Die Norweger KHOLD melden sich mit einem weiteren düsteren Black Dark Metal Werk zurück. „Du dømmes til Død“ wird am 22. März 2024 über Soulseller Records auf CD, LP und in digitalen Versionen veröffentlicht. Aufgenommen, gemischt und gemastert wurde es von Andy La Rocque in den Sonic Train Studios, Schweden. Ein erster Song mit dem Titel „Vanviddfaren“ ist nun anhörbar.

Das achte Album der Band ist ein Konzeptalbum über Schergen und verschiedene Menschen, die im Laufe der norwegischen Geschichte zur Todesstrafe verurteilt wurden. Musikalisch weiß man, was man geboten bekommt: heruntergestimmter und mittelschneller Metal ohne jegliche Kompromisse. Groovig, melodisch und jede Menge harter Riffs – KHOLD klingt wie nichts anderes, und genau so soll es auch sein. Und das wird auch so bleiben.

Die Thrash Metal-Band SYLOSIS hat mit “Absent” einen weiteren Videoclip bei YouTube veröffentlicht. Entnommen ist das Stück wie der Clip “Descent” dem aktuellen Album “A Sign Of Things To Come” (2023). Eine Remix-Version des Tracks von ZETRA ist darüber hinaus auf den gängigen Streaming-Plattformen abrufbar.

Außerdem stellte die Formation den Titeltrack mit einem Video bei YouTube vor. “A Sign Of Things To Come” ist die dritte Single, zuvor teilten SYLOSIS ein Musikvideo zu “Poison For The Lost” bei YouTube  sowie einen Clip zu “Deadwood”.

Produziert wurde die neue Platte von Bandkopf Josh Middleton (ex-ARCHITECTS) zusammen mit Scott Atkins. Die Kooperation beschreibt der Gitarrist und Sänger wie folgt:

“Es ist das erste Mal, dass ich mich selbst produzieren lasse; ich habe brutale Kritik auf mich genommen und mich dazu gedrängt, die beste Gesangsleistung meiner Karriere abzuliefern. Ich bin ein großer Fan von progressiven und langen Alben, aber ich war während des gesamten Prozesses rücksichtslos zu mir selbst. Ich denke, das zeigt sich im Endergebnis der Platte!”

 “Heavy Is The Crown ist die erste einer Trilogie von Singles, die wir in diesem Jahr veröffentlichen – diese Songs sind während der Arbeit am nächsten SYLOSIS-Album entstanden und obwohl sie nicht für das Album geeignet waren, sind sie perfekt für einige eigenständige Banger. Schon Ende 2021 teilten SYLOSIS einen einzelnen Song:  “Immovable Stone” bei YouTube. Entstanden ist der Track während derselben Aufnahmesessions, aus der auch der letzte Track “Worship Decay” hervorging. Zuletzt veröffentlichten SYLOSIS Anfang 2020 das Album “Cycle Of Suffering“.

Die Folk Metal-Band KORPIKLAANI stellt ihr zwölftes Album “Rankarumpu” mit einem Musikvideo zu “Saunaan” bei YouTube vor. Das Stück wurde von Neuzugang Olli Vänskä geschrieben, wie dieser erläutert:

“Ich komponierte ‘Saunaan’ schon Monate bevor ich überhaupt wusste, dass ich bei Korpiklaani spielen würde. Ich arbeitete an einem peppigen Folk-Metal-Song und wenig überraschend war KORPIKLAANI – Kings of Folk Metal – definitiv einer der Einflüsse.

Dann führte ein Gedanke zum anderen und plötzlich spielte ich tatsächlich für Korpiklaani und wir sprachen über Material für ein kommendes Album. Eines Abends, während einer Fahrt mit dem Festivalbus, spielte ich den Jungs ein paar Demotracks vor, und Jonne gab mir sofort ein dickes Lob. Wir haben ein bisschen am Arrangement gearbeitet und das Endergebnis ist ein ziemlich guter Song!”

“Rankarumpu” wurde mit Produzent Janne Saksa aufgenommen und erscheint am 5. April 2024 via Nuclear Blast.

Sometimes, a band needs an internal shakeup to reignite their creative fire. In a recent twist of fate, the Belgian post-punk ensemble Whispering Sons found themselves in the midst of a seismic reconfiguration. Drummer Sander Pelsmaekers, sidelined by nerve damage, discovered a fresh muse in the world of synths. Meanwhile, bassist Tuur Vandeborne took the reins behind the drum kit, and the band’s long-time sound wizard, Bert Vliegen—an accomplished producer in his own right—picked up the bass guitar. Guitarist and mastermind Kobe Lijnen, alongside the enchanting vocalist and wordsmith Fenne Kuppens, maintained their roles but embarked on transformative journeys to reinvent their artistic approach for The Great Calm. As the lineup underwent this tectonic shift, these dynamic changes propelled them into a creative haven within their own unique blueprint.

“I think the most important thing about us is that we met as a group of friends and started the band,” notes Kuppens, “this is something that came out of a love for music and an eagerness to play together. And now we’re 10 years further. Not that much has really changed. The dynamics are always the same. We’re very close to each other, we’re very good friends, so to switch things around was easy.”

As a result,Whispering Sons’ latest single, Walking, Flying, represents a refreshing departure from their previous work, showcasing a newfound sense of hope and optimism from the Belgian quintet. Both in its musical composition and lyrical themes, the track revolves around a singular concept.

The song describes a transformative and uplifting experience, emphasizing a profound personal change and clarity. It portrays a sense of liberation and renewal, as obstacles are left behind and the world appears in a new, positive light. The lyrics convey a journey from a state of obscurity to one of visibility and self-discovery, highlighted by references to light, clear skies, and a cleaned-up city. This newfound clarity and freedom are celebrated as the narrator feels seen and rejuvenated, ready to embrace a beautiful day. The foundation of a robust and unwavering rhythm section anchors the verses, while the vocals and accompanying instruments gracefully orbit around it, engaging in a harmonious interplay that propels the song towards an exhilarating chorus.

“Walking, Flying was the first song we tried out live while still in the process of writing the album,” singer Fenne Kuppes explains. “As a result, it not only became a band’s favorite to perform, but also served as a reference point for the rest of the record.”

The music video directed by Heleen Declercq presents a series of surreal vignettes. It features an enigmatic building covered in fabric, reminiscent of the art installations by Christo and Jeanne-Claude. In this setting, the band interacts with and exalts the fabric-covered structure with dance, creating an intriguing visual narrative that complements the song’s themes of transformation and clarity. The use of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s style adds an artistic and mysterious layer to the video, enhancing its curious qualities.

Walking, Flying is Whispering Sons’ third and final taste of their forthcoming new album, The Great Calm, out on February 23 via [PIAS] Recordings.

Following the dark, expansive power of 2018’s ‘Image‘ and the minimalistic ‘Several Others‘ in 2021, Whispering Sons’ third album, ‘The Great Calm,’ signifies a complete reimagining and reconsideration of their musical direction. This evolution, however, has given rise to a collection of songs that still resolutely and distinctly bear the band’s signature imprint.

Recorded within a brisk four-week timeframe — two weeks at the Audioworkx studio near Eindhoven, Holland, followed by the final touches in early 2023 using a makeshift setup on Vlieland, a quaint Dutch island nestled just off the North Sea coast — the potency, vitality, and artistic splendor underpinning the creation of The Great Calm permeate each of its 12 tracks.

“Before, the songs were finished in my head but not in a way the group could grasp the full meaning of the idea,” Vliegen explains. “This time Bert and I worked on the demos for a couple of months before we sent them to the rest of the band. Then Fenne could start writing lyrics.” A native Flemish/Dutch speaker (“although speaking isn’t my forte,” she suggests bashfully), a study of literature at university led Kuppens to adopt English as her songwriting tongue. “I’m not really a writer, per se, I find the idea of getting your thoughts onto paper really hard,” she confesses. “It can be a big struggle for me, but I start writing when I’ve got a deadline or something I have to do like a song, so I only write for the band really.”

Encouragement then came from an unexpected quarter, American poet Louise Glück. “The funny thing was that when I finished that first song, I took up a book of poetry by Louise Glück and there were exactly the same themes and images in those poems,” recalls Kuppens. “I was like, ‘this can’t be a coincidence’ so I started exploring that and I created a framework, a story for the whole record. Once I had a story figured out, I let go of it because I felt it also limited the writing, you don’t want to get stuck within a framework. But once I got through that process the ideas for each song just became very clear.” The creative connection to Glück went deeper still, with the poet – inadvertently – helping to name the album.

“There was just one verse where she wrote about the great calm and I was like, ‘wow!’ It felt very cinematic,” Kuppens adds. “I like the sense of grandeur in a phrase like The Great Calm. It just really describes what the characters in the songs are striving for, this sense of peace and calmness, but it’s also something that’s probably non-existent too because it sounds too much like a dream. It’s just too big a concept and I find that scale funny but in a serious way. So it fits the album because everything is about moving forward. The record is more hopeful, there’s more beauty in it. Our last album was very dark and always very destructive. I guess this one is still a bit destructive, but there’s hope in that destruction.”

25 Jahre gibt es nun schon die GOLDEN APES aus Berlin und zwei feste Konstante ziehen sich dabei durch die Bandgeschichte. Zum einen wäre da das Lebrecht-Bruderpaar und zum anderen das klare Bekenntnis zum klassischen Gothic-Dark-Rock der alten Schule. Das heißt aber auch nicht, dass die GOLDEN APES nie über den „Tellerrand“ geschaut, aber eben dadurch auch eine Menge Personal über die Jahre verschlissen haben. Nach dem letzten Album „Kasbek“ stand mal wieder ein kompletter Besetzungswechsel an, von den zwei Brüdern natürlich mal abgesehen. Das neue Werk mit dem programmatischen Namen „Our Ashes At The End Of The Day“ bietet trotzdem wieder 8 absolut typische GOLDEN APES-Songs, die schon alleine durch den markanten voluminös-tiefergelegten Gesang von Peer Lebrecht einfach unverkennbar sind. Die bei den letzten beiden Alben stark vorhandenen Indie Rock-Einflüsse sind jetzt deutlich zurückgefahren worden bzw. einer gewisser Post Rock-Atmosphäre gewichen. Das Album ist wie ein sich elegant schlängelnder melancholischer Fluss, in seinen Nuancen jedoch abwechslungsreich zwischen Schwere und Leichtfüßigkeit tänzelt. Alles in allem ist das Ganze immer noch knietief im leicht abgewetzten samtig glänzenden Gothic Rock verwurzelt und so kann oder besser sollte dieses Genre 2024 klingen! Die meisten Bands würden übrigens nach 25 Jahren locker eine Best Of raus hauen, jedoch die GOLDEN APES veröffentlichen aus diesem feierlichen Anlass einfach eine Tribute-Compilation und noch dazu für einen guten Zweck! Die Erlöse von dem nur digital über Bandcamp erhältlichen Sammlung „Scattered Light“ gehen nämlich an den Kinderhospiz Sonnenhof, auf der 20 befreundete Bands Songs der GOLDEN APES neu interpretieren. Neben mir unbekannten Projekten sind darunter mit GIRLS UNDER GLASS, WHISPERS IN THE SHADOW und NO MORE auch einige große Namen der Szene zu finden, welche den GOLDEN APES ihre Aufwartung zum Geburtstag machen. Ihr größtes Geschenk machen sie sich aber selber mit „Our Ashes At The End Of The Day“ – großartiges Album, coole Band und Punkt aus! (Marco Fiebag)

Gitarrist Tommy Johansson (Foto) hat seinen Ausstieg aus SABATON bekannt gegeben, um sich künftig stärker anderen Projekten widmen zu können. Das gab die Power-Metal-Formation in einem Beitrag auf ihren Social-Media-Kanälen bekannt.

Einen Nachfolger haben die Schweden noch nicht ernannt, Tommy Johansson will diesen jedoch noch selbst anlernen. Das Statement von SABATON zum Nachlesen:

“Nach 7 fantastischen Jahren in der Band hat unser Gitarrist Tommy beschlossen, Sabaton zu verlassen, um seinen eigenen Weg zu gehen. Wir wünschen ihm nichts als das Beste auf seinem Weg. Wir waren eine enge Familie und werden ihn weiterhin bei den Abenteuern, die ihn in der Zukunft erwarten, unterstützen.

Tommy ist seit 2016 in der Band, aber er ist ein enger Freund von Sabaton seit unserem ersten Treffen am Ende eines Konzerts im Jahr 2005. Als ein geschätztes Mitglied der Band hat er zu unzähligen unsterblichen Erinnerungen beigetragen.

Tommys Ausstieg bei Sabaton wird nicht sofort wirksam. Er wird bleiben, um sicherzustellen, dass die Übergabe an unseren nächsten Gitarristen reibungslos verläuft.

Während ein kleiner Teil seines großen Herzens immer bei Sabaton bleiben wird, wissen wir alle, dass er seinen Träumen folgen muss.

Auch wenn wir nicht jeden Tag neben ihm im Tourbus aufwachen werden, sind wir uns sicher, dass sich unsere Wege in Zukunft noch viele Male kreuzen werden, sowohl auf als auch abseits der Bühne.Flieg auf deinen Flügeln und Saiten Bruder!

“Meine lieben Freunde!

Nach 7 glorreichen Jahren Heavy Metal habe ich beschlossen, als Gitarrist von Sabaton zurückzutreten. Das war die schwerste Entscheidung, die ich in meinem ganzen Leben getroffen habe.

Wie viele von euch vielleicht wissen, mache ich eine Menge Dinge außerhalb von Sabaton. Ich spiele in einer anderen Band, trete mit verschiedenen Künstlern auf und habe eine Karriere als Sänger, die ich jahrelang zurückgestellt habe, um mich auf Sabaton zu konzentrieren.

Nachdem ich das sieben Jahre lang gemacht habe, fühle ich, dass es an der Zeit ist, meinem Herzen zu folgen.

Das bedeutet, dass ich nicht mehr mit meinen Brüdern von Sabaton auf Tour gehen werde und dass ich euch alle, liebe Sabaton-Fans, auf den kommenden Touren mit der Band nicht mehr treffen werde.

Ich werde nie aufhören, Musik zu machen. Ich werde weiterhin mit Majestica und anderen Projekten touren, aber natürlich nicht auf dem gleichen Niveau wie Sabaton. Ich bin mir sicher, dass ich euch liebe Fans in Zukunft wieder auf der Straße treffen werde.

Meine Brüder bei Sabaton und die beste Crew der Welt werden für immer meine zweite Familie sein und ich werde es vermissen, Zeit mit all diesen wunderbaren Menschen zu verbringen. Wir hatten jeden Tag so viel Spaß zusammen. Ich habe so viel über das Leben, die Musik und das Touren gelernt, was ich nirgendwo anders gelernt hätte.

Ein riesiges Dankeschön an all die lieben Sabaton-Fans, die mich 2016 als neuen Gitarristen akzeptiert haben. Ich bin mir sicher, dass ihr auch die Person akzeptieren werdet, die nach mir den Posten übernimmt.Ich wünsche euch allen alles Gute und wir sehen uns bald wieder!Cheers!

Die Psychedelic Rock-Band TIGERS ON OPIUM hat mit “Psychodrama” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist das erste Album der US-Amerikaner aus Portland. Der Albumtitel nimmt Bezug auf eine strukturierte Form der Therapie, bei der eine Person ein persönliches Problem oder einen persönlichen Konflikt dramatisiert, in der Regel vor einer Gruppe anderer Therapieteilnehmer. Die anderen Teilnehmer nehmen in der Regel an dem Drama teil, obwohl sich jede Aufführung auf die Anliegen einer einzelnen Person konzentriert.

Frontmann Juan Carlos Caceres sagt: “Als ich auf die Idee der Psychodrama-Therapie stieß, begann ich darüber nachzudenken, dass wir als Gesellschaft so viele gemeinsame Erfahrungen machen, die gegenwärtig passieren oder passiert sind, und wie sie sowohl unser individuelles als auch unser kollektives Bewusstsein prägen. Musik war schon immer eine Form der Therapie, nicht nur für mich, sondern für eine große Anzahl von Menschen auf der Welt. Ich begann, dies als Idee für das Album zu konzipieren, weil ich dachte, dass wir alle so viele Verbindungen zu großen und kleinen Ereignissen in der Zeit haben und sie im Allgemeinen ähnlich interpretieren. Wie bei einer Psychodrama-Therapiesitzung begann ich mir vorzustellen, wie sich die Songs über diese verschiedenen Momente abspielen könnten… Fast wie Vignetten oder Schnappschüsse des Lebens, wobei der Song die Rolle des Individuums spielt und die Zuhörer die Rolle der Gruppe.”

“Psychodrama” wird am 1. März 2024 via Heavy Psych Sounds erscheinen. Vorab gibt es nach dem Video-Clip zu “Sky Below My Feet” mit “Paradise Lost” nun einen zweiten Track zu hören.

GHØSTKID haben einen neuen Song mit dem Titel “FSU” bei YouTube veröffentlicht. Entnommen ist das Stück dem kommenden Album “Hollywood Suicide”, das am 22. März 2024 via Century Media auf CD, Vinyl sowie digital erscheinen wird.

Zuletzt hatte die Gruppe einen Clip zu ihrer Single “Heavy Rain” hochgeladen. Das Video verbindet die Band mit einer Trigger-Warnung: Es seien Szenen häuslicher Gewalt zu sehen.

Zuvor veröffentlichte die Formation ein Musikvideo zu ihrem Song “Hollywood Suicide”. Die Aufnahmen stammen von der vergangenen Tour mit BAD OMENS im Februar 2023. Die Single selbst war bereits Anfang des Jahres veröffentlicht worden.

Für Produktion und Mix der Stücke zeichnet Sky van Hoff verantwortlich. Das Mastering übernahm Jens Dreesen.
