Der Text von „Black Scream“ dreht sich um ein weiteres Opfer des Trojanischen Krieges: Philoctetes. VENDED haben ein Video zu „Where The Honesty Lies“ veröffentlicht, der Song stammt vom selbstbetitelten Debütalbum “Vended”, das heute erschienen ist.

Das Album wurde von Chris Collier produziert und enthält 13  Tracks. Die Band kommentiert das Album wie folgt:

„Wir sehen diese Platte als eine Außenseiter-Darstellung der Welt, in der wir leben. Und eine Reflexion des eigenen Selbst, während wir durch die Emotionen des Lebens treiben. Dwayne Dassing met singer Scott Berens in 2000 at a local bar, where Berens, newly arrived from Reno, was seeking a fresh start. Dassing, having just parted ways with his brother Gary on their project Mentallo & The Fixer, was also on the verge of a new path, aiming for a less abrasive, more organic sound. Their first collaboration, Blind, came together effortlessly—so much so that without that session, Reign of Roses might never have existed. Their sound evolved into something melodic – even medieval-sounding – built around Berens’ deeply evocative lyrics, rich with suffering and sorrow.

With Dwayne Dassing’s formidable collection of synths—ranging from vintage analogue machines to modern digital equipment—he recorded the music for Reign of Roses in a deliberately old-school fashion, relying on a sound-console and an array of outboard effects. The only element committed to software was Berens’ vocals.

The band acknowledges that not all recording sessions mirrored the initial smooth collaboration. Creative clashes often flared, with differing opinions on the direction each song should take. Yet, out of this tension, the music grew, with both artists navigating the delicate dance between their distinct visions. The outcome is a collection of polished tracks, rooted in underground industrial and gothic aesthetics, but equally suited for the dance floor. Reign of Roses thrives on this friction, offering a sound that feels both dark and accessible, shaped by compromise and chemistry.

The duo’s first full-length album, Thorns, features ten intricately layered tracks, spanning from moody dark wave to finely tuned, dance-driven beats, with gothic undertones. Much of the album’s lyrical content stems from Scott’s final tumultuous days in Reno, exploring themes of redemption and rebirth. His quest for a fresh start in a new city adds depth to the record’s haunting, evocative sound.

Now remastered by Dwayne Dassing, Thorns has finally seen the light through Re:Mission Entertainment – and in full circle, Gary Dassing makes an appearance as the drum programmer. Originally set for release in 2006 on Ras Dva Records, the project was delayed due to the death of producer Ric Laciak. The band had previously released a limited edition four-song EP that same year while supporting the Mentallo & The Fixer tour: In Bourbon and in Blood.

In Bourbon and In Blood conjures a mystical, Middle Eastern-tinged atmosphere, transporting listeners to another realm entirely. Drawing from the ethereal sounds of Dead Can Dance, This Mortal Coil, and Fields of the Nephilim, with echoes of Depeche Mode and Enigma, the piece pulses with an otherworldly energy. In contrast, Reflection offers a hypnotic allure, its laid-back, syncopated rhythms interspersed with bubbling, resonant filters. The track’s steady beat and fluid electronic undercurrents seamlessly fuse the ethereal with the danceable, creating a delicate balance between ambiance and movement. Tears of God shifts the mood again, its arpeggiating bells flowing with a melancholic grace, evoking a distinctly Gothic sensibility. The album’s range—from transcendent meditations to rhythmically grounded tracks—reveals a careful layering of elements, guiding listeners through an atmospheric journey.

Ecce Homo, Latin for “Behold the man,” originates from the Gospel of John (19:5), where Pontius Pilate presents a battered Jesus to the crowd before his crucifixion. The phrase has come to symbolize both Christ’s innocence and his suffering, making it a recurring motif in Christian art, often depicting his humanity and torment. Beyond religious circles, Friedrich Nietzsche reinterpreted Ecce Homo in his autobiographical work, using it to examine individuality, the rejection of societal norms, and the critique of Christian morality. Today, the phrase has transcended its origins, serving as a powerful symbol of human frailty, sacrifice, and endurance across various intellectual and artistic domains, where it continues to provoke questions about morality and suffering in an increasingly fractured world. Its resonance remains, not just in theology, but as a lens through which we examine the complexities of existence, power, and vulnerability.

Gavin Friday, the ever-evolving visionary and former Virgin Prunes frontman, makes his long-awaited return with Ecce Homo, his first full-length release since 2011’s Catholic. The new album delves into themes of loss, nostalgic reflections, anthems of unity, and challenges to authority. Friday considers it his most genuine work to date. Set for an October 25th, 2024, release via BMG; the album is produced by Soft Cell’s Dave Ball and Michael Heffernan. Building anticipation in the months leading up to the release, Friday teased fans with cryptic posts written in Ogham, the ancient runic script of early Ireland and Britain.

Ecce Homo‘s title track is a bold, brutal statement, marked by unrelenting noise and raw, aggressive rhythms. Friday turns Pontius Pilate’s infamous words into a pointed rebuke, flinging them at the powerful, the unjust. The sound is anything but subtle: it roars, crashes, and challenges, embodying a visceral intensity that reflects Friday’s unyielding, avant-garde spirit, decades in the making yet still relentlessly forward-facing.

 “The track…is my own personal kick in the head and kiss on the cheek to a world gone very wrong,” says Friday.

Ecce Homo tackles the weighty themes of power, guilt, and corruption, blending religious symbolism with biting social critique. It casts a sharp eye on the manipulation of faith for control, where greed and power trump morality. The track digs into the darker impulses of humanity—hatred and violence—showing a destructive cycle of war and betrayal that hides behind a veneer of righteousness. Through vivid imagery, it critiques the commodification of salvation, calling out the empty promises of redemption sold by those in power. In its relentless questioning, Ecce Homo underscores the futility of seeking salvation through superficial, materialistic means.

A striking AI-generated video was created for the song, produced by studio284 and Petros Tryfon. The visuals unfold apocalyptic scenarios: military forces on the brink of violence, politicians fanning the flames, burning currency, and homes consumed by fire and flood. Meanwhile, angels of mercy strain under the weight of humanity’s mounting sins. Every vice and transgression is on full display, a grim reflection of the world’s current state. The video drives home a powerful message—that the transformative, redemptive energy of Christ exists within us all, transcending creed, color, and circumstance. It’s an urgent call for introspection, a reminder that change starts within, even amid chaos.

The creation of Ecce Homo began over a decade ago when Dave Ball, the co-founder of Soft Cell, reached out to Friday via email to collaborate on a cover of Suicide’s ‘Ghost Rider’ for Alan Vega’s 70th birthday. Despite not having seen each other for many years, they exchanged ideas for songs through email before finally coming together in London for studio sessions. The bulk of Ecce Homo’s music was written during these sessions, with Friday aiming to elevate the songs with the grandeur he had incorporated into his soundtrack work.

Back in Dublin, Friday worked with familiar collaborators, including producer Michael Heffernan, while also caring for his mother, who was in the final stages of Alzheimer’s. During this time, he channeled his anger towards the rise of international strongmen and found inspiration in his loving relationship with another man after a difficult divorce. Ecce Homo became a reflection of his emotions, serving as a monument to his experiences.

In early 2020, Friday was preparing to mix the album when the Covid-19 pandemic hit. He decided to put the project on hold for two years, experiencing personal losses during this time, including the passing of his mother, collaborator Hal Willner, and one of his beloved dogs, Ralf. Despite the challenges, this period seemed to intensify the album, enhancing its emotional depth and resilience.

Ecce Homo captures a range of emotions, reflecting both indignation and tenderness. It acknowledges the hardships of the past while embracing hope for the future. The album is a testament to finding strength and comfort in difficult times, as well as a reflection on the enduring human spirit.

As a teenager, Friday found solace and meaning in music, which he describes as “the release where I could bleed publicly.” Despite being rooted in loss, Ecce Homo conveys a story of survival and the search for what can propel us forward in life. It is an honest portrayal of the complexities of life, acknowledging both its challenges and potential for growth.

“Ecce Homo” is set to launch on October 25th via BMG. Fans can get their hands on a limited edition transparent blue vinyl or opt for the deluxe CD package, which comes with an exclusive 28-page booklet and bonus material. The album will also be available for digital download, with the added bonus of two exclusive remixes.

Seattle-based Atomic Pines blends post-hardcore’s raw intensity with the introspective sensibilities of indie-folk, all underscored by a progressive edge. Their latest EP, Sunlight Lost in a Portal, offers a deeply personal meditation on displacement, change, and life’s most difficult reckonings. Frontman Collin Magdaz’s battle with cancer and the journey through its aftermath permeate the EP, lending a weighty emotional resonance to each track. The band’s ability to merge gritty energy with moments of quiet reflection creates a striking contrast, highlighting the fragility of existence and the unavoidable confrontation with life’s harshest truths.

For the first time, the band collaborated as a cohesive unit, co-producing alongside Timothy Robert Graham, with mixing by Sean O’Keefe (Fall Out Boy, Hawthorne Heights). The result is a wildly disparate, powerful blend of grit and emotional depth, tapping into the tumultuous experience of transformation—both personal and shared.

“Sunlight Lost in a Portal is the most honest music I’ve ever made,” says Magdaz. “The songs on this EP are part of a personal reckoning, facing things I’ve tried to avoid for too long. Working with the full band brought a new kind of energy that pushed the songs to a deeper level. It’s raw and it’s vulnerable, and I’m excited for people to hear something this real.”

The album opens with the brilliant Twin Creeks, a serene summer scene brought to life through vivid natural imagery—dew on leaves, foxglove in bloom—juxtaposed with darker elements of urban decay, from drug dealers to drag racers. This tranquility is shattered by a cosmic disturbance, a portal tearing through time and space, hinting at decay and the inevitable end of seasons, casting a lingering sense of loss over the track. With its wild prog rock synth arpeggios and passionate vocals, it brings to mind 1969 Bowie singing about 1976 matters.

Darkness follows, delving into fear, guilt, and mortality with a more acoustic folk approach. The song paints a portrait of grappling with inner demons, haunted by decay and the looming threat of self-destruction. As nightfall approaches, the speaker faces the terrifying possibility of becoming the very monster they fear, yet finds solace in the enduring connection to a loved one. Even in death, the bond remains, promising to haunt and linger, a presence that refuses to fade, symbolizing both love and loss. This Americana-tinged song brings to mind the songwriting of Lee Hazlewood, Arcade Fire, and Deerhunter.

Ghosts of Indiana moves into rapid-fire 90s alternative rock territory with its blistering guitar, pounding drums, and screaming vocal delivery, painting a grim picture of industrial decay and personal defeat. Dust, smoke, and a crow with a “crown of shame” evoke desolation, as the speaker is weighed down by past failures and a bleak, seemingly inescapable future. Trapped in a “dead end town,” the song reflects the oppressive pull of broken dreams, with steel mills and thunder looming as symbols of crushing inevitability. The imagery captures the suffocating sense of fate closing in, a life resigned to obscurity, where ambition falters and hope fades under the relentless weight of time and failure. It is hard to not feel emotional stirring with this one.

The feral brainchild of Los Angeles-based multimedia artist and producer Sam An, Lana Del Rabies defies the confines of conventional genre. Del Rabies channels an avant-garde sensibility, drawing on the experimental post-punk of Fad Gadget and John Foxx, the eerie mystique of Delia Derbyshire’s BBC experiments, and a nod to Karlheinz Stockhausen’s radical compositions.  These influences are infused with the atmospheric noise collages reminiscent of Puce Mary and Zola Jesus’s NIKA, pulsing with grief, loss, and despair. The result is an unsettling, emotional exploration of a fractured world, unapologetically raw and relentless.

As Lana Del Rabies gears up for her European tour with Pharmakon and Kollaps, she offers a bold, unnerving take on Garbage’s 1998 hit Paranoid. Sam An transforms Shirley Manson’s glossy pop hook into something far more sinister and unsettling—stripping away the 90s production polish to reveal the raw tension beneath within the actual lyrics.

The Lana Del Rabies cover trades the original’s radio-friendly sheen for a darker, more primal soundscape, where static, noise, and  howls converge. The track feels like a descent into the subconscious, where the pressures of a hard world bubble up to the surface. It’s less of a cover than a full reimagining of the song into a fierce exploration of the fractured psyche, laden with the grit and pain that lurks behind the lyrics. In An’s hands, the fully deconstructed Paranoid transforms into a cautionary tale of survival in a brutal, unforgiving world and a magic spell conjuring divine protection.

The self-directed visualizer mirrors the track’s unsettling tone, filled with static-laden, glitchy transmissions and slow-motion shots of a woman grappling with anguish. It plays out like an exorcism, purging the weight of years of gaslighting, manipulation, and emotional suppression. The sluggish beat and cavernous echoes amplify the sense of suffocation, as the woman’s screams reverberate through an empty void. The video transforms the rawness of personal pain into something almost tangible—a palpable release of long-buried trauma. It’s a visceral confrontation with the ghosts of psychological warfare, using fractured imagery and dissonance to underscore the desperation for escape and liberation.

Lana Del Rabies made a grand re-entrance in 2023 with STREGA BEATA, her first record after a five-year game of hide and seek. With this album, she planted her flag firmly in the realm of dark electronic and experimental music, infusing it with a flavor of apocalyptic angst that’s more maximal than your uncle’s holiday light display.

BEARTOOTH haben eine neue Single veröffentlicht: „ATTN.“ steht als Musikvideo bei YouTube bereit. Mit dem Stück feiert die Formation die Veröffentlichung von „The Surface (Deluxe Edition)“, die seit 20. September 2024 via Red Bull Records erhältlich ist. Die erweiterte Fassung des Studioalbums enthält als Bonusmaterial neben dem neuen Song drei Live-Aufnahmen sowie drei Tracks mit alternativem Mix.

“ATTN.“ schließt den Albumzyklus auch inhaltlich ab, wie Frontmann Caleb Shomo erklärt:

„‚ATTN.‘ handelt von der ultimativen Schlussfolgerung, zu der ich nach diesem ganzen Albumzyklus und dem Leben mit diesen Liedern so lange, wie ich es jetzt getan habe, gekommen bin. Ich denke, Selbstliebe hat zu einem tieferen Verständnis meines Wertes als Person geführt, für mich selbst und für andere. Ich werde immer stolz auf meine Kunst sein, und ich werde immer stolz auf die Arbeit sein, die ich investiert habe, um das auszudrücken, was mir wichtig ist. Ich denke, das ist eine großartige Lektion für jeden, die er aus seiner eigenen Arbeit und seinem eigenen Leben ziehen kann.“

Für Herbst 2024 haben BEARTOOTH eine weitere Europatour angekündigt, um ihr neues Album “The Surface” (2023) live vorzustellen. Auf dem Programm stehen Shows in Berlin, Köln, Wien, Wiesbaden, München und Hamburg.

Das Progressive / Art Rock-Projekt HERIN hat mit “Warning Signs” – mit Michael Sadler (SAGA) und Jeff Kollman (COSMOSQUAD) – einen Video-Clip zum Opener ihres kommenden Albums “Hiding In Plain Sight” veröffentlicht. Es ist das erste Solo-Album von Chris Herin (TILES) und wird am 1. November 2024 via The Laser’s Edge erscheinen. Produziert wurde das Album von Terry Brown (u.a. für RUSH tätig).

“Hiding In Plain Sight” ist ein konzeptionelles Werk, das Chris Herins schwierigen Weg an der Seite seines Vaters beschreibt, der seit zehn Jahren mit der Alzheimer-Krankheit kämpft. Vorab gibt es zu “The Darkest Hour” ein Lyric-Video. Als Gäste mit von der Partie sind bei diesem Song Gitarrist Martin Barre, Drummer Doane Perry und Sänger Mark Mikel, die alle mit JETHRO TULL in Verbindung gebracht werden können.

“Birna”, das sechste Studioalbum von WARDRUNA, wird am 24. Januar 2025 über Sony Music und By Norse Music veröffentlicht. Birna ist ein altnordisches Wort für “Bärin”.

Schon heute veröffentlicht die norwegische Band die neue Single und ein Musikvideo zu „Himinndotter“. Komponist Einar Selvik erklärt:

„Himinndotter (Himmelstochter) ist Teil einer sechs Songs umfassenden Erkundung des Bären auf Wardrunas kommendem Album Birna (Bärenfrau). Der Titel spielt auf die weltweit verbreitete Vorstellung vom mythischen Ursprung des Bären als himmlisches Wesen an. Als Gäste sind die Mitglieder des norwegischen Chors ‚Koret Artemis‘ zu hören.“

Das Video zu „Himinndotter“ wurde im Rondane-Nationalpark in Norwegen gedreht, von Tuukka Koski inszeniert und von Breakfast Helsinki und Ragnarok Film produziert.

Live-Album ‚Live at the Acropolis‘
Mit dem neuen Album erscheint auch der Mitschnitt von WARDRUNAS Auftritt zur Tagundnachtgleiche im Weltkulturerbe Odeon des Herodes Atticus auf der Akropolis in Athen, ‚Live at the Acropolis‘ wird ebenfalls am 24. Januar 2025 veröffentlicht.  Die über zweistündige Show bietet  Live-Performances von Liedern aus der Diskografie von WARDRUNA wie „Helvegen“, „Kvitravn“, „Heimta Thurs“ und „Lyfjaberg“.

Schon ab Herbst 2024 sind WARDRUNA auf Tour, weitere Termine werden demnächst bekannt gegeben.

OPETH veröffentlichen ihr 14. Studioalbum, „The Last Will And Testament“ erst am 22. November 2024. Eigentlich sollte es schon ab 11. Oktober 2024 in den Läden stehen.

Frontmann Mikael Åkerfeldt erklärt, warum das Album später auf den Markt kommt:

 „Wir wollen das bestmögliche Produkt auf den Markt bringen und brauchen noch etwas Zeit, damit es unserem Standard entspricht. Wir können verstehen, dass manche von euch enttäuscht über die Verzögerung sind, doch wir wissen eure Geduld und eure ununterbrochene Unterstützung wirklich sehr zu schätzen. Wir können es selbst kaum erwarten, euch allen unsere neue Musik zu präsentieren und wir sind uns sicher, dass sich das Warten auszahlen wird.

Als ersten Vorgeschmack präsentierten die Schweden bereits Anfang August die Single ‚§1‘ als Stream, außerdem gibt es auch ein Lyrics-Video zu “§1”. Im September teilte die Gruppe mit “§3” einen zweiten Track der Platte.

Im Februar 2025 sind OPETH auf Europatour, in Deutschland sind vier Konzerte angekündigt.  Wer „The Last Will And Testament“ jetzt vorbestellt, kann sich mit einem Code Tickets für die Tour reservieren, der allgemeine Vorverkauf startet am 9. August um 10 Uhr.

OPETH Sänger/Gitarrist Mikael Åkerfeldt warnt, dass man der neuen Platte vielleicht etwas Zeit geben sollte:

„Ich muss es einfach loswerden: Ich liebe dieses Album. Vielleicht bin ich sogar ein bisschen stolz? Natürlich enthält es einige altbekannte Zutaten, denn die meiste unserer Musik entstammt derselben Quelle. Es dürfte also keine Überraschung sein, dass die Platte nach OPETH klingt. Ich erstarre fast etwas in Ehrfurcht, wenn ich sehe, was wir mit „The Last Will And Testament“ geschaffen haben. Träume ich all das? In gewisser Art und Weise hängt alles auf dem Album irgendwie zusammen und auch musikalisch schimmert hier und da unser Können durch, hoffe ich. Aber was weiß ich schon? Ich neige dazu, das ‚Ungewöhnliche‘ jeglichem ‚Offensichtlichen‘ vorzuziehen, obgleich ich damit einer Minderheit anzugehören scheine, aber damit kann ich leben. Also, eine berechtigte Warnung vorab: Erwartet nicht, dass es sofort ‚klickt‘, aber falls doch, dann geht das selbstverständlich auch in Ordnung!“

„The Last Will And Testament“ ist ein Konzeptalbum über die Zeit nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg und erzählt die Geschichte eines wohlhabenden, konservativen Patriarchen, dessen letzter Wille einige Familiengeheimnisse zutage bringt. Die Songs spiegeln dabei die Geständnisse des Patriarchen wider, zeigen aber auch die Reaktionen seiner Zwillingskinder und eines an Polio erkrankten Mädchens, um das sich die Familie kümmert.

Åkerfeldt berichtet, wie das Album entstand:

„Dies ist die erste Scheibe, auf der Walt am Schlagzeug zu hören ist. Ihm bei seinen Aufnahmen zuzusehen und zuzuhören, war ein außergewöhnliches Erlebnis, weshalb ich mich einfach nur fragte: Wie kann ein Mensch derart gut spielen? Die Alteingesessenen unter uns, Mendez, Fred, Jocke und ich, nahmen unsere Teile fristgemäß auf und ich denke, dass wir ebenfalls gut abgeliefert haben, was sicherlich auch daran liegen mag, dass wir quasi nüchtern waren, wenn die roten Aufnahmelämpchen angingen. Wir sind eben Profis, wie ihr seht! Wir fühlten uns in den Rockfield Studios wirklich wohl, wir lieben sie! Stefan Boman kümmerte sich um die Aufnahmen [er hielt mehr oder weniger alles auf Band fest…] und den gesamten Mix. Miles Showell masterte die Platte anschließend in den Abbey Road Studios, was wir, Stefan und ich, ihm mit einem Curry in Covent Garden dankten. Travis Smith verlieh der Musik mit einem einmal mehr ureigenen Artwork das passende Gewand. Alles in allem hoffen wir, dass wir einen musikalischen Happen geschaffen haben, an dem ihr in der regnerischen Jahreszeit knabbern könnt. Danke für eure Zeit, fürs Lesen und fürs Zuhören. Dank euch können wir eine derart beachtliche Historie vorweisen. Für unsere Zukunft werde ich euch dann in der eigentlichen Zukunft danken. Geht das klar?“

OPETHs 14. Studioalbum wurde von Åkerfeldt geschrieben, während er für die Texte Klara Rönnqvist Fors (THE HEARD, ex-CRUCIFIED BARBARA) mit ins Boot holte. Aufgenommen wurde „The Last Will And Testament“ gemeinsam von Åkerfeldt und Stefan Boman, der mit Joe Jones und OPETH auch für die technische Umsetzung verantwortlich war. Dem Abmischprozess nahmen Boman, Åkerfeldt und die übrigen OPETH-Musiker sich in den Atlantis Studios sowie den Hammerthorpe Studios an. Die Streicherarrangements wurden von Åkerfeldt und Dave Stewart (EGG, KHAN) geschrieben, während Stewart auch deren Aufnahmen in den Londoner Angel Studios leitete.

Travis Smith gestaltete bereits zum elften Mal ein Cover für die Band. Dieses Mal schuf er ein schauriges Bild, das an Stanley Kubricks  „Overlook Hotel“-Fotografie erinnert.

 

Als Gäste sind Flötist und JETHRO-TULL-Frontmann Ian Anderson und  EUROPEs Joey Tempest zu hören. Åkerfeldts jüngste Tochter, Mirjam Åkerfeldt, schließt die Gästeliste mit ihrer Stimme auf ‚§1‘ ab.

The Cure have once again proven their knack for cryptic allure, dropping enigmatic breadcrumbs teasing the next chapter in their storied career. This time, it comes in the form of a tantalizing clip for the song “Alone,” which is likely to be the first single from their long-awaited new album Songs of a Lost World. For those who’ve been following their sprawling 2022-2023 tour, “Alone” was the curtain-raiser for their live set—a brooding, slow-burner that immediately cast a lunar shadow over the night.

The band, ever the purveyors of mystery, shared parts of the clip via their mailing list and WhatsApp channel, with subscribers receiving a message containing the ominous lyric, “This is the end of every song we sing.” Then, in a typically oblique fashion, another message arrived: “Want to hear ‘Alone?'” A simple “YES” sent fans spiraling into a digital scavenger hunt, leading them to return to the newly unveiled Songs of a Lost World website. With a few cryptic clicks—specifically once again changing the Roman numerals to the album’s release date, “I XI MMXXIV”—listeners were greeted with the stone-face image (which was previously used on tour badges and credentials during 2022 and 2023) this time accompanied by a snippet of Smith’s plaintive voice delivering those foreboding lyrics.

Meanwhile, billboards promoting Songs of a Lost World have begun cropping up in cities around the globe, further cementing the sense that something monumental is on the horizon. The signs—literal and figurative—point toward GPS coordinates leading to a Tower in Robert Smith’s hometown of Blackpool, where it all began, and a November 1 release date. However, The Cure remains tight-lipped on confirming details. One can only hope that this cryptic campaign culminates in an album that lives up to the haunting mystique they’ve conjured so far. Big Mountain County crashed onto the Roman music scene in 2013, drawing together two members from Mount Etna’s rugged terrain and two from the Adriatic Coast. United by their love for The Stooges, MC5, The Velvet Underground, and Joe Spencer, the quartet released a raw, raucous 7-inch that quickly made waves. Now, Big Mountain County is poised to release their third LP, Deep Drives, on November 29th via Sister 9 Recordings. “We wanted to thrust the listener deep into the metropolitan nightscape, where a relentless and frenetic rhythm takes over, enveloping everything in a synthetic, alienating texture,” admits the band. “The night itself is the hysterical protagonist of the song. It is a landscape of fear, neon flickers and speeding cars tearing through the streets. It is a tale of shattered promises, empty pockets and failures, where the only release is a howl into the high-octane blur of the abyss.”

Directed by Alessandro Montemgno, the video captures the band in the midst of a raucous night out, playing for a lively crowd. The club pulses with frenetic energy as the band’s performance fuels a cast of characters who teeter between revelry and reckless abandon. Montemgno’s lens captures the sweaty, gritty chaos of the scene, where enthusiasm and excess collide, and the line between music and mayhem blurs. It’s a snapshot of unfiltered nightlife, where the band’s ferocious performance mirrors the wild abandon of the night’s rowdy patrons.

After showcasing their most recent EP, Klaus, at the New Colossus Festival in New York and SXSW in Austin, Big Mountain County took a year-long studio hiatus. During this break, they sharpened a distinctive sound, blending raw garage rock and neopsychedelia with electroclash, Krautrock, and disco.

Anja Huwe, the formidable frontwoman of German post-punk luminaries Xmal Deutschland, is set to make a triumphant return to music. After etching her name into the annals of alternative music with four seminal albums on 4AD and a series of influential singles, Huwe shifted her creative energies towards a flourishing career in visual arts. Now, after years away from the microphone, she has re-emerged with her solo album, CODES, released earlier in 2024 release, alongside reissues of Xmal Deutschland’s early singles on Sacred Bones Records.

The initial acclaim for CODES has been nothing short of fervent, igniting a groundswell of demand from fans old and new. Responding to this enthusiasm, Huwe plans to grace the stage once more, delivering live performances that meld her new material with reimagined classics from the Xmal Deutschland catalogue. Backed by a yet-to-be-announced lineup, these shows promise to be a multisensory experience, complete with visual art crafted by Huwe herself. Her first confirmed appearance is scheduled for the Grauzone Festival in the Netherlands in February 2025, with additional dates across the UK and Europe to follow.

In tandem with this announcement, Huwe is unveiling remixes of two early Xmal Deutschland singles by fellow German band No More. The reinterpretations offer a fresh lens through which to experience these classic tracks.

“Die Wolken” is transformed into a sleek, stripped-down electro anthem. The remix fuses the brooding intensity of post-punk with a sharper, club-ready pulse. Its minimalist structure hums with a hypnotic rhythm, propelling the track forward while maintaining the dark undercurrents that anchor its origins.

In contrast, “Schwarze Welt” ventures into moody trip-hop territory, wrapping the track in a hazy, downtempo vibe. While the raw punk energy lingers in Huwe’s vocals, it’s now enveloped by shimmering synths. The result balances the grit of its punk past with an ethereal, ambient allure that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly contemporary.

Die Fun Metal-Band NANOWAR OF STEEL feiert ihr 20-jähriges Jubiläum mit einer Live-Platte: “XX Years Of Steel” erscheint am 6. Dezember 2024 via Napalm Records auf CD, Vinyl sowie digital. Aufgezeichnet wurde der Mitschnitt während der Show in Mailand (Alcatraz) 2023. Neben dem 28 Songs umfassenden Live-Set enthält die Veröffentlichung eine dritte Disc mit Studio-Versionen, darunter auch zwei brandneue Tracks. “Stormwarrior Of The Storm” gibt es vorab als Clip bei YouTube.

Nach der supererfolgreichen "Legacy"-Tour und Festival-Shows wird die britische Electropop-Band noch einmal und für ein exklusives Konzert unter dem Titel "The Show At Which It Falls Apart" nach Deutschland kommen. Es gibt Grund zum Feiern und das soll mit den deutschen Fans, denen man als Band sehr viel zu verdanken hat, am 14.12.2024 in Dresden passieren: 25 Jahre nach der Veröffentlichung des 1999er Erfolgsalbums „The Point At Which It Falls Apart“, welches MESH erstmalig zu einer eigenen Tournee und Open Air-Festivals verhalf, steht das Re-Release in den Startlöchern.

Das Leben findet einen Weg. Steht die Welt auch lichterloh in Flammen, wie es das düstere Cover-Artwork darlegt, so reichen die Wurzeln tief. Diese Resilienz, dieses Vermögen, sich selbst nach verheerender Zerstörung wieder aus der Asche zu erheben, ist eine der bemerkenswertesten Eigenschaften der Natur und Teil des ewigwährenden Kreislaufs, der sich wie ein roter Faden durch „Embers“ zu spinnen scheint.

Kein Konzeptalbum im klassischen Sinn, breiten sich die instrumentalen Soundscapes jedoch weitflächig aus und lassen die Geschichte wie von Zauberhand im Kopf entstehen. Als würden GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT mit klaren Worten sprechen, erzählt „Odyssey“ nicht nur aufgrund seines Titels von einer beschwerlichen Reise, wohingegen das melancholische „Falling Leaves“ als Sinnbild unseres menschlichen Lebenszyklus herhalten könnte.

GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT inszenieren sich auf “Embers” als Meister des Kopfkinos
Dieses Kopfkino und diese Auseinandersetzung mit ihren Klangwelten sind seit jeher die größte Stärke der Post-Rock-Veteranen, welche nach den rauen, teils rifforientierten Kompositionen des Vorgängers „Ghost Tapes #10“ (2021) nun wieder ins Zentrum rücken. Insofern erinnert „Embers“ tendenziell eher an frühere Errungenschaften denn jüngere Eskapaden, wenn „Apparition“ federleicht und filigran nach vorne schwebt und wie das erwähnte „Odyssey“ dezent orientalisch-angehauchte Klänge einfließen lässt.

Die verzerrten Gitarren verleihen dem erstgenannten Stück zur Mitte hin Gravitas: Ein schwerwiegendes, fast schon bedrohliches Element lässt uns unruhig auf dem Sitz hin und herrücken. Sitar und Psalter wiederum sind zentrale Bausteine, welche die Atmosphäre des Werks in vielerlei Hinsicht prägen. Als immer wiederkehrende Klangfarben verleihen die Ethno-Instrumente „Embers“ ein eigenständiges Profil, das die ausladenden Arrangements mit Leben und einer gewissen Portion Sehnsucht füllt.

Den zehnminütigen Titeltrack als musikalische Reise zu bezeichnen mag eine Plattitüde sein und trifft doch den Nagel auf den Kopf. Gleiches könnte man ohnehin von diesem Album als Gesamtwerk sagen, schließlich entführen uns GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT an eine Vielzahl von Schauplätzen, die einerseits vertraut und doch wie unentdecktes Land wirken. Die Faszination und Vielfalt, die dem Trio jüngst abhandengekommen war, steckt „Embers“ jedenfalls in Mark und Bein. Unbehagliche Augenblicke wie die schaurig jaulenden Gitarren in „Heart Of Roots“ treffen auf den entrückten Piano-Streicher-Abschied „Hourglass“ und uns letzten Endes endlich wieder ins Herz. Offenbar findet nicht nur das Leben einen Weg.

Die Thrash Metal-Band HÖWLER hat mit “Oath In Black” eine neue Single mitsamt Video-Clip veröffentlicht.

“Der Text von „Oath in Black“ erforscht die dunkleren Aspekte der menschlichen Natur und stellt die Frage, ob Bosheit und Verrat in uns angelegt sind. Der Song fragt, ob Krieg für immer ein Teil der menschlichen Geschichte bleiben wird und reflektiert die Komplexität unserer Existenz”, sagt die Band.

Der Song folgt dem 2022er-Album “Descendants of Evil” nach – dem vierten Album der Band aus Costa Rica.

Mit “Return Of The Heralds” wird am 20. September 2024 via Scarlet Records das neue Album der Power / Speed Metal-Band KRILLOAN erscheinen. Es ist nach “Emperor Rising” (2022) das zweite Album der Schweden und wurde mit einem Cover-Artwork von Alvaro Valverde ausgestattet. Vorab gibt es nach dem Video-Clip zum Opener “Atlantean Sword” und dem Titeltrack – mit den Gästen Johan Haraldsson und Johan Karlsson (jeweils EVERMORE) – nun auch das Lyric-Video zu “Hammer Of Wrath“.

Die Instrumental Psychedelic Rock-Band KANAAN und die Neo-Folk-Band ÆVESTADEN haben mit “Langt, Langt Vekk” ein gemeinsames Album angekündigt. Es ist die erste Zusammenarbeit der beiden norwegischen Bands.

“Langt, Langt Vekk” wurde von Hans Martin Rundberg Austestad gemixt und gemastert und mit einem Cover-Artwork von Sängerin Eir Vatn Strøm ausgestattet. Release-Termin ist der 11. Oktober 2024 via Jansen Records. Mit “Vallåt efter C.G. Färje” ist nun eine weitere Single erschienen.
