Bernard Sumner, reflecting on New Order’s unconventional journey, once remarked, “If you do it the way everyone else does it, you might have more success. But it’ll be a short burn, whereas with the way New Order did it, it made us more interesting. But it wasn’t intentional, though; we just did what we wanted to do and didn’t really listen to anyone.” That ethos has certainly shaped New Order’s legacy — a defiant, sometimes chaotic dance along the edges of post-punk’s decay and electronic music’s rise, where art and accident often intersect.

Now, nearly four decades on, it’s time to cast another long look back. Warner Music is preparing to drop a deluxe reissue of Brotherhood, one of New Order’s pivotal albums. Set for release on November 22, this limited edition will come in a lavish 2CD, 2DVD, and 1LP format, making it the fourth installment in their ongoing Definitive boxed set series. Following the highly regarded reissues of Movement (2019), Power, Corruption & Lies (2020), and Low-Life (2023), Brotherhood promises to delve even deeper into the vaults, offering fans a chance to revisit a moment where New Order’s penchant for straddling disparate worlds was at its peak.



Released in September 1986, Brotherhood soared to No. 9 on the UK Albums Chart and showcased the band’s ability to balance contrasting styles. The album was split into two distinct halves: the first, more post-punk-driven, with its raw energy and melancholic tones, and the second, a forward-thinking exploration into electronic dance music, featuring one of their most iconic synth-pop hits, “Bizarre Love Triangle.” The forthcoming reissue doesn’t just give the album a fresh remastering; it also packs in a trove of previously unheard demos and tracks, recorded during a 1985 session in Japan. The real draw, however, might be the 2DVD set, which includes long-buried live performances from Brixton Academy (1987), G-Mex Manchester (1986), Glastonbury, and a smattering of TV appearances across the UK and Europe. This is the band as they were meant to be experienced — raw, unfiltered, and on the brink of implosion.

To round out the release, there are also new editions of the 12” singles Bizarre Love Triangle, State Of The Nation, and Touched By The Hand Of God, each accompanied by their elusive B-sides. It’s a treasure trove for the devoted and the curious alike, a rare chance to delve into the seismic shifts and off-kilter melodies that defined a band as elusive as their sound.

For those itching for even more, Season 2 of Transmissions: The Definitive Story of Joy Division & New Order has been announced, promising new and exclusive interviews with band members Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris, Gillian Gilbert, and Peter Hook, alongside special guests like Johnny Marr, Billy Corgan, and Neil Tennant. Narrated by BBC Radio’s Elizabeth Alker, this season captures the band in the wake of the surprise global success of Blue Monday, navigating a bizarre new world where Quincy Jones is banging on their door, and John Hughes is begging for soundtrack contributions.

“America had never heard of Joy Division,” reflects drummer Stephen Morris. “In England and Europe, you’d get people expecting Love Will Tear Us Apart. In America, they approached us with an open mind, which justified our bloody-mindedness in not being Joy Division…”

The spirit of New Order has always been a refusal to conform, a determination to chart a singular course no matter the consequences. With the release of Brotherhood‘s Definitive Edition, they once again invite listeners to step into their curious world — one foot in the warehouse, the other in the indie disco, forever caught between two worlds, and reveling in the dissonance.

Der erste Nornengesang im Jahr 2022 war nun nicht gerade das, was dem Erbe eines Tomas Liljedahl gerecht wäre. „Star Is Way, Way Is Eye“ war weder so gelungen wie „Feast On Your Gone“, das einzige Album von THE OLD WIND und konnte es schon gar nicht mit der Diskografie der legendären BREACH aufnehmen. Denn NORNA haben ein ähnliches Problem, wie viele Sludge-Bands der neueren Generation: Es geht ihnen rein um akustische Intensität, einfach Heaviness um der Heaviness willen, ohne emotionale Gravitas. Mit ihrem selbstbetitelten Zweitwerk hat das schweizerisch-schwedische Trio nun die Möglichkeit, diesen Makel zu beseitigen – doch es gelingt nur zu kleinen Teilen.

NORNA reichern die Musik ihres Debütalbums mit etwas Atmosphäre und ein paar Harmonien an, doch es reicht nicht, um „Norna“ dauerhaft mitreißend werden zu lassen.
„Norna“ beginnt erbarmungslos düster und repetitiv mit dem schleppenden „Samsara“ und schraubt die Negativität mit rostigem Werkzeug in die Hirne der Hörenden. Nun, dass NORNA ein leichtverdauliches Album erschaffen würden, war ausgeschlossen, doch dieser Schwall an Negativität ist schon besonders. Liljedahl und seine beiden Mitstreiter lassen das Skalpell ruhen und gehen mit dem Holzhammer vor, selbst dann, wenn sie trostlose Zeitlupenriffs und -grooves mit einem Hauch Laut-Leise-Dynamik und Atmosphäre abwechseln. Schon „Samsara“ zieht sich mit seinen sieben Minuten überraschend stark, auch trotz dieser homöopathischen Abwechslung.

Das pechschwarze Spiel geht fünf Songs und 33 Minuten lang so weiter und findet nur wenige Highlights. Der Sludge des Trios ist auf maximale Brutalität und Tristesse gepolt und dabei werden die wirklichen Emotionen leider vergessen. Immerhin, NORNA beweisen zwischendurch, dass sie ein Händchen für Melodien („For Fear Of Coming“) und Atmosphäre („Shine By It’s Own Light“) haben und es gibt mehrere Songs mit wirklich guten Mainriffs als Ausgangspunkt („Ghost“, „Shadow Works“), doch die Band kastriert sich selbst, indem sie ihre Stücke nicht zur vollen Größe wachsen lässt.

Die Gravitas von „Norna“ ist da, aber die Ganzheitlichkeit fehlt: NORNA beschränken sich auf das rein akustische, nicht das emotionale Erleben.
Vielleicht ist es genau das, was NORNA ausdrücken wollen – dieses tonnenschwere Gewicht der Welt auf den Schultern, das den Menschen nicht wachsen und sich nicht entfalten lässt. Das wird durch die Gravitas des Albums spürbar und so heben sich NORNA auch von der lärmenden Antimusik PRIMITIVE MANs ab. Deshalb ist es schade, dass „Norna“ nicht zu Ende gedacht scheint, ein wenig wie ein Schnellschuss. So als hätte das Trio die Eckpunkte abgeklopft („Mainriff? Check. Kurzer Melodiepart? Check. Atmosphärischer Part? Check.), und dann die Songs vorschnell abgenickt.

Es steckt viel Erfahrung und Potenzial in dem Trio, gleichzeitig ist NORNA eine limitierte Band, die sich zu stark auf die üblichen Zutaten verlässt. Im Prinzip führt Tomas Liljedahl damit den zu THE OLD WIND eingeschlagenen Weg weiter, nur dass die simplen Zutaten von damals für das Heute nicht mehr ausreichen. Das ist insofern schade, da NORNA das Zeug zu viel mehr hätten – selbst wenn sie sie die allumfassende Dunkelheit und unerträgliche Schwere der Seele so minimalistisch hör- und spürbar machen wollen. Kurz: Ins Hirn fräsen sich die Songs zwar bis zu einem gewissen Grad, aber eben nicht ins Herz.

Soft Kill returns with Roseland, a three-track EP that showcases their knack for being prolific and ever-evolving, seamlessly blending light and dark to keep their sound feeling perpetually fresh. Never content to repeat themselves, the band continues to push their creative boundaries, crafting songs that balance between bright, jangly melodies and shadowy, introspective undertones. On Roseland, they take this interplay further, creating a rich, atmospheric journey that swings from moments of melancholic beauty to deeper, more unsettling passages while maintaining their distinct post-punk edge.

The EP opens with “Blood On My Shoes,” a track that plunges the listener into a brooding, slow-burn intensity with its echoing drums and jagged guitar riffs. It moves like a dense fog creeping over deserted streets, its layers building with a deliberate, almost cinematic tension. There’s an ominous edge here as the song journeys into the heart of darkness, where each note feels like a step further away from the light.

The title track, “Roseland,” follows and shifts gears with a burst of jangly energy, reminiscent of The Ocean Blue colliding with The Smiths on a road trip mixtape. It’s a bouncy, bittersweet anthem where melancholy dances with a hint of optimism, all driven by infectious guitars and Tobias Grave’s wistful, sighing vocals. It’s catchy yet complex, a tune that wraps its sadness in a smile, leaving a mark that’s hard to shake off—a sort of dance with despair that feels oddly exhilarating. The song’s visualizer video adds a contrasted layer of intensity, splicing together a grim compilation of gore-filled scenes from 80s horror classics like Friday the 13th, Day of the Dead, The Thing, and Robocop.

Softkill’s surprise EP closes with a sharp take on DC hardcore outfit Dag Nasty’s 1986 scorcher “Circles.” Soft Kill keeps the punk pulse intact while injecting the track with unexpected harmonies that lend it a surprising emotional depth. It’s a cover that stays true to its roots but dares to wander off the beaten path, adding a new dimension to a familiar riff and closing the EP with a sense of raw renewal.

Weniger sei manchmal mehr, monierten wir 2022 noch in Bezug auf „King Of The North“. Jetzt aber sehen wir uns eines Besseren belehrt, denn WOLFHEART demonstrieren uns zwei Jahre später, dass es weniger auf die Menge als das Mischverhältnis ankommt. Orchestrale Begleitung ist etwa ein Fixpunkt des Openers „Ancient Cold“, doch ist der Mix derart gut balanciert, dass der Bombast nicht überhandnimmt. Stattdessen stehen eingängige Riffs, überlegt platzierter Klargesang und die bandtypische Urgewalt gleichberechtigt Seite and Seite.

Ähnliches beobachten wir in „Evenfall“, wo sich die anfängliche Streicherbegleitung im mittleren Drittel vornehm zurückzieht. Durch diesen Ansatz bewahren sich WOLFHEART all ihre Trademarks, opfern weder die bedrückenden, teils melancholischen Untertöne noch den Drive, den ihr Melodic Death Metal mit bisweilen erdrückender Kraft entwickeln kann. „Burning Sky“ etwa erinnert zwischen Tuomas Saukkonnens donnerndem Growling und der klagenden Melodieführung an eine symphonische und dramatischere Version INSOMNIUMs.

Öfter als zuletzt auf „King Of The North“ schmücken die Finnen ihre Songs zudem mit klar gesungenen Passagen aus, verwenden diese jedoch bedacht und zurückhaltend, sodass sie vielmehr als weiteres Stilmittel denn unabdingbarer Fixpunkt dienen. Vor allem dem getragenen „Scion Of The Flame“ sowie dem Midtempo-Groover „Death Leads The Way“ kommt diese Facette zugute.

Auf “Draconian Darkness” harmonieren die einzelnen Komponenten des WOLFHEART-Sounds besser als je zuvor
Überhaupt ist das Pacing bzw. die Spannungskurve von „Draconian Darkness“ eine seiner größten Stärken: Nicht einzelne Stücke, sondern das Gesamtwerk machen in diesem Fall das Album, wo die furiosen Blast Beats von „Grave“ genau zum richtigen Zeitpunkt kommen und die eingesprenkelten Melodeath-Riffs dem theatralischen Pomp von „Throne Of Bones“ die nötige Leichtigkeit entgegensetzt.

Das hält die Platte, aber auch einzelne Tracks frisch, eben weil WOLFHEART beim Songwriting nicht einfach klassische Mainstream-Strukturen in ein aggressiveres Outfit zwängen. Schlussendlich ist es das Gleichgewicht, das „Draconian Darkness“ über seinen Vorgänger hebt und unsere einstigen Einwände ganz schnell zur Seite wischt: Die Finnen servieren weiterhin genug von allem, doch harmonieren die einzelnen Komponenten nun vielleicht besser als je zuvor.

New York’s synth-pop savants Xeno & Oaklander are back with their eighth full-length effort, Via Negativa (in the doorway light), slated for a fall release via Dais Records. The avant-garde duo of Liz Wendelbo and Sean McBride—long known for their meticulous blend of retro and futurist aesthetics—have today revealed the album’s title track alongside a new music video that plunges headfirst into an unsettling realm of analog surrealism.

The concept behind Via Negativa borrows from the philosophical— “the study of what not to do,” as they describe it, “a negative image of a positive, the other side, the other.” It’s an approach that speaks to their entire oeuvre, a balancing act between structure and void, signal and noise. The new record, born from their late 2023 sessions, crystallizes this duality: a collection of modular synth symphonies that pulse with both precision and visceral intensity.

Crafted in the pair’s shadowy studio sanctum, these compositions started as embryonic piano lines and grew into elaborate, interconnected modular synth systems. McBride, ever the architect, adds what he calls “harmonic padding,” weaving together tuned percussion and a “spectral transfer device” to shape the album’s rhythmic architecture. The outcome is a deeply textured sonic landscape that captures Xeno & Oaklander’s fascination with the tension between raw spontaneity and measured exactitude.

While there’s a deliberate intricacy to the production, the emotional core remains sharp and vibrant. Via Negativa (in the doorway light) doesn’t just float on shimmering synths—it throbs with life, darting between frenetic choruses that evoke images of broken mirrors, fractured light, and ghostly visages suspended in static. These are no mere exercises in style; they are anthems for a cybernetic dawn.

The visual companion to the title track, directed by Scott Kiernan, draws heavily from Carmelo Bene’s Amleto and Raúl Ruiz’s The Hypothesis of the Stolen Painting. The video is a delirious mash of 1970s analog techniques, a chaotic collage of fading images, disembodied gestures, and jarring colors that disintegrate within the frame. Kiernan uses vintage broadcast cameras to craft a space where filmic constraints turn to poetic disarray, where each frame is a fragile echo of a bygone era.

From its opening moments, Via Negativa (in the doorway light) sweeps across a spectrum of tones and textures, an exploration of the interplay between sound and space, light and shadow. The album leans into theatrical drama, with each track unspooling a narrative that shifts between abstract and visceral. Whether it’s tragic figures suffocating in mercury mines or spectral synths echoing across desolate industrial sites, Xeno & Oaklander have created a work that feels both timeless and tethered to the now—haunted yet hopeful, methodical yet maddening.

Throughout the album, Wendelbo’s vocals hover in a state of otherworldly calm, drawing you deeper into the cryptic landscape they’ve constructed. Her lyrics—alternating between English and French—explore existential themes with a painterly touch, marrying technological rigor to poetic sensibility. Tracks move from bloodstone ballads to pulsing EBM rhythms, reaffirming the duo’s ability to fuse the mechanical with the mystical, the corporeal with the celestial.

It’s imminent the collapse of his surroundings

It is said that time can erode all things, but there are moments when lost fragments resurface, clearer and sharper than before, casting light into forgotten corners. A Gentle Collapsing, the unearthed treasure from post-punk trio Remnant Three, is one such fragment—a spectral apparition of an era, lying dormant for over three decades. Recorded and shelved, this album embodies the spirit of its time, capturing the sense of drifting, unmoored existence with an aching intimacy. Borrowing its name from Talking Heads’ “The Overload,” this collection of songs plunges deep into the post-punk psyche, crafting a unique atmosphere out of the cold detachment and fleeting, fragile joy characteristic of the genre. Here, think of the visceral angst of Joy Division, the shadowed tones of Faith-era Cure, and the dark processions of early New Order, and the poetic intricacies of Sad Lovers and Giants.

As the millennium turned, Minneapolis label Words on Music managed to coax the defunct Remnant Three out of their self-imposed silence, convincing them to release this forgotten work. What followed was a delicate restoration of the original Fostex 8-track reel-to-reel source tapes, allowing the songs to finally breathe in their intended form.

Remnant Three has always shunned the spotlight, determined to let the music speak for itself. Their ethos? Strip away the unnecessary noise of “who” and “where.” For them, the essence of art lies in the “what.” There’s no backstory to confine them, no names or dates to anchor them to any one place or identity. Theirs is a purity that insists the listener focus only on the raw emotion and soundscapes they’ve meticulously constructed—timeless and unmoored, a challenge to any notion of linear progression or relevance.

Learning their instruments as they went along, the trio approached music-making like an obsessive ritual. The drums were a fixation—they would toil for hours to perfect their sound using only a sparse arsenal of effects. Recording live, they filled two tracks with the drum sound and stretched the remaining six to their limits, experimenting with tape manipulation and reverse echo, like an alchemist refining base materials into gold. The commitment to their craft is evident on every track; each beat, each bassline channels the urgency and darkness of the late ’70s and early ’80s post-punk underground.

A Gentle Collapsing opens with “The Gilded Infancy,” a track paired with a stark black-and-white video that traverses desolate landscapes—a broken trestle bridge, a solitary chimney standing where a home once was, the quiet persistence of a waterfall, and an abandoned orchard. Each frame a quiet cry of absence, of something lost to time’s relentless erosion. The music, too, captures this spectral feeling: deep, resonant guitars blend with a vocal delivery that’s more incantation than singing, accompanied by synths that whisper like wind over an empty plain. It’s a visual and sonic poem of loss and resilience, beauty that aches with every note and every breath, lingering like the faint shadow of a bruise that never quite heals.

Remnant Three’s sneaky, sharp songwriting stands out on Permanent. The tom-tom drumming, nodding with equal reverence to Joy Division’s Stephen Morris and And Also The Trees. The otherworldly, Cure-esque guitars dance with angular bass, with both instruments spiraling into more intricate loops. This is old-school post-punk perfection, with a seductive vocal like a troubadour lulling you into a trance.

From the moment “Permanent” drifts into the fray, the album’s intensity only deepens, anchoring the listener in a soundscape both familiar and newly invigorated. The track’s tom-heavy drumming calls back to Stephen Morris of Joy Division, while also nodding to the haunting minimalism of And Also The Trees. Layered atop are the chiming, Cure-esque guitars and a serpentine bassline that coils around itself, creating a trance-like atmosphere. This is post-punk in its purest form, a blend of brooding nostalgia and raw immediacy, pulling you further into its darkly seductive embrace.

The journey continues with Anomie, which taps into a headier, late ‘60s psych-rock vibe, yet retains that post-punk edge. Here, the band channels the existential poise of English folk, the piercing intensity of Jefferson Airplane, and the stark, austere minimalism of early Joy Division. The Predicant tips its hat to Spacemen 3 as the band toys with backward vocal tape echo, setting them against hypnotic drums and pounding piano. There is a timeless gothic rock meets alt-rock sound to it with the rousing bass and guitars, thudding like heartbeats. It channels the intensity of The Cure and Joy Division at their darkest as the vocal guides us down a narrow corridor of mystery and sorrow.

Words Are Fading lures the listener into an entranced state, with vocals that glide over an undulating melody shaped by an Eastern scale. The result is reminiscent of the early, haunting work of Dead Can Dance, with a 1960s garage rock influence seeping through the fuzz-laden drone. This is music that wraps around you like a mist—otherworldly and timeless, where every note is tinged with both nostalgia and yearning. Uncertain of Fire opens as a somber dirge, marked by a sorrowful guitar that intertwines with a deep, steady bassline and ethereal synths. The hushed, almost whispered vocals add to the sense of introspection and solitude, like a confession lost to the wind.

A Cold Removal takes this mournful progression further. A jangling hi-hat and a slow, marching beat lay the groundwork for a composition that gradually lifts, allowing rays of brighter, jangly melodies to pierce through. This song feels like a melancholic awakening, drawing comparisons to the atmospheric depths of Dif Juz or even the more experimental edges of early Yes. The vocal harmonies here are delicate, almost angelic, guiding the melody through its haunting journey from darkness to a tentative light.

As the album draws to a close with M.L., Remnant Three plunges us deep into a soundscape that could only emerge from the earliest days of Factory Records. The drums are portent, ominous, and commanding, while the guitars and synths swirl in a vortex of despair, evoking a sense of aftermath and reflection. It’s ritualistic and mournful, but also transcendent, drawing from the otherworldly psychedelia of King Crimson—a haunting litany that brings the album to its final, evocative end.

At last, Remnant Three’s A Gentle Collapsing will receive its long-overdue physical release on vinyl and compact disc on September 13, 2024. This album is a testament to the timeless spirit of post-punk—a genre forever caught between the past and an uncertain future, much like the music of Remnant Three itself.

Die Progressive Rock-Band BEARDFISH kehrt mit einem neuen Album zurück. Nach der zwischenzeitlichen Auflösung im Jahr 2016 und den ersten gemeinsamen Konzerten 2024 soll nun am 1. November 2024 eine neue Platte folgen. Sie trägt den Titel “Songs For Beating Hearts”, die erste Single daraus heißt “In The Autumn“. Als Gast ist Sängerin Amanda Örtenhag zu hören.

Die Electronic / Psychedelic Rock-Band AUA hat mit “Terminal” eine erste Single ihres kommenden Albums “Painkiller No. 1” veröffentlicht. Es ist nach “I Don’t Want It Darker” (2020) und “The Damaged Organ” (2022) das dritte Album des Leipziger Duos, welches aus Fabian Bremer und Henrik Eichmann besteht.

“Painkiller No. 1” wurde von Magnus Wichmann gemixt und gemastert und wird am 8. November 2024 via Crazysane Records erscheinen.

Am 4. Oktober 2024 erscheint das neue D-A-D Album “Speed Of Darkness”. Die 13. Platte der Dänen erscheint via AFM Records. Einen doppelten Vorgeschmack liefern die Singles “Keep That MF Down” sowie “Head Over Heels“.

Nun gibt es zu einem der neuen Songs auch ein Lyrics-Video: “The Ghost” bei YouTube. Im Mai haben D-A-D die ersten beiden Songs der neuen Platte als Stream geteilt, “The Ghost” “1st, 2nd & 3rd” kann man sich bei den üblichen Streamingdiensten anhören.

„‚The Ghost‘ ist ein epischer Knaller samt skandinavischer Melancholie. Ein Song über getrennte Liebe, Verlust und Hoffnung in einer fragmentierten Zeit. Über das Festhalten an etwas, das kommen könnte oder schon verschwunden ist. Bei „1st, 2nd & 3rd“ geht es um den langen, harten Einfluss, wenn man versucht, etwas zu entkommen, das einen wirklich zurückhält. In der Sucht gefangen zu sein mit Rückfällen in schlechte Beziehungen, mit der Hoffnung, weiterzukommen.“

Nick Foss hat “Speed Of Darkness” produziert, das Mastering ist von Jacob Hansen.

Im Sommer sind D-A-D auf einigen Festivals zu sehen, im November ist die Band auch in Deutschland auf Tour (Termine s. unten).

Die Heavy Psychedelic Rock-Band KANT wird am 27. September 2024 via Sound Of Liberation Records ihr neues Album “Paranoia Pilgrimage” veröffentlichen. Es ist nach “When The Strangers Come To Town” (2023) das zweite Album der Deutschen aus Aschaffenburg.

“Paranoia Pilgrimage” wurde von Patrick Stäudle in den Glaswald Studios produziert. Vorab gibt es nach “Lord OF The Flies” auch einen Video-Clip zu “Baba Yaga“.

Die amerikanische Formation um den charismatischen Sänger Mychael Ghost konnte mich bereits mit ihrer 2014er Veröffentlichung „Stereo Waltz“ überzeugen. Somit war ihnen damals die Höchstnote sicher und die Latte für die Zukunft hoch gehängt. 2016 folgte mit „Until The End Of The Moon“ der Nachfolger. Mit dem dritten Album legten ASTARI NITE erneut ein Werk vor, welches sehr stimmig daher kommt und die Düsternis mit erhabenen Klangstrukturen paart. Hinzu kommt diese wunderschöne Stimme, welche zuweilen an den großen Bowie heranreicht. Nun also bereits das fünfte Album der Formation.

Ein schräges Intro leitet das Album mit „Double Feature Matinee“ ein, ein Song der sich geschickt zwischen Cold Wave, elektronischen Finessen und einem Bowieesken Charme vor dem schwarzen Herzen verneigt. Gelungene Melodielinien auf denen der Gesang tanzt, werden mit einer galanten Melancholie garniert, welche dem Stück die passende tragische Note verleiht. Das folgende „Neccecity Metal“ ist mit einer abgedrehten, fast spacigen Klanglandschaft versehen. Der Gesang im Nebel des Widerstands, dennoch mit diesem Weichzeichner versehen. Ein abgedrehter, leicht untypischer Song. „Tongue Tied Galore“beginnt fast ein wenig symphonisch, danach gibt eine galante Kühle und auch das fortschreiten ist ein wenig Cold Wave-mäßig, mit einer feinen Note Bauhaus.

„Bowie in Daydreams“ ist ein musikalisches Zauberwerk, das sich durch seine geschickte Zusammenstellung von den anderen Tracks abhebt und dieses phänomenale künstlerische Können unter Beweis stellt. Hinterhältige, köstliche Feinheiten mit dunklem Touch finden sich in dem überraschenden, Genre-übergreifenden „The Inevitable Crocodile“. Der Beginn ist cineastisch und lässt Mychael Ghost geschickt schweben. Die experimentell dahinfließende Langsamkeit hat etwas der 70er. Der latent schräge Kosmos beliebt es, die Tragik schreiten zu lassen. Das sphärische „Ashtray Ballet“ besitzt unterschwellig eine rohe, schwere Elektronik, die fast eine melodische Leichtigkeit konterkariert. Zudem scheint hier Industrial kurzzeitig auf Prog Metal zu treffen. Zum Ende gibt es, das langsam beginnende „We are still Siamese“, welches irgendwie die Atmosphäre von Cure’s „Kiss“-Album aufgreift, wobei hier eine weitergehende Fragilität dem Song eine gewisse Schwere verleiht.

Fazit: ASTARI NITE klingt wie die perfekte Verschmelzung von Dark Wave und Bowie. Wunderschöne Melodielinien, durchbrochen von schräger Elektronik, führen doch immer in eingängige Facetten der dunklen Musik. Ein feiner Sänger, der nicht seine Stimmbänder, sondern das Klangbild in den Schoß der geneigten Hörer legt. Ein insgesamt gelungenes Album voller kleiner Wegscheidungen. (andreas)

Ready yourselves: it is time to dive into the dark and dazzling depths of post-punk and gothic grooves as Brazil’s Wave Festival marks its tenth return around the sun. São Paulo will sizzle this March with a two-night tribute to ten years of tantalizing tunes.

The festival, helmed by Wave Records, a Brazilian indie label dedicated to curating and championing the bold, the beautiful, and the bizarre of the underground music scene, has grown from a single-day event in February 2015 with 56 live concerts and 15 additional events into one of the most anticipated alternative music festivals in the region. Since 2017, the festival has been hosted at São Paulo’s venerable MADAME Club.

Drab Majesty: Enigmatic and androgynous, Drab Majesty wields a melancholic yet ethereal mix of synth-laden post-punk, calling back to the golden era of the 80s while setting their own course toward the astral unknown. Their live shows are a blend of surrealism and spectacle, drawing audiences into their peculiar twilight world.
Diavol Strain: Chile’s darkwave stalwarts, Diavol Strain, are fierce purveyors of a raw and rebellious sound that blends deathrock grit with gothic romance. Their live performances are an intoxicating mix of fury and fervor, steeped in the politics of resistance and wrapped in noir aesthetics.
Pecadores: Veterans of Brazil’s gothic scene, Pecadores deliver a visceral fusion of classic goth rock and post-punk energy, their songs filled with existential laments and haunting melodies that linger long after the last note fades. They are a powerful reminder of Brazil’s deep roots in the global dark music community.

Twilight Ritual: Belgian legends Twilight Ritual are masters of minimal wave and synthpop, their music a hypnotic journey into the cold, mechanical heart of the 1980s underground. Known for their sparse yet evocative arrangements, they craft an atmosphere both nostalgic and otherworldly.
Tempers: New York’s Tempers create a unique brand of noir-pop, a delicate interplay of icy synths and introspective lyrics, capturing both the fragility and resilience of the human experience. Night In Athens: A London-based project that channels the eerie echoes of European minimal synth and cold wave while injecting a modern vitality. Her music immerses listeners in a phantasmagorical realm where sci-fi and dark fantasy collide, guided by her voice that shifts from soft murmurs to piercing cries. A standout in the minimal synth and cold wave revival, Night In Athens is known for her visually thrilling stage shows that match her musical energy, making her a must-see act.
