügen. Jetzt sind wir in einer Position, in der wir einen viel größeren Spielraum haben, sich live darstellen lässt, und das ist eine sehr aufregende Entwicklung.

Hardcore aus New York: GEL stellen ihr kommendes Album “Persona” mit einer weiteren Singe vor und haben nun auch ein Video zum Titelsong “Persona” geteilt. Schon im Mai stellten die Band die erste Single “Mirrage” mit einem Clip bei YouTube vor.

Die komplette EP “Persona” erscheint am 16. August 2024. Im Juli geben GEL drei Clubkonzerte in Deutschland.

Imagine the Garden of Eden as the ultimate getaway from the hustle and bustle of life’s troubles, with Adam and Eve as the poster couple for perfect harmony. It’s a paradise where lovers find peace and freedom from daily concerns. But then, Eve takes a bite of that infamous apple, unlocking the knowledge of good and evil, and—poof!—they’re out of paradise. Ever since, humanity has been pining for that lost innocence, that pure connection, and the uncomplicated love that once was..

Now Frenchy and the Punk are taking a bite out of the Big Apple themselves, with their eighth album, Midnight Garden, released through NYC indie label EA Recordings. This album comes a year after their critically-acclaimed Zen Ghost. Bursting with dance grooves, upbeat guitar melodies, and soaring vocals, it’s a perfect kick-off for the summer season.

Formed in 2005, Frenchy and the Punk are Samantha Stephenson (Frenchy, naturally) on vocals and percussion, and Scott Helland (Deep Wound, Outpatients, Guitarmy of One) on guitar. They offer a lively mix of post-punk, dark folk, new wave, goth, and punk cabaret, making for a delightfully eclectic blend.

On Midnight Garden, Stephenson hits her stride – lyrically, vocally and with the synth sounds peppering the album. Helland shows his knack for infectious, and often euphoric, guitar melodies, propelling these tracks and perfectly complementing Frenchy’s vocals.

“Midnight Garden feels like a new beginning of sorts,” Stephenson muses. “Even though this is our eighth studio album, there’s a lot of rising from the ashes, or starting over energy in these songs. I had a sense of things coming to an end, a kind of clearing the air and moving forward with a renewed sense of clarity and purpose. I feel like I am fully engaged in this music process, more so than ever before. I’m giving it my all, whereas up until a couple of years ago, I was fighting internally with the push and pull of visual arts vs music. I’m ready to let go of the past, I’m ready for a new chapter.”

Opening with the euphoric title track, Midnight Garden offers a gothic re-imagining of the Garden of Eden, perfect for soulmates wanting to escape worldly woes. This is followed by the eerie howls of Skip Boom, an intense love song about powerful passion that could either spectacularly explode – or implode.

Then comes Hypnotized, a dance floor frenzy that dives into a state of relaxation and hypnotic surrender. The song’s message is all about letting go of misconceptions and crafting your own reality, emphasizing the power of the mind over matter and creating a delightful sense of floating and weightlessness.

Immortal follows the Siouxsie playbook of gothic psychedelia, featuring Frenchy’s powerful vocals. She explodes into the chorus with a furious tambourine, delivering a sound that’s both intense and a bit whimsical. It’s like a dark carnival ride where you can’t help but enjoy the wild, eerie atmosphere, even as it sends shivers down your spine.

‘Like In A Dream’ bathes the listener in its reflective, beautiful moodiness, piercing the gloom with flickers of light. It describes a surreal and dreamlike experience of floating in the sea, feeling both immersed and detached. This sense of being is trapped in a perpetual dream state, where everything feels ethereal and unreal, yet there is a yearning for something more tangible and meaningful.

Mr. Scorpion bemoans the skewed balance of power, envisioning a world free from outdated ideologies. The remaining tracks deliver guitar-driven dance grooves with soaring vocals. Sleepwalk Shuffle is a post-punk tune that humorously critiques the cultural direction we’re all stumbling along in as a society. Lighting Up The Sky puts Helland’s formidable guitar skills on the forefront, playing off the vocals with equal fury.

The album wraps up with End of An Era, a straightforward synth-driven track that leaves you with an ominous drone, perfectly capturing the vibe of our times. It’s like the musical equivalent of looking at your phone’s battery at 1%—you know something’s ending, and it’s got that eerie, inevitable feeling.

Frenchy and the Punk is vocalist, percussionist, and lyricist Samantha Stephenson and guitarist-composer Scott Helland (Outpatients, Deep Wound). Influenced by The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Blondie, Concrete Blonde, and The B52’s, the duo thrive in their trademark blend of post-punk and dark folk music…at times we also hear the anthemic likes of Florence and the Machine.

French-born, but raised in the UK and USA, Samantha Stephenson’s study of piano and dance ignited her eventual rejection of corporate conformity; fuelling a quest to lead a truly autonomous life through art and music. Frenchy doesn’t shy away from theatrics: her infectious vivacity, commanding dance moves and bellowing voice weave into a mesmerizing combination. Helland anchors her with his skillful guitar work, a wonderful alchemy of complimentary energies.

A son of jazz-loving teachers, Scott Helland grew up in Western Massachusetts and was a vital player on the region’s fertile early hardcore punk scene, including time playing in Deep Wound, along with Dinosaur Jr. founders J Mascis and Lou Barlow.

Helland and Stephenson met in NYC in 1998, when Stephenson spontaneously jumped on stage to accompany Helland during his solo guitar performance. The artistic union was immediate, powerful and undeniable – and so is their personal union. The pair began to tour with fevered zeal, turning heads with their striking aesthetic, steadily building fervent fans on the mystical-folk/steampunk festival, coffeehouse, convention, and club circuits with their boisterous, revival-like live shows.

The duo has forged their own distinct path, touring the US and Europe with their artful two-person powerhouse of sound. To date, they’ve performed with Dead Can Dance’s Peter Ulrich and Dresden Dolls’ Brian Viglione, Thomas Dolby, Dinosaur Jr., The World Inferno Friendship Society, Rasputina, Cruxshadows, Aurelio Voltaire and Faun.‘Lost In A Dream’ is available everywhere, including Apple Music, Spotify and Bandcamp.

On June 28, the ‘Midnight Garden’ album, now available to order, will be released on vinyl, CD and digitally.  After a successful UK tour, the band kicks off their American tour on June 22.
