28.01.2024 - MILA MAR :: Neue Single „Kore“

Buy: https://drylandrec.lnk.to/lQEuud

28.01.2024 - NEW MODEL ARMY – Unbroken

28.01.2024 - GIVRE :: Melodic Historic Black Metal from Canada

28.01.2024 - Chicago Darkwave Trio French Police Debut Video For “Jetta Negro” — New Album “Bully” Out Now!

Me sudan las manos
Cuando haces algo
Te gustan mis gafas
Me das un beso largo
Chicago darkwave trio, French Police, have announced the release of their new album, “BULLY,” and with it comes the debut of a video for Jetta Negro.

In this captivating Spanish track channeling the morose musings of Molchat Doma, KINO and Lebanon Hanover, we find a seamless blend of anticipation and a quest for authenticity. The thrill of new love stirs a tangible anxiety, vividly described in the lyrics as ‘palms slick with sweat,’ sparked by a partner’s actions. Yet, amidst this tension, there’s comfort in the gentle affirmations received, be it through compliments on personal accessories like eyewear or the warmth of a lingering embrace. And yet – beneath these passionate interactions lies a turbulent search for self-discovery, marked by a deep desire to fully embrace one’s true self. This inner journey faces obstacles, with echoes of restraint from their partner, casting a pall over the narrator’s quest for the truth within.

Directed by Christian Morales, the video for Jetta Negro strikingly evokes a post-Soviet perspective on mundane existence, to the extent that one might be surprised to find it set in Chicagoland rather than Moscow. The viewer is transported through a frosty suburban landscape, accompanying the band on brief cigarette pauses and a journey through the remnants of the American Dream. It presents a stark scene—chilly, snow-laden, utterly lacking in splendour; a monotonous expanse. Yet, within this bleakness, there emerge fleeting glimpses of beauty, bonds of friendship, and moments of camaraderie.

Watch the video below:

Brian Flores doesn’t merely perform on this latest album; he confronts his past demons. “This album is dedicated to the bullies of my past,” he states, reimagining “BULLY” as a tale of triumph and empowerment. This bold declaration highlights the band’s consistent courage in facing their darkest challenges, unafraid to sport shades in the darkest hours.

27.01.2024 - Sharpen Your Scalpel — Texas Darkwavers Urban Heat Debut Video for New Single “Sanitizer”

The world is gonna kill you, but you’re never gonna quit.
It’s open heart surgery; there’s nothing wrong with it,
but your operating table needs a sanitizer hit.
Urban Heat’s Sanitizer is a curious concoction, indeed. It’s as if the sombre soul of ’80s goth had a raucous rendezvous with the spirited darkwave zest of the present, each bringing their own bottle to the party. This track pilfers with panache from the bygone era’s treasure trove, sprucing it up with a dash of modern malaise to suit our current tastes. The affair culminates in a melody that could very well animate a soirée set in the years yet to come, replete with choruses that cling like a well-mixed martini, lyrics that tickle the intellect while flirting with dissent, and transitions so smooth, they’d put the finest silk to shame.

Not only do the seamless arpeggios and Horstmann’s ethereal vocal delivery capture the imagination;Urban Heat’s deft juggling act of blending melodic synths with a bass line packs a punch, evoking a curious cocktail of feelings. One moment you’re basking in the warm glow of nostalgia, the next you’re mulling over the existential dread of the present, only to be lifted into a hopeful gaze toward the horizon.Urban Heat pilots this roller coaster with the precision of a seasoned acrobat, leaving the audience teetering delightfully between epochs – and emotions.

Watch the video for “Sanitizer” below:

Urban Heat formed in 2019 when multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Jonathan Horstmann enlisted Kevin Naquin and Paxel Foley to form a live show based on his analogue sound design.  The three Austin music scene vets decided to form a supergroup of diverse rock artists.“There’s not a ton of other Black musicians in Austin who play rock, and having that representation was important to me. I didn’t wanna be the only Black artist in an otherwise all-white band,” confides Horstmann.Urban Heat had a remarkable year in 2023, marking a significant milestone in their career. Joining the ranks of Artoffact, they re-released their beloved ‘Wellness’ EP on CD, dropped fresh tracks, and embarked on extensive tours across North America. Their dynamic presence at Cruel World Festival, sharing the stage with legends like Siouxsie and Iggy Pop, was just the beginning. Their hit “Have You Ever?” clinched the Austin Music Award for “Song of the Year,” and their energetic showcases at SXSW, coupled with two North American tours supporting Vision Video, featuring numerous sold-out shows, underscored their rising status. This culmination of achievements led to Urban Heat being honored as ‘Best Band’ by Austin Monthly’s Best of ATX, cementing their place in the music scene.

27.01.2024 - Listen to East Bay Area Death Rock Outfit Normal Weirds’ Debut Album “Same Difference”

East Bay Area deathrock band Normal Weirds (Justin Harlow, Trey Weird, Merry Baker-Harlow, special guest Nick aka Motherboard; Emma Weird). have finally released their anticipated 10-song debut album, Same Difference.

Same Difference speaks to the zombification process of modern times, where the vibrant essence of who we once were is dulled by the monotonous grind of adulthood and its myriad unwanted responsibilities. We begin in the present, where clarity reigns and the shadows of a tumultuous past have been dispelled through the lens of 20/20 vision. We embark upon a journey towards liberation from the chains that once bound the spirit in darkness. However, as the story unfolds, it subtly retraces its steps, hinting at the gradual erosion of self that life’s relentless march can inflict. Despite the disillusionment with the rites of passage into maturity, there’s an underlying resilience, a tacit acknowledgment that these trials, however begrudgingly faced, are navigated nonetheless.

The album unfolds as an unintended reflection of Vocalist/Bassist Justin Harlow’s life, artfully spun in reverse. This musical journey, infused with the spirit of iconic bands like the Pixies, Joy Division, Fugazi, and Peter and the Test Tube Babies, offers a unique storytelling approach. Through this reverse chronology, listeners are invited to peel back the layers of Harlow’s experiences, tracing his path from the present back to the origins, all while the band’s influences echo in the background, shaping the soundtrack of his autobiography.

“I feel like the album is about growing up in almost changing like a metamorphosis to become a better person that I was never supposed to become due to my circumstances and past. I think it’s ultimately about defying the odds and breaking free off the path that was paved for me, becoming better then those who came before me.”

Same Difference is now available on Bandcamp and all streaming platforms. The album was engineered, mixed, and produced by Ryan Clark.

27.01.2024 - TR/ST Releases Surprise EP and Cover of Pet Shop Boys’ “Being Boring” with Jake Shears

I came across a cache of old photosAnd invitations to teenage parties“Dress in white” one said, with quotationsFrom someone’s wife, a famous writerIn the nineteen-twenties
Robert Alfons, known professionally as TR/ST and previously Trust, made a striking entrance in 2010, resembling a sophisticated anomaly within the underground music work. His distinctive fusion of dark electronic pop quickly set him apart, cultivating a dedicated following that cherished the unconventional. Alfons masterfully combines brooding rhythms with an enigmatic allure.

As TR/ST ascended through a whirlwind of international tours, the Toronto titan settled in the scenic sprawl of Los Angeles for the past decade as his project transformed into a pillar of dark dance music. With the release of ‘Joyland‘ in 2014 and the ambitious two-part ‘The Destroyer‘ in 2019, Alfons navigated the complexities of the music world with finesse, continually expanding the boundaries of his creative vision.

Today marks the debut of TR/ST’s first full release through Dais Records. The EP opens with the previously debuted Robrash, which is an electronic odyssey characterized by vibrant synth basslines and robotic vocal effects, all culminating in a memorable hook. The lyrics depict a journey of longing and introspection, reminiscing about past experiences and questioning their self-worth in the context of a relationship. They invoke imagery of riding with crows and calling light, symbolizing a search for companionship and clarity.

Run, a pulsating new anthem for the dance floor, is graced by the presence of hyperpop sensation Cecile Believe. The lyrics explore themes of stagnation and introspection, with a reflection on unchanging situations and personal monotony. Somtimes a creative outlet just doesn’t do it for ya, sometimes we simply need an escape or cataclysmic change. Adding to the diversity is Evercall, a track that ventures into the realm of the ethereal with its delicate, nearly-ambient textures.

TR/ST also does a faithful cover of Pet Shop Boys’ iconic 1990 hit Being Boring, reimagined with the distinctive falsetto vocals of Jake Shears from Scissor Sisters. Being Boring is a reflective track inspired by a quote from Zelda Fitzgerald about people not being dull as long as they are curious. It touches on themes of nostalgia, the passage of time, and the bittersweet nature of memories. Neil Tennant was partly inspired by his own experiences and the loss of friends to the AIDS epidemic, which adds a poignant depth to the lyrics.

Completing the lineup is Slug, which delves into feelings of insignificance and emotional turmoil, juxtaposed with advice to remain kind and to cleanse negativity. It reflects on the struggle with love’s absence and the desire for solitude, amidst a backdrop of perceived betrayal and the need for emotional closure.

Alfons confirms he is in the studio working on a new album, expanding their singular sound in ways both cinematic and surprising: “Bigger, better, beautiful, and buried in mud.”

26.01.2024 - Special: Top 10 2023 - Electronic Gothic Music album of the year

In 2023, in some marvelous way mostly projects from France showed themselves on the Gothic Electronic’s scene top. This would be easy to assume, given the geographical roots of the currently popular Coldwave genre, but the French musicians showed themselves not only in this style. In general, the Gothic scene unlike most other areas of the dark scene continues to develop due to the rapid revival of Coldwave, which is good news. And even if someone may not really like Coldwave in its pure form, its rise became an impact for classic Synth-Goth and Gothic Electro to return to the Olympus of the dark scene, as it was in the 2000s.

26.01.2024 - Denver Darkwave Outfit Devoratus Debut Video for “Lost”

Las noches sin sueño
Viendo asia el techo
Como puedo sobrevivir
From the not-so-sunless depths of Denver, Colorado, dark post-punk outfit Devoratus is making a rather dramatic return, poised to cast a stylishly gloomy pall over the indie darkwave scene with Lost, a new single from the band’s EP Amissus. With a flair for the melodramatic and a bilingual twist, this eerily atmospheric number hits hard.

The lyrics to Lost express a deep sense of loss and emptiness, conveying the struggle of feeling disconnected and longing for happiness. Sleepless nights and a sense of survival highlight the pain of missing someone, while acknowledging the need to move on for personal well-being. The narrator grapples with the paradox of missing the feeling of happiness more than the person themselves.

The melancholic essence of the track is mirrored by a somber video that portrays an evening out, which, far from being joyous, unfolds with a wildness tinged with despair. The narrative culminates in a poignant symbol of transience and loss: the stub of a discarded cigarette, the sole remnant of the night’s fleeting revelry.

26.01.2024 - Disorder, Insomnia, and Dancing — Chicago Post-Punk Duo Iron Years Debut Video for “Control”

Sometimes, when we must confront life’s adversities head-on, we need an anthem for resilience and empowerment. At its core, Control by Chicago’s Iron Years serves as a clarion call to muster the courage and resolve necessary to initiate transformative change in one’s circumstances. The emotive lyrics and haunting melody of this synth-driven post-punk fever dream take us on a stirring journey from the depths of despair to the heights of determination. It’s not just about the struggle; it’s about that transformative moment of realization that sparks a personal renaissance. Ultimately, we possess agency over our destinies – even in the face of daunting obstacles – and consciously choose to steer our lives towards a path of our own design. While we may not control every aspect of our journey, we have the power to shape its direction and its outcome.

The video for Control marks the second directorial venture of Milo Mendoza and features a compelling acting and dance performance by Amanda Saucedo. This short film is a hypnogogic dive into the turbulent realm of anxiety and sleep disorders, exploring their dominion over the mind’s purgatorial spaces.

Watch the video for “Control” below:

Iron Years hails from Little Village on Chicago’s South Side, a neighbourhood celebrated for its cultural diversity. In this milieu of musical variety and urban realities, the group’s love for music intersects with the unavoidable presence of violence, inspiring them to carve out a space for creativity. Their art is an expression of resilience, drawing from the rich palette of Latin American rhythms, as well as post-punk, freestyle, synth-pop, house, industrial and many types of dance music.

Reflecting the vibrant sounds of Little Village evenings and capturing the essence of music flowing from neighborhood boomboxes and speakers, their work draws listeners closer, aiming to be the backdrop to one’s deepest desires, stirring an urge to dance. At the core of their sound is a primal need to move, a rhythm that speaks to something fundamental within us all. Their music bears traces of The Cure, Depeche Mode, Creux Lies, Body of Light, and Soft Kill, showcasing a diverse range of influences that shape their unique sound.

In 2023, the NYC born, Berlin-based Curses released Next Wave Acid Punx DEUX: a sprawling 49 track compilation that spanned dance music from 1980s industrial and EBM pioneers (Cabaret Voltaire, Nitzer Ebb) all the way up to the genre’s most interesting dance floor-oriented current artists (Buzz Kull, Ultra Sunn). But there’s more. Next Wave Acid Punx DEUX – Secret Cuts is a collection of 11 bonus tracks that, despite not being released on DEUX last year, rightfully deserve their own time in the spotlight.

“Curating Next Wave Acid Punx DEUX was a big puzzle,” explains Curses. “Figuring out how to fit all these tracks across 6 different 12″s required a lot of calculations and, to be quite frank, I was never that great at maths. Unfortunately, this meant we had to cut some real heaters off of DEUX. But Eskimo and I decided that we couldn’t let these gems go to dust. I’ve been DJing them loads in my sets, so it was only fair to share them with y’all to DJ and rage to yourselves. So, here it is… the final blast of bonus tracks for Next Wave Acid Punx DEUX: Secret Cuts.”

Secret Cuts is jammed with names both familar and new: the revivalist EBM of Chrome Corps, Ghost Cop‘s sultry horror disco, and the spindly industrial beats of Notausgang are all primed for the DJ’s secret weapon folder. Out on February 7th, the entire release will be available via Bandcamp but, for now, three tracks are available.

Eskimo Recordings · Nuovo Testamento – In My Dreams (Powerhouse Mix)
Nuovo Testamento – “In My Dreams (Powerhouse Mix)” is an Italo-house stomper. Complete with lead piano, the remix is pure energy.

Eskimo Recordings · Unconscious feat. Carnuntum – Carnivora (LivEvil Version)
Unconscious feat. Carnuntum – “Carnivora (LivEvil Version)” seethes in the refined EBM the Italian artist, Unconscious, is known for with a rumbling bassline and mysterious vocals by Carnuntum.

CURSES · Curses – The Deep End (Redux)
Curses – “The Deep End (Redux)” is a Carpenter-esque gem that would fit nicely with the theme to Christine. Its disco-inspired beat carries the somber guitar and haunting synth pads as they swell and disseminate.

Pre-order here.

26.01.2024 - So Close to Armageddon — Lebanon Hanover Debut Poignant Video for “KYIV”

And I still can’t figure out why
you were born there and not I
They’re firing rockets on your apartment
and not on the one of mine
Following a successful round of US shows last autumn, after more than ten years away from the American touring scene, Lebanon Hanover recently made a compelling return with a double A-side single, their first new offering since the mesmerizing Sci-Fi Sky of 2020. With Better Than Going Under/KYIV, the enigmatic William Maybelline and Larissa Iceglass skillfully blend the earthy tones of folk-acoustic and the ethereal qualities of classic dream pop with the raw emotional depth of post-punk. This fusion serves as a reflective journey through the fleeting yet intense experiences that shape our existence.

Through the evocative strains of KYIV and its beautiful accompanying video, Lebanon Hanover invites its audience to deeply contemplate life’s inherent splendor, even in the throes of despair. In this piece, the band crafts a sonic tableau that speaks to the collective human spirit, endeavoring to sow seeds of hope and solidarity in times of upheaval. The track, imbued with a poignant emotional depth, delves into the essence of the human experience, touching upon themes of being, understanding, and the interconnected story of our world.

The interplay of acoustic guitar and drum machine evokes a soundscape reminiscent of the Cocteau Twins’  Treasure, offering a listening journey marked by melancholy and haunting beauty. Iceglass’s voice, its deep, morose timbre shifting into a tone of resigned lament, captures the stark realities of grief. This reflection, devoid of a specific storyline, resonates with a universal empathy for those caught in the crossfire, highlighting the stark differences in human experiences shaped by mere geographical chance. The addition of a sombre trumpet further enriches the song, illustrating the depth of despair yet simultaneously acting as a beacon, advocating for unity and shared compassion to navigate the tribulations of existence.

Directed by Nastya Platinova, the video captures the duo as they contemplate these severe realities within an almost surreal environment. It juxtaposes a beautiful, sunlit landscape against the backdrop of a dilapidated cathedral-esque building’s ruins, creating a striking visual metaphor that amplifies the contrast between beauty and decay, hope and despair.

“Better Than Going Under / KYIV” is out via Fabrika Records on a limited edition white and gold 12-inch vinyl, as well as the standard black.

26.01.2024 - Vienna Darkwave Artist LUARR Debuts the Icy Melancholia of his Latest Single “Cold!”

In Vienna, a city resonant with the legacies of Mozart, Beethoven, and Strauss, a novel narrative unfolds with the arrival of LUARR, a Brazilian expatriate. He introduces a fresh dimension to this renowned musical hub, weaving his post-punk, darkwave aesthetic into its storied ambiance.

LUARR’s artistry represents a seamless fusion of historical depth and contemporary edge. In his latest single, Cold!, he masterfully melds the reflective soul of indie rock into a brooding backdrop. His forlorn sound is further enriched by the modern rhythms of hip-hop, which he intricately integrates into his distinct post-punk, darkwave style. This blend introduces a novel layer to his music. LUARR’s vocal expression, deeply infused with themes of isolation and the ache of distance, mirrors the universal struggle against life’s injustices.

The pain of isolation and apathy is touched upon in Cold!, a silent storm brewing within the heart’s depths. When we find ourselves adrift in an expansive sea of separation, the distance between two people can seem insurmountable, turning each moment into an echo of longing. This distance creates an invisible barrier, a void where shared whispers and warmth once resided, now replaced by the cold, digital exchanges that lack the immediacy and intimacy of face-to-face interactions. The isolation intensifies this disconnection. It’s a test of resilience, leaving individuals wrestling with the shadows of doubt and underlying resentment…and the yearning for an intimacy that feels just out of reach.

26.01.2024 - Got a Light? — Portland Synthwave Duo Dead Astronauts Debut Haunting Video for “Erase Me”

With bones that break
With a head full of fear
When paranoia shakes
You get the hell outta here
The Portland-based project Dead Astronauts, renowned figures in the synthwave and synthpop genres, skillfully blend elements of darkwave, goth, and post-punk into their music. The band underwent a significant transformation when one of its founding members, Hayley Stewart, left to pursue a solo project under the name Mecha Maiko, marking a new chapter in the band’s journey. In 2019, Florence Bullock took over the female lead role, filling the void left by Stewart, while Slade Templeton, known for his work with Crying Vessel and Influx Studios, joined the group. This transition not only marked a fresh start for Dead Astronauts but also paved the way for a creative evolution in their sound and artistic direction.

Building on their renewed lineup, Dead Astronauts released “Silhouettes” and its remix version, “Silhouettes Redux,” showcasing their expanded and refined sound. However, 2023 brought unforeseen challenges as Florence Bullock grappled with scheduling conflicts and health issues. This situation necessitated Slade Templeton to take on a more significant role within the band, working closely with Jared Kyle. This shift further propelled the band into a transformative phase, from which a revitalized Dead Astronauts emerged, ready to chart new territories in their musical journey.

Now Dead Astronauts announces a new single – with a night terror of a music video accompanying it – in the guise of the captivating Erase Me.

In Erase Me, director Michael Williamson conjures a landscape reminiscent of Maya Deren’s seminal work, Meshes of the Afternoon, crafting a video that unfurls as a surreal phantasmagoria, steeped in sensations of disorientation, impotence, and disquiet. The video stars Lauren Koopowitz and Adam Ovadia, who bring the narrative to life with their emotive performances. Its recursive, non-linear storytelling is laden with symbolism, probing the depths of identity, the continuum of time, and the labyrinthine recesses of the subconscious, ensnaring the viewer in a web of introspection and the eerie. At its heart, Williamson’s piece reveals a narrative imbued with the poignancy of trauma alluded to in the line “leaving bodies behind.” And ultimately, the track navigates the delicate interplay between confronting one’s inner spectres and the arduous task of distinguishing these from the very entities that might herald salvation.

Watch the strikingly cinematic video for Erase Me below:

“Erase Me” is a haunting journey that draws listeners into its unsettling and mysterious narrative. It creates a powerful blend of music and visuals, highlighting the synergy between auditory and visual arts. With it, Dead Astronauts go beyond presenting a mesmerizing single; they craft a multi-sensory experience that previews the expansive musical voyage set to unfold in their forthcoming Ghosts album.

25.01.2024 - Live Review: XX Planet Myer Day - Leipzig 2024

Moritzbastei, Leipzig, Germany 20th January 2024XX Planet Myer Day 2024 with Dina Summer, Architect feat. Emese Árvai-Illés (Black Nail Cabaret), Monya, Tilly Electronics, Asia Imbiss, zalvox The Planet Myer Day festival marked its 20th anniversary this year, and it certainly did so in style. The organizers curated an engaging line-up and cultivated a genuinely festive atmosphere. This was my inaugural experience at both the festival and Moritzbastei, and I must confess my delight - both with the venue, the amiable staff, and the diverse audience in attendance. The club space offered a setting for more intimate conversations, moments of relaxation, and the vibrating energy of both club and concert experiences. Considering all these elements, it’s not surprising that the festival maintains unwavering popularity among enthusiasts of dark sounds.
