Die Blackened Deathcore-Formation MENTAL CRUELTY präsentiert ihre neue Single „Helheim“ mit einem Clip bei YouTube. Das Stück soll die Entwicklung des vorangegangenen Werks „Zwielicht“ (2023) vorantreiben und mehr schwarzmetallische Elemente und sogar Folk-Anleihen in den Bandsound einbinden. Als Gast ist außerdem David Dimonich (SIGNS OF THE SWARM) zu hören.

MENTAL CRUELTY erklären die Entstehung des Tracks:

„’HELHEIM‘ ist ein weiterer Meilenstein auf unserem Weg vom harten Deathcore zu melodischerem, blackened Metal. ‚ZWIELICHT‘ war unser Übergang vom Deathcore zu einem Sound, der sich auf unsere blackened Seite konzentriert, sowie auf traditionelle ‚Metal‘-Einflüsse und sogar Folk. Dieser Song geht noch einen Schritt weiter, indem er ein skandinavisches Saiteninstrument namens Talharpa einbezieht. Die Jungs mussten dieses neue Instrument sogar lernen, um es im Studio aufnehmen zu können!

Natürlich wollten wir auch etwas Deathcore beibehalten, also haben wir für den Breakdown unseren Freund David Simonich von Signs of the Swarm eingeladen, mit dem wir morgen eine knallharte Nordamerika-Tournee starten. Der Song ist angemessen brutal für einen Song, der vom Reich der Wikinger handelt, die es nicht ganz nach Walhall geschafft haben, dem Jenseits für die Entehrten.“

LUNATIC SOUL, das Solo-Projekt von RIVERSIDE-Sänger und -Bassist Mariusz Duda, steht ab sofort bei InsideOut Music unter Vertrag. Das achte Studioalbum des Musikers wird am 31. Oktober 2025 erscheinen, die dritte Single „The New End„ist ab jetzt als Video zu sehen. Ebenfalls reinhören ist in „The Prophecy“ möglich.

Mit dem Titeltrack „The World Under Unsun“ steht weitere neue Musik bereit – produziert wurde das Album von Magda und Robert Srzedniccy.

Mariusz Duda erklärt zum Stück:

„So wird das neue Lunatic Soul Album beginnen. Genau mit diesen Klängen. Der Track ‚The World Under Unsun‘ ist eine Art Vorspann zu einem langen, 90-minütigen Musikfilm, der im Herbst erscheinen wird. Dieser Film ist das achte Lunatic Soul-Album. Auf der Zeitachse der Geschichte ist er zwischen ‚Fractured‘ und ‚Walking on a Flashlight Beam‘ angesiedelt. Dunkelheit und Melancholie kehren in meine Musik zurück – dieses Mal in das schwarz-goldene Licht einer verfinsterten Sonne getaucht. Ich habe ein episches, langes und sehr vielfältiges Album aufgenommen – das erste Doppelalbum in meiner Karriere. Ich wollte keine aus dem Zusammenhang gerissenen Fragmente präsentieren. Ich wollte einfach zeigen, wie diese Reise beginnt. Ich hoffe, dass euch das Stück gefällt und dass ihr mich im Herbst auf dieser langen Reise begleiten werden“.

 LEPROUS veröffentlichen am 24. Oktober 2025 das Livealbum “An Evening Of Atonement” via InsideOutMusic. Einen Höreindruck verschafft der Mitschnitt „Atonement / The Sky Is Red (Outro)“ bei YouTube.

Für das Album schnitten die Norweger ihr Konzert am 7. Fenruar 2025 im Poppodium 013 im niederländischen Tilburg mit.

LEPROUS blicken zurück auf das Konzert und erinnern sich:

Im Januar 2025 begannen wir, die bislang größten Konzerte unserer Karriere zu geben und traten in ausverkauften Konzerten in europäischen Großstädten auf. Wir wollten ein Spektakel bieten und spielten jeden Abend in zwei Sets Songs aus unserem Backkatalog, kombiniert mit unserer bisher größten Produktion. Der Höhepunkt war „An Evening of Atonement“ – live aufgenommen im wunderbaren 013 Poppodium in Tilburg.
„Melodies of Atonement“ war eine Entwicklung für Leprous – wir haben die orchestralen Elemente, die die letzten Alben geprägt hatten, hinter uns gelassen und uns stattdessen darauf konzentriert, wie WIR als fünf Musiker zusammen klingen – fokussierter, eindringlicher und roher. Diese Songs auf der Bühne zu spielen, war aufregend – und eine spezielle Setlist zu erstellen, die sich durch die verschiedenen musikalischen Veränderungen unserer Karriere zog, war eine spannende Herausforderung.

Die vorherige Auskopplung „Sacrificial Slaughter“ ist ebenfalls in Bild und Ton abrufbar.

„Survival Protocol“ist das neunte Album der Deutschen, das Konzeptalbum erzählt die Geschichte eines unbekannten Helden, der eine nukleare Apokalypse überlebt. Die Erzählung begann bereits auf dem Album „Annihilation of Mankind“ und knüpft an „Homo Deus“ an: Der wahre Schöpfer steigt vom Himmel herab, und der epische Kampf um die Vorherrschaft auf dem Planeten beginnt. Die Menschheit ist fast ausgelöscht, nur eine Handvoll Überlebender kann ins All fliehen. Nach einer langen Reise entdecken sie einen bewohnbaren Planeten und beginnen, ihn zu kolonisieren. Die Ereignisse dieser Reise werden in den Tracks von „Survival Protocol“ erzählt.

„Survival Protocol“, das von Gitarrist und Sänger Lukas Swiaczny bei Demigod Recordings gemixt und gemastert wurde, wird am 31. Oktober 2025 via Reigning Phoenix Music erscheinen. Seit Juli gibt es auch zu „Baptized In Blood“ einen Video-Clip.

„Der Song beschreibt einen epischen Kampf mit titanischen, gottähnlichen Kreaturen, die die neue Welt bewohnen. Nachdem sie den Spitzenprädator überlebt haben, stehen die Menschen nun einem weiteren scheinbar unbesiegbaren Feind gegenüber. Ihre primitiven Waffen erweisen sich als nutzlos, aber angetrieben von vergangenen Siegen geben sie nicht auf. Es ist David gegen Goliath auf einem fremden Planeten“, erklärt die Band.

TRIVIUM und Schlagzeuger Alex Bent (Foto) gehen künftig getrennte Wege. Das gab die Modern Thrash Metal-Band in einem Statement auf ihren sozialen Medien bekannt. Bent stieß 2016 zur Formation hinzu und nahm mit TRIVIUM insgesamt drei Studioalben auf.

Das Statement des Drummers zum Nachlesen:

„Ich bin überaus dankbar für die unglaublichen letzten neun Jahre mit Trivium – voller unvergesslicher Momente, Musik und Freundschaften, die ich immer in meinem Herzen tragen werde. Ich bin sehr stolz auf jedes Album und jede Tournee, die wir gemeinsam geschaffen haben, und ich weiß, dass Trivium weiterhin die Welt dominieren wird; sie werden immer meine Unterstützung haben.

Auch wenn dieses Kapitel nun zu Ende gegangen ist, ist dies keineswegs das Ende meines Weges als Musiker. Ich freue mich auf dieses neue Kapitel und darauf, weiterhin Musik zu machen, aufzutreten und sie auf neue Weise zu teilen. Vielen Dank an alle, die mich auf diesem Weg unterstützt haben. Long before the boom of Serial, Making a Murderer, and Netflix docuseries fueled by ominous voiceovers and blurred-out faces, the American public was already primed for late-night chills. Shows like America’s Most Wanted and Unsolved Mysteries seeded a fascination with crime that now dominates podcasts and streaming charts—especially those helmed by women whose voices lend empathy and intimacy to their insatiable curiosity about unsolved cases and what drives individuals to commit such heinous acts. Belgian gothic synth-rock band Lovelorn Dolls tap directly into this true-crime media explosion with their new EP, True Crimes. It’s a record that doesn’t just recount cold cases—it exhumes them, giving voice to the voiceless in spectral song.

Since forming in Brussels, Lovelorn Dolls has balanced synth textures, heavy guitars, and Kristell’s haunting vocal presence. Their sound evokes spectral lineages—Theatre of Tragedy, Lacuna Coil, The Birthday Massacre—while their visual identity leans “creepy cute,” merging gothic costumes and cinematic mise-en-scène. The tension between innocence and horror, playful darkness and ritual gravity, has always been their signature.

The True Crimes EP is a tightly wound, thematic four-song EP that reframes real-life mysteries as haunted elegies. Each track corresponds to a notorious unresolved case, blurring the lines between folklore, tragedy, and gothic ritual.

The opening cut, “Dahlia Bleeds”, draws from the infamous Black Dahlia murder in 1947 Los Angeles, turning Elizabeth Short’s unsolved fate into a dirge of distortion and spectral melody. Male and female vocals intertwine to embody the contrasting ways Short was portrayed—innocent dreamer and femme fatale, victim and myth. The result is a track that mirrors the duality of her legacy while underscoring the brutality of her end.

“The Boy in the Box” offers something more mournful: a lullaby turned dirge. It recounts the heartbreaking mystery of the unidentified young boy discovered in a box in Philadelphia in 1957, a case that still unsettles investigators. Sparse instrumentation and spectral harmonies lend it the feel of a ghost child’s cradle song, fragile yet haunting. Its accompanying video deepens the narrative, layering images of detective boards, crime scenes, and a chilling skeletal reveal that lingers like a nightmare.

“Call Me Your Ghost” invokes the cryptic terror of the Zodiac Killer, who taunted California police and media with letters and ciphers in the late 1960s. Here, ghostly harpsichord-like synths twist into sharp guitar lines, conjuring both ritual and menace. The refrain—“Call Me Your Ghost”—resounds like a ciphered chant, an echo of anonymous dread and public obsession. It is the EP’s most ritualistic turning point, steeped in both coded terror and gothic ferocity.

“Velvet Little Voice” concludes the EP with uncanny intimacy, channeling the tragic case of JonBenét Ramsey. Warbling synths and spectral vocal effects mirror the media circus that surrounded her death, while Kristell’s soaring delivery gives voice to the silenced child. A male vocal undercurrent cuts through like accusation or interrogation, heightening the tension. The track’s atmosphere—part séance, part elegy—captures both the sorrow of innocence lost and the exploitation that followed.

True Crimes’ cover art crystallizes the EP’s intent: a gothic girl gazes at a wall of crime boards and victim photos, caught between the roles of detective and medium, both witness and oracle. It is an image that mirrors the music itself, where unsolved histories are assembled not as spectacle but as a case file under examination. With newcomer Eric Renwart adding sharpened edges and layered depth on guitar and engineering, Lovelorn Dolls move with greater precision into this unsettling terrain. True Crimes is not a thematic diversion, but a deliberate inquiry —one that listens to the tension between folklore and fact. In examining humanity’s darkest mysteries through sound, the band reminds us why those drawn to the shadows are often best equipped to give voice to the silence left behind.

Marches doomed to repeat themselves, sermons drowned in static, signals flickering in the dark—these are the fault lines traced in Perimeters’ latest work, Set the Tripwire. The EP offers no escape, only exposure: cracks beneath ritual, cycles of power, and meaning eroded by indifference. Each track functions like a device left hidden in the ruins—taut, primed, waiting for complacency to stumble across the wire.

Perimeters are a three-piece post-punk/darkwave band from Portland, Oregon: Colette on vocals, Chris on synths, and Lan on bass. Their sound sits in the tension between early post-punk minimalism and the spectral atmospheres of darkwave, drawing comparisons to Lebanon Hanover, The Mall, Interpol, and New Order. With stripped-down arrangements and stark vocal delivery, they craft songs that cut through with atmosphere and bite.

The EP’s title track launches with a crunchy drum machine rattling like a detonator countdown. Chris’s synths shimmer with halcyon sighs, while Lan’s bass drives with unembellished classic post-punk melody. Colette’s vocal delivery is taut and minimal, declaiming poetry that feels closer to an urgent communiqué than conventional lyrics. The refrain, “blame indifference / there’s no forgiveness”, resounds like an indictment of collective inertia. Sonically, it feels like a forgotten 1980s cassette dug out of a dusty Walkman—urgent, portable, and personal.

Opening with a pulsing synth bass and an unmistakably Batcave-like bass guitar line, Laced Doctrines fuses old-school goth austerity with the clipped bite of positive punk. Colette’s words land like sharp-edged fragments—“pressure syndicate / slush fund prophets”—skewering institutions and their hollow rituals. The song’s backbone recalls the wiry tension of Malaria! or Cinema Strange, with a hypnotic relentlessness that reinforces its theme of systems conditioning obedience.

At nearly twice the length of the other songs, “Negative Space” becomes the EP’s gravitational core. A throbbing bassline guides the track into subterranean depths, recalling Modern English’s “16 Days / Gathering Dust” as filtered through This Mortal Coil’s sepulchral fog. Vocals blur through distortion, transmitting like a phantom broadcast from a collapsed world: “patterns, cycles, break, broken” looping like coded signals in the dark. The song evolves into a meditation on digital cults, performative lives, and the hollowness of constructed worlds, evoking a gothic dread that feels vast and immersive.

Closing the EP, “Shadow Fleet” strips back to its barest essentials: an unadorned drumbeat, thick bass throbs, and vocals steeped in fatalism. The Joy Division-like bassline anchors Colette’s scathing commentary on monoculture, exploitation, and the sanctioned erosion of love and loyalty. Lines like “doom scrolls / atrocities / holy flesh / photography” collapse the personal and political into a fevered stream of images. The track lingers like an afterimage—final, unyielding, and damning.

Cupid Spell steps forward from the Bloomington underground with an idea stitched together from obsession and accident. The duo of Josh Kreuzman, known for his Twice Dark work, and Mandy Buffington have chosen to explore the crooked space between love and illusion, starting with their debut single Look Alike. Conceived for the tenth issue of Lover’s Eye Press, a folio in homage to David Lynch. The song leans into the unstable dream logic of Twin Peaks, where identities dissolve, and dopplegangers blur our reality with their dark inversion. While stylistically not the kind of song you’d expect to hear in the roadhouse, this earnest synthpop number carries a certain gravitas and symbolism that are right at home in the world of Twin Peaks. (We hear more of a Drab Majesty influence than Badalamenti, for instance, but with the same kind of dreaminess as Chromatics.)

The lyrics set the scene with vanishing angels, poisonous thoughts, and the seduction of dream states. They circle around the notion that trust is fragile, that faces slip, and that language itself can betray. The alternating voices build into a chant of duality: each line undercuts the one before, each voice feels both intimate and estranged. The chorus turns repetition into ritual, hammering home the sense that nothing is fixed, everything refracts.

What lingers is less the shape of the music than the feeling of being pulled inside a mirrored room. Cupid Spell are less concerned with answers than with posing questions: what is reality, who can be believed, and how close is the rotten fruit to the mouth that desires it? These are themes Lynch mined relentlessly, and the song takes them up with a similar fascination.

There is an elegance in the restraint. The duo suggest that people carry within them not one nature but two, that intimacy is never free from deceit, that love itself thrives on disguise. By the close, when voices declare they are not who they seem, the track achieves its clearest revelation: identity is never singular, always unstable, and perhaps always dangerous.

Fleetwood Mac’s Go Your Own Way, a deceptively middle-of-the-road radio staple, was in reality a public exorcism of heartbreak, a battle cry masked in melody, sung through clenched teeth and cracked devotion. Lindsey Buckingham flung his fury into the air, Stevie Nicks absorbed it in real time, and the rest of the world sang along to the sound of a relationship detonating in perfect harmony. Released in 1976, it was both a diary entry and a confession, an accidental anthem of separation. Its staying power lies in that paradox: a wound turned into chorus, a quarrel repurposed as ritual.

Nearly half a century later, Brooklyn’s NightNight, the project of Yasmeen Night, steps into that volatile space with her own reading of the song. Timed, perhaps mischievously, to Lindsey Buckingham’s birthday on October 3rd,  the release feels like a synchronicity. Produced with Gareth Jones, the architect behind works by Depeche Mode and Wire, the track is reimagined as a late-night fever vision, one foot planted in Massive Attack’s brooding electronics, the other brushing against the spectral elegance of Bat For Lashes.

Here, the familiar refrain is reshaped, rebuilt with analogue synths and live instrumentation, engineered by Jeff Berner at Brooklyn’s Studio G. The song becomes less a jagged accusation and more an invocation, reframing the dialogue from the woman’s vantage point. If Buckingham’s original was the sound of a door slammed shut, NightNight’s version is the echo inside the empty room, questioning, reclaiming, rebalancing.

There’s a pulse beneath her arrangement that feels both intimate and immense, like the city’s hum at 3 a.m. The electronics bristle with tension, but never stray into excess; instead, they allow her voice to hold the center, to tilt the meaning back toward clarity. What was once directed at Nicks now finds itself rewritten, possessed by her spirit instead of haunted by her absence.

The track is alive with new urgency, one that understands history but wishes to alter its course. By singing from the other side of the heartbreak, she transforms a pop relic into a dialogue across time, a reminder that songs, like relationships, are never finished…they shift with who dares to sing them next.

Fake Youth Cult is the solo vessel of Richard van Kruysdijk, a Dutch musician, producer, and multimedia artist who thrives on the outskirts of “dark” music. Closer To Death, from his new album, Exit Wounds, does not aim to innovate for the sake of novelty. Instead, it builds on familiar architecture: drum-computer patterns that drive with precision, bass lines that push with steady pulse, guitars and synths that sweep like weather fronts, and vocals drenched in reverb. The palette draws openly from the lineage of Clan of Xymox, The Wolfgang Press, Associates, New Order, and early Cure. These forebears are acknowledged, but never imitated wholesale; his voice insists on its own register.

There is an honesty here, one rooted in retro instinct but bent toward personal revelation. Fake Youth Cult assembles pieces that could easily sit on a cassette rack from 1983, but infuses them with the grit of experience. As van Kruysdijk himself explains: “Familiar musical territory can be a soothing environment. Yet, contradictory as it may sound, my new album is as much cathartic and painful as it is slap bang in the middle of my comfort zone. Musically, I’m exploring my roots and aiming to honour the authentic sound that initially pulled me into a life of making music and art. Lyrically, I’m delving deep into personal experiences of alienation and loss. What remains are ‘exit wounds’ that never really heal completely.”

Closer To Death feels constructed from durable fragments of memory, stitched together with an almost journalistic attention to source and truth.

Exit Wounds is resolutely personal yet outward-looking. It transforms a catalogue of private pain into something communal, an invitation to inhabit old patterns with new eyes. Instead, they take familiar frameworks and make them sites of confession. This balance between structure and vulnerability; between recognition and revelation, marks Fake Youth Cult as less a revivalist exercise than a renewal.

Strasbourg trio Heimberg tilt into the anxious hours of twilight with “It Keeps Me Up (All Night)”, the second single from their forthcoming debut album Faceless. “A hymn to the blurred identities,” the track doesn’t unfold like a conventional song but like a dream slipping out of grasp. Hypnagogic in structure, it conjures that liminal state where you hover between waking and sleep, visions rushing in with the force of a night terror. Bass snarls through static haze, guitars flicker with ghostly reverb, and a drum machine hammers an inescapable grid. What emerges is not release but a cycle tightening inward—a ritual of insomnia, endlessly rewound.

There is something unmistakably Lynchian here—less the empty irony of minimalism, more the hallucinatory dream logic of Twin Peaks, where intimacy turns uncanny and familiar faces transform into strangers. Like a doppelgänger glimpsed in the corner of a dream, the track embodies the terror of identity dissolving in half-light, recalling the disorientation of Lost Highway or the chromatic dread of Blue Velvet. The bassline prowls like an intrusive thought you can’t dispel, the guitars stretch into sheets of metallic resonance, and percussion strikes with mechanical inevitability, as if the body is straining to lift from the bed but remains pinned in paralysis.

Lyrically, words are pared back to near-incantation. They loop in restless half-light like phrases overheard in a dream, sharpening with each return. Heimberg allows repetition to do the unsettling work—each cycle digging deeper, meaning shifting until it becomes menace. The result is a mantra of sleeplessness, where language itself seems to wear a new mask with every turn.

It Keeps Me Up (All Night) sits at the intersection of obsession and erosion, a spiral with no horizon. It plays out as a hymn to the restless body, to nights where the face in the mirror flickers between stranger and accomplice. With their debut, Faceless, Heimberg seizes this intensity and magnifies it, sculpting songs less like structures of sound and more like waking visions—claustrophobic, unmoored, and alive with the unease of a dream you cannot wake from.

The release follows “Fragrance”, the album’s first single, which set the stage with its own brooding tension. Es ist schon ein Sprung, von der maschinellen Heaviness, die AUTHOR & PUNISHER auszeichnet, hin zum Klang der Natur, den „Nocturnal Birding“ imitieren will. Wobei, sind sämtliche Lebewesen nicht auch Maschinen, die allesamt dem Zweck der Arterhaltung dienen? Und sind nicht auch Vögel Teil dieser ökologischen Maschinerie? Dieser Gedanke hat etwas Tröstliches und Kraftvolles. Mögen die vielen Fehlfunktionen der Menschen dafür sorgen, dass das natürliche Gleichgewicht aus den Fugen gerät, arretieren sich die restlichen Spezies so, dass irgendwer immer weiter kommt. Fun Fact dabei: Die Profiteure von den Fehlleistungen des Menschen sind auf lange Sicht nicht Black Rock, Charles Koch und Co., sondern Kleinstlebewesen mit dem Potenzial dem Homo sapiens das Genick zu brechen. Stichwort Antibiotikaresistenzen.

Auch im Bild der Klimakatastrophe steht der Mensch einem übermächtigen Gegner gegenüber: Das gesamte Ökosystem Erde, das weiterexistieren will. Arten werden vergehen, der Mensch trägt die Verantwortung dafür, schafft es aber vielleicht auch selbst, sich vom Planeten zu kicken. Somit ist die naturnahe Ausrichtung von AUTHOR & PUNISHER kein Widerspruch zum bisherigen, stets apokalyptischen Œuvre von Tristan Shone. Der besondere Trick von „Nocturnal Birding“ ist dabei, als Inspiration die Rhythmik und die Melodien der Vögel zu nehmen, um daraus den brachialstmöglichen Industrial zu kreieren, sodass die Grenze zu Sludge und Drone bereits in Sichtweite liegt.

Vogelstimmen mal anders: AUTHOR & PUNISHER nehmen auf „Nocturnal Birding“ den Gesang der Vögel als Inspiration als Basis für ihren brachialen Industrial.
Nach dem äußerst abwechslungsreichen Album „Krüller“ zeigen sich AUTHOR & PUNISHER metallischer denn je, mit einer pechschwarzen, dichten Soundwand, die sich über 35 Minuten hindurchzieht. „Meadowlark“ ist die Schnittmenge aus Industrial und Sludge, kriecht bedrohlich und angriffslustig, fühlt sich dennoch so an, als müsste der große Ausbruch noch kommen. Die ganz große Explosion lassen AUTHOR & PUNISHER noch nicht zu, weshalb „Meadowlark“ als Auftakt gut platziert ist. Für den ersten Aha-Effekt sorgt stattdessen „Titanis“, das mit Percussions und Samples der Indonesier KUNTARI startet und mittels einer sehr extremen Dynamiksteigerung enorm heavy und brutal wirkt.

Dieses Rezept variiert Tristan Shone mit seinen typisch selbstgemachten und arretierten Instrumenten einige Male, wie auch in „Mute Swan“, das durch einen Spoken Word Part von Megan Oztrosits (COUCH SLUT) aufgelockert und das überraschend melodische Finale sogar emotional wird. Besser wird es auf „Nocturnal Birding“ fast nicht mehr. Die relative Gleichförmigkeit des Albums lähmt AUTHOR & PUNISHER überraschenderweise nicht. Da die acht Songs ein sehr kompaktes Album ergeben, ist die überbordende Brachialität von Songs wie „Black Storm Petrel“ (mit Gastbeitrag der Franzosen FANGE) und „Titmice“ und „Rook“ mit ihren simplen, wie kranken Riffs, die von hypnotischen Rhythmen in den präfrontalen Cortex gehämmert werden.

Mehr Sludge, mehr Drone, mehr Gitarren: „Nocturnal Birding“ klingt homogen, doch AUTHOR & PUNISHER vermeiden jegliche Langeweile.
Gitarrist Doug Sabolick, laut Plattenfirma das erste feste Bandmitglied neben Tristan Shone seit 20 Jahren, hat hier natürlich großen Anteil. Die Stücke sind songorientierter, gradliniger, stoischer, aber auch finsterer und brutaler als das, was AUTHOR & PUNISHER auf „Krüller“ lieferten. Dass Tristan Shone wieder minimal versucht Vokalharmonien in einigen Refrains einzubauen, ist wieder genial wie simpel – mit maximalem Ertrag: „Nocturnal Birding“ ist finster und undurchdringlich, dass diese Elemente, so dezent sie auch sein mögen, perfekt zur Geltung kommen. Am Ende liefert „Thrush“ dann mit seinen verstörenden, aber leisen Synthesizern den Boden für eine dissonante Steigerung – ein würdiges Finale, mit dem Shone zeigt, dass AUTHOR & PUNISHER in diesem ornithologischen Kontext auch in der klassischen Ausrichtung funktionieren.

„Nocturnal Birding“ hebt sich vom restlichen Schaffen AUTHOR & PUNISHERs einigermaßen deutlich ab, passt aber dennoch sehr gut zur restlichen Diskografie des US-Projekts. Besonders auf der Metaebene beeindruckt „Nocturnal Birding“, das von Will Putney gnadenlos brutal und laut produziert wurde, ohne steril zu klingen. Es bedarf schon eines sattelfesten Musikers wie Tristan Shone, der monotone Heaviness so ausgewogen ausbalancieren kann, ohne in totale Gleichförmigkeit zu verfallen. Es mag wie der Slogan eines Start-ups klingen, aber im Falle von AUTHOR & PUNISHER ist es wahr: Wenn sich Technik die Natur zum Vorbild nimmt, muss es einfach funktionieren.

Die Doom / Stoner Rock-Band SKOGSKULT stellt ihren neuen Song „Turs“ als Clip bei YouTube vor.

Auch zu „Pakten“ haben die Skandinavier einem Musikvideo produziert. Dabei handelte es sich um den ersten Vorboten des selbstbetitelten Debütalbums, das am 5. Dezember 2025 via Bonebag Records auf CD, Vinyl sowie digital erscheinen wird.

Produziert wurde „Pakten“ von Cavern Deep und Max Malmer. Das Stück ist thematisch in der Nordischen Mythologie verankert.

Darf’s noch etwas lauter sein? ORBIT CULTURE denken nach dem Erfolg ihres Albums „Descent“ (2023) gar nicht einmal daran, etwas an ihrer Herangehensweise zu ändern. Der Sound aus den Reglern Buster Odeholms bleibt mächtig, die Gitarren tief heruntergestimmt und das massive Klangbild so komprimiert, dass die Details bisweilen durchaus im Audio-Sumpf flöten gehen. Das alles sind jedoch bewusst in Kauf genommene Opfer, um der größten Stärke der Schweden in die Hände zu spielen.

„Death Above Life“ setzt schließlich abermals auf einen nahezu unwiderstehlichen Groove, der sich im stampfenden Midtempo beheimatet sieht und von dort aus regelmäßige Abstecher in andere Gefilde wagt. Einst prominenter eingewobene Thrash-Einflüsse spielen zwar nunmehr die zweite Geige, den melodischen Modern Death Metal lockern dafür erneut eingängige Refrains auf, die Frontmann Niklas Karlsson in „Inferna“ oder „Inside The Waves“ mit kratzig-rauer Stimme intoniert.

ORBIT CULTURE bleiben sich auf „Death Above Life“ treu
Demgegenüber steht das donnernde Growling, das für einen Track wie „Hydra“ ähnlich essentiell ist wie das Downtuned-Chugging: nicht sonderlich kreativ, nicht übermäßig anspruchsvoll, aber verdammt zuverlässig darin, unsere ursprünglichen Höhlenmenschen-Triebe zu kitzeln. Nacken brechen können ORBIT CULTURE also nach wie vor zuverlässig, suchen mittlerweile jedoch zum Ausgleich nach anderen Ventilen. „Nerve“ präsentiert sich beispielsweise erstaunlich unverkrampft, setzt auf geradlinigen Drang nach vorne und verhältnismäßig melodische Vocals.

Der ruhige Abschluss „The Path I Walk” gestaltet sich gar introspektiv und offenbart eine Verletzlichkeit, die bislang im Falle des Quartetts nur angedeutet wurde. Aufhorchen lässt überdies das treibende „The Storm“, wo sich die Leadgitarre dezent an AS I LAY DYING zu „An Ocean Between Us“-Zeiten (2007) anlehnt, eine Prise AMON AMARTH hinzuaddiert und auf diese Weise für einen Augenblick der Leichtigkeit sorgt; in Verbindung mit den einsetzenden Chören etwas kitschig und nicht ganz auf dem Niveau des übrigen Materials, aber immer noch zweckmäßig.

Variation und Qualität prägen „Death Above Life“, auch wenn die frischen Ideen fehlen
Kompromissloses Geholze steht mit den Stakkato-Salven von „Bloodhound“ selbstredend ebenfalls auf der Speisekarte, so dass ORBIT CULTURE trotz der übermäßig aufgeblasenen Produktion jeglichen Anflug von Eintönigkeit erfolgreich umgehen. Was „Death Above“ hingegen nicht bietet, ist ein weiteres Ausloten der eigenen Grenzen, wie es etwa die EP „The Forgotten“ (2023) mit ihren ausladend angelegten Kompositionen versucht hat.

Eingängig, massiv und natürlich hitverdächtig stellt sich „Death Above Life“ der zuletzt enorm gewachsenen Fangemeinde vor und zementiert damit natürlich völlig zu Recht den Status der Skandinavier, die sich in den letzten drei Jahren zu einem der wichtigsten Vertreter des modernen Extrem-Metals entwickelt haben. Dass die wirklich originellen Ideen zur gleichen Zeit in der Schublade bleiben müssen, lässt sich derweil ganz gut kaschieren: Im Zweifelsfall drehen wir nämlich einfach noch eine halbe Umdrehung lauter und lassen uns vom Titeltrack gepflegt zurück in die Steinzeit prügeln. Selbst Buster Odeholms auditiver Größenwahn hat somit letztlich etwas Gutes.
