In the far-off realm of the ‘land Down Under,’ specifically the southern reaches of Australia, lurks IT KNOWS, a post-punk project that gleefully explores the digital age’s darker alleys. Themes like technophobia and isolation skulk in the shadows of this idyllic corner of the planet. IT KNOWS, eschewing your typical song fodder, has its eyes on the pulsating heart of our tech-saturated world; probing the nuances of our modern existence with a sound both introspective and edgy.

IT KNOWS navigates the complexities of living in an era where technology is king, yet often leaves its subjects feeling more alone than ever. They’re holding up a mirror to society, reflecting a dimly lit room. POETRY, their latest single, is a resonating echo of the solitude and apprehension that come hand-in-hand with our increasingly connected world.

IT KNOWS plays their hand at artistic one-upmanship as POETRY serves up a delectable dish of artistic introspection with a side of wry self-deprecation, all neatly plated in a dystopian setting. The wry, raw melody simultaneously winks at you while scolding itself in the looking-glass. Its blend of angst and an almost playful contempt convey a warning not just for the ears that dare to listen, but also for its very creator.

The lyric video for POETRY is a digital funhouse mirror – hypnotic, sure, but with the glitchy charm that makes you wonder if your screen is having a mild existential crisis. It’s like watching a very sophisticated robot trying to understand human emotions and slightly getting seasick in the process.

After all – art is serious business, but let’s not get too pompous about it.

Their new album, to some as hymns beget the worst, serves as a sequel of sorts to 2022’s seen, but with a twist. This time, IT KNOWS dives headfirst into the swirling pool of modern society and the ever-cranky music industry, only to find out that while the water is just fine, it tastes of bitter irony.

“It is at its core an anti-AI album,” muses the band. “Simultaneously it’s also antifascist, anti-art and anti-IT KNOWS. It’s confusing.”

IT KNOWS tiptoes along the tightrope of contemporary critique. It’s a delightful romp through the absurdity of seriousness, where deep thoughts sport clown shoes, and the frivolous suddenly don academic robes. Don’t let the playful façade fool you, though. Underneath lies a bleeding electronic heart: clunky yet unmistakably human, like a robot trying to dance the tango. IT KNOWS finds themselves at their most whimsically critical, a digital smirk at the status quo.

Mit “Swallowed By Hell” wird in einigen Wochen das neue Album der Thrash / Death Metal-Band MORBID SAINT erscheinen. Es ist nach “Spectrum of Death” (1990) und “Destruction System” (1992 bzw. mit offiziell nachgeholtem Release 2015) das dritte Album der US-Amerikaner aus Wisconsin.

“Swallowed By Hell” wurde gemeinsam mit Chris Djuricic (u.a. für NOVEMBERS DOOM tätig) bei The Belle City Sound Company aufgenommen und von Scott Elliott in den Chernobyl Studios gemixt und gemastert. Das Cover-Artwork stammt von Ed Repka (u.a. für MEGADETH tätig). Erscheinen wird das Album am 9. Februar 2024 via High Roller Records.

MORBID SAINT, deren Gründung bereits 1984 erfolgte, sind Sänger Pat Lind, die Gitarristen Jay Visser und Jim Fergades, Bassist Bob Zabel sowie Drummer DJ Bagemehl.

Mit “Funeral for a King” wird in einigen Wochen das neue Album der Doom Metal-Band STYGIAN CROWN erscheinen. Es ist nach “Stygian Crown” (2020) das zweite Album der US-Amerikaner aus Los Angeles.

“Funeral for a King” wurde von Mark Kelson (THE ETERNAL) gemixt und von Charles Elliott (ABYSMAL DAWN) gemastert. Das Cover-Artwork stammt von Kris Verwimp (u.a. für SUIDAKRA tätig). Erscheinen wird das Album am 23. Februar 2024 via Cruz Del Sur Music. Vorab gibt es mit “Bushido” ein Lyric-Video.

Die IMPERICON FESTIVALS gehen 2024 in eine neue Runde und feiern dabei auch eine Premiere: Erstmals erhält die Festival-Reihe auch einen Ableger in Hamburg. Stattfinden wir ddie Veranstaltung außerdem wie gehabt in den fünf Städten Wien, Leipzig, Zürich, Oberhausen sowie München.

Wie gehabt erhält jede Stadt ein anderes Line-up, wobei der Headliner AS I LAY DYING an allen Terminen gesetzt ist. Kurz vor Weihnachten präsentieren die Veranstalter außerdem eine Überraschung: BREAKDOWN OF SANITY feiern auf allen vier deutschen Festivals ihr Comeback.

Eine zweite Bandwelle erweiterte das Billing um CALLEJON (Leipzig), TERROR, NEAERA (Leipzig, Oberhausen), NASTY, DYING WISH, THORNHILL (Leipzig, Oberhausen) sowie THROWN (Leipzig, Oberhausen, Zürich, München). Die Melodic Death / Black Metal-Band BEYREVRA hat mit “Beheading The Truth” einen Video-Clip ihres kommenden Albums “Echoes: Vanished Lore of Fire” veröffentlicht. Es ist das erste Album der Band aus Nürnberg, die 2022 mit der EP “Burning Fate” debütierte.

“Echoes: Vanished Lore of Fire”, das Geschichten über die Unterdrückung der Menschen durch Religion und Kirche, teilweise inspiriert durch historische Ereignisse, erzählt, wurde mit einem Cover-Artwork von Markus Graupner ausgestattet. Erscheinen wird das Album am 29. Februar 2024 via Trollzorn Records.

Scott “Wino” Weinrich is a living legend. Considered the American Lemmy, he's always been a rebel, a loner and an outsider in an outsider scene, as well as one of one of the earliest pioneers of American doom when he founded The Obsessed in the late 1970s. Now, in 2024, The Obsessed come roaring back with their most rocking album of all time. Expanded to a 4-piece, their music is more aggressive, straight-ahead and downright mean than ever. Die schottischen Rocker THE ALMIGHTY um Mainman RICKY WARWICK (THIN LIZZY, BLACK STAR RIDERS) hatten im Februar verkündet, für einige Live-Shows wieder zusammenzukommen. Ja ja, das gab es immer wieder mal von der 1988 in Glasgow gegründeten Band. Jetzt aber schiebt man zudem die ersten beiden Alben „Blood, Fire And Love“ und „Soul Destruction“ als hübsche „35th Anniversary Edition“ Vinylausgabe neu raus.

THE ALMIGHTY legen „Blood, Fire And Love“ und „Soul Destruction“ als 35th Anniversary Edition Vinylausgabe neu auf
“Blood, Fire And Love” sorgte 1989 für ein erstes Aufhorchen. Dachte man bei Sleaze Rock doch eher an die Musikmetropolen der USA, so war man doch überrascht, nun aus Glasgow bedient zu werden. Vor allem als starke Liveband machten sich THE ALMIGHTY schnell einen Namen. So kam auch schon ein Jahr nach dem Debüt die Livescheibe “Blood, Fire And Live”. Als Opener von … hm … ich denke RATT hatten die Schotten mich bereits als Fan kassiert.

Um mich im März 1991 mit dem zweiten Album “Soul Destruction“ total umzuhauen. DURAN DURAN-Gitarrist Andy Taylor als Produzent sorgte für einen etwas aufgeräumteren, kraftvolleren Sound. Auch heute noch wandert die Original-CD immer mal wieder im Player. 2014 gab es eine Neuauflage als Deluxe-Version mit den üblichen Radioedits, Liveaufnahmen, Demos und Co. Da kommt heute der Vinyl-Release natürlich genau richtig, das im zum Cover passenden Quitschgrün. Und die Musik sorgt weiterhin für Glückseligkeit. Kraftvolle Drums sorgen für einen energischen Einstand, die Gitarren schieben mit leichten Fast Eddie-Touch, sorgen für die erste Luftgitarreneinlage, bei den knackigen Breaks geht die Faust gen Himmel. „Crucify“ tritt auch heute noch vom ersten Takt an Popo, macht Spaß, Man(n) fühlt sich stark und kampfbereit.

„Soul Destruction“ sorgt immer noch für rockige Glückseligkeit
Wie damals, vor der Bühne in einem Haufen britischer Soldaten, die mich mitgenommen hatten, hat man durchaus kämpfen müssen, um da durchzukommen. Da fühlt man sich gleich entspannter und freier, wenn „Free ‘n’ Easy“ aus den Boxen drückt. Damals in Dauerrotation auf MTV, ein Schelm, der eine Verbindung sieht, Mainman Ricky Warwicks Frau Vanessa Warwick war Moderatorin beim „Headbangers Ball“. Egal, der Song sorgt sofort für einen ordentlichen Bewegungsschub, kommt mit typischem GUNS `N ROSES-Swing. Dass man gern an Erfolge von US-Bands wie FASTER PUSSYCAT, L.A. GUNS oder CIRCUS OF POWER anknüpfen möchte, das war deutlich. Den verdienten Erfolg hatten die Schotten leider nicht, dazu breitete sich die Grunge-Welle schon zu weit aus.

So tänzelt man sich auch heute noch und wieder durch knackige Songs wie „Joy Bang One Time“, das kraftvoll groovende „Love Religion“, das schmutzige „Praying To The Red Light“, das zündende, angepunkte „Sin Against The Light“ mit catchy Refrain, der sich sofort wieder im Kopf festsetzt. Hier kann man auch mal an frühe MÖTLEY CRÜE denken. „Devil’s Toy“ kommt mit Cowboy-Einstieg, rockt dann mit ALICE COOPER-Flair nach vorn. Dass man immer mal an den Schockrocker denkt passt auch, da THE ALMIGHTY ihn 1991 auf seiner Tour supportet haben und nach der Tour dessen Gitarrist Pete Friesen bei den Schotten einstieg. Die verbleibenden Rocksongs mischen weiter die Bude auf, bis zum Rausschmeißer „Loaded“ mit einer ordentlichen Portion MOTÖRHEAD, da aber eher die melodischen Tage zu „Another Perfect Day“-Zeiten.

Da riecht nichts nach Haarspray und Nagellack, “Soul Destruction“ riecht nach Lederjacke und Schweiß!
Wofür “Soul Destruction“ aber auch steht, das sind zwei großartige Balladen. Bei „Bandaged Knees“ möchte man sich sofort zurückziehen, lasst mich allein, das Leben ist kein Streichelzoo! Man swingt gedankenversunken mit, findet sich selbst wieder, kein Kuschelrock, der Song gehört einem allein. Ebenso „Little Lost Sometimes“, auch hier ist sentimentales Eintauchen angesagt. Man mag ein wenig TESLA-Melancholie raushören. Man schunkelt vor sich hin und versinkt im Song. Und beide klingen total maskulin, so wie das ganze Album. Hier riecht nichts nach Haarspray und Nagellack, “Soul Destruction“ riecht nach Lederjacke und Schweiß!

“Soul Destruction“ ist auch heute noch Pflichtprogramm für alle, die auf Sleaze, schmutzigen Glam Rock und kraftvollen Hard Rock stehen. War man damals schon dabei, dann beamt es einen direkt zurück in die späten 80er bis Mitte 90. Ohne Nostalgiebonus präsentiert sich “Soul Destruction“ aber auch heute als zeitloses starkes Album, an dem man nicht vorbeikommt.

Das THE ALMIGHTY-Debüt „Blood, Fire And Love“ darf man ruhig auch mit einpacken
Das Debütalbum kam bei mir damals erst nach dem Zweitwerk ins Haus. „Resurrection Mutha“ startet mit erhabener Kirchenorgel, um dann als wilder MOTÖRHEAD-Rocker loszulegen. Der Sound und auch die Songs noch deutlich schmutziger bringt „Blood, Fire And Love“ alles mit, was es als Debüt erkennen lässt. Aber auch eine ungezügelte Energie, welche die damaligen US Sleaze-Bands so nicht hatten. Very british, indeed. Mit „Destroyed“ mit TWISTED SISTER-Touch, „Wild & Wonderful“, „Gift Horse“, dem groovenden „You’ve Gone Wild“ und „Power“ hat man einige hittige Songs dabei. „Lay Down The Law“ hätte auch von einer der typischen schwedischen Hard Rock-Bands kommen können.

Auch „Blood, Fire And Love“ wildert in den gleichen Ecken wie danach „Soul Destruction“. Noch etwas dreckiger und punkiger unterwegs, aber bereits deutlich Richtung Sleaze und dreckigem Glam Rock. Etwas MOTÖRHEAD, auch schon ALICE COOPER, TWISTED SISTER mochte Herr Warwick damals sicher auch. Vieles vom Debüt findet man später ähnlich auf „Soul Destruction“ wieder. Das Zweitwerk bleibt weiterhin Pflichtprogramm. Aber auch „Blood, Fire And Love“ macht sich gut in der Sammlung, sie kommt im schicken Dunkelrot.

Mai 2024 via Alma Mater Records erscheinen soll, wurde gemeinsam mit André Moraes im Audio Porto Studio in Porto Alegre aufgenommen und von Jim Morris im Morrisound Studio in Florida gemixt und gemastert. Die erste Single “Chapels Of The Unholy” ist für 12. April 2024 angekündigt.

Die Post Hardcore / Modern Metal-Band VENUES stellt ihren neuen Track “Radiate Me” mit einem Videoclip bei YouTube vor.

Zuletzt teilte die Gruppe das Stück “Oblivion” als Clip bei YouTube. Außerdem steht “Haunted House” als Musikvideo bei YouTube bereit.

Zuvor gab es im Herbst 2022 bereits die Single “Cravings”. Auch zu diesem Song hat die Gruppe einen Clip gedreht. Sängerin Lela kommentiert:

“‘Cravings’ wurde darüber geschrieben, sich von einer Sucht zu befreien. Dabei spielt es keine Rolle, ob es sich um Drogen, materielle Dinge oder Menschen handelt. Sich von dem zu befreien, was einen nur in den Abgrund treiben kann, ist nicht einfach, denn die Sucht trägt oft einen strahlenden Schleier, der die Augen vor der Realität verschließt. Diesen Schritt zu wagen und sich zu verabschieden, ist anstrengend und sehr mutig. ‘Cravings’ zu schreiben, hat mir Mut gemacht, und ich hoffe, dass es das auch für andere tut oder sie zumindest dazu inspiriert, sehr ehrlich zu sich selbst zu sein.”

Darüber hinaus stellten VENUES das Stück “Reflections” mit einem Musikvideo bei YouTube vor. Sängerin Lela erklärt die Bedeutung des Tracks:

“In ‘Reflections’ beschreiben wir den Prozess der Selbsterkenntnis. Wenn einem mit der Zeit immer wieder klar wird, dass nur man selbst derjenige ist, der einem wirklich helfen kann. Und man so lange einen Spiegel vorgehalten bekommt, bis man annehmen und verstehen kann, was man darin sieht. Denn nur so kann man über sich selbst hinauswachsen.“

“Reflections” folgt auf das Studioalbum “Solace“, das im Sommer 2021 via Arising Empire erschienen ist. Im Oktober sind VENUES dann zusammen mti FUTURE PALACE auf Tour.

It’s inevitable: you’re out at a holiday party having a good time, vibing with the tunes and libations, and helping yourself to some snacks. You’re feeling great and looking spiffy in your Joy Division shirt. They are your favourite band, after all. You look up. Oh – damn. Here comes that jerk. He’s always trying to prove to people that he’s an expert on all things goth and post-punk – and watch out! He’s making a beeline straight towards you.

 “Nice shirt,” he says mockingly. “But Are you a real fan of Joy Division?

“I’m a real fan,” you retort.

“Oh, REALLY. Well, prove it! Name three songs from Joy Division!”

These moments drive you nuts…that dreadful feeling of being put on the spot for simply wearing a garment supporting a musical act you enjoy. What’s the big deal, anyway? Why all the posturing? In the grand scheme of this bleak existence on the mortal plane, why is this even something we worry about?

Well, at this moment, it doesn’t matter because now you are trapped by a gatekeeper, and you gotta bite back hard.

“I can do one better,” you snap.

It’s true! Now you can, with Post-Punk.com’s handy primer to popular goth t-shirts. We have all the hits: Bauhaus, Joy Division, Sisters of Mercy – a plethora of information so well-researched that it will arm you against any know-it-all and their gang of snobby bullies, so they will never bother you again. You’ll unleash a fierce Sherlock Holmes torrent of information at them, complete with clouds of mathematical equations floating over your head.

“Jeez, it’s just a t-shirt,” they’ll say, cowering in fear, eyes glazed over in awe and slight boredom, wondering if they can lord their knowledge over the less-intense, trippin’ synth-pop or Italo-disco crowd. Good. That’s what you want—peace on earth in a cool shirt.

So which one are you wearing?

Bauhaus Bela Lugosi’s Dead Shirt:

The band Bauhaus, formed in 1978, was initially named Bauhaus 1919, referencing the German art school Bauhaus’s first year. They later shortened their name to simply Bauhaus. The emblem and typeface used by the band for promotion, including posters and record sleeves, were inspired by the art school’s design elements, notably the face designed by Oskar Schlemmer in 1922.

The band’s iconic single, “Bela Lugosi’s Dead,” is a tongue-in-cheek song that can be jokingly considered “Freebird”, or “Stairway to Heaven” for Goths, whose lengthy playtime is often used by many a Goth club DJ as an excuse for a bathroom break during a long set.

The sleeve and t-shirt’s design details include the Bauhaus band name in lowercase font, with “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” scrawled below in script. The cover art was taken from the 1926 film The Sorrows of Satan, directed by D. W. Griffith. And on the back, and another variant of the t-shirt, is Conrad Veidt as Cesare in a still from The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari,

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari stands as a monumental relic of silent cinema. This 1920 German film, a veritable smorgasbord of German Expressionism, was directed with a flair for the dramatic by Robert Wiene. Penned by the literary duo Hans Janowitz and Carl Mayer, it’s a story that wouldn’t feel out of place in a Kafkaesque nightmare or a Freudian case study.

The plot is deliciously straightforward, yet deviously complex. An insane hypnotist, portrayed with a zeal that suggests Werner Krauss may have missed his calling as a cult leader, manipulates a somnambulist to do his nefarious bidding. This sleepwalker, a role inhabited by Conrad Veidt, moves through the film like a puppet dangling on the strings of madness, his actions as unpredictable as a game of Russian roulette in a hurricane. The set designers threw geometry and physics out of the window, only to invite in their more interesting cousins: twisted lines, wonky angles, and shadows that seem to have a life of their own. It’s like Picasso and Dalí decided to collaborate on a home renovation show.

Joy Division’s “Unknown Pleasures”:

In the cryptic art gracing the album cover of Joy Division’s “Unknown Pleasures,” we’re privy to the traces left by the pulsar named CP1919+21— the very first of its kind to be noted. A pulsar comes about through the rather dramatic exit of a star considerably heftier than our modest sun. These grand stars, rather than fading gently into that good night, erupt in what they term a “supernova explosion.” This leaves behind a nearly flawless sphere with a diameter of about 10 km known as a neutron star. With their swift rotations and a magnetic allure a trillion-fold mightier than Earth’s, the cosmic dance of these celestial wonders beam with the persistence of a beacon. After a rather extensive voyage through the cosmos, CP1919+21’s radiant bursts make their presence known here, punctually every 1.34 seconds, although until that was made evident, for some time, scholars jokingly mused that it be from an alien civilization and called it LGM1 – for “Little Green Men.”

Student Jocelyn Bell Burnell stumbled upon this pulsar in 1967 amidst the ivy walls of Cambridge University. Much like a beacon in the vastness of night, it sends forth electromagnetic whispers that our radio telescopes eagerly snatch up. Each streak you discern represents a singular pulse. These pulses waver ever so slightly, given they’ve traipsed vast cosmic distances, occasionally hindered by the universe’s meddling interruptions.

The iconic album cover for Unknown Pleasures was designed by Peter Saville, using an image from The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Astronomy, which showed radio waves from pulsar CP 1919, the first radio pulsar ever discovered. This image was originally created by astronomer Harold Craft at the Arecibo Observatory for his PhD thesis in 1970. There is no mention of Saville using the graphic without permission from the copyright holder in the provided sources​​.

A scholarly fellow by the name of Harold D. Craft Jr., upon the submission of his 1970 dissertation titled “Radio Observations of the Pulse Profiles and Dispersion Measures of Twelve Pulsars,” happened to be engrossed in his work at the Arecibo Radio Observatory nestled in Puerto Rico.  Craft sketched the radio oscillations of CP 1919 and sent them to an illustrator friend at Cornell University.

The image made its appearance in The Cambridge Encyclopaedia of Astronomy in 1977. A young graphic arts student named Bernard Sumner happened to be in the library on his usual lunch break, thumbing through their science and art collections, and chanced upon the image. It deeply resonated with his synth tinkering, love of Kraftwerk, and for 2001: A Space Odyssey. Two years later, as his band Joy Division prepared to unveil their inaugural album, they sought the expertise of the Factory Records graphic artist Peter Saville to implement the image on the cover.

Imagine the surprise Harold Craft felt when he wandered into a record shop and happened upon his own illustration! He immediately purchased the album plus a matching poster. Decades later, millions of CP 1919 shirts, albums, totes, tats, memes, parodies, and even embroidered tributes bear those waves- an image conceived by a student, representing a deep-space radio…transmission.

The Sisters of Mercy T-Shirts:

Joy Division wasn’t the only band dipping into scientific illustration. Andrew Eldritch’s ‘star man’ logo for The Sisters of Mercy was inspired by Dr Henry Vandyke Carter’s illustration of the human cranium (occipito frontalis) from Gray’s Anatomy, perhaps keeping with the medical theme of naming their drum machine Doktor Avalanche? Through the Anatomy Act of 1832, which allowed dissection of unclaimed bodies from workhouse and hospital mortuaries, Henry Gray and Henry Vandyke devoted 18 months to research and work that laid the foundation for their groundbreaking book. This monumental work, eventually published in 1858, served as a “bible” for the medical profession until the advent of photography, and has never been out of print.

The band’s newer logo is a variation of the idea born from the Gray’s Anatomy one that made its debut in the liner notes of their debut single “Damage Done.”

Cribbing her signature look from silent screen vamps of the 1910s (like Theda Bara and Pola Negri); the tousled art student chic of the 1920s Bauhaus era, and Elizabeth Taylor’s striking eye makeup for the 1963 film Cleopatra, Siouxsie Sioux carved the template for trad-goth girls around the planet. Siouxsie’s eyes, in fact, became her trademark – her most popular shirts feature them alone.

The Cure’s “Boys Don’t Cry” T-shirt features a silhouette taken from their 1986 music video for the band’s iconic single. Die Doom / Black Metal / Darkwave-Band PONTE DEL DIAVOLO hat mit “Fire Blades From the Tomb” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist das erste Album der Italiener aus Turin, die davor drei EPs veröffentlicht haben.

“Fire Blades From the Tomb” wurde von Danilo Battocchio (LAST MINUTE TO JAFFNA) produziert und von Dimitrios Douvras (FUNERAL REVOLT) gemixt und gemastert. Das Cover-Artwork stammt von Bassistin Laura Nardelli. Erscheinen wird das Album am 16. Februar 2024 via Season of Mist. Vorab gibt es mit “Demone” einen Video-Clip.

Die Psychedelic / Punk Rock-Band VELCROS hat mit dem Video-Clip zu “Troubled Mind” eine zweite Single ihres kommenden Albums “Strange News From the Vault” veröffentlicht.

Im November 2023 hat die Band mit dem Video zu “Hollowed” eine erste Single des Albums veröffentlicht.

“Bei der Entwicklung des visuellen Konzepts für ‘Hollowed’ wählten wir einen besonderen Ansatz für die visuelle Umsetzung des Songs. Während der Text eine äußere Transformation erforscht, die von einem inneren Bedürfnis angetrieben wird, haben wir das Thema des Videos umgekehrt: die äußere Transformation stellt nun eine Bedrohung für das Innere dar. Diese Ambivalenz unterstreicht den Konflikt des Songs zwischen einer Wahlmöglichkeit und dem Gefühl der Machtlosigkeit”, erklärt das deutsche Trio aus Leipzig.

“Strange News From the Vault”, das von Magnus Wichmann in den Lala Studios gemixt und gemastert wurde, folgt der 2023er-EP “Spit Takes” nach und ist das erste Album der Band, welche aus Fabian Bremer, Nicolai Hildebrandt und Manuel Markstein besteht. Erscheinen wird das Album am 22. März 2024 via Crazysane Records.

Die Band START75 ist genauer genommen das Soloprojekt von Thorsten Voigt, bisher unterwegs u.a. als Gitarrist bei den Punks DER DICKE POLIZIST und Basser bei BLENDEN. Wie so viele Musiker hat sich der Kölner noch vor der Pandemie gefragt, wie es denn nun weiter geht. Heraus kam START75. Weniger wild, dabei gar nicht so weit weg von den anderen Bands, aber mit deutlichem Blick auf sein eigenes Leben und seine Vergangenheit. Unterstützt von gut gelaunt aufspielenden Mitmusikern. Eine persönliche Zeitreise, auf die man gern mitgeht.

So schiebt „Jetzt“ gleich Ska-punkig aus den Boxen. Es gibt fröhliche Trompeten und Strandparty mit einem kurzen Reggae-Break, ein echter gute Laune-Bringer. Die zieht sich durch das ganze Album. Man schunkelt zum nachdenklichen „Musik“, swingt cool mit zu „Aus grau wird weiß“. „Küss mich“ erinnert an einen sentimentalen Campino, Multi-Künstlerin Nathalie Voigt steigt ins Duett ein. „Der Mann im roten Shirt“ ist wohl Thorsten selbst, auch hier ist gute Laune angesagt. „Tod“ schiebt ordentlich nach vorn, reichlich verstorbene Helden werden betrauert. Ja, die echten Helden werden immer weniger. Schön wenn man alt genug ist, sie erlebt zu haben. „Kälte“ mit seinem Sprechgesang zeigt, dass Thorsten auch FALCO verehrt, aber sicher auch JOACHIM WITT.

„Start75“ verbreitet eine tolle Stimmung, da sollte mehr draus werden als nur ein kurzes Soloprojekt
Die Mischung ist recht bunt. Man denkt mal an allerlei deutsch singende Indie-Bands wie die SPORTFREUNDE STILLER, auch beim Gesang. Oft aber an punkige Bands wie die BROILERS, DIE KASSIERER (als die noch lustig waren), die immer lustige SONDASCHULE, KETTCAR und Co., aber auch mal an typische TOTE HOSEN Melodien oder Oldies von NORMAHL, SLIME usw. Ha, hier und da sogar an die coolen Bielefelder RANDALE! „Start75“ verbreitet eine tolle Stimmung, man findet sich oft wieder, die Texte sind persönlich und nachvollziehbar für die „früher war alles besser“-Jahrgänge. Trotz aller Anleihen hat der Mix eine eigene Note, da sollte mehr draus werden als nur ein kurzes Soloprojekt.

Occult-contemporary band Dee Fortune & Thought Group have been teasing their debut record as far back as 2021, when they first caught our eyes and ears with the atmospheric and soulful “Wish Upon“. While the world may have had other plans, the Brooklyn-based project have been waiting for their moment to strike, and the time is nigh. We’re honored to premiere “The Gate,” the next single from the band’s upcoming LP Wish Upon a Star, due out on February 6th, 2024 via Disko Obscura.

“The Gate” begins with a deep, infectious groove and an ominous synth line before catching fire and exploding into an ethereal barn burner. The track combines genres with the greatest of ease, with dashes of Sade, Everything But the Girl, A Certain Ratio, and Madonna’s underrated 90s era blended seamlessly with a myriad of house, trip-hop, and 4AD influences. Fortune’s vocals are passionate and powerful, and the music twists and turns in unexpected and delightful ways, featuring an acoustic guitar solo near the track’s rhythmic climax.

The video, directed by Joan Pope (Temple Ov Saturn), is a colorful, kaleidoscopic affair, tapping into the track’s deep circadian rhythms and burning embers. Watch below:

Das WISDOM TOOTH FESTIVAL geht 2024 in eine neue Runde: Gefeiert wird am 12. und 13. Juli 2023 am “Wildbachstadion” Hochstein in 86657 Bissingen. Tickets gibt es ab sofort zum Preis von 82,-€ über den offiziellen Festival-Shop im Vorverkauf.

Neu im Line-up sind nun ENSLAVE THE CHAIN. Außerdem wurden FIDDLER’S GREEN verpflichtet, die ganz oben auf dem Billing Platz nehmen. Sänger Nicky Calonne (Foto) hat die Modern Melodic Death Metal-Band NEKROGOBLIKON verlassen. Das gab die Formation in einem Statement auf Social Media bekannt. Calonne wolle in Zukunft andere Wege verfolgen, böses Blut gebe es nicht.

Seine Nachfolger stehen ebenfalls bereits fest: Wie schon auf der vergangenen US-Tour wird Band-Maskottchen John Goblikon selbst den Klargesang übernehmen. Für die harschen Vocals konnten NEKROGOBLIKON Dickie Allen (INFANT ANNIHILATOR) für sich gewinnen.

Obwohl der Autor dieses Album seit Mitte April regelmäßig hört, dauert es bis zum Advent, da er endlich darüber schreibt. Warum? Weiß er selbst nicht. Vielleicht ist jetzt die Zeit einfach da, da „O vento que lambe as mi​ñ​as feridas“ am besten wirkt. Eine Zeit der Einkehr und Zeit der Hoffnung, richtig? Doch was gibt es schon zu hoffen, in einer Welt der Kriege, der Klimakatastrophe, der gespaltenen Gesellschaft, jetzt da die Gräben immer größer werden? Eine Welt, in der geschrien und nicht zugehört wird, heute mehr als je zuvor?

SANGRE DE MUERDAGO, die fern der Religion sind, tragen mehr Ethik und Menschlichkeit in sich, als all die Würdenträger und die Prediger, die sich derzeit wieder anmaßen, über Güte und Liebe zu sprechen. Da hört der Verfasser lieber „O vento que lambe as mi​ñ​as feridas“, das sechste volle Album des spanisch-deutschen Neofolk-Kollektivs, weil es sich konträr zur Welt entwickelt: SANGRE DE MUERDAGO sind leiser geworden. Statt zu fünft, spielen sie auf diesem Album, das übersetzt „Der Wind, der meine Wunden leckt“ heißt und statt viel Dynamik und eklektischem Tanz gegen die Trauer, zentrieren sich Bandleader und Komponist Pablo Caamina Ursusson und seine beiden Mitstreiter auf sich selbst.

In einer Welt, die immer lauter wird, sind SANGRE DE MUERDAGO leiser geworden: „O Vento que Lambe as mi​ñ​as Feridas“ ist ein zutiefst menschliches Album.
Vielleicht fehlen deshalb die Worte, um das Album zu beschreiben und vielleicht ist es deshalb eine unverhältnismäßig lange Zeit im Schatten seiner beiden Vorgänger „Xuntas“ und „Noite“ gestanden, die – zugegeben – unerreicht bleiben. Aber die Qualität von „O vento que lambe as mi​ñ​as feridas“ ist eine ganz andere. Die Freiheit und Freigeistigkeit, die SANGRE DE MUERDAGO besingen, kann mittlerweile leise sein und ohne, dass die Message ihre Kraft verliert. Sie stellen sich subtil, aber selbstbewusst an die Seite von Menschen, die Leid erfahren haben („Wo sich Fuchs und Hase Gute Nacht sagen“, „Oda para as de corazón puro“), und sie tragen ihre Wunden offen und stolz zur Schau („Una paisaxe máis salvaxe“, „O vento que lambe as mi​ñ​as feridas“).

„O vento que lambe as mi​ñ​as feridas“ könnte dennoch den Schmerz übermächtig werden lassen, dank der traditionell galicianischen Stücke „Eu non quero ir a misa“ und „Eu chorei, chorei“ mit etwas mehr Dynamik und Wildheit sowie dem wundervollen Drehleier-Stück „Galska (7th polska of a 7th polska)“, das inklusive IRON MAIDEN-Referenz zum Tanzen einlädt, gibt es auch versöhnlichere Klänge. Auch der Ausflug in die Vergangenheit, die Neueinspielung von „Adeus meus amigos“ vom Debütalbum, ist ein wärmendes Stück, aller Melancholie zum Trotz. Hier zeigt sich auch, welche Entwicklung SANGRE DE MUERDAGO seither zurückgelegt haben: Das Spiel ist sicherer und akzentuierter und Pablo Caamiña Ursussons Stimme ist gereift und groß geworden, sodass das Stück noch mehr unter die Haut geht.

Ein Hoffnungsspender in einer dunklen Zeit: Mit „O Vento que Lambe as mi​ñ​as Feridas“ wärmen SANGRE DE MUERDAGO die Seele.
Dass die wenigsten Stücke ohne Rhythmen auskommen, dass die Basis klar Gitarre und Stimme ist, ergänzt von Nyckelharpa, Viola, Flöten und Drehleier, lässt viel Raum, um die Emotion zu transportieren, und dabei wird schnell deutlich: Diese Geschichten voller Schmerz sind auch Geschichten voller Hoffnung, auch wenn es gerade düster aussieht. SANGRE DE MUERDAGO bleiben authentisch in ihrer Musik und in dem, was sie erzählen und sorgen so für einen Hoffnungsschimmer in der Welt. Mut und Beständigkeit, Eigeninitiative und Authentizität – danach zu streben ist nicht immer einfach, aber daraus entsteht eben Schönheit, wie sie mit dem Cover von Rocco Lombardi ganz wundervoll unterstrichen wird.

Der dunkelste Tag des Jahres steht unmittelbar bevor, doch bis die Tage merklich heller werden dauert es noch eine Weile. SANGRE DE MUERDAGO wirken derweil und weit darüber hinaus wie ein wärmendes Licht und streicheln die Seele – diese Musik wirkt wie eine mitfühlende Umarmung. „O vento que lambe as mi​ñ​as feridas“ ist das Album, das der Mensch in diesen Zeiten braucht.

Die Metalcore-Band ANY GIVEN DAY hat mit “Come Whatever May” eine weitere Single ihres neuen Albums “Limitless” bei YouTube veröffentlicht. Der Track folgt auf den Song “H.A.T.E.“, eine Zusammenarbeit mit ANNISOKAY. Verfügbar ist außerdem ein Video zum Titelstück “Limitless“.

Zuvor gab es bereits den Track “Unbreakable” samt Musikvideo im Stream. Der Track folgt auf das Mitte Juni 2023 erschienene Stück “Get That Done“.

Die Death Metal-Band NECROTUM hat nach “Warped in Entrails” mit “Shattered Flow of Time” einen zweiten Track ihres kommenden Albums “Defleshed Exhumation” veröffentlicht. Es ist nach “Condemned to Burn” (2020) und “Undead Symbiosis” (2022) das dritte Album der produktiven Band aus Rumänien, die dazwischen auch Splits und EPs veröffentlicht haben.

“Defleshed Exhumation”, das mit einem Cover-Artwork von Slimeweaver ausgestattet wurde, wird am 22. Januar 2024 via Memento Mori erscheinen.

NECROTUM sind Gitarrist, Sänger und Bassist Filip Garlonta, Gitarrist Robert Brezean sowie Drummer Alex Tampu.

Palladium, Cologne, Germany 9th December 2023Mando Diao & Support: Kill Strings MANDO DIAO, one of the hottest bands from Sweden at the moment, visited Cologne as the last date of their tour. The fact that the band is celebrating its greatest successes in Germany alongside Sweden and has a large fan base was evident on this evening at the sold-out Palladium. Even the last corner of the hall was filled. The Swedes were joined by the German band KILL STRINGS as the musical support programme.

Das Thema des Albums konzentriert sich auf das Konzept der Resilienz und die innere Fähigkeit, gegen Selbstverteidigungsmechanismen und Identifikation mit der Natur zu kämpfen. “Digital Outcast” is the third album by German formation Darkness On Demand which is available now on Bandcamp and on CD via the Alfa Matrix webstore. After having released two albums on Repo Records ‘Falgalas’ and Gary Wagner signed to Alfa Matrix where they released the “Final Way” EP, the “Hang On (Winterhart remix)” and the “White Clouds” EP. The former Dance Or Die-members now strike back with “Digital Outcast”, a powerful, sophisticated and engaged EBM work. I talked about the album and other things with front man Gary Wagner.

Q: After a successful career as Dance Or Die you guys are now busy for a couple of years under the moniker Darkness On Demand. Do you perceive significant changes and/or evolutions between both bands or is just a natural evolution? And do you sometimes miss Dance Or Die?

The idea was to leave Dance Or Die as a Cult to start with the new material Falgalas had composed. The new songs are more Industrial and EBM and got much more melodies than before. The development of the new tracks started with our first longplayer “Post Stoneage Technology” continues the near future items. Just like the second one “Detoxination” which is concerned with man-machine themes we march on in that genre to keep Science Fiction alive. The astonishing thing was that the old fans expected the new start straight away. We still are the guys they know from stage and the short logo DOD is still up to date.

Q: I was surprised you signed to a Belgian label –Alfa Matrix. Why this move from a German label to a Belgian one and are there also plans for your side-projects?

We are definitely inspired by Front 242, Klinik and A Split Second which come from Belgium. We planned to get the thing more international.

The former label was more concerned with Germany which was pretty all right for the start. But the fact that we were popular in countries such as Sweden, Mexico, USA and the European East pushed us forward to be promoted worldwide. There were music colleges who recommended Alfa Matrix to start that enterprise. We are very happy about that and we know that the label believes in our work.

By the way we still work on our other project Winterhart which is Martial, Industrial and Dark-Folk orientated.

In Kraftwerk’s “Computerwelt” you heard the warning of observation and a transparent mankind. The more data they get the more you are controlled by them. The problem in Germany is that they consider you as a conspiracy freak when you know and talk about this. You can have an attitude but the mass medias tell you what your attitude has to be. Quite complicated for bands that came from Punk-Rock .

Q: How do you look back to the writing and production of “Digital Outcast”? Do you’ve any experiences and/or anecdotes you encountered that come directly into mind?

Gary: During the lockdown we found ourselves in ghost towns. Everything was closed, life stood still people were ill and lots of people died. It was a terrible time, we hope it won’t repeat. But in somehow it changed the attitude towards the government. Some were absolutely into the rules of authority, the others questioned it like they did before. Feelings such as loneliness and depressions came to our mind and that influenced our album conception.

One day during that period they closed Schleswig Holstein after we finished our singing recording and I had to leave this Bundesland for a return to Berlin. What a strange situation…

The EP “White Clouds” exactly describes this time I mentioned before.

Q: “White Clouds” sounds as a solid addendum to “Digital Outcast”. Is there anything more you want to say about the EP?

Gary:The EP “White Clouds” exactly describes this time I mentioned before. In some of these happy pills you find a little picture of grey clouds turning to white to take the medicine regularly. Sometimes pretty necessary to avoid a serious illness. Anyway… we still stand for the idea to make great Clubmixes on our EP’s. The dancefloor is still an important fact to communicate with the fans, besides the live activities.

Q: Gary and Heiko, I think you’re now working together for thirty years –or even more. What makes the chemistry between both of you and how do you perceive each other as ‘artist’ and the person behind the artistic creation?

Gary:As I already mentioned we both played the Dance Or Die shows since 1993. After a long break in the early 20th we decided to make new music together. Falgalas created lots of material with Classic sounds and instruments. We added real acoustic guitars and trumpets to form Winterhart. We released our albums on Danse Macabre Records. But then, once upon a time we were a little frustrated that Dance Or Die stood still. Therefore we found Darkness On Demand to return to Body and Industrial music.

Those days Falgalas lived in the middle of Berlin and we worked together at new songs every afternoon. Then he moved to Tönning near the North-Sea und built-up a New Studio he calls Dreiklangstudio. So I got to travel to the North  for singing recordings. Less helter skelter than in Berlin. Silence enough for our future stories to keep the Dark Side alive. We turn Future into Reality

Es ist nach einer selbstbetitelten EP das erste Album des US-amerikanischen Duos aus Portland, welches aus Kyle House (DECREPISY, Ex-ACEPHALIX, Ex-POISON IDEA, Ex-VASTUM) und Charles Koryn (CHTHONIC DEITY, DECREPISY, FUNEBRARUM, Ex-VOIDCEREMONY) besteht.

“Self // Wound” wurde von Greg Wilkinson in den Earhammer Studios gemastert und mit einem Cover-Artwork von Adam Medford ausgestattet. Erscheinen wird das Album am 1. März 2024 via Chaos Records. Vorab gibt es den Track “Violence” zu hören.
