Die Alternative / Progressive Rock-Band PURE REASON REVOLUTION veröffentlicht am 6. September 2024 ihr neues Album “Coming Up To Consciousness” via InsideOut Music. Darauf verarbeitet Sänger Jon Courtney einen persönlichen Verlust, wie er erklärt:

“Nach dem Verlust meines Hundes folgte eine kreative Durststrecke, aber nach einem Treffen mit meinem Songwritingfreund Craig Walker (Archive/Power of Dreams) und dem Austausch über die letzten Monate drängte er mich, diese Erfahrung in Texten und Musik zu verarbeiten. Plötzlich flog das Album aus mir/uns heraus! Was den Aufnahmeprozess angeht, so war dieses Album wahrscheinlich das angenehmste, da die verschiedenen Kollaborationen die Kreativität befeuerten.”

Einen Einblick in das Werk gewährt jetzt das Video zum Stück “Useless Animal” bei YouTube. Die erste Single “Dig Till You Die” gibt es ebenfalls als Clip bei YouTube.

Die Progressive Metalcore-Band ALLT präsentiert ihre neue Single “Aquila” als Videoclip. Die Nummer stammt wie das Musikvideo “Remnant” vom kommenden Debütalbum “From The New World”. “Remnant” kommentiert das Quintett wie folgt:

“‘Remnant’ ist ein sehr persönlicher und thematischer Track, selbst für unsere Verhältnisse. Er markiert den Beginn einer neuen Geschichte, die wir gerne enthüllen möchten. Als wir diesen Song schrieben, wollten wir die Essenz von Radioaktivität und außerweltlichen Kräften einfangen. Der Track ist zutiefst menschlich und hat doch eine unverkennbar fremdartige Qualität. Er ist ebenso melancholisch wie schwer – eine Geschichte über menschliche Schwäche und Überleben.”

Auch die vorherige Single “The Orphan Breed” gibt es in Bild und Ton bei YouTube. Das Stück folgt auf den Track “Emanate”, den die Formation Anfang 2023 mit einem Video vorstellte. Es handelte sich dabei zugleich um den ersten Track unter dem neuen Label Century Media – erst Ende 2022 hatte man einen Vertrag beim Label unterzeichnet.

Alle Stücke sind Teil des Albums “From The New World”, das zehn Songs enthält und am 4. Oktober 2024 via Century Media auf CD, Vinyl sowie digital erscheinen wird.

Die Death Metal-Band PERFIDIOUS hat einen Labeldeal bei Time To Kill Records unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen werden die Italiener ihr neues Album “Savouring His Flesh” veröffentlichen. Die Sludge / Doom Metal-Band EARTH SHIP hat mit einem Video zu “Bereft” einen weiteren Song ihres kommenden Albums “Soar” veröffentlicht. Es ist das sechste Album der aus Berlin stammenden Band, deren Grundgerüst das Ehepaar Jan und Sabine Oberg (jeweils GRIN, SLOWSHINE) bildet. Als Drummer stand diesmal André Klein (SLOWSHINE) zur Verfügung.

Mit “Ghost Town” veröffentlichten EARTH SHIP im Juni eine erste Single von “Soar”.

“Soar” wurde erneut von Gitarrist und Sänger Jan Oberg in dessen Hidden Planet Studio produziert und wird am 9. August 2024 via The Lasting Dose Records erscheinen. Das Cover-Artwork stammt von Benedikt Demmer.

WRITTEN BY WOLVES stimmen auf ihr neues Studioalbum “The Lighthouse” ein: Erschienen ist selbiges am 26. Juli 2024, ein Video zum Titeltrack kann man nun bei YouTube ansehen.

Auch einen Clip zur Auskopplung “Please, Just Breathe” gibt es in Bild un Ton. Zuvor teilten die Neuseeländer bereits die Video-Single “Burn”.

“The Lighthouse” liegt ein Konzept zugrunde: Es drehe sich um das Konzept von “Zuhause” – ein Ort, an dem man sich geborgen fühle, auch um dunklen mentalen Momenten zu entkommen. Produziert wurde die Platte von Gladius James.

Die Rock-Band hat außerdem im Oktober 2023 ein Video zu “Goddess” bei YouTube geteilt.

After years of releasing only singles, the darkwave project Deus Ex Lumina present its first full album “As Above So Below” on Cold Transmission Music. The album holds 18 tracks including re-mastered versions of some the singles combined with new tracks.

Hailing from the shadows of Berlin but with roots in Buenos Aires, Deus Ex Lumina is the solo-project of Del Darkwave, a graduated music producer and former post-punk drummer. Deus Ex Lumina was launched in 2020 as his primary solo venture.

The album is out now on vinyl, CD and in digital format.

Das Team vom HEADBANGERS OPEN AIR hatte die Running Order für das Gartenfest veröffentlicht inklusive der Meet & Greet-Zeiten. Die Running Order wurde etwas angepasst. Der Gig von ARKHAM WITCH wurde auf Wunsch einiger Besucher später gelegt, die Engländer spielen jetzt am Freitag um 16:40. Der dort geplante Gig von IRON CURTAIN wurde für Samstag an den Anfang gesetzt, sie spielen bereits um 10:45.

Einige Änderungen gab es zuvor noch im Billing. Beim WarmUp am Mittwoch hatten WITCHSLAYER ihre Show abgesagt, die Tour ist ausgefallen. Hier sprangen die dänischen Power-Metaller MANTICORA ein.

Die Show von SCREAMER wurde auf 2025 verschoben, Gitarrist Dejan hat sich einen Bandscheibenvorfall zugezogen. Krya på dig! Die irischen Thrasher GAMA BOMB haben dafür am Donnerstag gespielt.

Antler Family sprang to life in 2017, a potent mix of Mia Dean (Blood Moon Wedding), Tom Flynn (Fang, Duh, Tapeworm, Melvins), Tom Dean (Blood Moon Wedding, Code of the West), and the infamous Stark Raving Brad (Hellbillies, The Freak Accident). The Oakland quartet churns out dissonant goth noise punk and pagan waltz metal, slathered with sludgy guitar riffs and heavy synth drones. Dark murder-folk whispers and slumberous sea shanties sneak in, twisting standard song formats into something unexpected. Those who dig Swans, Jucifer, Melvins, Big Brave, and Chelsea Wolfe will find kindred spirits here.

Bring Me Back My Love lingers in the longing for lost love, with each heartbeat and breath echoing that emptiness. The singer searches for a connection, feeling a phantom presence and prowling through shadows and hidden paths. The heart’s steady throb underscores the plea to reclaim their love, painting a portrait of deep yearning and haunting loss, a ballad of desperation and desire, wrapped in shadows and whispered secrets. The repeated refrain, a plea to bring back their love, thrums with raw emotion, sketching a stark silhouette of sorrow and longing in the dim light of forgotten memories.

The video for Bring Me Back My Love was directed and edited by the multifaceted Mia Dean, Antler Family’s front-woman, with cinematography by her frequent cohort, Ehret Fieldhouse. The video dances on dual timelines: one showcasing the band’s raw performance, the other plunging into a twisted, otherworldly reality. Here, actor Bea Sandri, our tormented Antler Maiden, wanders through the woods, her anguish palpable. It’s a haunting blend of stark performance and surreal storytelling, a visual venture that grips the viewer in a dual grip of stark reality and unsettling fantasy, mirroring the band’s own dissonant and eerie essence.

“I met Bea Sandri in Film School and was impressed with the way she expressed herself,” says Mia Dean. “She is young, but really into 90’s esthetics, and Kurt Cobain, which suits our kind of grunge, nostalgia vibe. It was great fun to direct her in our music video, and to use physical theater as a way explore the dark mysterious themes in Bring Me Back My Love.”

Antler Family’s debut album was birthed in Oakland, CA, at Earhammer Studios, with Grammy-winning Greg Wilkinson (High On Fire) at the helm. Their melodic vocals soar over a massive wall of sound, recorded by Wilkinson and mastered by Justin Weis at Trakworx in South San Francisco. Delayed for years by a worldwide wave of physical and mental maladies, the album finally saw the light of day in January 2024, released on Boner Records. It’s a testament to their tenacity, a thunderous blend of grit and grandeur forged in the heart of the Bay Area.

Tom Flynn, one of the most influential guitar players to ever come out of the San Francisco punk scene, founded the San Francisco independent record label, Boner Records in the early 80’s, which has released many notable San Francisco and East Bay punk records, and launched The Melvins into fame. Mia Dean is known internationally for her critically acclaimed album Blood Moon Wedding with anarcho-post-punk legend, Steve Lak (Zounds).

The cover art hails from the public domain, drawn from the famous ‘Midnight Series’ of deer at night. Captured in the late 1800s by George Shiras III, the man Hemingway called “the most interesting man I know,” it’s a glimpse into the dawn of wildlife photography. Shiras, the silent stalker, would drift in a canoe under the cloak of darkness, his camera poised at the prow. Listening intently, he’d snap a shot at any rustle or movement. The flash would explode, sending deer scattering, but the moment, frozen in time, was already his.

Out today is “Between Trees”, the newest single from Heiko Maile + Julian Demarre. The single is out on Bureau B and acts as a teaser for the album “Neostalgia” which will be in stores on September 6th. It’s the follow-up to the earlier released “Reflection (Dark Horses)”.

The band explains the single as follows: “Who doesn’t know the feeling? A certain place you fondly remember, perhaps even long to return to. Memories of a cherished spot that you once discovered, where you could linger and ponder, free from the distraction of everyday noise and commotion. A sanctuary you can recall in detail even after many years.

For us, such a place is a forest clearing, being surrounded by trees with the wind softly rustling through them, the ground covered with knee-high soft grass, evoking a sense of space and calm, far away from the constant noise of our cities. This was the image that repeatedly came to mind while we were creating the music for this track.”

Heiko Maile, born on January 12, 1966, in Sydney, Australia, is a German musician and composer best known for his role in the synth-pop band Camouflage. He grew up in Bietigheim-Bissingen and began his musical journey with classical guitar lessons at a young age. In 1983, Maile co-founded Camouflage, which gained popularity with hits like “The Great Commandment” and “Love Is a Shield”​.

Apart from his work with Camouflage, Maile has made contributions to film music. He composed scores for notable films such as “The Wave” and “We Are the Night”, receiving the Deutscher Fernsehpreis for best music in 2017. He also worked on the soundtrack for the “The Crocodiles” film series​.

Die Avant Doom / Punk-Band MANIC ABRAXAS hat mit “TranscendX” einen dritten Track ihres kommenden Albums “Skinformation” veröffentlicht. Wenige Wochen zuvor ist der Titeltrack vom Album erschienen.

“”Skinformation” ist die klangliche Darstellung einer Welt, in der die Grenzen zwischen Geist und Körper verschwimmen, wie in einem Philip K. Dick-Roman, der zum Leben erwacht”, sagt Sänger Dallas Seger. “Dieser Song ist eine dunkle, düstere Erkundung der Schnittstelle zwischen menschlicher Verbindung und technologischer Manipulation, wo das Virtuelle und das Reale wie ein fehlerhafter Großrechner verschwimmen. “Skinformation”, das von Steve Austin (TODAY IS THE DAY) produziert wurde, taucht dabei in die dunkle Unterwelt einer düsteren Cyberpunk-Bienenstockwelt ein. In dieser unbarmherzigen Landschaft streifen Datenhändler, gesichtslose Attentäter und techno-sexuelle Freaks frei umher, wo Informationen die ultimative Währung sind. Die Black Metal-Band KREYL hat mit “Obscure Rise of Ancient Eulogy” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist das erste Album der 2020 von Miguel “Virus Tremor” Vidal (HANDLE WITH HATE) gegründeten Band aus Barcelona, die sich mehr auf historisch-kulturelle Themen konzentriert, die eng mit dem Konzept des Todes, des Okkultismus und der alten Zivilisationen verbunden sind.

“Obscure Rise of Ancient Eulogy” wurde mit einem Cover-Artwork von Lordigan Pedro Sena ausgestattet und wird am 18. Oktober 2024 via Inverse Records erscheinen. Vorab gibt es mit “Medusa’s Death” ein Lyric-Video.

“Das Lied „Medusa’s Death“ basiert auf dem Mythos von Perseus und Medusa. Medusa ist eine der drei Gorgonen, die oft mit dem Tod, mit Angst assoziiert wird. In dem Lied wird der Moment vor ihrem Tod durch Perseus auf blutige und grausame Weise beschrieben. Dieser Mythos wurde bewusst gewählt, weil sie das Grauen repräsentiert, die andere Seite der Schönheit, die fasziniert und abstößt, verführt und tötet. Der weibliche Blick, normalerweise eine Quelle der Verführung, wird in Medusa zu einer Quelle des sofortigen Todes, die jeden, der sie ansieht, in festen Stein verwandelt”, erklärt die Band.

The Spanish Electro-Pop band After The Rain has been active for several years. Although it took them some time to release a new album, they kept their fans engaged with several EPs in the interim. The duo stays true to their familiar sound, blending harder-hitting tracks with sweeter, more melodic pieces. I particularly enjoy the melodic sequences, especially in the heavier songs. However, I feel the vocal production could be improved. Overall, the album is enjoyable, even if it doesn’t revolutionize the genre. (Rate:7).

The “Age of Loneliness” slinks in, shadows lengthening – despite our digital dazzle. Social media and remote work, while spinning webs worldwide, spawn shallow ties and scant face-to-face. Urban sprawl splinters close-knit communities, and the old guard grows gloomier. Mental maladies, stigma, and digital deluge deepen the detachment. The cult of the self further frays social fabric. Yet, glimmers of hope flicker in community crusades, better mental health havens, and clever tech tricks aiming to kindle real connections. It’s a fight against the fog, a bid to bind the frayed edges and stand against the stark, solitary silence.

This is the very heart of the new offering from Vamberator, comprised of Jemaur Tayle (Shelleyan Orphan) and The Cure’s former drummer Boris Williams. The band is, in their words, “a magical funky hybrid; a frisky colt on a journey to find a meaning in this age of loneliness….This is Vamberator, growing in the shade, where the most interesting plants grow: an emotional being; a sensitive flower; the animal serenader; a rebellious beast!”

Sleep the Giant of Sleeps, the debut single from the upcoming album Age of Loneliness (Unifaun Productions), boasts the bass prowess of regular collaborator Charlie Jones (Goldfrapp, The Cult). It’s a glorious fusion of psychedelia, Lee Hazlewood pathos, spaghetti western twang, oddball electronic accents, banjo twangs, and chamber pop whispers. Strings sweep in, ghostly synths hover, and haunting vocals drift through the mix. This single is a strange symphony, where the bizarre and the beautiful dance in a delicate, delightful balance.

“Chasing trains, chasing dogs, chasing dreams, they always get away,” Tayle muses on the song’s theme. “Pushing your way through that froth on a daydream, sharing the gloom with ghouls and procrastinating – it’s all part of the daily merry-go-round. But there is always an unseen presence that comes to the rescue, sometimes in dreams, sometimes in the middle of the night as you cool yourself in front of that open fridge. It’s relentless though, and here it comes again, but there’s so much to do, but close your eyes and there she is again.”

Sleep the Giant of sleeps by Vamberator

“The monster says, ‘Come into my garden, love’, and we find ourselves trawling through the streets of New York, inhabiting the mind of Lou Reed, being pursued by a creature that refuses to go away.  Is it all in the mind?  And why won’t it cut ‘the long tall grass’?  Will we ever know?” 

Shelleyan Orphan spun a spell of ethereal chamber pop. Caroline Crawley and Jemaur Tayle drew from Romantic poets and diverse melodies, crafting their 1987 debut, Helleborine, which won acclaim for its lush layers, haunting harmonies, and poetic whispers. After a pause, Crawley pursued fresh frontiers with This Mortal Coil and birthed Babacar. The band bounded back in the mid-2000s, releasing We Have Everything We Need in 2008, rekindling their organic roots.

Boris Williams, Caroline Crawley’s longtime partner and a drumming dynamo, made his mark playing with Thompson Twins and Kim Wilde. He joined The Cure in 1984. Williams’s potent percussion propelled the band’s sound, leaving an indelible imprint on acclaimed albums like The Head on the Door, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Disintegration, and Wish. His bold and brilliant beats became the backbone of The Cure’s signature style.

Caroline Crawley tragically passed after a lengthy illness in 2016. In the aftermath of her death, Tayle plucked out the heart of Shelleyan Orphan and joined forces with Boris Williams on Vamberator.

“After Caroline’s passing, I had been offered the chance to make a solo album,” says Tayle. “I had been writing on and off without a focus and not having someone to bounce off was new to me. Boris is family, and we have played together with Shelleyan Orphan live and in the studio on and off for years, so it felt very natural for us to work on this together. I am extremely fortunate to have a drummer of his calibre pounding out the rhythms on this album.”

Robert Henri’s The Art Spirit has long served as a manifesto for living the life of an artist. Henri, an influential painter and teacher, believed that art is not just a practice but a way of life, a means to see the world with fresh eyes. Henri advocated for authenticity, urging artists to seek their unique voice rather than imitate others. He spoke of the importance of daily discipline, but also of spontaneity and joy in creation. His words are a blend of wisdom and wit, stressing that failures are as crucial as successes, each brushstroke a lesson in itself. David Lynch has also thrown his hat into the ring with Catching The Big Fish, taking Henri’s advice and embellishing it with his own wisdom.

This is all well and fine on paper, but the realities of living hand to mouth as a working artist with no other income is increasingly suffocating in today’s society. Henri and Lynch, while beloved for their gifts to the world, did not come up as artists in a world of generative AI, nor as youths did they have to contend with a million invasive social media distractions 24/7, Sisyphean competition, or corporate thievery from social media platforms.

Artists have always had to adapt to survive in uncertainty; forever frolicking on the edge of an abyss; caught in the swirling currents of an unforgiving climate – the playing field has merely shifted into an entirely different monster. And yet, despite the pitfalls, the Art Spirit cannot be crushed, or tamed, or squashed.

Dreamers at heart, all artists delight in the chaotic choreography of creation, reaching for stars just out of grasp, knowing the very act may be their undoing. The painter’s passionate brushstrokes; the poet’s plucking of guitar strings – both sing of sorrow and joy. In the perpetual pursuit of the unattainable, their essence is illuminated. They laugh at the absurdity, finding humour in their hopeful hopelessness.

Bara Hari and genCAB team up on There Goes That Dream, which dives deep into the murky waters of being indie artists in a tough-as-nails world. These stubborn stars chase the horizon, knowing they might go under before they ever get there.

Despite the gloom, they find a strange beauty in the struggle. The joy of creating, the thrill of the chase, it’s all part of the package. Sure, the odds are stacked, and the climate’s colder than a grifter’s handshake, but they soldier on.

There Goes That Dream is a gritty ode to the Art Spirit—full of sharp wit and soft whispers – a testament to their tenacity. They might not have hit the big time (yet), but they keep at it, because the journey, with all its twists and turns, is where the real story lies.

Based in Los Angeles, BARA HARI is the dark pop alter ego of multi-disciplinary artist Sam Franco.  Bara Hari eschews conventional boundaries in a triumph of genre defiance, melding dark pop-rock and trip-hop with her unique sophistication. Armed with a kaleidoscopic array of influences, Bara Hari effortlessly threads through the diverse territories of dark pop, synth-pop, industrial pop, electro-pop, darkwave, and goth. Her expansive scope is a striking testament to her uncanny ability to absorb and synthesize myriad musical textures and hues.

Adopting a stage name that is an ingenious confluence of two early 20th-century trailblazers, Theda Bara and Mata Hari, the artist pays homage to these women, both celebrated for their electrifying presence in the performing arts. The latter, Mata Hari, bore the additional intrigue of her alleged role as a World War I spy.

genCAB is the sharp synthpop brainchild of Philadelphia-based artist David Dutton. After releasing II transMuter in 2008, David Dutton was hard at work on a sophomore album when disaster struck—a hard drive crash erased all his efforts. Defeated and disheartened, Dutton distanced himself from industrial music, retreating into a creative silence for much of the next decade.

However, the move from New Jersey to Philadelphia sparked a resurgence. From this new beginning came the album Thoughts Beyond Words,showing that even when the flames of failure seem insurmountable, the spirit of creativity can rise again, stronger and more determined than ever. GENCAB’s journey is a reminder that sometimes, you have to lose everything to find a new path forward.

In 1986, alternative rock titans Pixies erupted from the fertile underground of Boston’s music scene, formed by two college friends with a shared talent for conjuring edgy and dynamic soundscapes. Founding members Guitarist Joey Santiago, and songwriter Black Francis (Charles Michael Kittridge Thompson IV) first crossed paths in the dorm rooms of the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The original lineup was rounded out by the steady bass and vocals of Kim Deal and the rhythmic backbone of David Lovering. The result birthed a sound as sharp as a switchblade, with the band’s early tracks laying the groundwork for the ’90s alternative rock revolution.

By ’93, the Pixies had disbanded in a dramatic fashion akin to a soap opera, only to make a raw, powerful return in 2004 with Paz Lenchantin stepping into Deal’s role. Fast forward to today, and the Pixies are back again, now featuring Emma Richardson of Band of Skulls fame on bass, injecting fresh life into their legendary sound.

Today, Pixies have announced their forthcoming new album, The Night the Zombies Came, which will be released on October 25 via BMG. Accompanying this announcement is their new single, “Chicken,” a plodding, dirge-like track that explores themes of helplessness and confusion. The lyrics liken the song’s protagonist to a chicken, aimlessly pecking, only to meet a sudden, violent end. The desperation in the vocals is palpable, painting a bleak yet honest picture of the human condition.

The slow, bluesy groove of “Chicken” feels like a lost David Lynch number with a touch of late Beatles magic—a divergence from their usual sound, yet unmistakably Pixies. The track retains their signature elements: unexpected key changes, raw emotion, and a hint of the surreal, woven seamlessly into a new musical fabric. This fresh twist reaffirms that even the most established acts can still surprise, adding another layer to their rich repertoire.

Pixies have reunited with producer Tom Dalgety, known for his work on their previous albums Head Carrier, Beneath the Eyrie, and Doggerel. Es gibt Nächte, in denen die rot glühende Sonne wie in Zeitlupe untergeht und den orangefarbene Himmel wie eine Verheißung anmutet. Wenn die schwere Luft steht, am Rande der Dunkelheit, dann vermischt sich Traum mit Realität. In den Betten wird gewälzt, auf der Suche nach etwas Kühle, während es mit der Erotik nicht so weit her ist. Und doch gibt es um die Zeit von Canis Major eine Sinnlichkeit die lockt, mit Eros in Lauerstellung. All das gießen IRESS in ihr Album „Sleep Now, In Reverse“. Die kalifornische Doomgaze-Band hat schon auf ihrer letztjährigen EP „Solace“ eine gute Figur gemacht, also was soll an dem dritten Album der Band schiefgehen?

Michelle Malleys entwaffnende Stimme steht im Zentrum der Musik: „Sleep Now, In Reverse“ lässt hin und wieder vergessen, dass IRESS eine volle Band ist.
IRESS liegen mit ihren sinnlich-atmosphärischen Songs irgendwo zwischen KING WOMAN und HOLY FAWN, mit einem Hauch „White Pony“-DEFTONES und SLOWDIVE. Ganz klar, hier gibt es große Gefühle, und das, obwohl sich IRESS in Sachen Pathos zurückhalten. Sängerin Michelle Malley muss mit ihrer gehauchten, rauchigen Stimme ihre Lyrics nur hinaussingen und schon mit dem Opener „Falling“ mag man ihr verfallen. Bei dieser Stimme gerät die Band fast in Vergessenheit, doch Gitarrist Graham Walker, der mal wavige und mal breitwandige Riffs spielt, mal subtile Melodien aus sich fließen lässt und hin und wieder nur kleine Akzente setzt, kreiert zusammen mit der Rhythmuseinheit die Basis der Songs.

Auch wenn „Sleep Now, In Reverse“ zehn Songs lang vor sich hin schwelgt, unterscheiden sich die einzelnen Stücke voneinander. Da gibt es die nahezu metallische, bisweilen dramatische Heaviness in „The Remains“ und „Knell Mara“, die der Band etwas weniger gut steht als die schwebende Melancholie von „Leviathan (The Fog)“ uns „In Reverse“. Und doch funktionieren beide Pole von IRESS, gerade wenn sie wie in „Ever Under“ und „The Remains aufeinander treffen. So schafft die Formation es, dass „Sleep Now, In Reverse“ in sich geschlossen klingt und subtil abwechslungsreich ist. IRESS funktionieren als Quartett, setzen keine großen Soundeffekte ein, jedes der Bandmitglieder hat im Soundbild seinen Platz. Und genau hier ist die Erfahrung der seit 2010 aktiven Band spürbar.

IRESS balancieren zwischen Verträumtheit und Heaviness: „Sleep Now, In Reverse“ ist gerade dann am besten, wenn beide Pole verbunden werden.
„Sleep Now, In Reverse“ ist gleichermaßen heavy und gefühlvoll, kann aber nicht immer zupacken. Zwischendurch gibt es da einige Momente, in denen sich die Musik ein wenig zieht, hin und wieder wirken die Instrumentalisten zudem etwas unterspannt – siehe „Mercy“ – und könnten etwas zwingender agieren. Und doch klimaxen IRESS mit dem unfassbar schönen „Sanctuary“, das sich zu einem kleinen Epos mausert und das Album sehr versöhnlich enden lässt. Am Ende der 50 Minuten ist von Abkühlung keine Spur – durch IRESS fühlt sich die Nacht noch etwas schwüler an. Der Soundtrack zur Sommerromanze? Bestimmt. Ob aus dieser Affäre eine Langzeitbeziehung wird? Die Chancen stehen nicht schlecht.

Scene: the curtain rises on the new kid in school; the greenhorn in the jungle of urban decay. This tenderfoot saunters into the scene, bringing a whiff of change, a glimmer of hope for the restless souls already entrenched in the battle. A rebellious rabble-rouser with youth’s fervour, spitting in the eye of adulthood’s mundane expectations.

The spirit of youth, untamed and relentless, kicks against the pricks, dodging the snares set by power-hungry parasites. They grip their ideals like a lifeline, determined to stave off the poisons seeping from the greed-soaked fingers of those who’d bleed the world dry. This new blood, this fresh face in a land of weary warriors, isn’t here to play nice.

No, this kid’s here to rewrite the rules, to dance on the graves of worn-out conventions with a wink and a smile. Lighthearted but fierce, they turn the tide, a gust of wind rattling the stagnant air, stirring the embers of defiance into a roaring blaze. And so, the stage is set, the players ready, with the fresh-faced fighter leading the charge against the encroaching darkness. End scene.

This little vignette is the subject of birthday boy Thurston Moore’s latest offering, New In Town, from his forthcoming album Flow Critical Lucidity.

“The song is about fresh blood,” Moore says. “The new kid in school. The new kid on the scene. A new potential for change in an already active community hoping to protect the world from the poisons of power-hungry creeps. The spirit of youth demonstrated in the early ’80s slam pits of hardcore refusing the worn-out expectations of adulthood.”

Discard any daydreams of what this theme would sound like – most would expect New In Town to be a lurching punk-tinged tune, or something more in the vein of Gang of Four. Instead, he throws a mighty curveball. The hypnotic tabla backbeat slithers in, sketching a scene for a pensive, shimmering atonal atmosphere.

Moore sing-songs his way through the lyrics, spinning a slick serenade. This, indeed, is the ideal blend Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson might have brewed, had they joined forces with Ravi Shankar. It’s a symphony of strangeness, where rhythms ripple like whispers in a twilight alley, and melodies meander like shadows on a moonlit boulevard. The result is a tantalizing tango between East and West, tradition and innovation.

Thurston Moore has a series of live dates, DJ sets, and signings scheduled for the rest of 2024. He will start with a DJ set and live performance with Devon Ross at Rough Trade East in London on July 24. On August 8, Moore’s band will perform at the Way Out West Festival in Gothenburg, Sweden. Returning to London on September 22, Moore will host a live performance and album launch party, along with a signing session at Rough Trade East. On October 1, Moore will collaborate with Hamid Drake for a duo performance at Bozar in Brussels, Belgium. In November, he will participate in a ‘Sonic Life’ Q&A at the Miami Book Fair in Florida. The tour will conclude with Moore curating a series of events from December 4-7 at The Stone in New York City.

Death by Gong, a newly minted collaboration featuring Jobst M. Feit (Radare), Peter Voigtmann (SHRVL, ex-The Ocean), and Chris Breuer (Zahn, Heads), have unleashed their latest single, “Troy Toy,” a track that seeps into your consciousness like a persistent fog. This piece is a masterful amalgamation of post-punk revival and indie rock, cloaked in an air of somber detachment and melancholy that’s as palpable as it is haunting. The relentless pulse of the guitar, paired with reverbed drums, crafts an atmospheric labyrinth of introspection.

The song unfurls a tale of fatigue and disillusionment with social façades, critiquing the superficiality and hypocrisy inherent in such environments. It’s an artful indictment of the exhausting charade of maintaining appearances amidst an uncontrollable social flow. The vocals waver with a nostalgic vulnerability, reminiscent of the wistful tones found in The Beatles’ “Across the Universe” and the pensive strains of Kurt Cobain’s “All Apologies.” The result is a song that lingers like a love letter lost to time—haunting, yet undeniably mesmerizing.

Troy Toy spins the tale of someone teetering on the edge of a panic attack at a soirée that is positively brimming with pretense and hypocrisy. It critiques superficiality and blame-shifting, highlighting the artificiality and coldness of people. They describe the exhaustion from maintaining appearances and the uncontrollable flow of social dynamics. The song warns against confusing persistence with fate and the belief in self-made luck, suggesting inevitable failure. It underscores the fragile balance of emotions and the pervasive malice among individuals.

Starting with introverted vocals and sparse guitars, Troy Toy escalates to a furious finale with droning synthesizers, capturing the essence of social anxiety and façades. Fans of The Notwist, NIN, Autolux, and King Krule will appreciate this portrayal of inner chaos and the explosive release of bottled-up emotions.

The music video is a cosmic journey, a solitary trek through the stars—as if Major Tom himself is watching the jetsam of space debris floating past him in his tin can. The visuals are surreal and contemplative, perfectly complementing the song’s ethereal vibe.

“I was initially unsure about the song being on the album because it sounds so different, but everyone else was totally convinced,” says Feit. “Now I am really happy that we picked it as the opening track. It acts like a gateway into the album, as it sounds so soft and innocent meanwhile being very dystopian on the lyrical level….It was exciting to find the right visual world for the song’s story together with our director Nicolai Hildebrandt, and in my mind, both elements form such a strong connection that it feels like the images have always been there. I really encourage you to read the lyrics while watching the video.”

Death by Gong’s forthcoming album Descalator is a friction-fueled fusion of the monumental heft of Failure and Torche with the delicate vocal stylings and songwriting finesse of Elliott Smith. Swirling shoegaze guitars reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine or DIIV interlace with synthetic textures that would make Portishead’s Geoff Barrow proud. This track delves deep into the human condition, touching on themes of decline and emotional turmoil with a touch both heavy and poetic.
