Seattle’s Painted Vein and MØAA have joined forces with a collaborative single and video for Kick That Desire, an intriguing song born from an impromptu jam session. Painted Vein is the brainchild of Seattle’s Andrea Fox Volpato, a musician, producer, and audio engineer with a storied background. Seattle’s MØAA is the brainchild of the enigmatic Jancy Rae.

Kick That Desire explores disillusionment and emotional turmoil, tracing the unraveling of promises and desires from a past relationship. Once-meaningful moments are now tinged with hollowness: grappling with the difficulty of cutting emotional ties while memories linger in silence. The tension between wanting to forget and the inability to move on is palpable, with heartache refusing to fade. Kick That Desire distills the weight of unfulfilled longing and the burden of unresolved attachment, resonating with the persistent ache of what could have been.

Painted Vein’s driving, pulsating guitar rhythms lay the foundation, mirroring the obsessive heartache MØAA channels in her vocals. The result is a track where longing feels both relentless and unshakable. Painted Vein not only delivers the instrumental pulse but also provides the spoken Italian outro, adding a layer of raw intensity.

The music video channels the aesthetic of classic horror, featuring frenetic movement through eerie locations—a dark forest, an abandoned schoolhouse, and a remote rural graveyard. It’s an unsettling homage to the unsettling, a visual echo of cinematic fear, with its rapid cuts and unsettling lighting evoke a sense of disquiet, with the desolate landscape serving as a backdrop for the tension.  Filmed and edited by IM DONE, and coloured by Alice Lorenzon, the video feels like a feverish journey through forgotten places, where every flicker of light and movement hints at something sinister.

“I’m thrilled to present the fifth single from The Obsession – and my fifth collaboration with the incomparable Alissa White-Gluz. Many of our songs together are inspired by or based on classic poetry, and ‘Ode to the West Wind’, drawn from Percy Shelley’s poem of the same name, is the latest addition to this thematic journey. Shelley’s poem reflects his admiration for the untamable force of nature and his thoughts on his own legacy. For the music video, we explored humanity’s impact on the natural world (spoiler: it’s not pretty) by reimagining iconic artworks like Caspar David Friedrich’s Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog and Raphael’s cherubs from the Sistine Madonna, only this time suffused with pollution, wings made of trash, and covered in toxic waste.

Auf KENNY WAYNE SHEPHERD ist Verlass! Nicht nur, weil er nochmal mit „Trouble Is… 25“ von 2022 nochmals in den Charts aufgetaucht ist. Er liefert mit seiner Band nun auch „Dirt On My Diamonds Volume 2“ ab. „Volume 1“ erschien vor gut einem Jahr. Ein cooles Album, wird „Volume 2“ nun ein liebloser Aufguss? Ha nein, weil auf KENNY WAYNE SHEPHERD ist Verlass!

KENNY WAYNE SHEPHERD liefert wieder coole Blues-Rocker mit feurigen Leads
So tritt „I Got A Woman“ mit coolem Groove gleich Popo. Man tänzelt direkt durchs Haus, zückt die Luftgitarre, SHEPHERD kann es aber besser mit seinen knackigen Leads. Auch seine Stimme kommt wie gewohnt sehr cool. Um sich dann im Wechsel der Songs das Mikro mit Noah Hunt zu teilen. Dessen herbere Stimme bringt wie gehabt eine dicke Portion Southern mit rein. Fette Bläser prägen „The Middle“. Zudem ist es schön, mal echten Gitarrensound zu hören, rein in den Amp und gut. Da quäkt ein altes Wah Wah, zum Mitsingen hat man sein “Ho Ho Hooo”. Singen darf ausführlicher WAYNEs Gitarre beim melancholischen Slow-Blues „My Guitar Is Crying“, so klingt gefühlsechter Blues.

Als kraftvoller Rocker kommt „Long Way Down“, passend wieder mit Hunt am Mikro. So kommt der Song wie ein Mix aus MOLLY HATCHET und rockigem JASON ALDEAN. Mit aufgeblasenerem Sound könnte auch „Never Made It To Memphis“ von dem Superstar aus Macon / Georgia stammen, vielleicht schimmert auch TOM PETTY etwas durch. Hier gibt es zudem schöne Vocals von Corinna Gill, was einen neuen Farbtupfer gibt. Die Leads haben hingegen eine gute Portion GARY MOORE. Die Bläser machen sich wieder breit, es groovt soulig, „Watch You Go“ hinterlässt auch mit den Lyrics ein fettes Grinsen. „Pressure“ kommt zappelig und funky, mit dem ZZ TOP-Oldie „She Loves My Automobile“ lässt es Wayne nochmal ordentlich krachen. Auch schon 55 Jahre alt, macht SHEPHERD mit seinen Jungs daraus einen fetten, zeitlosen Shuffle-Rocker und lässt die Gitarre ordentlich qualmen wie den Hot Rod „Eliminator“ unter Vollgas.

Das macht durchgehend Spaß, es gibt coole Vocals, natürlich feurige Gitarren, die Songs passen und sorgen für gute Laune. Die ist leider schnell vorbei, mit einer guten halben Stunde wären sicher noch ein bis zwei Songs mehr drin gewesen. So ist auch darauf Verlass: Der Finger geht direkt wieder auf die Playtaste!

Bay Area darkwave duo Yama Uba dropped a self-directed video for Shapes, a standout from their debut album Silhouettes on Psychic Eye and Ratskin Records. The iridescent dark post-punk track layers Winter Zora’s dreamy old-school guitar and sharp sax riffs over Akiko Sampson’s pulsating disco bass lines and plaintive vocals—a haunting mix of the intensity of Siouxsie Sioux with the raw energy of The Breeders’ Kim Deal and the gothic power of The March Violets and Cocteau Twins.

“When I wrote Shapes, it was about shapeshifting, and the pain that often catalyzes personal growth,” says Sampson. “It was about the vulnerability of intimacy, and unlearning feeling scrutinized as loved ones witness our messy processes,” Sampson states. “But when I compared that to the greater pain of no longer being able to change, it gave a different perspective. I remembered to be grateful for life in its full spectrum, which isn’t always beautiful.”

The video, a tribute to Oakland artist Ara Jo, who perished in the 2016 Ghost Ship Fire, combines the unsettling tension of Sampson’s Butoh with Jo’s abstract photography—her images laced with a flicker of whimsy and optimism.

Butoh, born in post-war Japan in the late 1950s, isn’t for the faint of heart. Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno built the theatrical dance form from the ground up, using slow, deliberate movements and twisted body shapes to confront the big taboos—death, desire, and trauma. It was Japan’s gritty answer to traditional dance and Western influence, a response to the wreckage of war and the ghosts left behind. Butoh isn’t about clean steps or graceful leaps. It’s raw, uncomfortable, sometimes grotesque—a mix of mime, madness, and performance art. Dancers, often painted bone-white, push their bodies to the brink, walking a fine line between beauty and brutality, daring you to look away, but knowing you won’t. It is a beautiful, profound homage to their friend’s memory.

Guitarist and saxophonist Winter Zora states, “The process of visualizing Shapes had a huge impact on us as artists,” says Zora. “We’ve seen it born and taken shape in so many ways to get to what it is today. We wanted to honor our friend Ara Jo in the video because she left a legacy of power and transformation in the Bay Area. Her artistic influence changed all of our lives, and the way we feel about the process of creation. We set out to capture what shapeshifting means to us, and realized along the way that the power within it holds its own consciousness.”

In Shapes, Yama Uba vocalist and video director Akiko Sampson performs eerie butoh dancing in black and white that embodies what Sampson describes as “the pain of change, alongside band footage in vivid colour.

Yama Uba was formed in 2017 by Sampson, and joined by Zora in 2020. In 2024, Yama Uba released their debut album, Silhouettes, on Psychic Eye and Ratskin Records, and toured the United States, Japan and Italy. Yama Uba will perform at Substance Fest in Los Angeles on November 2, 2024, followed by tours in the EU and Japan in 2025.

THE GATES OF SLUMBER veröffentlichen am 29. November 2024 ein neues Album, das selbstbetitelte “Gates Of Slumber”  ist die erste neue Platte der Doom Metal-Band seit der Veröffentlichung von “The Wretch” im Jahr 2011.

Mit “Embrace the Lie” haben GATES OF SLUMBER im September die erste daraus Single veröffentlicht, seit heute gibt es auch ein Video zu “Embrace The Lie”.

THE GATES OF SLUMBER wurden 1998 von Karl Simon gegründet. Im Jahr 2014, nach dem Tod des Bassisten Jason McCash, löste Simon die Band auf.  2020 holte das HELL OVER HAMMABURG Festival die Band zurück auf die Bühne, neben Simon gehören die ursprünglichen Mitglied Chuck Brown am Schlagzeug und Steve Janiak am Bass wieder zur Band.

The notion of “softness” traditionally implies gentleness, warmth, or even weakness – but not in the new song I Am Soft from Berlin songstress Cosey Mueller. To her, “soft” is not synonymous with fragility, but instead, a quiet strength. In choosing to embrace sensitivity over hardness, one must reconsider the power in vulnerability—where being soft doesn’t signal defeat, but rather an openness to life’s experiences – good or bad – without the armour of emotional rigidity or the status quo.

Mueller (DAS DAS, Glaas), a colourful figure in Berlin’s underground scene, blends electronic experimentation with a love for rock ‘n’ roll. Her debut album Interior Escapes (2021) and follow-up Irrational Habits (2023) showcase her talent for fusing repetitive synth melodies, explosive beats, and expressive vocals. Known for her playful use of language, Mueller creates music that feels both nostalgic and futuristic, suspended between time periods.

I Am Soft, with the minimalist staccato synth stylings and detached vocal delivery of early Mute bands like DAF and The Normal, and  delves into a recurring meditation on vulnerability, contrasting it with the more rigid aspects of life. The lyrics repeatedly assert softness, positioning it against the hard edges of existence, be it in relationships, finances, or moments of intoxication. Despite the weight of external pressures, softness persists – maintaining a steady, almost defiant acceptance of life’s complexities, even in excess and at the edge of mortality.

The video plunges into the playful, hedonistic heart of Berlin’s underground, where latex-clad revelers, adorned with oversized ears, indulge in whipped cream straight from the can and paint one another with abandon. It conjures echoes of Soft Cell’s Sex Dwarf, celebrating the absurdity and joy within the darker corners of the night. Here, amidst the debauchery, even the wildest creatures embrace a softer, sillier side—proving that in the thick of chaos, softness has its place.

In Tišina, the latest release from Berlin-based Serbian dark synthpop duo Sixth June, the frigid stillness of winter is rendered into a delicate yet disquieting sonic experience. Laslo Antal and Lidija Andonov conjure an atmosphere where introspection reigns. Their signature blend of haunting melodies and ethereal vocals lingers in the air like frost on a cold morning. Andonov’s voice, at once soothing and heavy with the weight of the world, floats effortlessly over Antal’s icy synth arrangements.

The lyrics depict a contemplative journey where the speaker dreams of a name amidst a nocturnal setting, symbolizing a quest for identity or understanding. They describe removing a blindfold to confront the darkness, seeking to perceive all that passes by, driven by a desire for knowledge. The recurring theme of silence calling and shattering dreams suggests an internal struggle between the pursuit of understanding and the disruptive nature of silence.

The video for Tišina unfolds like a series of stolen moments, grainy as if captured by a forgotten security camera. Its aimless vignettes drift through a city that feels both familiar and distant, a landscape of fleeting details: a slow ride up an escalator, a restless street scene, idle wandering through shops. The small, seemingly mundane moments take on a quiet weight, punctuated by wistful glances and anxious pauses. It’s a portrayal of modern urban ennui, the kind of slow burn where even stillness feels charged with something unsaid.

Die Death / Thrash Metal-Band MOLDER hat nach dem eröffnenden Titeltrack mit “Bursted Innards” eine zweite Single ihres kommenden Albums “Catastrophic Reconfiguration” veröffentlicht. Es ist nach “Vanished Cadavers” (2020) und “Engrossed in Decay” (2022) das dritte Album der US-Amerikaner aus Illinois und wird am 8. November 2024 via Prosthetic Records erscheinen.

“Catastrophic Reconfiguration” wurde mit einem Cover-Artwork von Julian Felipe Mora Ibañez ausgestattet. Die Aufnahme erfolgte gemeinsam mit Matthew Aguilar, während Greg Wilkinson (AUTOPSY) für Mix und Mastering verantwortlich zeichnete.

Zuvor hat die Band mit “Psychotic Banana” den Titeltrack mitsamt Video-Clip veröffentlicht. Der Song thematisiert den universellen Kampf mit der Abhängigkeit und schildert die anfängliche Verlockung, die anschließende Euphorie und Wut sowie das darauf folgende Chaos.

Ende letztes Jahres ist mit “We’ve Built The Line” eine weitere Single mitsamt Video-Clip erschienen. Der Song untersucht die persönlichen und gesellschaftlichen Auswirkungen von emotionalen und ideologischen Spaltungen und sei eine Reflexion über die menschliche Tendenz, emotionale Barrieren zum Selbstschutz zu errichten.

Vor einigen Wochen ist mit “Destroy The Line” eine weitere Single mitsamt Video-Clip erschienen. Der Song ist Teil einer Reihe von Singles, die in einer imaginären apokalyptischen Welt spielen, die von einer rücksichtslosen Macht der Superreichen beherrscht wird.

“Wir haben dieses Lied als Metapher für die heutige Gesellschaft geschrieben”, sagt Sängerin Melissa Bruschi. “Es liegt an uns, alle Vorurteile zu zerstören, die uns trennen, und unsere Stimmen gegen die Ungerechtigkeiten zu erheben, die wir jeden Tag sehen. Es ist unsere Pflicht, für unsere Rechte zu kämpfen, und wir müssen es alle gemeinsam tun, um eine bessere Zukunft zu schaffen.”

Mit ihren bisherigen zwei Alben haben UNTO OTHERS (ehemals IDLE HANDS) für viel Furore und Aufsehen gesorgt. Die Musik der Band aus Portland fasziniert auch weiterhin durch ihre Mischung. Auf der einen Seite klingt es nach klassischem Gothic Rock und Wave (liegt u.a. auch am Gesang), auf der anderen Seite nach traditionellem Heavy Metal. Die Musik eignet sich zum Abrocken zu hause, animiert zum Tanzen im Düsterschuppen deiner Wahl, nimmt dich mit auf einen düsteren Road Trip oder regt zum Nachdenken an einem regnerischen Tag an.

Mit dem Opener „Butterfly“ und dem Song „Raigeki“ gab es bereits vorab einen Einblick in das neue Album. Sehr gute Stücke, die den Stil von UNTO OTHERS perfekt widerspiegeln. Mit dem Produzenten Tom Dalgety (Ghost, The Cult) will man auf „Never, Neverland“ den nächsten Schritt gehen. Dass dieser nach zwei in der Szene sehr erfolgreichen Alben nicht einfach ist, haben schon viele Bands feststellen müssen. Ob UNTO OTHERS diesen erfolgreich gemeistert haben? Schwierig zu sagen, denn so richtig aus den Socken gehauen haben mich die meisten neuen Songs nicht. Die beiden genannten sind meine Favoriten. Den Rest kann man gut hören, aber der Kick, den die ersten Alben zu bieten hatten, den spüre ich beim Hören der neuen Tracks nicht mehr. Auch nach mehreren Durchläufen wartet man immer noch auf etwas besonderes. Vielleicht sind die Songs zu glatt gebügelt oder es fehlen die berühmten Ecken und Kanten? Ich weiß es noch nicht.

Trotz dieser Einwände, „Never, Neverland“ ist ein richtig gutes Album geworden, keine Frage. Es ist für mich nur im Vergleich die schlechteste aller Veröffentlichungen von UNTO OTHERS. Vielleicht ein Übergangsalbum, mal schauen. Freuen darf man sich als Fan trotzdem und vielleicht habt ihr ja einen anderen Eindruck beim Hören. (eller)

Mit “Black Scream” präsentieren TEMPLE OF DREAD den dritten und letzten Vorab-Song  ihres kommenden Albums. Die neue Platte der norddeutschen Death Metal-Band heißt “God of the Godless” und erscheint am 4. Oktober 2024 via Testimony Records.

„Keiner unserer anderen Songs klingt mehr nach Slayer als ‘Black Scream’, unsere Liebe zu den Thrash-Legenden aus der Bay Area ist hier offensichtlich. Eigentlich sollte dieser Song ursprünglich eine Hommage an die floridianischen Death-Metal-Veteranen MASSACRE sein. Der Text von „Black Scream“ dreht sich um ein weiteres Opfer des Trojanischen Krieges: Philoctetes. Dieser tapfere Krieger wurde von seinen Mitstreitern im Stich gelassen.“

Zuvor teilte die Band ein Lyrics-Video zu “Sacrificial Dawn”. Markus Bünnemeyer verrät, wer bei “Sacrificial Dawn” als Gastsänger zu hören ist:

„Unsere zweite Single ‘Sacrificial Dawn’ handelt vom Trojanischen Krieg und von tapferen Kriegern, die den Spielen und Intrigen der Götter zum Opfer fallen. Troja… das blutige Troja. Der Song ist musikalisch bewusst sehr einfach gehalten. Außerdem ist er groove-getrieben und rhythmisch. Wieder einmal unterstützt uns unser guter Freund Marc Grewe (ex-MORGOTH, INSIDIOUS DISEASE– und ASINHELL) mit seinen Vocals. Marcs Schreie sind so einzigartig, dass es selbst für uns manchmal schwierig ist, zu erkennen, ob er oder Jens singt. Was für ein brutales Dreamteam!“

Anfang Juli teilten TEMPLE OF DREAD ein Video zu “Carnage Ritual”, zur ersten Single schrieb die Band:

” ‘Carnage Ritual’ erinnert an die musikalischen Anfänge der Band, kommt ohne Kompromisse und Experimenteaus und liefert einfach vier Minuten Volldampf “, sagt Gitarrist Markus Bünnemeyer. “Der Text beruht auf griechischer Mythologie: Das Volk von Athen wurde vom kretischen König Minos gezwungen, sieben junge Männer und sieben junge Frauen dem Ungeheuer Minotaurus – halb Mensch, halb Stier –  zu opfern – als Vergeltung für den Tod seines Sohns. Für die Visualisierung dieses Stücks zeichnet erneut der ecuadorianische Regisseur Christian Kdrumworm verantwortlich, der die Details des atemberaubenden Artworks von Paolo Girardi mit viel Liebe zum Detail gestaltet hat!”

Die finnische Metalcore-Band BALANCE BREACH hat mit “Antidote” – mit Philip Strand (NORMANDIE) eine neue Single veröffentlicht.

Zuvor hat die Band mit “Million Miles Away” eine weitere Single mitsamt Video-Clip veröffentlicht. Der Song erforscht das Thema von unvermeidlichen Trennungen und dem damit verbundenen emotionalen Aufruhr.

“Dieser Song war eine inspirierende Herausforderung für uns, wegen des lyrischen Themas und des allgemeinen Gefühls, das wir mit dem Song ausdrücken wollten. Wir hatten keine Angst, unseren Sound in Richtung eines berührenderen und hier und da sogar etwas poppigeren Sounds zu erweitern, weil der Song das wirklich verlangte”, erklärt Gitarrist Terho Korhonen.

Im Februar ist mit “Maniacs” eine weitere Single mitsamt Video-Clip erschienen.

“Ich denke, dass der Text und der Song eine großartige Hymne für alle ist, die einen extra Schub und Adrenalin brauchen, wenn es an der Zeit ist, aufzustehen und den inneren Wahnsinn zu entfesseln”, sagt Sänger Aleksi Paasonen.

IRON MAIDEN wollen kommendes Jahr die “spektakulärste und aufwändigste Show aller Zeiten” auf die Bühne bringen: Die “RUN FOR YOUR LIVES WORLD TOUR” startet am 27. Mai 2025 in Budapest, es folgen 27 Stadion-, Festival- und Arena-Shows in Europa. Die Heavy Metal-Band CHALLENGER hat nach dem Opener “Imperial Madness” mit “Victims of War” einen zweiten Track ihres kommenden Albums “Force of Nature” veröffentlicht. Es ist das erste Album der Slowenen aus Ljubljana, die 2019 mit der EP “Turned to Dust” debütierten.

Ein neues Album haben SUBWAY TO SALLY angekündigt: “Post Mortem” erscheint am 20. Dezember 2024 via Napalm Records auf CD, Vinyl sowie digital und enthält 13 Songs. Ihre 15. Platte ist auch eine Folge der positiven Resonanz auf dem Vorgänger “Himmelfahrt” (2023), wie die Potsdamer erklären:

“Eigentlich hatten wir insgeheim für uns beschlossen, dass ‘HIMMELFAHRT’ unser letztes Kapitel sein würde. Doch die Energie und Leichtigkeit dieses Albums sowie eure überwältigend positiven Reaktionen haben unsere Kreativität neu entfacht.”

Eine neue Single hat die Formation noch nicht ausgekoppelt, allerdings wird nun auch die ehemalige Standalone-Single “Eisheilige Nacht” Teil des Werks sein.

Im Dezember gehen SUBWAY TO SALLY auf ihre traditionelle “Eisheilige Nacht”-Tour. Mit dabei sind WARKINGS, THE O’REILLYS & THE PADDYHATS sowie HARPYIE (Termine s. unten).

Sängerin CHARLOTTE WESSELS hat ihr neues Album “The Obsession” für 20. September 2024 angekündigt. Kurz vor Release folgt jetzt das Musikvideo zum Stück “Ode To The West Wind”, an dem auch ARCH ENEMY-Frontfrau Aliisa White-Gluz mitwirkt.

Zum vierten Preview-Song “The Crying Room” steht ebenso ein Clip bei YouTube bereit. Auch “Dopamine” kann man sich dort ansehen. Unterstützt wird Wessels hier von Kollegin Simone Simons (EPICA).

Mit “Chasing Sunset” hat die Musikern zuvor einen weiteren Clip veröffentlicht. Einen Höreindruck verschafft außerdem die Single “The Exorcism”, zu welcher Wessels auch ein Musikvideo produziert hat.

Für “The Obsession” arbeitete die Musikern mit einer kompletten Band zusammen: Gitarrist Timo Somers, Bassist Otto Schimmelpenninck van der Oije und Schlagzeuger Joey Marin de Boer teilten sich bereits mit CHARLOTTE WESSELS während ihrer Zeit in DELAIN die Bühne. Komplettiert wird das Line-up von Pianistin und Orgelspielerin Sophia Vernikov.

“The Obsession” erscheint via Napalm Records auf CD, Vinyl sowie digital und wurde von Guido Aalbers gemischt. Das Mastering hingegen übernahm Andy VanDette. Über die Platte hat CHARLOTTE WESSELS Folgendes zu sagen:

„Einerseits erzählt dieses Album eine sehr persönliche Geschichte – durch sein unbeabsichtigtes Thema der Angst, der zwanghaften Gedanken und der Flucht vor ihnen – und gleichzeitig repräsentiert es die Freude, mit allen, die an der Entstehung dieses Albums beteiligt waren, die wahren Formen der Songs zu finden. Deshalb habe ich The Obsession als Titel gewählt. Er bezieht sich auf meine persönlichen Herausforderungen mit OCD, die viele der Songs inspiriert haben – aber ich habe auch begonnen, die Band als The Obsession zu bezeichnen – weil es Momente im Studio mit ihnen gab, die mich wirklich daran erinnert haben, warum ich überhaupt besessen davon bin, Musik zu machen.“

Subliminal influence is a shadowy trick, slipping past the front door of your mind while you’re busy at the back. It’s the kind of subtle push that makes you think you’ve made a choice- but really, the decision was made for you before you even knew it. And now, with AI sniffing around the edges of self-awareness, the stakes are much higher. Machines that know too much are like crooks who’ve learned the safe combination. Once they get inside, who’s to say they won’t change the rules of the game? The real danger isn’t in what they know…but in what they make you forget.

Steilacoom slinks out of San Francisco with their new single Subliminal Soundtrack (out now via Vibraphone Records), a post-punk number as sharp as broken glass and just as dangerous. Steilacoom’s got the grit and guts to stand out in a city that knows a thing or two about gloom. Subliminal Soundtrack is modern, it’s moody, and it hits like a hammer. With nods to Bauhaus, Nine Inch Nails, and Interpol, frontman Dave Han’s baritone growls like thunder over Rob Hanson’s hypnotic synths and Daniel Ward’s reverb-soaked guitar lines. Their music cuts deep, marrying brooding lyrics with a wall of shimmering, atmospheric noise.  This is the band’s first release since their 2023 EP Teatro Luminoso.

“Subliminal Soundtrack is a cautionary reminder about subliminal influence and the dangers of AI self-awareness,” says Dave Han.

“Dave and Rob already had a solid backbone to the song when I first heard it,” adds Daniel Ward. I wanted to put down guitar that did their work justice and channeled the raw, visceral energy of the guitarists I love—like Daniel Ash and Wayne Hussey. The results speak for themselves. This is one of our best songs to date and I’m so glad we got to work with director Kristin Coffer and videographer Bailey Kobelin to make a great video for the tune.”

Coffer shot the band on a dimly lit stage, draped in flickering Op-Art and glitchy static that buzzed like the background hum of a broken radio. It’s the kind of tech-trickery that feels like it’s eating away at the edges of your mind. But through the flicker and fuzz, the band’s camaraderie cuts through clean, with Han’s hypnotic presence holding court like a boxer in the ring—steady, strong, and daring you to blink first. It’s raw, real, and just glitchy enough to make you wonder if the machine might be thinking too hard.

Das Black Metal Project ERSHETU bringt im Winter den Nachfolger des Album “Xibalba” (2023) raus: Die neue Platte heißt “Yomi”und erscheint am 8. November 2024 via Debemur Morti Productions.

Wie beim Debüt spielte Vindsval (BLUT AUS NORD, FORHIST) Bass und einige Gitarre ein, auf “Yomi” ist er zudem als Sänger zu hören.

Das Album wurde von V. im Earthsound Studio aufgenommen und gemischt und von Bruno Varea im Upload Studio gemastert. Das Artwork/Design stammt von Maciej Kamuda.

THE CROWN stellen mit einem Video zu “Gone To Hell” die zweite Single vom kommenden Album “Crown Of Thorns” vor – und Gitarrist Marko Tervonen rechnet damit, dass der Song für Irritationen sorgt: “Ich rechne damit, Dinge wie ‘was ist das für softer Kram?!’ zu lesen”. Den Song haben Tervonen und der ex-THE CROWN-Bassisten Magnus Olsfelt zusammen geschrieben – eine Premiere. Marko Tervonen berichtet dazu:

„Gone To Hell’ ist ein ganz besonderer Song. Wer unsere älteren Alben kennt, weiß, dass es eine ganze Reihe von Songs, bei denen die Musik von ‘Olsfelt/Tervonen’ stammt. Das heißt aber nicht, dass wir die Songs zusammen geschrieben haben. Es war eher so, dass Magnus einige Riffs von mir ‘übernommen’ hat, von Songs, die es nicht auf die Alben geschafft haben. Er hat die besten Sachen zusammengeklaubt und sie in seine Songs eingebaut. Bei ‘Gone To Hell’ haben wir zum allerersten Mal wirklich zusammen einen Song geschrieben. Magnus zeigte mir die grundlegenden Riffs des Songs auf dem Bass. Wir haben ihn mit einem Metronom aufgenommen und dann habe ich sozusagen seine Idee übernommen. Ich fügte die Melodien hinzu, arrangierte ihn, entwickelte das Schlagzeug und den Gesang usw. Es war also eigentlich der einzige Song, an dem wir zusammen gearbeitet haben, bevor er die Band verließ. Der Song ist eher im Mid-Tempo-Bereich angesiedelt; er hat fast schon Post-Punk-Elemente. Ich persönlich liebe ihn und bin sehr stolz auf ihn!“

“Gone To Hell” ist die zweite Single vom kommenden Album  “Crown Of Thorns”, das am 11. Oktober 2024 erscheint. Bereits im August  hat die Band ein Musikvideo zur Single “Churchburner” produziert.

Mit der neuen Scheibe wollte man sich aus der eigenen Komfortzone wagen und einen Schritt nach vorne tätigen, erklärt Gitarrist Marko Tervonen, was die Formation zu einem neuen Ansatz bewegte:

„Wir wollten wirklich, dass es wie ein neues, frisches Album klingt, und ich glaube, das ist uns gelungen. Ich hatte die Idee, dass wir ein wenig zurückgehen sollten, um etwas Neues zu versuchen. Ich drängte darauf, das Artwork schon sehr früh im Prozess zu entwerfen. Wir wollten, dass das Albumcover eine Brücke aus unserer Heimatstadt Trollhättan namens ‘Strömkarlsbron’ enthält. Darauf befindet sich diese coole Statue namens ‘Strömkarlen’ [ein Wassergeist]. Es machte Sinn, das Ganze mit der Stadt zu verbinden, in der alles begann; wie die meisten Leute wissen, hießen wir einige Jahre lang Crown of Thorns, bevor wir den Namen abkürzen mussten. […]

[Doch] welche Art von Musik braucht dieses Artwork? Ich wollte etwas wirklich Schnelles, Melodisches, Schweres, Episches, Punkiges… Bereiche, die wir schon vorher berührt haben, aber auf ein neues Niveau heben. Und ein paar Überraschungen einzubauen war auch Teil des Prozesses.“

“Crown Of Thorns” erscheint am 11. Oktober 2024 via Metal Blade auf CD, Vinyl sowie digital. Das Artwork gestaltete Giannis Nakos.

Die Heavy Metal-Band MYSTYC BLADE hat einen Labeldeal bei Wormholedeath unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen wird das französische Solo-Projekt von Christophe Danjon das neue Album “The Master Is Inside” veröffentlichen. Es ist nach der 2023er-EP “Stay Away” das erste Album des Musikers. Release-Termin ist der 18. Oktober 2024. Vorab gibt es nach dem Track “Feel Invincible” mit “Turn the Page” nun auch ein Lyric-Video.

Love and heavy metal have always had a rocky romance, with the former frequently claiming the crown in pop’s parade of passions. Things get trickier when black metal steps into the ring, a realm where hate lurks as prominently as melancholy in a blues ballad. The genre’s grim grip on negativity clutches tightly. Where pop croons about love lost and found, black metal snarls and scowls, creating a discordant dance between emotion and aggression.

Boezem, the debut LP from Dutch quintet Vuur & Zijde, dives into the delicate dance of conditional and unconditional love with a grace that sidesteps heavy metal’s ho-hum habits. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill metal fare. Instead, it explores the liberation of intimacy and the role of motherhood, all without recycling the tired tropes of the genre. Despite their black metal roots and affiliations with bands like Laster, Nusquama, and Grey Aura, these Dutch players have deviated from their previous split-album with Impavida. They’ve ditched the drab clichés for a sound that’s both fresh and profound.

As Vuur & Zijde evolves from a trio to a quintet, the band breathes fresh air into their music, blending influences with a delicate touch. The shift is subtle but significant, ushering their sound into the shifting sands of post-black metal. Whirling drum assaults and buzzing guitar riffs retain the genre’s grim essence, while a second dimension emerges through inspirations from post-punk pioneers like Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance. Synthesizer swells and Famke’s enchanting vocals add a dreamy layer to their palette. Her lyrics, written in Frisian and Dutch, whisper tales from the coastlands up to Denmark, creating a blend of atmospheric allure and melodic mystery.

With Boezem, Vuur & Zijde masterfully melds contrasting forces. The harsh edges of black metal, now twisted into post-black metal, clash with the delicate allure of shoegaze, post-punk, and wave. These elements entwine in an eternal embrace, conjuring tunes that are as enchanting as they are prickly—a sonic symphony akin to a black rose. This interplay of intensity and tenderness gives rise to a new musical landscape, where beauty and barbs dance together in a provocative performance.

Boezem by Vuur & Zijde

Vuur & Zijde spoke with Post-Punk.com about the album, the band’s evolution, their influences, and the choice to perform in Frisian.

Can you tell us about how the band formed and whether there were difficulties going forward from right after the beginning of 2019, having the world come to a stop just as you signed with Prophecy Productions?

Nicky: Famke and I made music together before, somewhere in our twenties. The vibe was there, but it didn’t result in something tangible. In early 2019, we started talking about making music again. I still had some unused songs from my old solo project ‘Reiziger’ and after asking Richard to do the drums, we recorded our split with Impavida. As much as I like what we did there, working on new material felt rather lonely and my heart just wasn’t in it. Feeling I needed a change in direction, I asked Sylwin and Carmen to join me in the writing process. I’ve always felt at ease and inspired around those two, and I’m very happy with how they brought their own characteristics to this band.

Having the world come to a halt of course heavily influenced Boezem. We had to cancel our sessions in a studio abroad and find a place that we could easily and safely record. It also changed the writing process, as it was difficult to come together and shape the music collectively. Still, I don’t see these changes as something negative but as a way of adapting to the unforeseen circumstances.

How has the band changed and evolved since the release of the split with Impavida?

Nicky: While I think our music still focuses on atmosphere, I feel that there’s a different energy in the new material. It’s gloomier, more rock-ish.

Famke: As it’s the five of us now, instead of the lonely three we started out with, there’s more influences and input trickling through the songs. The three tracks on the split LP were written for an explicit black metal project, whereas the new album is a cooperative effort, without boundaries regarding genre or style. Our love for black metal still echoes throughout this record, but we’ve taken the liberty to include other musical passions of ours as well, and it makes for a more complete record, with reference to who we are.

Your debut album, Boezem, focuses on themes of conditional and unconditional love, intimacy, and motherhood. What inspired you to explore these topics within the context of a genre that usually doesn’t address more feminine aspects of existence? 

Famke: The lyrics were written as a cathartic form of personal expression, in a period of grand upheaval where a lot of fundamentals were swept away beneath my feet. I sort of had to invent a new version of myself. This all happened within frameworks of love and trust, although it was never the intention to write about the expected or unexpected. These “unusual” topics were not something we were purposefully looking for, but always existed alongside us.

I definitely see a post-punk influence in songs like the first single “Zusterzon,” “II,” and especially “Nest.” The single “Naakt,” stands out as also having a strong Cocteau Twins vibe. What post-punk band records did you listen to when you were growing up? 

Nicky: Cocteau Twins and Oingo Boingo had an enormous influence on my earlier musical development. Later, acts like The Chameleons and also more modern bands like Ascetic: found their way in my collection.

Famke: I’m still growing up, but I had the privilege of my mother introducing me with acts like Swans, The Cure and Sinead O’Connor at an early age.

Which albums and songs hold special meaning for you and inspired the music of VUUR & ZIJDE and the songs on “Boezem”?

Nicky: Oof, that’s a tough one. I feel that a little bit of ‘Pink Turns to Blue by Hüsker Dü snuck into ‘Omheind’. There’s also a strong Jesu-vibe in the beginning of II and, in ways, Vuur & Zijde expands on the more post-punk-ish elements of my other band Laster.

To us, this album sounds more like old-school gothic rock and ethereal post-punk than black metal. Bands like Killing Joke and Fields of the Nephilim have crossover in the metal scene, as do some of the more Baroque elements of Dead Can Dance. Do you think there is a natural crossover between genres here?

Nicky: I think there’s always a natural crossover possible between genres, as this is how they are formed in the first place. Gloomy music inspires gloomy music, so yes, I’d say the gap between those genres isn’t too big. The more music you listen to, the easier it gets to spot similarities between genres, and the more adventurous it becomes to play with those elements.

Is there a particular song on the album that holds special meaning for you? If so, why?

Famke: Kuier was written at a turning point in my life. It was the moment I found out how to put myself above a certain difficult plight – an exploration in maturing, if you will. Zooming out of the situation, taking an overview of your life, and eventually moving on. Also, I really appreciate Nicky’s and Sylwin’s spoken word adaptation of my lyrics for this song.

What motivated you to include the Frisian language in your lyrics, and how do you think it enhances the overall feel of the album?

Famke: Frysk is my mother tongue. For me writing about matters close to the heart is done best in the language I dream in, thus it enhances the expressiveness of the lines. Also, the subdued phonology of the Frisian language lends itself beautifully for vocals. Curiously, initially more songs on the record were written in Frysk, but during the demo stages we decided to translate these to Dutch, to make them open to collaboration.

What role do you think music plays in dealing with profound life experiences like the ones you’ve gone through, and how do you hope your music will impact your listeners?

Nicky: Music – as many other forms of cultural expression – helps us to broaden our experiences. Many artists have stimulated me to look at big topics in a broad variety of ways, adding – presumably unintended – depth and color to them. Also, it’s nice to have a little soundtrack in your life, to help you jam through its rougher parts.

Die französische Depressive Suicidal Black Metal Truppe NOCTURNAL DEPRESSION hat mit “Waltzing Among Graves” eine neue Single samt Video auf YouTube veröffentlicht.

Der Titel wird Teil des neuen Albums “Perpétuelle Eclipse” und erscheint am 26,. September 2024 via Ars Macabra Audio. Das achte Album der Franzosen wird sechs neue Tracks enthalten. Außerdem feiert die Band ihr 20 jähriges Bestehen und veröffentlicht den gesamten Backkatakolog neu. Gemixt und gemastert wurde die neue Scheibe von Alessandro “Algol” Comerio.

Wie immer gibt sich die Band sehr bedeckt bzgl. der Details zum neuem Release. Einziges permanentes Mitglied ist Sänger und Gitarrist Lord Lokhraed, der seit 2013 noch von Lead Gitarrist Avskrius unterstützt wird.

“Stay strange and pure at heart!”
Swedish post-punk provocateurs THEN COMES SILENCE unleashed Trickery, their mighty seventh release, earlier this year through Metropolis Records—a moody milestone that marks their musical evolution. Trickery celebrates friendship, unity and the feeling of belonging to a group of kindred spirits. Now, THEN COMES SILENCE flicker across the silver screen with a striking new video for Stay Strange, featuring the affable Dusty Gannon—often known as Goth Dad—from Athens, Georgia’s adored outfit, Vision Video. The collaboration crackles with charisma, bringing together two torchbearers of the contemporary goth revival to celebrate the strange and the sublime.

Dusty Gannon created the Goth Dad persona, a humourous blend of goth aesthetics and the quirks of a 1950s sitcom dad. Often appearing on social media in classic goth attire, Goth Dad offers “dad advice” and light-hearted takes that mix goth subculture with everyday life. His charm lies in the contrast between his dark look and his friendly, dad-like demeanor.

A former firefighter and Army veteran, Gannon uses Goth Dad to connect with fans, offering a mix of humor and comfort. The character resonates widely, addressing topics like mental health, sharing goth fashion tips, and giving “goth advice” with wit and warmth. Goth Dad’s self-aware humor and endearing style, often punctuated with his signature phrase, “Stay strange,” have made him a beloved figure in the alternative music community.

While on their last tour, THEN COMES SILENCE frontman Alex Svenson found inspiration in Gannon’s larger-than-life personality and that of his alter ego.

“‘Stay Strange!’ is the call that Dusty Gannon shouts after every show,” explains Svenson of the song’s chorus chant. “When we returned home from our last tour with them, I began working on the song and made it a tribute to the post-punk/goth scene. It was also a natural choice to invite Dusty to sing the chorus.”

The video for Stay Strange flickers between a gothed-up Alex Svenson and Dusty Gannon, interspersed with raw live footage from their US tour last spring. It’s a striking snapshot, playing on the stark contrast between THEN COMES SILENCE’s brooding intensity and Vision Video’s more theatrical flair. The result is a playful yet potent pairing, blending serious post-punk poise with a macabre, tongue-in-cheek twist that fans of both bands will relish.

To capture the raw energy of their live performances, Trickery was swiftly recorded over a mere three days at Stockholm’s Kapsylen Studio. With Jonas Fransson’s driving punk rhythms and Hugo Zombie’s inventive guitar work, the spotlight remains firmly on Svenson, whose velvety vocals evoke echoes of the late Michael Hutchence.

Captured over three days at Stockholm’s Kapsylen Studio by Jörgen Wall (Jay-Jay Johanson, The Hellacopters), this album was skillfully mixed by Tom van Heesch. The finishing touch came from Svante Forsbäck of Chartmakers.
