In the time it takes to misplace your favourite black eyeliner (that’s about five years if you have a secret compartment in your makeup drawer), the Italian architects of all things gloriously gloomy, Date at Midnight, have been conspicuously MIA. But fear not, this ensemble of macabre misfits is slinking back into the moonlight., with May 3rd heralding the unleashing of their new LP, Fading Into This Grace, upon the world, courtesy of Manic Depression Records.

This brooding quartet, emerging from the shadowy lanes of Rome, features Daniele De Angelis with his otherworldly vocals, Pasquale Vico on the bass and synthesizers, Francesco Mignogna with his commanding percussion, and Manuel Mazzenga on the guitar and synthesizers. Since their formation in 2007, they’ve been penning a dark tribute to the luminaries of gothic rock. Picture a gathering where the somber tunes of Joy Division’s tenebrous tracks intertwine with Bauhaus’ spectral presence, Sisters of Mercy’s haunting echoes blend with The Cure’s darkest epoch, all enshrouded by the iciness of Christian Death, Fields of the Nephilim, and Mephisto Walz. This band is a revival of the deep, theatrical essence of classic gothic rock, with each note a homage to its dusky magnificence.

Date at Midnight is dialing up the drama and serving us a slice of the uncanny with their latest single, Another Grace, with enough edge to slice through the thickest of existential fog. This is a tracks so theatrical and relentless, it could wake the dead or at least get them tapping a bony foot.

Another Grace asks hard philosophical questions: In these dark times, is there room for a different kind of grace? A grace that’s not just about light at the end of the tunnel but finding a strange beauty in the tunnel itself? Date at Midnight invites you to ponder this as you sway to their symphony, leaving you with a lingering sense of wonder – and perhaps, just a touch of delicious unease.

The music video, directed by Sara Antal, Mattia Caterina, and Alessia Pirrottinais, an eerie nod to odd fellows David Lynch and Tim Burton, as we are lured through a dreamscape where innocence and hope take a detour into the bizarre. This version of Alice In Wonderland contains walls lined with velvet drapes and creepy hooded figures – and every shadow whispers a secret.

Paysage D'Hivers Doppelalbum "Im Wald" kam vor Kurzem heraus und begeisterte sofort Fans wie auch Kritiker. Nun reicht Wintherr einen Nachtrag in Form der EP "Im Traum" ein, die alternative Interpretationen zweier Stücke des Albums enthält.

"Ich habe bei "Le Rêve Lucide" und "Kaelteschauer" immer eine tiefere Ebene mit meinen inneren Ohren gehört, welche ich in diesen Liedern selber nicht direkt umsetzen konnte", erklärt der Schweizer Künstler. "Irgendwann ist der physisch mögliche Klangraum einfach gefüllt; bei diesen zwei Liedern war es so klar und intensiv, dass ich unbedingt ausprobieren wollte, ob ich diese sicht- bzw. hörbar machen kann. Wie ich persönlich finde, hat es überraschend gut funktioniert.”

“Penitence” wurde gemeinsam mit Marc-Antoine Desjardins und Raphael Malenfant bei Broil Audio aufgenommen, von Andy Nelson bei Bricktop Recording gemixt und von Will Putney bei Graphic Nature Audio gemastert. Within Los Angeles: a city brimming with eclectic spirits and untold stories, resides alternative rock artist Taleen Kali. 2023 marked a significant feather in this accomplished polymath’s cap with the release of her first full-length album, “Flower Of Life,” via Dum Dum Records. Noteworthy names like The Smashing Pumpkins’ Jeff Schroeder and Josiah Mazzaschi added their magic at The Cave Studio to this piece de resistance.

Doch wir sprechen hier von John, Paul, George, Pete und Stuart! Jenen fünf jungen Männern aus Liverpool, die am 16. August 1960 als THE BEATLES in Hamburg-St. Pauli eintrafen, um im Rotlichtviertel der Hafenstadt für kleines Geld ihr Glück zu versuchen.

So weit und zutreffend der Text auf dem Rückdeckel von „Vom Bambi Kino in den Buckingham Palast“, in dem Nicola Bardola und Herbert Hauke mithilfe von zum Teil noch nie öffentlich gezeigten Dokumenten, Verträgen, Abrechnungen, Briefen und Bildmaterial einen faszinierenden Blick hinter die Kulissen ermöglichen.

Die Beatles auf St. Pauli
Dem eher oberflächlichen BEATLES-Kenner wird dabei ein Eintauchen in die Anfangszeit der Liverpooler Superstars ermöglicht und darüber hinaus eine Zeitreise in die Sechzigerjahre per se. Dabei stehen im Buch neben eher uninteressanten Quellen wie Tankbelegen oder Versicherungsscheinen auch seltenes Bildmaterial, skurrile Einblicke in die auch schon damals ausufernde und lähmende deutsche Bürokratie (wie Vergnügungssteueranmeldungen oder Anträge auf Arbeitserlaubnis, von den Briten mit krakeliger Handschrift selbst ausgefüllt) und berührende Zeichnungen von Klaus Voormann, dem Gestalter des Covers des „Revolver“-Albums.

Eine Zeitreise in die Sechzigerjahre
Viele Originaltöne und lakonische, mal unkommentierte, mal kommentierte Belege (zum Beispiel kommentiert der Besteller eines Flügels für JERRY LEE LEWIS trocken: „Es erscheint ratsam vorher die 125.- DM für den Flügel der letzten Bestellung zu überweisen.“) zeichnen ein Bild der Clubs auf St. Pauli, in denen sich die Prominenz der Sixties die Klinke in die Hand gab.

Kein kleinteiliges, buchhalterisches Faktengehubere
Die größte Stärke des Buchs ist aber gerade nicht das kleinteilige, buchhalterische Faktengehubere, sondern das Zeichnen eines kompletten Bildes einer kurzen, aber prägenden Zeitspanne der Musikgeschichte. So wird im Laufe des Buches auf viele andere Künstler, die Clublandschaft in Hamburg und Liverpool und begleitende Medien wie die „Bravo“ eingegangen.

Tanz Akademie, a ragtag bunch of six from the nooks of Piedmont, Italy, is gearing up to toss their hat into the alternative rock ring with their inaugural album, Hullabaloo.  Dropping on April 26th, 2024, via Overdub Recordings, Hullabaloo is the band’s open diary – penned, no less, in a whirlwind week of recording frenzy. This particular ghost doesn’t just stir up chaos from the shadows; it’s practically a master of mischief, serenading on your hallway piano, engaging in a game of spectral hide-and-seek in the quirkiest corners of your space, and transforming your abode into a fortress of solitude. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any weirder, this ghostly presence, having pilfered the company of your friends, morphs into an eerie ally.

Musically, The Ghost is an anarchic blend of punk’s raw edge and a marching band gone rogue—think brass and whistles colliding with electric guitar in a symphony of organized chaos. There are elements of  The Blitz, The Stranglers, Madness, The Jam, and Dexy’s Midnight Runners in their sound, but with a more avant-garde jazz edge reminiscent of Tuxedomoon.  It’s a track that paints a grand, almost baroque picture, then gleefully tears it down with a power chord.

The delightfully kooky video, directed by Lorenzo Cavaiuolo, Michele Reggio, Alessandro Furio, Giovanni Lo Vano, takes the themes of the song and develops them into a cohesive storyline.

“Anxiety, depression, and disorders of the psyche are personified by three creatures: a Ghost, a Hare-Man, and a Fawn-Lady,” the band explains. “Initially, the protagonist is shown apparently living alone in an estate or castle. As the narrative develops, the creatures begin to enter his life, initially as unwanted guests who settle in his house, then as friends and playmates, who pity him and take care of him. The ending is evidently open-ended, the presences remain, and we do not understand whether the protagonist accepts them (proactively and light-heartedly) or surrenders to them (passively).”

The dynamic six-piece ensemble, comprising Luca Assisi on guitar, Michele Reggio on bass, Francesco Nada juggling saxophone and guitar duties, Matteo Boglietti mastering the french horn and other brass instruments, and Giovanni Lo Vano leading with vocals and guitar, is electrifying audiences across northern and central Italy. Their burgeoning reputation in the local music scene is a testament to their unique sound, and they’re set to take this sonic adventure to Europe in 2024, marking their first international tour.

Die Alternative Pop / Rock / Folk-Band KALANDRA hat mit “The State of the World” eine neue Single veröffentlicht. Das Lied kann als ein Gesang an die Menschheit verstanden werden, als ein Plädoyer für den Frieden.

Im Oktober 2023 ist mit “Bardaginn” eine weitere Single erschienen. Der Titel bedeutet “Kampf” oder “Schlacht”, ob er nun innerlich oder draußen in der realen Welt ausgetragen wird.

Die Band war zudem im Herbst 2023 gemeinsam mit A.A. WILLIAMS auf Europa-Tour. Mit im Gepäck hatten die Norweger dabei ihr Debütalbum “The Line” (2020). Zum Albumtrack “Ensom” hat die Band erst kürzlich ein Live-Video veröffentlicht.

„Ich bin der Hunger, den du nicht mehr verspürst.“ In einem seltenen Anflug der Ernsthaftigkeit lässt ALESTORM-Sänger Christopher Bowes für einen Augenblick hinter die Fassade des immer fröhlichen Party-Sängers blicken. Auch deshalb habe der Text des Titelstücks „Voyage Of The Dead Marauder“ für den Frontmann eine besondere Bedeutung, wie er vor EP-Release auf der Diskussionsplattform Reddit verriet.

Eine Offenlegung, die durchaus überrascht, denn müde oder gar zweifelnd erscheint die Pirate-Metal-Band auf diesem Zwischenhappen zu keiner Zeit. Im Gegenteil, setzt das geradlinige „Voyage Of The Dead Marauder“ direkt Kurs gen Horizont und spielt dabei das rockige Fundament gegen einen erhebenden Refrain aus – als würde uns Gastsängerin Patty Gurdy mit Feuereifer den Mut zusprechen, bloß nicht den Kopf hängen zu lassen.

ALESTORM besinnen sich auf ihre Stärken, ohne nur Althergebrachtes wiederzukäuen
Selbiges würde wohl ohnehin gegen die Natur ALESTORMs sprechen, die sich auch im Folgenden auf ihre Stärken zurückbesinnen. Das unbeschwerte „Uzbekistan“ ist eine tanzbare Folk-Nummer, die in der Bridge mittels elektronischer Unterstützung unverhohlen einen Gruß in Richtung ELECTRIC CALLBOY aussendet. Dass das kauzige „The Last Saskatchewan Pirate“ im Anschluss Irish-Folk-Anleihen in ein fröhliches Rock-Gewand kleidet, ist im Prinzip nur der nächstlogische Schritt.

Ein wenig Internetkultur und Blödelei bildet schließlich den Abschluss dieser kurzweiligen EP: Neben der instrumentalen „Port Sarim“-Musikuntermalung „Sea Shanty 2“ aus dem „RuneScape“-Universum ist das finale „Cock“ nichts anderes als die Vertonung eines Reddit-Threads aus dem Jahr 2023, als ein Nutzer von einem Traum berichtete, in welchem ALESTORM eben jenen Song veröffentlicht hätten – inklusive des Refrains „Hey, Cock! And Fuck Your Balls!“. Unterlegt mit einem folkigen Fundament trifft das Ergebnis den Nagel auf den Kopf und lässt dadurch eigentlich nur ein Fazit zu – seinen Appetit dürfte ALESTORM-Frontmann Chris Bowes spätestens mit dieser Veröffentlichung wiedergefunden haben.

Alex Henry Foster, once the electrifying leader of the Juno-nominated band Your Favorite Enemies, has taken a deep dive into uncharted waters with his latest creation, Voyage à la Mer. With this artistic endevour, Foster plunges into the tumultuous sea of human emotions, inspired by a soul-stirring journey to Japan in 2010. The project is as much a poetic diary as it is an exploration of our primal bond with water—encompassing the dawn of existence, sacred voyages, moments of transformation, and the eternal cycle of life and death.

The genesis of Voyage à la Mer traces back to a poignant encounter in Japan with the grieving parents of a young fan. The tragedy, woven through letters exchanged with the fan, set Foster on a path of introspection and healing, especially as he grappled with his own mortality during a critical heart surgery. Stripped of his voice and facing an uncertain future, Foster’s journey mirrors the ebb and flow of existence itself, marking “Voyage à la Mer” as a deeply personal attestation to the resilience of the human spirit.

“I was in no other position than to either feel sorry for myself or have a prolonged look with myself to figure out who I was beyond the distressing sensation of losing my identity,” muses Foster. “The introspective clarity brought me right back to Japan, in what had been for me a transformative experience almost fifteen years ago, highlighted by the long-forgotten fragments of film, photographs, and people’s testimonies I had the privilege of witnessing.”

As Foster began to find his strength again, he reached out to his old pal and creative cohort, Ben Lemelin, for a helping hand in the creative process. With his voice still on the mend, the pair decided to bring in a fresh talent to breathe life into their nascent project. Enter Momoka Tobari, whose voice would become the soul of their inaugural venture, christened Kimiyo. It was a move that not only marked Foster’s resilient return to the artistic arena, but also showcased the power of collaboration and new beginnings in the face of adversity.

Today, Alex Henry Foster shares the first single A Silent Stream, off of the upcoming LP Kimiyo, due April 26. A Silent Stream is a contemplative journey within ourselves, designed for us to discover the purpose of days passing by, beyond the illusion of control over “time” and the meanings we’d like to believe in.

The lyrics, spoken in Japanese, weave a poignant narrative of searching for meaning amidst life’s chaos. They explore themes of isolation, the quest for understanding, and the longing for connection. Reflecting on the ephemeral nature of comfort and the struggle with personal and collective identity, the words paint a landscape of introspection and yearning.

“I have always been looking for a pretext or an excuse to work with Momoka,” says Foster about the upcoming LP. “She’s got a very unique spirit, and she’s a very inspiring and insightful person.We have a common view about life in general and spirituality in particular, but most of all, she is a fantastic artist for whom I have the utmost admiration. When it became obvious to me that I would be in no way capable of singing or speaking on the songs we had sketched, Momoka was in my opinion the only person able to transcend the project’s spirit. The poetry of Voyage à la Mer was to be the core holding the whole project together, but I wanted Momoka to make her own interpretation of the lyrical undercurrent and to express herself in her native tongue, so she wouldn’t have to be my voice or try to emulate what my words might convey. We set the canvas, laid down the color palettes, but it was for her to express herself and be the painting.”

Alex Henry Foster has crafted four different creative entities; the albums Kimiyo and A Measure of Space and Sounds, the film Voyage à la Mer, and the in-public conversations & live musical improvisation affair Of Flashes and Other Currents, all due to be released over the span of 2024. He spoke with Post-Punk.com about the project, his insights, and the meaning behind the poetic video.

1. How did this project come to fruition, and what was the experience like working with Momoka? Can you speak about the songwriting process with her?

The project came together very organically. Although she had often collaborated on several of my songs in the past, I had been entertaining the idea of crafting an entire album with Momoka for quite a while already. However, my schedule wasn’t allowing much flexibility to dwell on the specific type of creative endeavor I was envisioning for us to work on. So when I realized and accepted that I would be “grounded”, for what seemed an extensive period following my heart surgery, this highly frustrating kind of situation I was dealing with became a blessing in disguise. Not only would I finally be able to work with Momoka, but it would also become such a positive experience that it undeniably contributed to my physical recovery and prevented me from falling into depression. The genuine singularity of those songs came out of Momoka’s openness to go beyond her cultural discomfort, as most of the themes we explored had a significant measure of spiritual intimacy and personal questioning. But her willingness to press on allowed her to become the journey itself. Therefore, the songwriting was more in the likes of a conversational flow than what we had both experienced in the past. And since the album is primarily centered on its lyrical content, her embodiment of its nature made the record an authentic and heartfelt voyage, as much as an honest and fulfilling one.

2. You mention the death and afterlife cycle as inspiration for your songwriting, is there a specific moment outside of your life-threatening surgery that caused such contemplation?

I think it all goes back to my late father’s obsession with everything unknown, and his longing to find meaning and purpose in his life. There were enough esoteric books scattered around the house to be considered a legitimate spiritual bookstore, and there were countless conversations about the subject at home. If the quest to find the absolute was a lifelong journey for him, it became a sort of introspective musing for me—one that has more to do with personal emancipation and inner freedom than trying to understand dogmas and doctrines. The only truth there is in spirituality is the rejection of such a concept in the first place. So it isn’t really tied to a specific moment, but rather a growing fascination with the possibility of consciousness emancipation, if that makes sense

3. Your video features the ocean and you often mention your connection to bodies of water, where did this come from? Do you feel your most inspired lyrics arise near a body of water?

I always felt connected to that sort of pure and free type of energy. It’s chaos and structure in their most vibrant forms of balance. I have always been attracted to such an unpredictable kind of power. It’s a reflection of “God” to me in a way; both benevolent and implacable, blessing and plague. There are rituals involving “water” in every culture and belief… it’s timeless.

I almost drowned as a kid, urged to take off on a tiny floating boat to get in the middle of a massive lake while my parents were briefly distracted. I instinctively jumped into the water to feel what it was like to be weightless, to lose control. My father reached out to me just in time, as I was simply letting go in the water. I wouldn’t say it’s quite normal behavior for a 5 or 6-year-old child to do that. I’m no expert, but I figure it ain’t. My father started to hide his books about the nature of eternity right after that. Coincidence? Maybe not

4. What are your biggest musical inspirations right now?

Always a difficult question for me to answer in general, but considering that I’m already back in the studio right now, I would say my inspirations include Glenn Branca, Tindersticks, Akira Kosemura, Leonard Cohen, and Sonic Youth.

Die Heavy Rock / Metal-Band HOLY MOTHER veröffentlicht am 7. Juni 2024 ihr neues Album “Rise” via Massacre Records auf CD, Vinyl sowie digital. Als Vorgeschmack teilte die Gruppe den Track “Fire” als Videoclip bei YouTube.

Sänger Mike Tirelli erklärt zur Nummer:

„In diesem Song geht es um eine toxische Sucht nach Liebe, die nie aufhört und einen für immer verfolgt. Was mich zu diesem Song inspiriert hat, war, dass ich Menschen kenne, die einfach nicht aus ihrer Beziehung herauskommen und ihrem Elend endlich ein Ende setzen wollen.

Ganz am Anfang des Tracks ist auch die unheimliche Stimme meiner Tochter Violet zu hören, die damals erst 14 Jahre alt war. Ihre Stimme gab den musikalischen Ton und die Stimmung vor, die mich zu dieser speziellen Gesangsmelodie inspirierte; wie ein Schrei der Qual und des Schmerzes.“

Eigentlich sagt der oben stehende Einleitungssatz schon so ziemlich alles über CANTIQUE LÉPREUXes drittes Album, denn „Le banissement“ ist so etwas wie ein reinrassiges Genrewerk. Dass das nichts Schlechtes sein muss, beweisen die Metal Noir Qois-Vertreter sehr selbstbewusst. Über die Dauer von sieben Songs rasen CANTIQUE LÉPREUX durch die nächtlichen kanadischen Wälder und hinterlassen ein heimeliges, nostalgisches Gefühl. Denn „Le banissement“ klingt überaus anachronistisch.

Auch wenn „Le banissement“ hier und da grimmig ist, die Melancholie dominiert auf dem dritten Album von CANTIQUE LÉPREUX.
Was man CANTIQUE LÉPRAUX vorwerfen kann ist, dass sie absolut nicht originell sind. Irgendwo zwischen schwedischem Melodic Black Metal der Neunziger wie SACRAMENTUM, ein wenig folkigem Anstrich und moderneren Vertretern des Genres wie AARA oder auch WALLFAHRER, aber mit altmodischer Attitüde und ebensolcher Klangästhetik, verschafft „Le banissement“ eine Dreiviertelstunde Weltflucht. Oft dominiert die Melancholie in den Songs, selbst der aggressiv und garstig beginnende Titelsong wird am Ende irgendwie versöhnlich. Kein Wunder: CANTIQUE LÉPREUX begleiten auf diesem Konzeptalbum ein Mädchen, das der bösen Zivilisation entkommt und in der Wildnis bleibt, um Selbstheilung zu erfahren.

Ergo ist das, was wir hören grimmig und irgendwie naturromantisch verklärt und sowas wie ein neues, bekanntes Outdoor-Reality-Format für das Black Metal-Publikum. Aber lassen wir den Schmäh: CANTIQUE LÉPREUX lassen auch die Musik sprechen. Hochmelodische und atmosphärische Songs wie der Opener „Le ravissment“, „Par le gueule des fantômes“ und das mitreißende „Consécration“ finden eine gute Balance aus frostiger Atmosphäre und Eingängigkeit, während die Musiker auf „La rêve primordial“ etwas mehr die Zähne zeigen. „Le banissement“ ist somit weit davon entfernt stumpf zu sein, auch wenn es zusätzliche folkige Elemente der Dynamik gutgetan hätten.

„Le banissement“ ist kein neuer Klassiker, aber ein solider Genre-Beitrag: CANTIQUE LÉPREUX beherrschen die Regeln des Black Metal.
CANTIQUE LÉPREUX sind routiniert in Sachen Songwriting und Performance und haben in „Le banissement“ viele verschiedene Stimmungen und etliche Details versteckt. Dass der transparente und doch druckvolle Sound auch einen Hauch Tägtgren-Neunziger-Ästhetik innehat, lässt das Album noch sympathischer werden. All das macht noch kein neues „Memoria Vetusta III: Saturnian Poetry“, wohl aber einen soliden Genrebeitrag. Und das sollte nicht unterschätzt werden, selbst wenn „Le banissement“ Ende 2024 bei den alljährlichen AOTY-Listen nicht das erste Album sein wird, das in den Sinn kommen wird.

Wertung: 7 von 10 Aussteigerphantasien

Cherry Red Records, home to some of the most cherished names in independent, underground music, has just announced a new four-disc CD boxset, this time turning their focus to the ever-present darkwave movement, which began in the late 1970s/early 1980s and still permeates the post-punk scene to date. Titled No Songs Tomorrow – Darkwave, Ethereal Rock, and Coldwave 1981-1990 and curated once more by our very own Frank Deserto, the box focuses on the early years of the darkwave movement, featuring a healthy blend of both American and European artists. The box will be released on May 31st, 2024 and is now available for pre-order via Cherry Red’s website.

Darkwave, for our money, has always been a difficult scene to pin down. While most microgenres often center around one particular location or record label, darkwave slowly trickled into public consciousness through different pathways. While you could easily trace the roots of the movement to The Cure, Joy Division, and Depeche Mode, there exists both a European variant, which walked a fine line between EBM and aggressive, yet-romantic electro, and the American variant, which was championed in part by Projekt Records in the late 80s. Of course, it’s not as black and white as all that, but Cherry Red’s selections not only offer a fine mixture of both variants, but nestles deep cuts and rare tracks along classic tracks to give a suitable snapshot into a curious and rewarding scene. Genre staples such as Alien Sex Fiend, Malaria!, Attrition, and Kirlian Camera appear alongside lesser-known, but equally tremendous artists such as Lars Falk (of Twice a Man), Third Mind flagship artists Bushido and Beautiful Pea Green Boat, New York favorites Requiem In White, and Collection d’Arnell-Andréa, a French coldwave band who is a must-hear for fans of Dead Can Dance/In the Nursery (both which also appear on this collection). Clan of Xymox, who rank high among the genre’s definitive artists, offer up a rare 7”-only recording of “Louise,” the centerpiece of their sophomore masterpiece Medusa, which makes the set a must-have on that basis alone. The full box also features rare photos, artwork, and an essay by Deserto.

PEARL JAM veröffentlichen ihr zwölftes Studioalbum: “Dark Matter” erscheint am 19. April 2024, die zweite Single “Running” steht jetzt als Visualizer via YouTube bereit.

Auch zum Titelsong “Dark Matter” gibt es vorab einen Visualizer-Clip bei YouTube.

Im Mai bricht die Grungeband zu einer 35-tägigen Welttournee auf. In Deutschland sind zwei Konzerte angekündigt: PEARL JAM spielen am 2. und 3. Juli 2024 in Berlin auf der Waldbühne.

“Dark Matter” wurde von Andrew Watt produziert, das Album entstand im Shangri-La Studio in Malibu.

“Yksi Yhteinen Yhteiskunta” (zu Deutsch “eine einzige / gemeinsame Gesellschaft”) – so nennt sich das zweite Album der Finnen I HELVETE. Der Albumtitel bezieht sich dabei auf die Geschichte einer Bewegung, die zur Erhaltung der Nachhaltigkeit des Planeten radikale Maßnahmen vorzunehmen glaubt: Auf der Tagesordnung steht der große “Reset”, bei dem die große Mehrheit der Menschen eliminiert werden soll. Eingeführt wird man in diese Erzählung durch den gelungenen Titeltrack zu Beginn, der leicht cineastisch angehaucht mit gesprochenen (finnischen) Lyrics den Hörer atmosphärisch (und inhaltlich, so man denn etwas Finnisch verstehen würde) einführt. Doch es ist gerade die finnische Sprache und deren Tonalität, die dem Album die besondere Würze verleihen.

I HELVETE beherrschen die melodische Klaviatur des extremen Metals
Aber auch musikalisch weiß die 2018 gegründete Band zu überzeugen, wenn sie – geradezu typisch Finnisch – die melodische Klaviatur des extremen Metals schier mühelos auf und ab spielt, und dann doch immer wieder genügend Härte, Aggressivität und Dunkelheit miteinbringen können. Dabei gelingt es I HELVETE, die treibenden und schwarzmetallischen Uptempo-Passagen geschmeidig in ruhigere Passagen übergehen zu lassen. Manche Stilelemente sind dann aber des Guten fast zu viel – etwa die weiblichen Gast-Vocals von Anna Pellikka (STAR INSIGHT). Diese sind bestenfalls okay und geben darüber hinaus den jeweiligen Songs (etwa “Uuden Ajan ABC”) keinen zwingenden Mehrwert. Vor allem, weil der hauptamtliche Sänger Aleksi Mäkelä (alleine) mit seinen Growls durchaus eine Oktav abzudecken weiß.

Doch davon abgesehen ist “Yksi Yhteinen Yhteiskunta” ein richtig starkes Album, das sowohl musikalisch als auch inhaltlich zu überzeugen weiß. Schade ist hier nur, dass dem Cover-Artwork nicht mehr Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt worden ist.

Täubchenthal, Leipzig, Germany 22nd March 2024Ensalved - “European Spring Tour 2024” - Support: Svalbard & Wayfarer ENSLAVED visited the Täubchenthal in Leipzig on their “European Spring Tour 2024” together with SVALBARD from Bristol UK and WAYFARER from Denver USA. With their current album ‘Heimdal’ and the special guests, the Norwegians are bringing their concentrated load of Avant-Garde Extreme Metal with a progressive edge to German clubs. I was lucky to had the possibility to capture pictures for you from the show. The Täubchenthal was well filled on this evening and as always, I was happy about the very good sound at the Täubchenthal.
