BIG BIG TRAIN haben am 13. September 2024 ein neues Live-Album mit dem Titel “A Flare On The Lens – Live In London” herausgebracht. Darauf befindet sich ein Mitschnitt der beiden Konzerte aus der Londoner Cadogan Hall, die im Laufe der Tour 2023 aufgezeichnet wurden. Die Aufnahme des Stücks “The Connection Plan” kann man sich ebenfalls wie “Love Is The Light” und “A Boy In Darkness” bei YouTube ansehen.

“A Flare On The Lens – Live In London” ist via InsideOut Music auf 3CD+BluRay sowie als Doppel-Vinyl mit ausgewählten Songs erhältlich.

Eine Rückkehr zu alter Härte verspricht WHITECHAPEL-Frontmann Phil Bozeman mit der neuen Single “A Visceral Retch“:

“‘A Visceral Retch’ ist ein Song, den Fans von ‘The Somatic Defilement‘ sofort ins Herz schließen werden. Es war einer der ersten Songs, die wir in der Schublade hatten um damit zu arbeiten. Dieser Song entstand vor allem dank [Gitarrist] Zach Householder. Er zeigte ihn uns, und wir sagten alle sofort: ‘Ja, das ist es.’ Zach ist berüchtigt für sehr düstere und horrorähnliche Vibes, also ist dieses Album genau sein Ding. Der Song ist verstörend. Stellt euch vor, ihr werdet von gefräßigen, riesigen Dämonen in eine schwierige Überlebenssituation versetzt, die euch vor die Wahl stellt. Friss den Abfall der Dämonen, fresst euch gegenseitig, oder verhungert. Der Clou ist, dass man sich gegen die Menschen stellt, die man am meisten liebt. Auf diese Weise findet man diejenigen, die wirklich böse Menschen sind, um seinen Kult aufzubauen und zu stärken. Die Dissonant Death Metal-Band HIERARCHIES hat einen Labeldeal bei Transcending Obscurity Records unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen werden die US-Amerikaner rund um Anthony Wheeler (DWELLING BELOW, HOLLOWED IDOLS) und Jared Moran (ACAUSAL INTRUSION, HOLLOWED IDOLS, KAMIKAZE PILOTS, OBSIDIAN HOOVES) ihr neues, erste und selbstbetiteltes Album veröffentlichen. Da kommt wieder feiner alternativer Post Punk ins Haus geflattert. Die neue und zweite CD der Bochumer Indie Combo INADREAM, die sich 2016 gegründet hatten, veröffentlichen aktuell ihr neues Album „Strange Words“ mit 10 Songs bei Echozone. Und wie beim Vorgänger „No Songs For Lovers“ geht es auch hier wieder direkt in die Ebenen der 80er Retro Gitarren Rock Welten und das mit viel Reminiszenz an eben diese golden Zeiten damals. Die fetten Noise Gitarren von Thorsten Wüllner, die smashigen, dynamischen Beats von Achim Bockermann, die markanten Basslinien von Dennis Wüllner und die tragende, emotional passende Rock Voice incl. Gitarre von Fronter Frank Bottke gefallen sicher den Fans von Gruppen wie LEMONHEADS, THE CLASH, GREEN DAY, PIXIES, WIRE, BLINK 182, THE RAMONES und vor allem JOY DIVISION, da der Track „Dead Souls“, von der Vorgängerband von NEW ORDER, hier ganz großartig in der so ganz eigenen Version von INADREAM gecovert wurde. Auch das andere Cover „Here Comes The Rain Again“ von den göttlichen EURYTHMICS, das auf der B Seite der Single „DIE AWAY“ zu finden ist, kann Fans des gepflegten Cover Gitarrenrocks wahrlich begeistern, natürlich auch hier wieder in ihrer eigenen Ausrichtung, einfach wunderbar kreativ umgesetzt. Der fulminante Mix aus abwechslungsreichen Punk, leichten Ska Einflüssen, mitreißendem Rock und gelungenen Wave Einflüssen in Verbindung mit den eingängigen Klanglandschaften und vor allem dem Fokus auf Gitarren Ohrwürmern, wurde der breiten NRW Öffentlichkeit schon beim Bochumer Musiksommer und beim Festival „Bochum Total“ erfolgreich präsentiert. Sowohl textlich inhaltlich als auch musikalisch kann man die Platte wahrlich sehr empfehlen und den Longplayer allen Genre Fans nur ans Rockherz legen, die Tracks sind außerdem auch fast alle äußerst Tanzbar gestaltet, was in den Clubs auf jeden Fall zünden sollte. Vorab wurde die erste Single „Die Away“ inklusive dem Musikvideo veröffentlicht und im September die zweite Singe „White Light“ diese sogar mit „Dead Souls“ als B Seite, und auch incl. Videoclip, hier wurden also schon mal keine halben Sachen gemacht. Und nach der Album Veröffentlichung erscheint als Sahnehäubchen noch der Titeltrack der Platte „Strange Words“ als Single. Da bin ich auch schon auf die B Seite sehr gespannt, ob sich die Jungs da wieder was schickes einfallen lassen! Dann schauen wir doch mal, wo wir die Band irgendwann mal live erleben können.

Die Hamburger Metal-Veteranen PARAGON haben ihr neues Album angekündigt. “Metalation” erscheint am 8. November 2024 über Massacre Records. Eine Video zur ersten Single “Fighting The Fire” wurde gerade veröffentlicht. „Ein typischer und schneller Paragon-Opener, nur dass wir den Refrain mit einer schönen eingängigen Melodie aufgepeppt haben, um Buschis Gesangslinie zu unterstützen,“ sagt Bassist Jan Bünning.

Erster Song vom neuen PARAGON Album “Metalation” online
Die Realisierung von “Metalation” war nicht sicher, da sich die Band in der Zeit zwischen der Veröffentlichung des Vorgängeralbums “Controlled Demolition” und dem heutigen Tag fast aufgelöst hätte. Jan Bünning und Gitarrist Martin Christian begannen im Winter 2019 mit der Arbeit an neuen Songideen, die Corona-Pandemie brachte einen Großteil der Bandaktivitäten zum Erliegen. Dennoch schrieben beide weiter an neuen Songs. Während “Controlled Demolition” ein sehr hartes und schnelles Album war, entschieden PARAGON, dass es keinen Sinn machen würde, dieses Muster noch einmal zu wiederholen und entschieden stattdessen für das neue Album, dass es ein wenig melodischer und vielseitiger klingen sollte, genau wie in ihren guten, alten Zeiten. Produziert wurde “Metalation” gemeinsam mit Piet Sielck, welcher ebenfalls für den Mix und das Mastering verantwortlich war.

Gitarrist Günny verließ die Band im Spätsommer 2022, ebenso wie sein Nachfolger und Drummer Sören. Die verbliebenen Bandmitglieder spielten mit dem Gedanken, ein letztes Album zu veröffentlichen und einige Abschiedsshows – mit Martin an der Gitarre und seinem Sohn Jason Wöbcke am Schlagzeug – zu spielen, und PARAGON dann aufzulösen. Jason stieg dauerhaft am Schlagzeug ein und Martin entschied sich, ebenfalls zu bleiben. Die Chemie zwischen allen Bandmitgliedern ist besser denn je, und so ist es nicht überraschend, dass alle mit dem neuen Album mehr als zufrieden sind. PARAGON können es kaum erwarten, dass alle das neue Album hören, und sie freuen sich schon darauf, wieder auf der Bühne zu stehen. Wie auf dem HEADBANGERS OPEN AIR 2025, dort werden PARAGON ein Oldschool-Set spielen.

Mit “The Duality of Decapitation and Wisdom” wird am 15. November 2024 via Transcending Obscurity Records das neue Album der Black / Death Metal-Band VEILBURNER erscheinen. Es ist das siebte Album des US-amerikanischen Duos aus Pennsylvania. Und die Zahl “Sieben” spielt auch eine besondere Rolle auf dem Album: Sieben Songs, jeder genau sieben Minuten lang, mit zusätzlichen Huldigungen, die sich in den Titelkonventionen und der lyrischen Struktur wiederfinden.

“Die Zahl Sieben hat in der Geschichte der Menschheit eine besondere Bedeutung gehabt. Sie wurde in der Theologie und in der Kunst in vielen Kulturen über viele Epochen hinweg verehrt und als wiederkehrende, grundlegende Zahl in der Erforschung der natürlichen Welt beobachtet”, heißt es von der Band.

ENSIFERUM stellen mit einem Lyric-Video zu “Long Cold Winter Of Sorrow And Strife” die zweite Single ihres kommenden Albums vor. Die neunte Platte der finnischen Folk-Metal-Band trägt den Titel “Winter Storm” und erscheint am 18. Oktober 2024 via  Metal Blade Records. Den ersten Höreindruck verschaffte im Juni das  Video zu “Winter Storm Vigilantes”.

Sami Hinkka, Sänger und Bassist von ENSIFERUM, hat für das Album Teile seines Fantasy-Romans als Vorlage genommen:

“Ich denke, ‘Winter Storm’ eher eine Art ‘Musical’ als ein traditionelles Album: Die Texte basieren auf einem Teil meines unveröffentlichten Fantasy-Buches. Eines Tages wird es erscheinen…  Ich möchte nicht zu viel über die Handlung oder Details verraten, aber ‘Winter Storm Vigilantes’ und ‘Fatherland’ erzählen von zwei Parteien dieser Fantasy-Geschichte, den Vigilanten und einem kleinen Stamm im Norden. Die Vigilanten sind in der Lage, ein bestimmtes seltenes Elemente zu nutzen, und obwohl es in ihrer Welt bereits Magie gab, haben sie mit diesem Wissen eine völlig neue Ebene erreicht. Dieses Element scheint auf eine Weise mit lebenden Dingen zu interagieren, die selbst die weisesten Menschen nicht vollständig verstehen. Über Generationen haben sie es geschafft, mit Hilfe des Elements das Gesetz der Schwerkraft zu brechen und ihre Pferde fliegen zu lassen. Aber sie wurden rücksichtslos, gierig und wollten immer mehr von diesem Element. Ein kleiner Stamm im Norden kämpft weiter um sein Land, das die Vigilanten erobern wollen. Und diese Leute aus dem Norden werden buchstäblich bis zum letzten Mann kämpfen…

Weitere Figuren sind ein Ausgestoßener der Vigilanten, der letzte Schamane des Nordvolkes und eine geheimnisvolle Witwe. Das Album endet mit einer großen Schlacht gegen die Vigilanten und einer unheiligen Allianz zwischen dem Ausgestoßenen und dem Schamanen, der sich in einen Wolfsgeist verwandelt. Wer wird sich durchsetzen? Aber wird dies auch wirklich die letzte Schlacht sein? Das alles klingt vielleicht sehr weit hergeholt – nun, es ist ein Fantasy-Buch. Aber es ist auch eine wahrhaft epische Geschichte!”

Janne Joutsenniemi hat “Winter Storm” produziert, der Mix kommt von Jens Bogren. Als Gastmusiker waren Lassi Logrén mit Nyckelharpa und Violine an dem Album beteiligt, Mikko Mustonen sorgte für die Orchesterparts, ELEINE-Sängerin Madeleine Liljestam steuerte Gesang zum Song “Scars In My Heart” bei.

Der erste Teil mit dem Titel „III-III“ ist eine Sammlung ihrer neuesten Kompositionen, die in den letzten zehn Jahren entstanden sind. Diese Tracks wurden sorgfältig im Antric Light Records Studio produziert und 2024 gemastert. Der zweite Teil, „Upphaf“, bietet eine umfassende Retrospektive der Bandgeschichte. Hier werden ausgewählte Stücke neu überarbeitet, aufgenommen und produziert, um die musikalische Entwicklung von KROMLEK eindrucksvoll zu dokumentieren.

Das schwedische Post-Punk/Goth-Trio THEN COMES SILENCE veröffentlichte Anfang des Jahres über Metropolis Records das Album „Trickery“, ihr siebtes Album. Jetzt gibt es ein neues Video für den Song „Stay Strange“, in dem Dusty Gannon von der Band Vision Video zu sehen ist. „‚Stay Strange!‘ ist der Ruf, den Dusty Gannon von Vision Video nach jeder Show schreit“, erklärt THEN COMES SILENCE-Frontmann Alex Svenson den Refrain des Songs ‚Stay strange and pure at heart‘. „Als wir von unserer letzten Tour mit ihnen nach Hause zurückkehrten, begann ich mit der Arbeit an dem Song und machte ihn zu einer Hommage an die Post-Punk/Goth-Szene. Es war auch eine natürliche Wahl, Dusty einzuladen, den Refrain zu singen.“ Das Video zu „Stay Strange“ erscheint pünktlich zum Freitag, den 13. THEN COMES SILENCE werden diesen Herbst auf den Bühnen Europas zu sehen sein.

Man hatte es lange nicht für möglich gehalten, doch es wurde 2020 wahr. Eine der einflussreichsten Bands der britischen Punk-Rock-Szene verkündete eine Reihe von Reunion-Konzerten. Damit wurde der Wunsch vieler Fans von „The Damned“ Wirklichkeit. Dave Vanian, Brian James, Captain Sensible und Rat Scabies sollten nach mehr als 40 Jahren wieder gemeinsam auf der Bühne stehen.  Doch diese Rechnung wurde leider ohne die Pandemie gemacht. Aber die Idee war geboren und so wurden die Shows einfach um 2 Jahre verschoben.Nun war es dann am 03. November 2022 endlich so weit und The Damned gaben ihr erstes Reunion-Konzert im ausverkauften O2 Apollo in Manchester. Zu diesem besonderen Ereignis in der fast halben Jahrhundert Karriere von „The Damned“ spielte man ausschließlich Songs der ersten beiden Alben, bei denen die Ursprungsbesetzung an Bord war. Die Songs der Alben „Damned, Damned, Damned“ und Music for Pleasure“ wurden um die Songs „Pills“ und das Rolling Stones-Cover „The Last Time“ erweitert und von den Fans frenetisch gefeiert. Besonders beeindruckt hat mich bei den Schwenks ins Publikum, wie gemischt doch die Altersstruktur war. So waren die Sechziger und Mittfünfziger neben dem 20er-Gothic-Girl in der ersten Reihe und dahinter pogte die Punkszene. So funktioniert Generationenzusammenhalt. Das schafft nur Musik. Beginnend mit „I feel alright“ ging es den Abend mit den Klassikern der Band weiter bei denen auch Songs gespielt wurden, die es lang nicht ins Live-Programm geschafft hatten. Besonders seien die Damned-Version des Beatles-Klassikers „Help“ und Songs wie „Fan Club“, „Problem Child“, „Stab your back“ oder „Feel the pain“ zu erwähnen. Allen Beteiligten war bewusst, das es sich hier um einen musikalischen Meilenstein handeln wird. So wurde das Konzert sowohl audio- als auch videotechnisch aufgezeichnet und ist ab dem 20.09.2024 weltweit in den Formaten Digital, als 2LP Gatefold und als Ltd. 2CD+DVD Digipak erhältlich. Neben dem Manchester-Konzert als CD und DVD mit dem gesamten Konzert enthält es auf der zweiten CD noch zusätzlich das Konzert vom 05.11.2022 in der O2 Academy Birmingham.  Ein grandioses Rundum-Paket für Fans von The Damned und von britischem Punk, Gothic, New Wave und Psycho-Rock. Wer dabei sein durfte hat nun das Glück, sich diese Momente zurück nach Huase zu holen. Für alle anderen ein weiterer Beweis, das die Band auch nach fast einem halben Jahrhundert nichts von ihrem Charisma verloren hat.

Die Doom / Gothic Metal-Band HELEVORN hat nach “Inherit the Stars” mit “Signals” ein weiteres Video von ihrem neuen Album “Espectres” veröffentlicht. Es ist das fünfte Album der Spanier und wurde gemeinsam mit Miguel A. Riutort (u.a. für GOLGOTHA tätig) aufgenommen. Erschienen ist das Album am 13. September 2024 via Meuse Music Records.

“Das Album basiert auf der Hauntologie, die zuerst von Jaques Derrida und danach von dem Philosophen Mark Fisher beschrieben wurde. Er schrieb ‘The Ghosts of My Life’, ein erstaunliches Buch, in dem er die ‘langsame Annullierung der Zukunft’ und eine Menge großartiger Konzepte über die Gespenster und die Abwesenheiten beschreibt”, erklärt die Band.

Die Metalcore / Alternative Metal-Band NEST OF PLAGUES hat mit “Blood Marks” einen weiteren Video-Clip ihres neuen Albums “Hellsolation” veröffentlicht. Es ist nach “End of the Comedy” (2018) und “To Kill a God” (2022) das dritte Album der Ungarn aus Budapest und erzählt die Geschichte darüber, wie die Band im Laufe der Jahre mit Isolation und psychischen Problemen umgegangen ist.

“Vor fünf Jahren wurde bei mir eine Zwangsstörung diagnostiziert”, sagt Sänger und Bassist Dániel Ivanics. “Unser vorheriges Album “To Kill A God” beschäftigte sich damit, wie ich versuchte, mit dieser Krankheit zu leben, die das tägliche Leben miserabel macht. “Hellsolation” setzt diese Geschichte fort, nähert sich diesen in der modernen Gesellschaft immer häufiger auftretenden Problemen aber aus einem anderen Blickwinkel. Die Texte spiegeln hauptsächlich meinen eigenen Weg wider, erzählen aber auch die Geschichten anderer, die mit Einsamkeit und psychischen Problemen zu kämpfen haben. Die Lehre aus all dem ist, dass man, egal was man tut, am Ende nur auf sich selbst zählen kann. Aber das ist keine negative Botschaft – es geht darum, die innere Stärke zu finden.“

Die Post-Black Metal-Band HELL IS OTHER PEOPLE hat einen Labeldeal bei Transcending Obscurity Records unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen werden die Kanadier ihr neues Album “Moirae” veröffentlichen. Der Release-Termin des nach “Embrace” (2017) zweiten Albums der Band, das mit einem Cover-Artwork von Adam Burke ausgestattet wurde, ist der 11. Oktober 2024. Mit “The Forgotten West” wird am 27. September 2024 die neue EP der Folk Metal-Band FORSAKEN RITE erscheinen. Die Scheibe schließt thematisch an das 2017er-Debütalbum “The Northern Saga” an, indem sich die Band von ihren nördlichen Vorfahren und den wilden Landschaften Kanadas inspirieren ließ.

“The Forgotten West” wurde von Diego Fernandez in den Oracle Recoding Studios produziert und mit einem Cover-Artwork von Renee Robyn ausgestattet.

Nostalgie ist nur ein Teil der Antwort. Warum wir alle die Achtziger – oder genauer gesagt, dieses romantisch-verklärte Bild der Epoche – so lieben, kann man kaum an einer Facette festmachen. Immerhin fühlen sich kurioserweise sogar Kinder der 90er und spätestens seit dem Netflix-Phänomen „Stranger Things“ auch Millennials und Gen Z Neonfarben und Spandex in seltsamer Weise verbunden.

Möglicherweise ist es dieses Bild einer heilen und irgendwie grenzenlos wirkenden Welt: Weil wir noch nicht von Social Media verdorben waren; weil es sich ohne Internet und Smartphone dort draußen nach Abenteuer angefühlt hat; die Reizüberflutung in den Arcade-Hallen etwas Besonderes war und nicht als Teil des Alltags in der Hosentasche steckte.

Die Essenz der 80er einzufangen ist die große Kunst, die NESTOR spielend meistern
Was auch immer hinter dieser Magie steckt, bändigen kann sie wohl keiner so gut wie NESTOR. Das zeigte die AOR / Melodic Rock-Band auf ihrem Debüt „Kids In A Ghost Town“ (2021) und das transportiert sie nun ebenso zielsicher auf dem Nachfolger „Teenage Rebel“. Überraschend ist das keineswegs: Schon vor drei Jahren orakelten wir, dass der große Labeldeal wohl nicht mehr fern sei. Der Zuschlag ging in der Folge an Napalm Records, unter deren Banner NESTOR exakt so weitermachen wie zuvor.

Und das meinen wir im bestmöglichen Sinn, denn die Essenz dieser Ära einzufangen, ist die große Kunst, welche auch „Teenage Rebel“ spielend meistert. Das beginnt bei der Produktion, welche die Songs atmen lässt und den einzelnen Instrumenten viel Raum gibt. Das Schlagzeug klingt geerdet und doch füllend, während die Gitarren im rockigen Titeltrack unverkrampft und belebend zum Tanzen einladen. Seine Power zieht das Stück wie das aufrüttelnde „Victorious“ derweil aus Tobias Gustavssons kraftvollem Gesang, welcher stets ein wenig Pathos, doch noch viel mehr Leidenschaft in sich trägt.

NESTOR verpacken auf “Teenage Rebel” sogar Schwermut in einen packenden Hit
Das spüren wir zuvorderst in den Balladen „Daughter“ und „The One That Got Away“, deren intime Atmosphäre ähnlich unter die Haut geht wie der emotionale Singalong „Caroline“, wo NESTOR die zugrundeliegende Schwermut in einen Hit verpacken, als wäre es die selbstverständlichste aller Übungen. Neben Gustavssons Performance tragen auch die variablen Keyboards zum markanten Charakter des Zweitwerks bei. Ob feinfühliges Piano oder groß angelegte Synth-Akzente: Martin Frejinger trifft stets die perfekte Stimmungslage, um „Teenage Rebel“ authentisch wie zeitlos zu halten.

Die verlässliche Konstante dabei: dieses unverkennbare Gefühl, dass plötzlich alles möglich sei. Natürlich darf man sich dabei von NESTOR auf eine Reise in die Vergangenheit mitnehmen lassen, sich wieder jung fühlen; als der Geschmack der Freiheit noch mit jedem Atemzug auf der Zunge lag. Doch ist Nostalgie eben nur ein Teil der Antwort, die dem Geheimnis der Schweden zugrunde liegt. Entspringt die Musik des Quintetts aus einer tiefen Verbundenheit zur eigenen Jugend, trägt „Teenage Rebel“ diesen Quell doch bis in den heutigen Tag, indem das Album an genau das erinnert, was wir – desillusioniert – im Erwachsenenalter viel zu oft vergessen: So sehr wir uns an unsere Erinnerungen klammern mögen, so sehr sie uns beizeiten Trost spenden, sollten wir doch niemals aufhören zu träumen. Eben so, wie es im Jahr 2021 fünf Jugendfreunde aus Falköping nach fast 30 Jahren gewagt haben.

French synthwave outfit GIIRLS isn’t your run-of-the-mill act: they construct a moody maze steeped in the grit of DEAD and FTR (EX-FUTURE). They’ve strayed from their noisy, shoegaze alleys, but never left them behind. Their synths open new doors—ones with creaky hinges and dim-lit rooms—each leading to fresh places for melody and meaning. There’s a deep nod to film scores and the pulse of basslines that could stir the dead. GIIRLS melds the cool, calculated beats of minimal synth and EBM with the raw nerve of rock and a haunting atmosphere, blurring the lines between genres and leaving you guessing which corner they’ll turn next.

Now GIIRLS is back with the beautiful LP Time of Glass, an album that explores more somber synthwave/electro sounds. There is a mix of both ’80s and modern moods, referencing several legendary bands like The Cure, Trisomie 21, Kavinsky, and The Soft Moon. In this album, the voice is a little more highlighted: a way to open his music to new horizons.

Pure opens with a stark loneliness that feels almost tactile, like the walls of a room closing in. There’s an echo in the vocals—a pleading, a desperate query to stave off the isolation, but the silence grows thick, and the words dissipate like smoke in the night air. The synth pads build a sort of anxious architecture, with their pulsing rhythms mimicking the rapid heartbeat of someone pacing their own thoughts at 3 a.m., each step deeper into an abyss of emotional disconnect.

Fears, featuring the fervent vocals of Modern Men, slinks into the crevices of a fractured relationship where trust has long since evaporated, leaving behind a residue of suspicion and dread. There’s a spectral quality to the track, the kind of cold that clings to you like dampness, the synths drawing from the icy wells of Disintegration-era Cure. This is less a song than a séance, an invocation of past ghosts and broken promises, each note echoing through a darkened room, lingering like the smell of something burning.

With Obscurity, GIIRLS tap into a different vein, a subterranean pulse that ripples beneath whispered vocals and a bassline that feels like it’s dredged up from some ancient, murky pool. Sharp synth lines act like shards of glass, slicing through the fog, leaving behind an unsettling melody that catches you off guard, like a strange noise in an abandoned house. The song is a slow bleed, the kind of tension that unfurls in the half-light, always threatening to collapse but never quite giving in, as if holding back some deeper, more ominous truth.

The coldwave crawl of Black Horse, featuring DEAD, brings with it a stripped-back intensity, a steady march through a landscape littered with emotional debris. There’s something ritualistic about the track’s dirge-like pace, the vocals cutting through with a clarity that feels almost surgical. The lyrics speak of transformation, from the earthbound to the ethereal—where black hooves are shed for wings, where the burden of hate is cast off, and flight becomes an act of rebellion. Here, the music becomes a vehicle for survival, a means of transcending the muck and mire of a world weighed down by its own ugliness.

Illness is an exercise in negation, a mantra of what’s gone and what’s left behind. The repetitive phrases and raw, almost primal vocal delivery tap into a sense of detachment that is both physical and metaphysical. The track feels like a document of loss, where each synth stab and each drumbeat marks another step away from something once known and now irretrievably lost. There is a starkness to it, a refusal to romanticize the pain, leaving only the cold, hard facts of separation and distance.

Asylum For Evil, featuring Francis Mallari of Rendez-Vous, feels like a grand, disillusioned sermon from the mount of a broken world. Die Scheibe folgt auf das 2021er-Debütalbum “Broken Mortal Coil” und wurde von Gitarrist Jeff Wilson (CHROME WAVES, DEEPER GRAVES, ex-NACHTMYSTIUM) gemixt und gemastert. Release-Termin ist der 18. Oktober 2024 via Disorder Recordings. Das Cover-Artwork stammt von Andre Trindade.

Stark shadows cast over jagged sets, faces contorted in anguish and ecstasy—the world of German Expressionist cinema birthed a visual lexicon that continues to ripple through pop culture today. Films like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and The Man Who Laughs, both immortalized by the haunting performances of Conrad Veidt, shattered conventional storytelling with their distorted realities and psychological depth. Their influence spans decades: a still from Caligari even graces the back cover of Bauhaus’ iconic single Bela Lugosi’s Dead, and the film’s nightmarish aesthetic laid the groundwork for Tim Burton’s unmistakable style. Meanwhile, Veidt’s unsettling grin in The Man Who Laughs directly inspired the creation of one of pop culture’s most infamous villains—The Joker—whose chilling smile has terrorized Gotham City for generations. More than just changing popular culture forever, these masterpieces shaped a language of shadows that speaks to the darkest corners of the human psyche.

That same language of shadows is spoken fluently by She Past Away, one of the premier bands in today’s flourishing dark-wave scene. The Turkish duo fuses the essence of ’80s post-punk guitar riffs with tenebrous synths and stark, haunting lyrics, crafting music that, like those early films, grapples with anxiety, nihilism, and the human condition’s murkier waters. Their music doesn’t just tug at the nerves—it claws deep, dredging up an intimate kind of darkness, yet paradoxically universal, unafraid to confront taboos while diving headlong into the shadows much like the expressionist films that inspired them.

After a stretch of silence, the haunting strains of their new single Ä�nziva herald a formidable return, stirring anticipation and teasing a new chapter in their evolving narrative. The band’s hiatus wasn’t one of inactivity; instead, it was a period of intense global touring that refined their live show’s brooding energy, all of which has seeped into this new release. The title Ä�nziva, meaning “seclusion” or “retreat”, speaks volumes, hinting at both a withdrawal and a brewing storm.

The brilliant new video for the Turkish-crooned Ä�nziva is a masterpiece of German Expressionism draped in desolation and gloom. The short film, brought to life by Muted Widows, is directed by Nedda Afsari and Michael E. Linn and produced by Michael Zumaya. It moves with a grim rhythm, light, and darkness locked in a desperate dance, pulling you down into its twisted maze. At the center, a fragile figure known as The Wanderer (Brooks Ginnan)  clutches a glowing egg—something abstract, something with no clear meaning, but bearing the weight of existence itself. His footsteps echo through warped corridors and slanted walls, a labyrinth spun from fevered dreams and old-world architecture.

Along this harrowing path, he meets spectral figures, each one a distorted mirror of humanity’s worst traits: greed, lust, avarice, plague. A woman with eyes like black pools caught in a web; a man with a grin stretched too far; faceless beings peering through windows, a corrupt tycoon in his sharp suit. Each step draws him deeper, the maze tightening, shadows stretching long. His fixation grips harder, until it becomes clear—there’s no escape. The walls press in, the light turns harsh, and the maze devours him whole—an endless pursuit of emptiness where emptiness reigns.

“The inspirations behind this video are very obviously from silent films of the 1920s,” says the Muted Widows team. “Thematically and aesthetically that felt natural when we were first approached by She Past Away with the song Inziva, but what was most important to us was exploring the incredible and expressive performances seen in those early days of cinema. Bringing together a small group of close friends and collaborators, each with unique talents and personalities and who all share an understanding of our process allowed for a dynamic energy to form creating a piece of work that feels simultaneously classic and contemporary.”

Familiar frames flicker from classics like The Spider’s Web, The Wicker Man, The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari, Nosferatu, Pandora’s Box, Doctor Strangelove, Metropolis, and The Man Who Laughed. There are sly winks to early 20th-century legends—Josephine Baker’s signature coiffure and décolletage; Fritz Lang’s vision, Louise Brooks’s seductive moves, Theda Bara’s vamp allure, and the lethal charm of real-life femme fatale Mata Hari.

Each nod, a tribute to a bygone era of bold artistry and haunting elegance, carries echoes of an age when cinema dared to stare into the abyss and find beauty.

She Past Away took root in 2006 when Volkan began penning songs without a name to call the project. By 2009, the band took form, and their debut EP Kasvetli Kutlama dropped in 2010, paving their path with its unique gloom. The first album, Belirdi Gece (2012), caught ears with its deep, brooding tone. They followed up with their landmark album Narin Yalnizlik (2015). By 2019, Disko Anksiyete emerged—more dance-driven, yet still carrying that eerie undertone. Marking a decade of their existence, the band released X in 2020, offering fans reimagined takes on their tracks from a slew of artists.

Mit “Murder Act” wird am 23. September 2024 das neue Album der Thrash / Groove Metal-Band SOULRIDE erscheinen. Es ist nach zwei EPs das erste Album der aus Polen stammenden Band, die sich inzwischen im englischen Coventry niedergelassen hat.

“Murder Act” wurde von Gitarrist und Sänger Aleksander Sadowski gemixt und gemastert und mit einem Cover-Artwork von Piotr “Szataniec” Szafraniec (u.a. für WARDRUM tätig ausgestattet). Bursting forth like sparks from a shattered power line, DILDOX is the brainchild of Sofia Alieninova and Davey Shook, the audacious synth-punk agitators out of Los Angeles. Since 2022, they’ve been jolting the West Coast with their high-voltage brand of electro-industrial mayhem, delivering lyrics that whip between English and Russian and sketching a world in perpetual chaos—where fire and ice are always on a collision course, each force bent on annihilation.

But with their track “Devilish,” it’s evident that DILDOX have chosen their allegiance—the blaze. This song is for those who would strike a deal with the devil himself to thaw a heart gone cold. It speaks to that raw, almost primordial feeling where hatred has frozen the soul, and the promise of flames holds an irresistible allure. Underpinned by a relentless industrial synth beat and vocals that snarl with a feral intensity, calling to mind Alien Sex Fiend, Ministry, and Christian Death, “Devilish” cuts through the icy fog of the coldwave scene like a blowtorch in a blizzard.

The video for “Devilish,” directed by Jane Slater and Glen Jennings, slices through the end of summer with a frosty edge. A haunting troupe of dancers moves like apparitions caught between this world and the next, with Sofia Alieninova commanding the scene as a demonic queen, leading her cast of devils and doomed souls with all the gravitas of a fallen monarch. It’s like Hieronymus Bosch crashing a drag show—twisted, theatrical, and laced with campy, vampy menace. Each frame straddles the line between nightmare and dreamscape, making it a perfect prelude to the eerie embrace of Halloween.

A remix of “Devilish” by MMDA will also feature on the forthcoming EP, Bound To Submit, a work that explores the dystopian future carved out by our current geopolitical and ecological crises, set to the pummeling rhythm of scorched earth gabber beats.

In Bound to Submit, DILDOX delves deep into the primal forces that still drive us, juxtaposed against the tightening grip of modern society. The EP poses a stark question: For all our technological advances, are we any less driven by the same survival instincts as our ancestors? Or are we just navigating an updated version of their savage terrain? It’s a thought-provoking contrast—the more the world changes, the more these age-old urges remain.

Ekko the Strange says his name tips its hat to life’s oddities. The artist’s journey began somewhere near the cobblestones of Warszawa, Poland, back in 2015. After a decade of crisscrossing the States, touring, and dropping records, Ekko felt the pull to step beyond familiar borders. Seeking fresh streets and new sounds, he left the USA behind, looking to reinvent himself and his music. Thirty countries and several battered analogue synths later, a new vision took shape—a sound that is both vintage and vicious.

From soft, velvet tones to gritty, biting synths—alongside 80s-soaked flanged guitars, unforgiving electronic rhythms, and vocals that echo with both depth and defiance—Ekko the Strange delivers a journey that bends the mind and stirs the soul with these sinewy, seething, cinematic anthems. It’s a soundtrack for the city after dark, where the night is both friend and foe. Coldwave, post-punk, dark electronics swirl together, a hat-tip to She Past Away, Clan of Xymox, and Bauhaus, wrapped in a moody, midnight melody.

Mystique (2022) carried a cool, collected air, borrowed from the strange thrill of travel, much like the enigmatic energy Bowie channeled in his Berlin days—where every street corner held a secret and every note felt like an invitation to wander deeper. Ekko the Strange spins a lush musical landscape with these three exciting remixes. This second act rolls out like twilight’s slow descent, reimagining the original tracks with brand new interpretations from Kontravoid and Ekko himself: seductive rhythms and haunting keys that pull you into the night’s embrace. These new interpretations are scarier, more ominous, and heavy on the dance aspects. It’s the perfect collection for a fog-filled goth club.

With Mystique (2022), Ekko conjured a collection that carried the cool detachment of a seasoned traveler—a work imbued with the spirit of wandering and wonder, much like Bowie’s fabled Berlin era, where every note was an open door to the unknown. In Mystique Remixes, Ekko shifts the atmosphere even further, casting a longer, darker shadow over his original compositions. This new suite of remixes, reimagined by Kontravoid and Ekko himself, drags the listener deeper into a world where seductive rhythms and eerie keys beckon like the flicker of a neon sign in a fog-filled alley. These tracks don’t just haunt—they possess, transforming dance floors into realms of ritual and reflection.

The Black Cat Remix of “The Concept” slinks into play with a hiss of drums and a menacing melody that could soundtrack some forgotten pagan rite, Ekko’s voice growling low and deep beneath. Meanwhile, Kontravoid’s take on “Reanimate” builds from ominous synth swells into a propulsive beat that feels like a darkwave descendant of “O Fortuna,” infused with a primal energy that electrifies every bassline and beat.

Then there’s the Black Cat Purr Remix of “The Concept.” Stripped of vocals, it’s somehow more insidious and direct. The absence of Ekko’s voice leaves a void that makes the creeping dread more palpable, turning the track into a sinister instrumental that prowls in the shadows.

After a global trek, celebrated Scottish troubadour John Douglas delivers a live acoustic rendition of his song Weightlifting. Don’t forget this text:

It’s been a banner year for Douglas, marked by a headline tour in the UK, the launch of his self-titled debut through Reveal Records, the impressive resurgence of Trashcan Sinatra’s Cake album in the Top 40 charts following its reissue, and the debut of a documentary film about Trashcan Sinatras.” This performance also offers a taste of Douglas’ upcoming Lost in North America Tour – Part One, providing an intimate look at the talent, charm, and depth that have solidified his place as a revered songwriter.

Weightlifting marks the second chapter in Douglas’s Me & Midnight Sessions. From Kilmarnock, Scotland, to Hartford, Connecticut, with detours through Japan, and a brush with the landed gentry in Ayr County Court, where their “banishment from honest toil” finally ended, Douglas and his crew surfaced with a landmark record. It’s an album brimming with introspective guitar ballads reminiscent of solo efforts by Pulp’s Richard Hawley, The Bible’s Boo Hewerdine, and The Fat Lady Sings’ Nick Kelly. Throughout the album, Douglas’s voice carries a tender, intimate quality, like a lullaby whispered in the quiet of night.

“It took us a long time to make that record due to various hilarious sidetracks,” quips Douglas. “We returned from all those adventures with songs of love, loss, redemption, forgiveness, bravado, friendship, wisdom, peace and tranquility. Songs that we swore ourselves to… and here we are twenty years on and it looks like we somehow built them to last. Somehow, from the chaotic depths, we found ourselves at the top of our game. It’s a miracle of a record.”

The video for Weightlifting was shot in a Glasgow flat, caught in the crossfire of a young couple’s fading love story. The air was thick with the quiet tension of a breakup, a place where memories were packing their bags, ready to leave. In this bittersweet setting, Douglas played his acoustic set to an empty room—a backdrop of soon-to-be-abandoned moments. The space, caught in that in-between of what was and what will be, gave his guitar a melancholic echo and his voice a raw edge, fitting for a tune that treads the line between heartache and healing.

“On the night of my filming, I had helped one of them move out the final pieces of furniture and accompanied them as they said goodbye to what they used to call home,” Douglas says. “I returned later, on my own, to the now empty flat… just before midnight… and filmed myself singing what felt like a very appropriate song. A bittersweet night that will hopefully allow a healing to begin and for pain to be left behind. I changed the lyric a little to suit the mood.”

Throughout October, Douglas takes to American stages, showcasing original material and new recordings of beloved Trashcan Sinatras’ material. He will be joined by Lily Vakili of Vakili Band and award-winning singer-songwriter Lauren Calve at various dates. Attendees of two special shows will be treated to guest appearances by fellow Trashcan Sinatras Frank Reader and Paul Livingston in Seattle.
