Manchmal ist es schwer, im Augenblick dessen eigentlich bahnbrechende Bedeutung wahrzunehmen. Als ARCHITECTS am 11. März 2014 ihr sechstes Studioalbum veröffentlichten, ahnte noch niemand, was die Briten in der folgenden Dekade damit losbrechen würden. Nach dem Stilbruch von „The Here And Now“ (2011) und der Rehabilitation „Daybreaker“ (2012) definierte das Quartett mit „Lost Forever // Lost Together“ nicht einfach nur ihren Sound neu, sondern prägte von da an maßgeblich die Marschrichtung des Metalcore.

Die Melodic-Death- und Thrash-Schule um AS I LAY DYING, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE und DARKEST HOUR hatte auf einmal ausgedient. Es wurde technischer, härter, progressiver und dabei doch aufrichtig wie emotional. Textlich erkundet Gitarrist und Mastermind Tom Searle († 2016) vorwiegend gesellschaftskritische Themen, richtet den Blick auf religiösen Fundamentalismus, den Umweltschutz und Korruption, aber auch seine Krebserkrankung, welcher er nur wenige Jahre später erliegen würde. Dass Searle so nah am Puls der Zeit schreiben und dabei persönliche Themen doch in universellen Kontext rücken konnte, ist nur einer der Gründe, warum „Lost Forever // Lost Together“ selbst eine Dekade später nichts von seiner Dringlichkeit eingebüßt hat.

ARCHITECTS zeigen Haltung und klare Kante – textlich wie musikalisch
Zeitlos sind auch die Arrangements, die bisweilen an Intensität kaum zu überbieten sind und inmitten vielschichtiger Ebenen oftmals einen zerbrechlichen Kern offenbaren. Träumerische Melodien und eine an Post Rock angelehnte Leadgitarre im Abschluss „The Distant Blue“ verleihen Song und Album Gravitas, während die intelligent eingewobenen Synthesizer ausgewählten Stücken eine dezent ätherische Qualität verleihen. Es ist die menschliche Seite, die hier aus ARCHITECTS spricht: hin- und hergerissen angesichts der besungenen Themen, die zuweilen viel zu groß wirken für vier vergleichsweise unbedeutende Individuen aus Brighton.

Und doch schwingt immer Entschlossenheit und ein wenig verbitterte Wut mit, wenn ARCHITECTS in „Naysayer“ ihre eigene Position klar formulieren und in „Gravedigger“ ihrer Enttäuschung über politische Wendehälse Luft machen. Mit Haltung und klarer Kante – auch musikalisch: Denn die Art und Weise, wie die Band trotz zahlreicher Haken und Tempowechsel immer den Flow aufrechterhält, ist beeindruckend. Knackige Breakdowns reichert Kreativchef Tom Searle durch kreative und niemals eindimensionale Einschübe, Layers oder Licks an, was dem rohen Grundcharakter der Platte zusätzlich eine organische Qualität spendiert.

Mit “Lost Forever // Lost Together” lieferten ARCHITECTS eine Blaupause des modernen Metalcore
Anteil daran hat selbstredend auch Frontmann Sam Carter, der zwischen Gift und Galle die eigene Gefühlslage nicht vergisst. Ob hochaggressive Shouts, dezent platzierter Klargesang oder die zum Markenzeichen gewordene Fry-Technik – wir nehmen dem Sänger jedes einzelne Wort ab. Die punktuelle Streicheruntermalung wie in „The Devil Is Near“ oder „Colony Collapse“ wäre daher nicht einmal nötig.

Läuft das Album ob seines unnachgiebigen Grundcharakters doch mal Gefahr, in Gleichförmigkeit zu enden, brechen ARCHITECTS die Homogenität durch ein konsterniertes Instrumentalstück wie „Red Hypergiant“ auf, nachdem „Dead Men Talking“ mit Groove und Djent-Einschlag genau jene Qualitäten vorgelebt hatte, die nachfolgende Generationen nun fest in ihre DNA aufgesogen haben. Nur die Finesse, die Stücke wie „Broken Cross“ oder „C.A.N.C.E.R“ so unverwechselbar machen, lässt sich nicht so einfach reproduzieren.

“Lost Forever // Lost Together” ist ein wegweisendes Genre-Werk
Eine Erfahrung, die leider auch ARCHITECTS selbst machen mussten: Nach Searles beeindruckendem Abschiedswerk „All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us“ (2016) und der teils aus dessen Nachlass entstandenen Trauerbewältigung „Holy Hell“ (2018) schlossen die Könige des modernen Metalcore ihrerseits dieses Kapitel ab, um künftig einen simpleren, leicht bekömmlichen Ansatz zu verfolgen. Was allerdings bleibt, ist ein wegweisendes, bisweilen monumentales Werk, dessen Einfluss bis zum heutigen Tag und wohl darüber hinaus nicht genug gewürdigt werden kann. Dass all das an jenem 11. März 2014 noch niemand richtig realisieren konnte, soll letztlich keinem zum Verhängnis werden – hinterher ist man bekanntlich immer schlauer.

In the cavernous wind-whipped streets of Chicago, where shadows cling to the bricks like old secrets, Karen Righeimer-Schock and Ivan Russia, the city’s own wrecking crew known as BELLHEAD, have thrown their latest punch. It’s a new video for Bad Taste, a track culled from their Good Intentions EP / mini album.

The song itself is a narrative woven from the threads of heartache and disillusionment, depicting a romance that has meandered through the dimly lit corridors of doubt and betrayal. “Bad Taste” explores the quest for solidity in a reality as ephemeral as a castle of cards caught in a gust.

For this cinematic venture, Bellhead and filmmaker John A. Weaver retreated to the seclusion of rural Wisconsin, a locale so shrouded in silence that even whispers become monumental. Armed with an arsenal of visual tools that bridge the chasm between the gritty allure of Super 8mm film and the sterile clarity of 4k digital, they crafted a vision that is both an homage to and a departure from the past.

“This video places the viewer in a fever dream where BELLHEAD is hopelessly trying to escape a chaotic antagonist,” Weaver says. “Reality and hallucinations blur together and trade places as they descend into darkness. In this presentation, there is no ‘motivation’ behind why they are running. Rather, the audience is dropped into something ongoing and have only the visual clues I provide to make sense of what is going on. Just when the audience thinks they’re on to a story, I throw something in to shake them off. The goal is to create an experience that is unsettling yet captivating.”

Mit “Versets Noirs” wird in einigen Wochen das neue Album der Blackened Death Metal-Band ACOD erscheinen. Es ist das sechste Album der Franzosen aus Marseille, deren Band inzwischen zu einem Duo geschrumpft ist: Sänger Frédéric Peuchaud sowie Gitarrist und Bassist Jérôme Grollier (MORTIFERA, CELESTIA, BEYOND THE PERMAFROST).

“Versets Noirs” wurde von Sebastien Camhi im Studio Artmusic aufgenommen und gemixt und von Jacob Hansen gemastert. Erscheinen wird das Album am 26. April 2024 via Hammerheart Records. Vorab gibt es zu “The Son of a God: The Heir of Divine Blood” einen Video-Clip.

ANGRA veröffentlichten ihr zehntes Album: “Cycles Of Pain” erschien am 3. November 2023 via Atomic Fire Records/Reigning Phoenix Music auf CD, LP sowie digital. Darauf enthalten sind insgesamt zwölf Tracks, darunter auch die neue Auskopplung “Here In The Now“, bei der Vanessa Morneo als Gast zu hören ist.

Zuvor teilte die Band zu “Vida Seca” ein Video bei YouTube. Außerdem gibt es mit “Gods Of The World” einen weiteren Video-Clip. Ebenfalls verfügbar: die Single “Tide Of Changes“.

“Wir leben in einem Moment großer Instabilität, und während unser Ego die Komfortzone und die Kontrolle sucht, ist es von grundlegender Bedeutung, sich an diese Unbeständigkeit anzupassen, auf den Wellen des Schicksals zu surfen und nicht auf unseren Erwartungen”, sagt Gitarrist Rafael Bittencourt.

“Dieses Werk ist aus vielerlei Gründen eine besondere Angelegenheit für uns: Zuallererst ist seit unserer letzten Veröffentlichung in 2018 natürlich viel geschehen. Persönlich, aber auch kollektiv mussten wir in den vergangenen fünf Jahren schwere Zeiten durchmachen, während wir eine Achterbahnfahrt der Gefühle durchlebten, die Herausforderungen, Frust, Ruhm und Erfolg mit sich brachte, woraus wir letztendlich enorm viel Inspiration für potenzielle Textthemen beziehen konnten. 2019 starb erst mein Vater, ehe wenige Monate später auch Andre Matos von uns ging. Zwei Ereignisse, die mein Leben immens beeinflusst haben, aber auch die Sorgen der anderen Bandmitglieder sollen nicht außer Acht gelassen werden.

»Cycles Of Pain« ist äußerst kompakt und steckt voller Erlebnisse und geballtem Schmerz. Auch wenn wir uns aktuell in einer tollen Lage befinden, behandelt das Album doch unterschiedliche Arten von Schmerz und beleuchtet diese aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln: Was uns wie wehtut, die Läuterung, das Trauma, die Narben. Einerseits wollen wir von Geburt an jegliches Leid vermeiden, andererseits werden wir aber auch tagtäglich mit ihm konfrontiert. Es gibt kein Entkommen, es ist ein endloser Kreislauf. Wir wollen den Schmerz von uns fernhalten, doch ist es schließlich er, der uns im Alltag formt und reifen lässt. Inmitten dieser tiefgründigen Thematik wollen aber aber auch allen Menschen, die mit Problemen zu kämpfen haben, Hoffnung und Trost spenden. Ich bin mir sicher, dass diese Scheibe Licht in die dunklen Leben vieler Leute bringen wird, während es zeitgleich neue Maßstäbe für unseren eigenen Stil setzt.“

Zur Besetzung der brasilianischen Progressive-Power-Metal-Band gehört aktuell auch Sänger Fabio Lione (u.a. ATHENA XIX, ex-RHAPSODY OF FIRE, ex-VISION DIVINE). Darüber hinaus enthält die Platte Gastbeiträge von Amanda Somerville, Lenine, Vanessa Moreno sowie Juliana D’Agostini. Produziert hat “Cycles Of Pain” Dennis Ward, Mix und Mastering ließ man im deutschen The TrakShak erledigen.

For many, addiction prowls like a silent predator, its presence both elusive and overpowering. It’s a tale as old as time, whispered in the hush of a smoky bar or echoed in the silent despair of a lonely apartment. The man or woman with a haunted look in their eyes, a glass clutched too tightly in a trembling hand—they’re not just fighting the urge for another drink, another hit. No, it’s something far more sinister. They’re being chased by demons, ethereal and relentless, born from the very depths of their own psyche.

Addiction whispers in your ear in the dead of night, promising solace, but delivering only despair. It’s a spectral charade, with each fix a fleeting escape; but here’s the kicker: the more you run, the closer they get. You see, these demons, they’re crafty. They’re after your soul. But here’s the thing about being chased by demons—you can never truly outrun them. Not unless you face them head-on, stare into their ghastly eyes, and confront the very essence of your fear.

From Orange County, California, the vocal artist known as Chv.Volk offers a journey through the darker territories of industrial and noise-pop music. With a focus on personal trauma, his work serves as a deep dive into self-reflection, articulated through industrial rhythms and the distinctive textures of noise-pop. Chv.Volk’s approach combines poetry with genre-defying soundscapes, inviting listeners to explore a realm of introspection and emotional complexity. Now, he confronts those demons with the compelling single and video, Mercy For The Frozen.

“Mercy for the Frozen is a song about addiction,” says the artist. “The video and song have references to ice and snow which are just street words for certain drugs. This song is a plea to my friends and family to get help. After the loss I’ve experienced because of addiction, this is a cry for help. To me, drugs are the devil. Which is why in the video, I’m being stalked, followed and chased by a demon. The drug. In the end, drugs do what they do, and that’s destroy.”

Directed by Christopher Lorenzi of Ghost Train Inc., the filmic clip begins with a striking image of blood scattered across pristine snow, swiftly transitioning to unsettling scenes of spectral figures lurking in a tunnel, preying upon a tormented spirit. Captured in the raw, unfiltered essence of cinema vérité reminiscent of “found footage” masterpieces such as The Blair Witch Project, the footage unfolds as if it were a harrowing omen from the other side. It is eerie, unsettling, and relentless, just like the spectre of addiction itself.

In the end, addiction and demons, they’re two sides of the same tarnished coin. Both are relentless, unforgiving, and intimately familiar with the darkest recesses of the human heart. So, if you ever find yourself walking these shadowed streets, remember that sometimes, the bravest thing you can do is stop running and face what’s been haunting you.

Die Death / Thrash Metal-Band GHOUL hat mit “Ratlicker” ein Lyric-Video ihrer neuen EP “Noxious Concoctions” veröffentlicht. Die Scheibe folgt auf das bislang letzte (und fünfte) Album “Dungeon Bastards” (2016) nach.

“Noxious Concoctions” wurde gemeinsam mit Scott Evans bei Antisleep Audio und in den Sharkbite Studios aufgenommen und von Dan Randall gemastert. Erschienen ist die EP am 2. Februar 2024 via Tankcrimes.

Interview withYvette Winkler (vocals) and Frank Weyzig (guitar, bass guitar, synths and programming) from Vaselyne VASELYNE is one of the most interesting and ethereal bands to emerge on the Darkwave scene in recent years. The Dutch band is the dream child of Yvette Winkler and Frank Weyzig - who between them have an impressive musical resume. They have both worked with many other musical projects - Frank is probably best known for his work with CLAN OF XYMOX which led to sessions on the famous John Peel Radio Show. He is also involved with many other musical projects: WHITE ROSE TRANSMISSION, STARGAZING PROJECT and BORN FOR BLISS.

Die Sludge-Band BLACK TUSK hat ihr siebtes Studioalbum “The Way Forward” angekündigt. Es ist die erste Veröffentlichung mit dem neuen Bassisten Derek Lynch, der wie Gitarrist und Sänger Chris “Scary” Adams als vollwertiges Mitglied aufgenommen wurde. Letzterer zeichnet zudem für Produktion und Mix der Platte verantwortlich. Davon überzeugen kann man sich nun mittels der Single “Dance On Your Grave” bei YouTube.

The slow rhythms together with the different singers make it more accessible while a few passages are more into Electro-Pop and danceable passages. The main characteristic of the work is the narrating format of the singers interpreting extracts of sci-fi stories.

+ + + : Jean-Marc Lederman moves on exorcizing his endless creative thoughts and concepts with one of his most creative and ambitious works ever. It’s not only about music -which totally stands for the concept of the album revealing a ‘space’-like dimension but also the accomplishment of a wider- and higher artistic goal. There’s a kind of cyber-puzzle wherein the listener/visitor has to unlock every single track.You really have to experience it on your own to realize what it’s all about.

Die Psychedelic / Dark Folk / Progressive Rock-Band VITSKÄR SÜDEN hat mit “Vessel” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist das dritte Album der US-Amerikaner aus Los Angeles und wurde abermals von Don Cento gemixt.

Das neue Album betrachtet die Zerbrechlichkeit des menschlichen Lebens in Form einer Art Schauerromansammlung. Von postapokalyptischen, regengetränkten Wäldern und versunkenen Lovecraftschen Städten bis hin zu stürmischen Meeren und sumpfigen Schlachtfeldern führt die Platte den Hörer durch Portale zu sieben unverwechselbaren Klangwelten.

“Klanglich wollten wir das, was wir mit “The Faceless King” begonnen haben, weiterführen und andere Instrumente, mehr Synthesizer, Klavier und Streicher verwenden”, sagt Gitarrist Julian Goldberger. “Ich glaube, wir wollten uns alle ein wenig ausdehnen und uns an die Atmosphäre und die Stimmung anlehnen, die aus diesen düsteren Geschichten entstanden ist.”

“Vessel” wird am 17. Mai 2024 via Ripple Music erscheinen. Vorab gibt es den Opener “Vengeance Speaks” zu hören – mit Cellist Max Mueller, Geigerin Emily Moore und Sängerin Kristi Merideth als Gästen.

Die Gruppe erklärt den Hintergrund der Platte:

“Mit ‘Upharsin’ wollten wir die Wunden der Menschheit als Kollektiv öffnen. Das Album reflektiert darüber, wie Menschen dazu neigen, sich zu Konflikten und Streitigkeiten hinreißen zu lassen. Wie Religionen und Politik sowie andere Aspekte unseres täglichen Lebens von unseren niederen Instinkten verdorben und getrieben werden, da wir uns willentlich weigern, aus unserer eigenen Geschichte zu lernen, da wir uns dafür entscheiden, den Schattenaspekt unserer psychischen Realität zu ignorieren und zu vernachlässigen, was uns wiederum immer weiter in den ewigen Kreislauf der Gewalt führt. Mit “Turbulent” wird am 19. April 2024 ihr neue Album der Hard Rock / Grunge-Band NEVER ELECTED erscheinen. Es ist das erste Album der US-Amerikaner aus Washington DC. Zuvor hat die Band mit “Down Too Long” (2017) eine EP veröffentlicht.

“Turbulent” wurde gemeinsam mit Farhad “Zink” Hossain im Zinkferd Studio aufgenommen, von Matty Pellets gemixt und von Jason Stanley gemastert. Das Cover-Artwork stammt von Sänger und Bandmitbegründer Sujit Kumar (AARON HOLT): Das Cover besteht aus drei Ebenen, auf denen ein Kind, ein wütend schreiender Mann und etwas zu sehen ist, das wie ein von einer künstlichen Intelligenz generiertes Ich aussieht, das die beiden nur anschaut, ohne jegliche Gefühle oder Emotionen.

Da hat der Schweizer Klang Visionär und Elektro Pionier sowie Mitglied der legendären Kultformation YELLO, BORIS BLANK wieder mal eine geniale Platte veröffentlicht, schon seine 3. Soloscheibe übrigens und diesmal sind es schwerelose Klangwelten zwischen Raum und Zeit geworden. Mit YELLO und ihren großartigen Elektrohits wie z.B. „Lost again“, „Oh Yeah“, „Vicious Games“, „The Rhythm Divine“, „Bostich“, „Stella“, „Desire“, „The Race“ ( Formel Eins Titelsong) feierten BLANK sowie DIETER MEIER und anfangs auch CARLOS PERON große, weltweite Erfolge, Live sind sie aber erst 2016 erstmalig aufgetreten. YELLO wurden 1978 gegründet und sie kamen sogar früh mit Deutschland in Kontakt, da Synth Dino KLAUS SCHULZE sie damals eingeladen hatte um über einen Vertrag zu sprechen, er ahnte wohl schon was für ein erfolgreiches Potenzial in den Schweizern steckte. Die 12 neuen Tracks nun entstanden aus einer Auftragsarbeit für das Züricher Thermalbad Fortyseven, weil die Gäste dort anfragten, ob man die Songs die dort liefen, auch kaufen könne und schon brachte BORIS BLANK in seinem Zürichbergstudio die Titel in eine passende Album Version. Von daher kann man sich vorstellen, das die Sound Ausrichtung eher meditativ und getragen klingt und vor allem in sphärischen Ambient Welten Zuhause ist, aber teils auch hier und da in typisch rhythmischen YELLO Klängen schwelgt. Der Mix aus synthetischen Flächen und organischen Field Recordings und pulsierenden Beats präsentiert dem geneigten Hörer einen wahren „Ohrgasmus“ und ein opulentes Klang und Hör Erlebnis der Extraklasse, also einfach Kopfkino pur inkl. der Auslotung in die Weiten des Weltalls. Oder für nächtliche Ausfahrten durch nebelverhangene Landschaften und danach direkt an der früh morgendlichen Küstenstraße entlang, auch dafür wären diese galaktischen Klänge bestens geeignet. Ausserdem haben STEFAN BOCK und STEFAN ZARADIC von IAN Records/MSM Studios München mithilfe des vom Fraunhofer Institut entwickelten „Spatial Sound Wave Systems“ eine passend zum Thema aufwändig, inszinierte 3 D Sound Landschaft kreiert. Von daher ist das Ganze wahrlich eine Pracht für alle Soundfetischisten, da alle Songs und Videos der Pure Audio Blue Ray in den Formaten Hi Res Stereo, Dolby Atmos und Auro 3D produziert wurden. Das wertvolle/hochwertige Deluxe Digipack enthält nämlich neben der Pure Audio Blu Ray mit 5 Bonus Videos die 12 Track CD und dazu noch ein 24 seitiges Booklet !

Since their formation in Copenhagen back in 2009, The Foreign Resort has dedicated themselves for over a decade to refining a sound that explodes with the raw energy of post-punk and delves into sombre shades of melancholy. Their work stands out for its richness and excitement, embodying moods both light and dark, and imbued with emotional depth with an immediate impact.

Now, The Foreign Resort has dropped a brand new single Resound via Toronto’s Artoffact Records. This standalone track is a confluence of moods as mysterious as a fog-veiled street at the witching hour, yet it carries an infectious joy that’s hard to shake. The lyrics, bewitching and spirited, blend seamlessly with a mix of pop and post-punk that’s been sharpened to perfection, both in the instrumental execution and the vocal delivery. If you think you can stand still while it plays, you might want to check your pulse.

In a town where the neon bleeds into the night like a siren’s call, Resound tells the tale of foreign love and a beautiful home found in another’s arms. Lost in the shadows, where demons lurk and decay whispers, a beacon shines through, chasing away the dark. But the flames of passion burn too fiercely, revealing a disaster in their wake, a run from the inevitable, a heart set to explode with no chance for escape. Yet, in the tumble of thoughts and self-doubt, a melody emerges, strong and defiant, transforming scars into a song of beauty. It’s a dance with danger, a gamble on love; a shot at redemption with every beat of the heart, making each moment the one to remember.

“Resound is the sound of The Foreign Resort in party mode,” quips the band. “We wanted to try a different mood, while still keeping the energy and this is what came out of it: Less contemplating, more dancing! The Foreign Resort skillfully combines the mysterious allure of The Cure’s Pornography era with a dynamic production reminiscent of LCD Soundsystem, offering a unique musical expression. Intricate guitar lines wrapped in reverb play over the solid foundation laid by Steffan Petersen’s bass and Morten Hansen’s powerful drumming. At the center of it all, Mikkel Borbjerg Jakobsen’s vocals are tight and earnest, demanding the listener’s focus with every note.

The Foreign Resort has toured relentlessly, addicted to the allure of America’s lost highways, sharing bills with bands like Cold Cave, DIIV, The Soft Moon, She Past Away, The KVB, Slowdive, Minor Victories, Ash Code, and many more. Since 2010, the band has been rigorous in playing more than 420 shows across North America and Europe with performances at several festivals, including SXSW, Iceland Airwaves, Wave Gotik Treffen, Canadian Music Week, POP Montreal, and Nocturnal Culture Night. GHØSTKID haben einen neuen Song mit dem Titel “Murder” auf allen gängigen Streaming-Portalen veröffentlicht. Der Track folgt auf die Preview-Nummer “FSU”, welche bei YouTube verfügbar ist. Entnommen sind beide Stücke dem kommenden Album “Hollywood Suicide”, das am 22. März 2024 via Century Media auf CD, Vinyl sowie digital erscheinen wird.

Zuletzt hatte die Gruppe einen Clip zu ihrer Single “Heavy Rain” hochgeladen. Das Video verbindet die Band mit einer Trigger-Warnung: Es seien Szenen häuslicher Gewalt zu sehen.

Zuvor veröffentlichte die Formation ein Musikvideo zu ihrem Song “Hollywood Suicide”. Die Aufnahmen stammen von der vergangenen Tour mit BAD OMENS im Februar 2023. Die Single selbst war bereits Anfang des Jahres veröffentlicht worden.

Für Produktion und Mix der Stücke zeichnet Sky van Hoff verantwortlich. Das Mastering übernahm Jens Dreesen.

Die Stoner / Punk Rock-Band DEVIL MOON RISEN hat mit “Fissures of Men” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist das erste Album des US-amerikanischen Trios aus Phoenix und wird am 6. Juni 2024 erscheinen. Das Album wurde von Jalipaz Nelson gemixt und gemastert und mit einem Cover-Artwork von Hilary Martin Art ausgestattet.

Wie sich am Ende des Tages herausstellen sollte, wurde das der Tag der beschissenen Autofahrten. Baustellen auf der Autobahn und in Hamburg (Leute, was habt ihr da vor?) haben mir das Leben und Fahren schwer gemacht. Dann waren auch noch alle Parkhäuser voll und alle Parkplätze in der Gegend der großen Freiheit besetzt. Ich habe, nach über 20 Minuten Suche, dann auf der Reeperbahn direkt vor dem Pink Palace was bekommen.
Dadurch, dass das Konzert eine Stunde vorverlegt wurde und die Fahrt so kacke war, bin ich dann leider auch erst in der großen Freiheit angekommen, als die erste Band schon am Ende ihres Sets war.

MANTAR
Beim vorletzten Song hab ich den Laden betreten und habe direkt versucht trotzdem noch in den Fotograben zu kommen. Da die ausverkaufte Bude aber natürlich rappelvoll war, hat es leider nur für ein paar Fotos von ganz vorne seitlich neben der Bühne gereicht, schade! Ich finde MANTAR interessant und die beiden Lümmel mehr als sympathisch, aber musikalisch ist das nicht so meine Baustelle. Das Publikum in der rappelvollen großen Freiheit schien jedoch gefallen zu finden und nickte kräftig mit den Köpfen und applaudierte kräftig nach dem letzten Song!

THE HALO EFFECT
Die Melodic Death Metal Band, bei der alle Mitglieder schon für In Flames auf der Bühne gestanden haben. Nach einem Intro starteten die Schweden direkt mit dem Titelsong ihres Albums „Days Of The Lost“ von 2022. Das Ganze war ziemlich cool und im Publikum fanden sich auch Fans mit Merch der Band. Der Sound war wirklich gut, was bei so viel Erfahrung der ganzen Musiker aber auch nicht sonderlich verwunderlich ist. Und man konnte den Jungs die Bühnenerfahrung auch anmerken. Entweder hatten sie alle wirklich Bock oder sie wussten eben, wie man es rüberbringt. Beim dritten Song gab es solche Probleme mit dem Sampler, der von Livedrummer Anton Roos bedient wird, dass nach mehreren Versuchen wieder in den Song zu kommen doch abgebrochen wurde.  Die Band hat es aber profilike mit Fassung genommen und Sänger Mikael Stanne sagte mit einem Lächeln, dass sowas halt auch mal passiert. Daraufhin machten sie direkt mit dem 4. Song weiter. Das Publikum hat die Band gut angenommen. Mir selbst war das Ganze zu glatt gebügelt, hatte zu wenig Ecken und Kanten. Aber man merkt, dass die Jungs ihren Job schon lange und auch gut machen. Es hat Spaß gemacht ihnen zuzusehen, gepackt hat es mich aber nicht.

MESHUGGAH
Dann war es soweit, der Headliner des Abends stand an.
MESHUGGAH habe ich schon 2 Mal gesehen. Allerdings vor 25 und 20 Jahren. Danach sind wir nicht mehr zusammengekommen. Deswegen wurde es nach der wirklich starken Platte „Immutable“ von 2022 definitiv wieder Zeit für ein Date.
Ein ziemlich krankes Lied lief dann vorweg. Ein Oldie der total dilettantisch gespielt und schlecht gesungen aufgenommen wurde. Ob Ernst oder schon als Scherz produziert, war nicht auszumachen. Dann kam mit „Careless Whisper“ von George Michael das eigentliche Intro, was vom Publikum mit breitem Grinsen gefeiert wurde.
Dann ging das Licht aus und ein längeres ambientes Gewummer dröhnte durch die Große Freiheit 36, während sich die Band hinter der Bühne klar gemacht hat.
Beim Opener „Broken Cog“ standen alle vor den lichtdurchfluteten Stagedrops und haben sich so gut wie nicht bewegt. Sehr cooler Einstieg.
Mit einem meiner Favoriten ging es dann in die Vollen.
Während ich im Fotograben beschäftigt war, merkte ich ab dem ersten Ton „Rational Gaze“, dass der Boden anfing zu schwingen. Ich drehte mich um und das Publikum hat direkt beim ersten Ton einen Megapit ausgelöst, Gänsehaut. Als der Song vorbei war gab es Meshuggah, Meshuggah Rufe!
Ansagen waren heute Abend keine große Sache und so kam die erste nach Song 3 und auch die war recht kurz gefasst.
Nach der Hälfte des Sets ging das Licht aus, als alle Musiker die Bühne verlassen hatten und „Mind´s Mirrors“ lief vom Band.
Dann leitet „In Death – Is Life“ die zweite Hälfte des Sets ein und es geht nahtlos über in „In Death – Is Death“. Ab da wurde es wirklich gemein und fies und düster. Was ab da durch die Boxen ballerte, war von der Band sicherlich bewusst so gesetzt worden. Ab da ist auch das Publikum wilder gewesen als vorher eh schon. Und spätestens jetzt war wirklich alles krank. Die Musik der Band, die Lichtshow, das Publikum. Alles passte sehr gut zusammen.
Zum Abschluss kam dann mein ewiger Liebling „Future Breed Machine“ und das Publikum legt nochmal eine Schippe drauf. Die Backgroundshouts von Fredrik Thordendahl und Mårten Hagström waren auch ziemlich geil, schade, dass das in den aktuellen Alben nicht mehr vorkommt.

Evtl. gab es den ganzen Abend Zeitprobleme, denn das Konzert wurde ja vorverlegt und Halo Effect haben ihren Song ja auch nicht nochmal begonnen. Na ja, keine Ahnung was mit dem Sampler war. Aber nach einem kurzen „Danke“ ging es bei MESHUGGAH direkt rüber in die Zugabe, ohne das die Band die Bühne verlassen hat. Dann war es eigentlich keine Zugabe, oder? Sie starteten direkt mit ihrer Hitsingle „Bleed“, was das Publikum mächtig feierte und schoben noch „Demiurge“ von  „Koloss“ nach.

Eine grandiose Band hat mir durch das ganze Konzert ein Grinsen ins Gesicht getackert.
Großartiges Konzert. Jungs, wir müssen uns wiedersehen und dieses Mal dürfen auf gar keinen Fall 20 Jahre dazwischen liegen.

Was mir noch aufgefallen ist, waren 2 Mikros, die auf der Bühne standen und auch erst zum Auftritt von MESHUGGAH aufgebaut wurden. Evtl. wurde der Gig mitgeschnitten und die Mikrofone waren für die Zuschauer gedacht. Evtl. steht da ja wieder eine Liveaufnahme ins Haus.

Die Death / Thrash Metal-Band DECEASED hat mit “Children of the Morgue” ein neues Album angekündigt. Das neue Album der US-Amerikaner aus Arlington folgt dem 2021er-Cover-Album “Thrash Times at Ridgemont High” nach und soll im August 2024 via Hells Headbangers Records erscheinen. Produziert wird das Album, dessen Aufnahmen im Frühjahr 2024 geplant sind, von Sänger King Fowley.

Die Rock-Band HERBST hat einen Plattenvertrag mit Drakkar Entertainment abgeschlossen. Das gab die Formation in einem Statement bekannt:

“Wir sind überglücklich und stolz verkünden zu können, dass wir einen Deal beim legendären Plattenlabel ,,Drakkar Entertainment‘‘ unterschrieben haben! Es ist ein absoluter Traum, mit einer so angesehenen Institution zusammenarbeiten zu dürfen, die bereits zahlreiche Größen des Rock und Metal unter Vertrag hat und wir können es kaum erwarten, schon bald unsere Musik einem noch größeren Publikum zu präsentieren.”

Gleichzeitig präsentiert die Formation ihre neue Single “Nie wieder” mit einem Musikvideo bei YouTube. Es ist der erste Vorgeschmack auf das noch unbetitelte Zweitwerk und nimmt sich ein ernstes Thema zur Brust:

“‘Nie wieder’ war der erste Song der Recording-Session für unser zweites Album und beinhaltet gleich mal ein hartes Thema: Eltern verlassen ihre Kinder. Dass die sich dann verschließen und gefühlskalt werden können, ist hier unser Thema. Bezeichnend der Satz: ‘Was ich in mir trage, bleibt für immer begraben.‘’ Der düstere Sound fängt diese Stimmung passend perfekt ein.”

NECROPHOBIC haben ihr zehntes Studioalbum veröffentlicht: “In the Twilight Grey” ist seit 15. März 2024 via Century Media Records erhältlich. Zum Release teilte die Gruppe das Stück “Mirrors Of A Thousand Lakes” bei YouTube.

Den Track “Grace Of The Past” gibt es ebenfalls als Audiostream u.a. bei YouTube. Darüber hinaus steht auch ein Lyrics-Video zu “As Stars Collide” bei YouTube bereit. Für NECROPHOBIC-Gitarrist Sebastian Ramstedt hat der Song eine besondere Bedeutung:

“Für mich ist es der  wichtigste Song des Albums. Er beginnt mit einer Melodie, die mir meine Mutter als Kind in den frühen 70ern vorgesungen hat. Es erinnert an ein trauriges Wiegenlied. Ich wollte ihre Melodie ehren, sie aber gleichzeitig in meinen eigenen Kontext stellen. Ich griff auf eine der ältesten Geschichten zurück, die je erzählt wurden, und ließ mich vom Gedicht ‘Innana’s Descent’ inspirieren: Der Morgen- und der Abendstern treffen sich in der Unterwelt, um zu entscheiden, ob das Gute oder das Böse herrschen soll. Ich wollte etwas schaffen, das über den Metal hinausgeht.

Schon im Dezember stellten die Schweden eine erste Single vor und haben ein Video zu “Stormcrow” bei YouTube geteilt.

Den ersten Song der neuen Platte beschreiben NECROPHOBIC so:

“Stormcrow’ war einer der ersten Songs, die für das neue Album geschrieben wurden. Die Idee war, die sehr klassischen NECROPHOBIC-Elemente zu nehmen und sie mit einer langsamen Bridge mit einem starken Heavy-Metal-Feeling zu verbinden. Das lyrische Thema handelt von einer verwundeten Bestie, die sich aus der Tiefe erhebt und ihr Vertrauen in einen geflügelten so genannten ‘Wahrheitssprecher’ setzt. Vielleicht sollten wir vorsichtig sein, wenn wir zulassen, dass die Sturmkrähen unsere Worte in die Welt tragen…”

“In the Twilight Grey” wurde wieder von Fredrik Folkare im Chrome Studio in Stockholm produziert, gemischt und gemastert und von Folkare und der Band selbst aufgenommen. Für das Artwork haben NECROPHOBIC Jens Rydén engagiert.

Das Metal Punk Trio BAT veröffentlicht das nächste Album “Under The Crooked Claw” am 17. Mai 2024 via Nuclear Blast Records; enthalten sind auf der Platte insgesamt 13. Tracks. Einen davon kann man sich vorab als Videoclip: “Rite For Exorcism” bei YouTube.

Sänger Ryan Waste kommentiert die Platte:

„Dieses Album entstand in dunklen Zeiten und seine Aggression spiegelt das sicherlich wider. Nick, Chris und ich hämmerten Lied um Lied in einem schmuddeligen, schimmelbefallenen Lagerhaus, um unseren Ärger über den Zustand der Welt in das zu verwandeln, was zu ‘Under the Crooked Claw’ wurde. Um den Ton für das Album zu setzen, rief ich den legendären italienischen Horror-Maestro Fabio Frizzi dazu auf, ein Intro zu komponieren, kurz bevor BATs rohe Kraft deine Ohren angreift. Während ich gleichzeitig an einem Heavy-Metal-Horror-Drehbuch mit Norman Cabrera arbeitete, teilte ich ihm einige der neuen BAT-Songs mit. Mit unserem gemeinsamen Geschmack in Film und Vision haben wir zwei Videokonzepte für das kommende Album basierend auf meinen Texten entwickelt. BAT ist die Speed Metal-Spielwiese von Bassist und Sänger Ryan Waste (MUNICIPAL WASTE, VOLTURE), Gitarrist Nick Poulos (MUNICIPAL WASTE, Ex-CANNABIS CORPSE) sowie Drummer Chris Marshall.

Gemischt wurde “Under The Crooked Claw” von Arthur Rizk, das Mastering übernahm Joel Grind.

Los Angeles darkwave outfit Cold Cave, helmed by frontman Wes Eisold and multi-instrumentalist Amy Lee, has resurfaced with a captivating new anthem, “She Reigns Down.” This electrifying track marks the band’s first foray into recording and releasing new music in almost three years, seamlessly weaving itself into the band’s illustrious canon of dark poetry and pulsating rhythms.

As the initial drumbeats of “She Reigns Down” pierce the silence, they carry with them the icy, organ-like synths that immediately give the song a baroque feeling. Wes Eisold’s voice, laden with a haunting gravitas, unfurls like a shroud of mist, enveloping the listener in a ritualistic narrative that is a buoyant phantasmagoria. The song is an embodiment of the gothic undertones that have been imbued into music since the classical era up until punk took the reigns, so to speak, of this nocturnal dance. Conjured from the depths of a neon-lit abyss where shadows contort in an eternal ballet, “She Reigns Down” is an invitation to don your darkest attire and lose yourself in the kind of dark masquerade you would find in a film by Federico Fellini.

Since their inception in 2007, Cold Cave have consistently forged their own path through in the underground music scene, fusing all the best elements of post-punk, darkwave, and synth-pop while amassing a formidable discography that includes singles, LPs, EPs, and compilations. Their dedication to their craft saw them reissue landmark albums such as “Cremations,” “Love Comes Close,” “Cherish The Light Years,” “Full Cold Moon,” and “Fate In Seven Lessons” on luxurious 180-gram vinyl through Heartworm Press, reaffirming their legacy while propelling them into the vanguard of the genre.

The band’s live presence has been equally spectral and commanding, with Cold Cave haunting stages alongside titans like Depeche Mode and The Cult throughout 2023.

Last year, the band shared a previously unreleased track called “You Really Could Have Had It All,” which was recorded around 2021. 2023 also saw the release of a cover of Psychic TV’s “Godstar.”

With any luck, “She Reigns Down” will be the first of more new music to be released by Cold Cave in 2024.

ABORTED stellen ihr neues Album “Vault Of Horrors” mit einer dritten Single vor: “Condemned To Rot” gibt es als Clip bei YouTube. Mit dabei ist zudem Pianist Francesco Paoli (FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE).

Auch “Dreadbringer” ist als Visualizer bei YouTube verfügbar und enthält ein Feature von SHADOW OF INTENT-Frontmann Ben Duerr. Zu ‘Death Cult’ gibt es ebenfalls ein Video bei YouTube, der Song ist auch eine Hommage an “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”, als Gast hat DESPISED ICON-Sänger Alex Erian mitgewirkt.

Alex Erian ist nicht der einzige Kollege, der auf dem Album zu hören ist. Zu ihm gesellen sich unter anderem Johnny Ciardullo (CARCOSA / ANGELMAKER), Ben Duerr (SHADOW OF INTENT) und Francesco Paoli (FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE).

“Vault Of Horrors” erschien am 15. März 2024, im Anschluss ist die Death Metal-Band auf Tour. Mit dabei sind CARNIFEX, REVOCATION und VEXED.

Calling him, Feeling the void, for the sake of your mind

Mit “Where Nothing Grows” wird in wenigen Wochen das neue Album der Blackened Sludge Metal-Band OFFERNAT erscheinen. Es ist nach “All Colours Retract” (2022) das zweite Album des dänischen Duos, welches aus Anders Kargaard Bork und Jonas Bangstrup besteht.

“Where Nothing Grows” wurde gemeinsam mit Simon Sonne Andersen (ORM, Ex-BY THE PATIENT) im Full Moon Studio aufgenommen und gemixt und von Brad Boatright (u.a. für BODY VOID tätig) bei Audiosiege gemastert. Das Cover-Artwork stammt von Stefan Thanneur (u.a. für SVART CROWN tätig). Erscheinen wird das Album am 29. März 2024 via Indisciplinarian. Vorab gibt es den Titeltrack zu hören.

Die Metalcore-Band ANCHORAGE hat einen neuen Track samt Musikvideo veröffentlicht: “Uncontrolled” bei YouTube.

Mit “Rapture” wird in einigen Wochen das neue Symphonic / Melodic Power Metal Album von ANETTE OLZON erscheinen. Es ist nach “Shine” (2014) und “Strong” (2021) das dritte Album der schwedischen Band rund um die namensgebende Anette Olzon Sängerin (THE DARK ELEMENT, ULTIMA GRACE, Ex-NIGHTWISH). Weitere Band-Mitglieder sind Produzent, Gitarrist, Bassist und Keyboarder Magnus Karlsson (PRIMAL FEAR, THE FERRYMEN, MAGNUS KARLSSON’S FREE FALL, Ex-ALLEN – LANDE), Drummer Anders Köllerfors (HEART HEALER, NARNIA) sowie Johan Husgafvel, der die Growls beisteuert.

“Rapture” wurde von Jacob Hansen gemixt und gemastert und wird am 10. Mai 2024 via Frontiers Music erscheinen. Vorab gibt es zum Opener “Heed The Call” ein Lyric-Video.
