Die Progressive Metal-Band EGRES hat mit „Retrieval“ eine neue Single mitsamt Video-Clip veröffentlicht. Der Song erforscht die Auswirkungen von Erinnerungen und Erinnern auf die menschliche Wahrnehmung des Glücks des gelebten Lebens.

Zuvor haben die Finnen mit „Introspection“ (2022) ein Album veröffentlicht.

Wie lebt es sich im Schatten eines Giganten, eines menschenabweisenden Monolithen, der nach Lust und Laune viele von denen tötet, die mit ihm spielen, der über die Häupter der Menschen ragt und ihnen so zeigt, wie klein und unbedeutend sie sind? Die Eiger-Nordwand, eine 1.800 Meter hohe steingewordene Verheißung für diejenigen, die todessehnsüchtig nach der größten Leistung ihres Lebens streben, ein Witwenmacher, ein Archetyp für die Hybris des Menschen: Viele Geschichten hat diese Route geschrieben, und mehr als 70 davon endeten mit dem Tod der Protagonisten. Die aus dem Kanton Bern stammenden AARA haben nun nach dem Studium gotischer Horrorliteratur den Blick gehoben und setzen dem Berg vor ihrer Nase nun ein musikalisches Denkmal.

Für „Eiger“ erfinden sich AARA keineswegs neu, sondern stülpen dem neuen Konzept ihren Signature-Sound über, stilistisch eher subtil angepasst, das wird schon am Intro deutlich: „Die das wilde Wetter fängt“ startet mit einem atmosphärischen Intro von Jonny Warren (MODERN RITES), eben wie es sich im Zuge der „Melmoth“-Trilogie bewährte, und fährt sich nach anfänglicher Raserei vor einem letzten Finale komplett runter, bevor es episch und sehr melodiös endet. Auch „Senkrechte Welten“ atmet den Größenwahn des Heldentums mit seinen ausufernden Harmonien, erschöpft sich, tritt zurück von der Raserei, wie die bittere Einsicht, irgendwo am Ende der sogenannten Mordwand nicht mehr weiterzukommen – das Ziel in greifbarer Nähe, doch unerreichbar, bis der Fall in die Tiefe einem letzten Rausch gleichkommt.

„Eiger“ bietet mehr Dynamik in Komposition, Performance und Produktion: AARA legen Wert auf ein ausgewogenes Klangbild.
Ebenso solche Bilder erzeugen AARA mit „Eiger“ eine knappe Stunde lang, auch ausgehend von Michael Handts unglaublich tollem, realistischen Artwork. Somit ist das sechste Album der Band auch ihr bisher längstes, und dank des neuerlichen Fokus auf Dynamik, erschöpft es sich auch kaum. Mit dem vermutlich besten Stück des Albums „Felsensang“ kreieren AARA Drama, Stolz und Trauer, und bleiben trotz vieler verschiedener Abzweigungen nachvollziehbar. Die Emotionalität der Musik ist hier mit am stärksten spürbar, doch wird in „Der Wahnsinn dort im Abgrund“ wieder spürbar, was bei AARA seit jeher am meisten unter die Haut geht: Raserei, überzogen mit zwingenden Melodien und intensiven Vocals. Ausgerechnet diese Direktheit wirkt im letzten Drittel des Albums („Zurück zur roten Fluh“, „Grausig ist der Blick“) manchmal etwas erzwungen, weshalb die Band hier stellenweise droht, ihr Publikum zu verlieren. Doch vielleicht ist es auch der Höhenrausch, den das Album in dieser gegen Ende zu verdeutlichen versucht.

Verglichen mit der schroffen, psychedelischen Welt von PAYSAGE D’HIVERs „Die Berge“ und UNGFELLs roher Unberechenbarkeit in „De Ghörnt“, wählen AARA einen prosaischen Ansatz: „Eiger“ bietet musikalisches Storytelling auf hohem Niveau, etwas das die Band spätestens seit „En Ergô Einai“ perfekt beherrscht. Doch die acht Songs von „Eiger“ könnten auch einem ganz anderen Konzept dienen, die Verbindung zur Bergwelt muss man bewusst suchen, aller Windsamples zum Trotz. Das Vereinnahmen des Konzepts in Musik schaffen PAYSAGE D’HIVER allein schon mit Vocals, die wie Felsenstürze klingen, und genau solche Details sind es, die AARA gebraucht hätten. Dass AARAs Sängerin Fluss nicht von Chören oder ähnlichen Stilmitteln unterstützt wird, lässt die Gesangsseite von „Eiger“ im direkten Vergleich etwas blass wirken. Immerhin: Bergs vielschichtige Kompositionen haben sich dahingehend geändert, als dass die akustischen Gitarren einen wunderbaren Kontrast zur furiosen Seite der Musik ergeben und gleich hier einiges aus.

Eine eher prosaische Verbindung zur Bergwelt: AARA begreifen sich auf „Eiger“ als Storyteller und erzeugen nur wenige Klänge, die die Bergwelt im inneren Auge entstehen lassen.
Vielleicht gibt es keine Gelegenheit, sich grundsätzlich neu zu definieren, bei dem Tempo, das AARA nach wie vor an den Tag legen, vielleicht ist es auch nicht nötig. Selbst wenn dieses Mal mehr als anderthalb Jahre Zeit vergangen ist, die Sturm-und-Drang-Zeit der Band ist noch nicht vorüber. Ja, „Eiger“ ist ein dynamischeres Album, verglichen mit den vorherigen Arbeiten von AARA – das liegt zum Teil an Markus Stocks Mix, der weniger brachial und etwas rauer ist, was gerade beim Drumsound ein großer Vorteil ist und vor allem die Toms haben einen tollen Hall. Aber auch die Songs dürfen mehr atmen und drängen nicht nur rasend in einer Richtung, wie es gerade bei „Triade II: Hemera“ an die Grenze zur Erschöpfung ausgereizt wurde.

Dass das Songwriting zwischendurch nicht immer mitreißen kann und die simple, intensive Raserei nicht immer mit den vorherigen Alben mithält, sortiert „Eiger“ hinter „Triade III: Nyx“ und „En Ergô Einai“ ein, aller Verbesserungen zum Trotz. Doch das ist Jammern auf hohem Niveau: AARA präsentieren sich auch 2024 in sehr guter Verfassung und machen einen deutlichen Unterschied zum Rest einer Szene, der Maskerade wichtiger als Inhalt ist. Somit ist es sicherlich nicht die Ehrfurcht, im Schatten eines solchen Giganten zu leben, der AARA davon abhält in Stereotype abzugleiten, eher ist es ein Quell der Inspiration vor der eigenen Haustüre. Da kann man nur sagen: Mission geglückt – wieder einmal.

Hardcore–Thrash aus Las Vegas: SPIRITWORLD haben mit „Western Stars & The Apocalypse“ eine neue Single inklusive Video veröffentlicht.

SPIRITWORLD-Frontmann Stu Folsom offenbart, wer ihn zu dem Song inspirierte. Durchaus eine Überraschung:

‚Western Stars & The Apocalypse‘ habe ich gleich nach der Veröffentlichung unseres 2022er Albums ‚Deathwestern‘ geschrieben, als wir von einer Europatournee mit AGNOSTIC FRONT nach Hause kamen. Auf dieser Tour habe ich in meiner Koje viel Bob Dylan gehört, und im Text gibt es eine Anspielung auf seinen Song ‚Desolation Row‘.“

2025 sollen weitere Neuigkeiten rund um SPIRITWORLD folgen. Zeitgleich zum letzten Album „Deathwestern“ (2022) veröffentlichte Stu Folsom das Buch „Godlessness“ , eine Sammlung von Horror-Western-Kurzgeschichten. Inspiriert sind die Storys zu gleichen Teilen vom Western-Pulp von Louis L’Amour, den Romanen von Cormac McCarthy und dem Horror von Clive Barker. Das Buch kann quasi als Sekundärliteratur zu den beiden SPIRITWORLD-Alben „Pagan Rhythms“ und „Deathwestern“ gesehen werden.

Eine neue Single haben ELVENKING veröffentlicht: „Throes Of Atonement“ steht als Lyric-Video bei YouTube bereit und läutet das letzte Kapitel der „Reader Of The Runes“-Trilogie ein, wie die Formation erläutert:

„‚Throes of Atonement‘ spiegelt einen großen Teil der Atmosphären und der Stimmung dieses dritten und letzten Kapitels der ‚Reader of the Runes‘-Konzept-Trilogie wider. Es ist eine Hommage an den epischen Power Metal der 90er Jahre, ein bedeutender Einfluss für unsere frühen Tage in einem Maße, dass es fast aus unserem ersten Album ‚Heathenreel‘ stammen könnte.

Dieses Album taucht in die Vergangenheit der Charaktere in dieser Geschichte ein und enthüllt die Gründe für den Zorn des Lesers (Reader) der Runen im vorherigen Kapitel. ‚Throes of Atonement‘ konzentriert sich auf zwei Charaktere und erforscht jugendliche Eifersucht und Engstirnigkeit, die schließlich zu Hass und Verrat führen. Für all das zugefügte Leid, ob absichtlich oder unabsichtlich, waren die endgültigen Strafen Buße und Tod.“

A fresh current in experimental electronic music surges forth under the guise of Inertia Her. This French-American music producer and photographer has swiftly carved a singular space in the underground scene, his work a daring invitation to escape the mundane. He describes his sound as “a bridge to escapism,” and it feels like stepping into a world untethered by convention. His latest offering, the EP Glasgow Dance, is a fascinating deep dive into the human psyche.

Glasgow Dance strides in with a syncopated beat, sharp and deliberate, carrying the unmistakable air of Bauhaus. The bassline broods beneath, its tension palpable, while whispered words drift like a chill wind over unsettling atmospherics. Ghostly synths emerge, their presence both fragile and unnerving, threading through the track with hypnotic precision. The rhythm trudges forward, deliberate and unyielding, as the gossamer synths swirl, weaving unease into every note—a track that feels both grounded and spectral, a march through something uncanny and otherworldly. Alice begins with a gentle step, its percussion bouncing with measured restraint, drawing the listener into its understated rhythm. Hushed vocals hover, each phrase curling like smoke, delicate yet deliberate. It feels like slipping into another realm, where time stretches and the senses sharpen, its sensual pull evoking the brooding elegance of Massive Attack.

Following this, Ceremony delivers an unsettling spoken-word piece, sparse and spectral, its minimal instrumentation conjuring an air of disquiet. The words linger, like echoes in a cavern, each syllable reverberating with tension. The finale, Skins, drifts further into the strange and whimsical. Whispered vocals pair with bubbling synths, atmospheric whooshes, and whistles that dart and dance unpredictably. It’s a track as curious as it is enchanting, closing the sequence with a surreal yet playful flourish. Together, these pieces form a journey that feels fragile yet fearless, intimate yet untamed.

“I create to provoke,” says Inertia Her. “ My tracks are paintings. Abstract and messy, meant to be loved, hated, or leave you confused. Art isn’t about comfort; it’s about reaction.”

Kraftwerk’s 50 Years of Autobahn tour is poised to electrify North America in 2025, marking half a century since their seminal Autobahn album and their 1975 U.S. debut. Ralf Hütter and the legendary electro pioneers are set to traverse 25 cities, delivering their acclaimed multimedia performances—a synthesis of music, visuals, and performance art that embodies their “Gesamtkunstwerk” ethos.

The tour kicks off in March, winding through Philadelphia,  Boston, New York, Miami, Atlanta, Nashville, Chicago, Denver, Vancouver, Austin, and more, culminating with a stop at Coachella.

The announcement came with a sleek video featuring skateboarding icon Tony Hawk, a surprising but fitting nod to the band’s enduring cultural relevance.

Formed in 1970 by Ralf Hütter and the late Florian Schneider, Kraftwerk initially experimented with avant-garde approaches as an art collective. By the mid-1970s, they achieved fame with their innovative electronic style, influencing electro, hip-hop, and techno.

Kraftwerk’s lyrics intricately wove themes of post-war European urban life and technology, encapsulating experiences like car travels on the Autobahn, train journeys, and the use of home computers. Deeply influenced by the modernist Bauhaus aesthetic, they viewed art as fundamentally intertwined with daily life. Their lyrics, often minimalistic, skillfully balanced an innocent appreciation and a subtle caution regarding the modern world. This lyrical approach not only played a key role in the rhythm of their songs but also delved into the paradoxes of modern urban existence.

Kraftwerk’s songs frequently highlighted the simultaneous sense of alienation and the joy that modern technology brings, presenting a complex, multifaceted view of contemporary life. Their use of synthesizers and drum machines, in turn, revolutionized music. In 2019, Kraftwerk were nominated into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and were finally inducted in 2021. The band recently completed a groundbreaking nine-show residency at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the esteemed home of the LA Philharmonic. Earlier this week, Kraftwerk were among the first wave of artists confirmed for the inaugural Forever Now Festival, the sister festival to Cruel World.

For the 50 Years of Autobahn tour, expect an immersive audiovisual experience, where Kraftwerk’s groundbreaking soundscapes meet pulsating visuals, resonating with the same innovation that transformed them into icons of electronic music. With Autobahn as its beating heart, this tour is both a celebration of legacy and a forward-facing acknowledgement of Kraftwerk’s timeless influence.

Die Gothic Blues-Band JAYE JAYLE hat mit „Bloody Me“ einen zweiten Track ihres kommenden Albums „After Alter“ veröffentlicht.

„“Bloody Me“ ist ein Zeugnis für diejenigen, die sich entschieden haben, ihr Leben nicht nach dem Stereotyp des kapitalistischen Kalenders zu leben. Ich muss mir nicht vorschreiben lassen, wann und wie ich das, was ich liebe, mit denen, die ich liebe, feiern kann. Ich tue mein Bestes, um jeden Tag zu feiern“, sagt Sänger Evan Patterson.

Es ist das fünfte Album der US-Amerikaner aus Kentucky rund um Evan Patterson. Release-Termin ist der 31. Januar 2025 via Pelagic Records.

In a world where even the most familiar rules feel imposed and where meaning itself can be stripped away, Dutch new wave revivalists Pol emerge as suave shape-shifters of sound and style. Fronted by siblings Ruben and Matthijs Pol, the duo captures the spirit of an era defined by transformation and technological tension. Drawing inspiration from visionaries like Visage, Gary Numan, and Japan—while echoing the legacy of New Order, Depeche Mode, and Duran Duran—their work transcends mere homage. Instead, Pol repurposes these influences to carve out a singular identity that honors the fleeting nature of words and the persistent resonance of feeling. Their music blurs boundaries, remixing aesthetics and emotions until they become something raw, direct, and vividly new.

Pol’s latest single, The Chameleon, slithers into existence with a strict mechanical symmetry, each synthetic pulse igniting like a flickering neon sign in a deserted metropolis. The beat settles into a hypnotic groove, as angular guitar phrases strike through the sterile atmosphere. Synth leads slice cleanly through the mix, their precision as cold as a surgical scalpel, while a brooding bassline crawls beneath, lending weight and unease.

Vocals hover in a detached, otherworldly monotone, processed until they seem robotic—an eerie chorus of humanity filtered through steel and static. Distortion and reverb stack up, evoking empty halls and invisible crowds, while subtle electronic whispers simmer in the periphery, hinting at restless, mechanical life lurking just out of sight.

This dystopian shimmer evokes the bleak futurism of Gary Numan’s Replicas, where electronic landscapes and tense minimalism coexist in understated menace. Yet, within these shadows, Pol forges its own path, channeling the chameleonic energy of reinvention.

The lyrics follow suit, wrestling with upheaval and the desire for metamorphosis. The chameleon stands as a symbol of liberation through transformation, shedding its skin to resist societal expectations. Fleeting French phrases emerge like secret signals, injecting duality and dissonance, confronting confinement with defiance. What emerges is a new language of sound and meaning, perpetually shifting and evolving.

All songs from Pol’s repertoire are written and produced by Ruben and Matthijs, with select mixes shaped by Dave Bascombe (Depeche Mode, Tears for Fears, Erasure) and the duo themselves. Their self-titled debut EP, released in August 2023, solidified their place in the modern revival of analog-driven synth music.

In June of 2024, they unveiled Masks, a single that distills the idea of concealment—masks donned to hide longing, meet social demands, or protect tender inner worlds. This release heralds yet another phase in Pol’s evolution, where each new track peels back another layer.

Away from the studio, Ruben and Matthijs infiltrate the high-fashion sphere, modeling for luxury brands like Saint Laurent, Gucci, Fendi, Valentino, and Dior. Their music, too, graces the runways, forging a seamless bond between their sonic identity and the fashion world’s avant-garde vision.

Mit „Refuse Resist“ wird am 6. Dezember 2024 via Armageddon Label das neue Album der Hardcore / Punk-Band SEEIN RED erscheinen. Es ist der erste neue Release der Niederländer seit über sechs Jahren. Aufgenommen wurde das Album bereits 2021 in einer dreistündigen Aufnahme-Session.

„Auf der Plattenhülle von „Refuse Resist“ steht überall Antifa, denn wir leben in einer Zeit, in der rechtsextreme Politiker und Parteien immer mehr an Macht gewinnen und sogar nationale Wahlen gewinnen, wie es die PVV in unserem Land getan hat. Dieser Rekord ist ein Spiegelbild dieses Rechtsrucks. Die Konturen des Faschismus, die wir derzeit sehen, sind eine Form des Kapitalismus, der sich in einer akuten Krise befindet und zerfällt. Er stützt sich auf Hyper-Nationalismus, offene Gewalt, Staatsterror, Bigotterie, Ungerechtigkeit und extreme rassistische Sündenböcke. Wir werden angegriffen, und wir müssen aufstehen und uns wehren! Die meisten, wenn nicht sogar alle Texte auf dieser Platte handeln von diesem Kampf, von der Politik der Arbeiterklasse und von der rasanten Beschleunigung der Ausbeutung in dieser kapitalistischen Gesellschaft. Es ist eine verdammt politische Platte und ein geballter Gruß an die Underground-DIY-Punk-Gemeinde“, erklärt die Band.

Die Modern / Alternative Metal-Band ENEMY INSIDE veröffentlicht am 28. Februar 2024 ihre neues Album „Venom“ via Reigning Phoenix Music auf CD, Vinyl sowie digital.

Reinhören ist bereits seit einiger Zeit möglich, inzwischen gibt es mit einem Video zu „Don’t Call Me An Angel“ den fünften Vorab-Song.

Zuvor stellte die Formation die Single „Fck That Party“ vor – der Track enthält ein Feature von CLAWFINGER-Sänger Zak Tell. Die Nummer folgt auf „Should Have Known Better“ und „Sayonara“, das in Form eines Videoclips bei YouTube abrufbar ist. Zuvor veröffentlichte die Gruppe das Musikvideo „What We Used To Be“. Sängerin Natassja Giulia erklärt den Inhalt des Stücks:

„‚What We Used To Be‘ erzählt von einer Beziehung, die sich Stück für Stück auflöst: Sei es eine romantischer Art, eine Freundschaft oder die Beziehung zu sich selbst. Es geht darum, festzustellen und zu akzeptieren, dass sich Situationen und Menschen, auch man selbst, verändern und es meist keine andere Lösung gibt als weiterzuziehen.“

Anfang 2025 sind ENEMY INSIDE auf Tour, als Support spielen LETTERS SENT HOME.

Mit „Volume Six“ wird am 24. Januar 2025 via High Roller Records das neue Album der Thrash Metal-Band SACRIFICE erscheinen. Es ist – entsprechend dem Titel – das sechste Album der Kanadier aus Toronto, die sich bereits Mitte der 80er-Jahre als Band formierten.

„Alle vier Originalmitglieder sind bei „Volume Six“ dabei“, sagt Sänger und Gitarrist Rob Urbinati. „Wir können uns glücklich schätzen, dass wir alle noch dabei sind. SACRIFICE ist die letzte der klassischen Thrash-Bands, bei der die Originalbesetzung intakt ist.“

Höher, schneller, weiter? Gerade im Power Metal scheint das nicht die schlechteste Strategie zu sein, wo ein gesundes Maß Kitsch und dick aufgetragene Darbietungen anno 2024 ein nicht zu unterschätzendes Publikum finden. Deshalb haben FROZEN CROWN zunächst alles richtig gemacht, als sie 2023 mit Alessia Lanzone eine dritte Gitarristin in ihren Reihen begrüßten. Den Bombast und die Epik generieren die Italiener schließlich vorwiegend an den Saiten, während begleitende Synth-Spuren im Hintergrund die Lücken füllen.

Die Fanfaren, Bläser und Konservenstreicher tragen wie im Opener „War Hearts“ natürlich zur Gesamtatmosphäre bei, spielen hinter den flinken Riffs und Soli allerdings stets die zweite Geige. Insbesondere wenn das Trio Mondelli, Bellomo und Lanzone die Muskeln spielen lässt, tragen FROZEN CROWN einen Hauch DRAGONFORCE in sich, was sich zwar seltener in aberwitzigen Instrumental-Eskapaden äußert, aber mitunter nicht unähnliche Melodiebögen hervorbringt.

Catchy und energiegeladen setzt „War Hearts“ somit auf vergleichsweise knackige Songstrukturen, welche Giada „Jade“ Etro als Fundament für ihre kraftvolle Singstimme dienen. Dass die Frontfrau in einem etwas tieferen Register unterwegs ist, als wir es oftmals von Genrekollegen gewöhnt sind, irritiert nur anfangs etwas.

Was indes deutlich stärker ins Gewicht fällt, ist der gleichförmige Ansatz, mit dem FROZEN CROWN gut 43 Minuten durch „War Hearts“ pflügen. Weder großartige Variationen im Tempo noch der Intensität rauben der Platte die bitter nötige Dynamik, so dass es dem Sextett gerade in der zweiten Hälfte zusehends schwer fällt, unsere Aufmerksamkeit zu halten. An der Qualität von Stücken wie „I Am The Wind“ liegt das isoliert betrachtet weniger: Es fehlen schlicht die frischen Akzente, die das ausladende „Ice Dragon“ mit seinen folkig angehauchten Melodien erst viel zu spät einzustreuen sucht.

„War Hearts“ kann sein Potenzial nicht gänzlich entfalten
Das hält „War Hearts“ unweigerlich zurück, obgleich eine Hymne wie „On Silver Wings“ auch UNLEASH THE ARCHERS kaum besser inszenieren könnten. Dass also die eingangs erwähnte Strategie im Endeffekt zu wörtlich genommen wurde, ist ein wenig ärgerlich: Gerade bei der Abwechslung schwächeln FROZEN CROWN, was dem Album und den teils überaus gelungenen Gitarren-Arrangements mit zunehmender Spieldauer die Faszination raubt.

Die Dissonant Death Metal-Band CROWN OF MADNESS hat einen Labeldeal bei Transcending Obscurity Records unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen werden die Kanadier ihr neues Album „Memories Fragmented“ veröffentlichen. Es ist nach zwei EPs und einer Split das erste Album des Duos, welches aus Sunshine Schneider und Connor Gordon besteht und das Album – bis aufs Mastering, welches in den Händen von Stu McKillop bei Raincity Recorders lag – auch selbst produzierte. Die Progressive Metal-Band MASTORD hat nach „Villi“ mit „Kaarne“ einen zweiten Track ihres kommenden Albums „Lemmon Lintu“ veröffentlicht. Es ist nach „Trail of Consequence“ (2019) und „To Whom Bow Even the Trees“ (2021) das dritte Album der Finnen.

„Lemmon Lintu“ erzählt von einer Begegnung zwischen einem Menschen und einem Raben im Rahmen der Rabenmythologie. Erscheinen wird das Album am 14. Februar 2025.

Im kommenden Jahr feiern die beiden Festivals ROCK AM RING am Nürburgring und ROCK IM PARK in Nürnberg großes Jubiläum: 40 Jahre am Ring und 30 Jahre im Park sollen gefeiert werden. Die Open Airs finden vom 6. bis 8. Juni 2025 statt und punkten mit einer Neuerung: Erstmalig soll das Programm auf vier statt der bislang gewohnten drei Bühnen stattfinden, wobei ein Line-up von 100 Acts in Aussicht gestellt wird.

Den ersten davon haben die Organisatoren schon im Juni verraten: SLIPKNOT füllen 2025 einen der drei Headliner-Slots. Mit einer ersten Bandwelle hat man anschließend auch den zweiten davon befüllt: BRING ME THE HORIZON spielen im neuen Jahr exklusiv bei ROCK AM RING / ROCK IM PARK. Exklusiv gebucht hat man auch SLEEP TOKEN. VOIDFALLEN bringen ihr zweites Album raus: „The Rituals of Resilience“  erscheint am 24. Januar 2025. Mit „Branding of Souls“ hat die Band nun einen zweiten Video-Clip veröffentlicht.

Mit einem Video zur Single „Pyre of Vengeance“ hat die finnische Melodic Death Metal-Band vor einigen Wochen schon den ersten Song geteilt und erklärt, wovon er beeinflusst ist:

„Der energiegeladene und dynamische Song verbeugt sich vor dem finnischen Melodic Death Metal der frühen 2000er Jahre, hat aber gleichzeitig den typischen VOIDFALLEN-Sound. Der Song handelt vom Widerstand und davon, für seine Überzeugungen einzustehen.“

Am 8. Juli 2024 um 17 Uhr startete der Karten-Vorverkauf für das ROCKHARZ OPEN AIR 2025 – stattfinden wird das Festival vom 2. bis 5. Juli 2025 in Ballenstedt. Zu den Headlinern der kommenden Auflage zählen neben POWERWOLF auch HEAVEN SHALL BURN.

Nun teilte das ROCKHARZ Anfang Dezember 16 weitere Bands für das Event mit. Es spielen KING DIAMOND, FLOGGING MOLLY, DRAGONFORCE, ABBATH DOOM OCCULTA (100% IMMORTAL-Songs), FROG LEAP, SOULFLY, SOLSTAFIR, MR. HURLEY & DIE PULVERAFFEN, RHAPSODY OF FIRE, AVATARIUM, MEMORIAM, DRACONIAN, DESERTED FEAR, BOKASSA, DEFECTS und DELIVER THE GALAXY.

Mit einer zweiten Bandwelle gesellten sich im Oktober 2024 zwölf weitere Acts zum Line-up hinzu. Es spielen IN EXTREMO, SAXON, ALL THAT REMAINS, ANY GIVEN DAY, PRIMAL FEAR, VISIONS OF ATLANTIS, GREEN LUNG, APRIL ART, GRAND MAGUS, FROZEN CROWN, VELVET RUSH und SEASONS IN BLACK.

A lotus eater drifts into myth from Homer’s Odyssey, a figure lost in the fog of indulgence. On their fabled island, the lotus blooms—a fruit laced with lethargy and sweet forgetfulness. To taste it is to abandon ambition, to let life’s demands dissolve like mist. Odysseus’ men, seduced by its softness, sink into stillness, their will to wander sapped, their journey arrested. In its broader breath, the lotus eater has become a symbol of surrender—one who trades toil for tranquility, swapping purpose for pleasure. Detached, adrift, they embody the allure of escape, standing at odds with the grind of reality. The lotus eater myth mirrors today’s culture of instant gratification, where social media and quick pleasures encourage escapism, detachment, and complacency, replacing ambition with fleeting contentment and lowering expectations for deeper fulfillment.

The Horrors resurface with their own Lotus Eater, a kaleidoscopic prelude to their forthcoming album, Night Life. This track shivers with crystalline synth patterns and a dense, atmospheric haze, conjuring echoes of Brian Eno’s innovation, the brooding experiments of Scott Walker’s later years, Deerhunter’s layered intricacies, and Bowie’s reflective brilliance in Blackstar. Refusing the pull of predictable pop, the band unfurls a sound that bends and twists, tethered to emotion yet untethered by convention.

Born from a process of relentless reinvention, Lotus Eater grew darker and more intricate with each iteration. The lyrics, steeped in the reflective lyricism of the Pet Shop Boys and laced with the contemplative musings of Alan Watts, grapple with time’s unyielding progression. Memories dissolve like mist, the past an ephemeral echo in the mind’s winding halls. Loss and renewal entwine, urging a bold step away from nostalgia’s grip and into the promise of what lies ahead.

“Lotus Eater has had several past lives,” said Badwan in an Instagram post. “It was one of the first songs from the Night Life sessions that we felt really excited about – Rhys’s original lyric had a feeling that made me think of 5 Years by David Bowie, and I started to build on the idea. A lotus eater lives in a state of blissful ignorance, and the song to me describes the moment of coming back to reality. We wanted it to have a feeling of both melancholy and euphoria, letting go of the past and starting again. The spoken word section was improvised in the studio, and the mid-section of chopped-up electronics came from Amelia’s world of synth programming. It feels almost like a sister track to Sea Within a Sea in some ways, and it’s one of our favourite songs on the new album.”

This is The Horrors at their boldest, layering abstraction with clarity, drawing listeners into a world where time, memory, and transformation collide. Lotus Eater resonates with the restless beauty of change, a hymn to letting go and embracing the inevitable flux of existence. Listen below – and purge those demons!

Night Life is The Horrors’ first LP since 2017’s V and the 2021 EPs Lout and Against the Blade, marking the first time The Horrors step forward without their original lineup—absent are keyboardist Tom Furse and drummer Joe Spurgeon. In 2021, the Southend stalwarts announced their shift to a four-piece after Furse decided to step away, stating he’s “more of a maker than a performer,” leaving the rigors of touring behind.

Faris Badwan and Rhys Webb began crafting demos in Webb’s North London flat, the foundation of a record later shaped in Los Angeles with Yves Rothman, known for his work with Yves Tumor and Blondshell. Hayward’s guitar scrawled its final strokes back in London, with Kidd contributing from afar.

“The Night Life here is not the vim and vigour of pubs and clubs,” says the band. “It’s the thoughts that happen under the cover of darkness; the places your mind takes you when the rest of the world is asleep.”

The band’s sixth album showcases a refined roster: Faris Badwan’s brooding baritone still leads, with Rhys Webb’s bass rumbling beneath, while Joshua Hayward’s jagged guitar lines slice through. New blood comes from Amelia Kidd’s atmospheric keys and Jordan Cook, formerly of Telegram, on drums. Their sound, now sharper with experience, reflects both maturity and melancholy.

In 2021, Nashville’s storied music scene birthed a strange and stirring experiment. She Comes in Colors, led by Lenny Bryan, stitched together a collision of dream pop’s ethereal sweep and the brooding, industrial pulse of Violator-era Depeche Mode and NIN’s sharp-edged shadows.

The band’s latest single, Medicine, with vocalist Monica Moment, plunges headlong into the push and pull of desire and despair. Addiction’s grip is painted in sharp relief, where fleeting highs collide with the churning depths of regret and disorientation. The song pulses with an urgency that feels electric—less a lament, more a late-night thrill ride through neon-lit streets slick with sin and sweat.

Moment’s voice smolders, a siren song luring the listener deeper into the vice-given rhythm. The relentless pull of “medicine” teeters between seduction and surrender, a comfort that swiftly curdles into chaos. It’s a dance-floor anthem where pleasure and peril sway together, an ouroboros of longing and loss, spinning endlessly to its own sultry beat. Think Lady Gaga meets Massive Attack on this one. Medicine isn’t soft; it’s searing—more slick city night than pastoral daydream, where the classic and contemporary lock arms and blaze into the dark.

“Whatever our respective “medicine” may be, it tends to lead or tempt us toward our destination,” says the band. “We may celebrate or lament its power, but in either case, we submit.”
