Die Symphonic Fantasy Power Metal-Band KNIGHTFALL hat mit “The Hero Walks Alone” ein weiteres Video ihres neuen Albums “Destiny Calling” veröffentlicht. Es ist das erste Album des Solo-Projekts von Keyboarder Keith Dombrowski (Ex-EVINCE ETHOS), der sich eine Reihe an Gast-Musiker mit ins Boot geholt hat. Erschienen ist das Album, das mit einem Cover-Artwork von Thomas Ewerhard ausgestattet wurde, am 29. März 2024.

Ich möchte ja hier eigentlich nicht die abgedroschene Floskel über den „Propheten im eigenen Lande“ bemühen, aber auf XMAL DEUTSCHLAND trifft dies leider zu. Die deutsche Post Punk/Dark Wave-Band startete Anfang der 80er Jahre in Hamburg gleich auf Alfred Hilsberg Zickzack-Label mit der Single „Schwarze Welt“, der auf dem Fuße gleich noch die 12“ „Incubus Succubus“ folgte. Da sich ein Erfolg bzw. eine Anerkennung der forschen Frauen-Band (ähnlich MALARIA!) allerdings nicht wirklich einstellen wollte, überquerte man darauf den „Kanal“, um dort in UK sofort einen Vertrag beim renommierten 4AD-Label zu bekommen. Es folgten zwei vielbeachtete Alben und eine Peel-Session, bevor die Major-Industrie auf XMAL DEUTSCHLAND aufmerksam wurden und die Band in deren Mühlen Ende der 80er letztendlich zermahlen wurde. Es ist schon bezeichnend, dass sich jetzt gut 40 Jahre später gerade ein amerikanisches Hipster-Label beflissen fühlt, das rare und gesuchte Frühwerk der Band endlich wieder zugänglich zu machen. So führt Sacred Bones die beiden Zickzack-Platten zusammen und fügt mit dem „Kälbermarsch“ von der „Lieber Zuviel als Zuwenig“-Compilation, wie der Live-Version von „Allein“ vom „Nosferatu Festival“-Sampler zwei ebenso seltene Bonus-Tracks hinzu. Somit liegt das noch deutlich rauere und experimentellere Frühwerk von XMAL DEUTSCHLAND erstmals im CD- und wieder Vinyl-Format vor. Jenes erfreut sich scheinbar allgemeinen Interesses, da dieses sogar von Amazon als Nummer 1-Genre-Bestseller gelistet wird. Dem nicht genug, wartet die ehemalige Frontfrau Anja Huwe parallel mit ihrem ersten Solo-Album „Codes“ auf, was einer noch größeren Sensation gleich kommt, da sich ja seit dem Ende der Band komplett der Musik abgeschworen und erfolgreich eine Laufbahn als bildende Künstlerin eingeschlagen hatte. Des weiteren ist schon eine Box mit dem kompletten Oeuvre der 4AD-Zeit von XMAL DEUTSCHLAND angekündigt und damit die Band nun offensichtlich endlich ihre längst ausstehende umfassende Würdigung erhält. Wenn auch nur postum, denn eine Reunion der Band hat Anja Huwe weiterhin ausgeschlossen, aber ich wäre mir da nicht so sicher, da Ex-XMAL DEUTSCHLAND-Gitarristin Manuela Rickers auch auf „Codes“ zu hören ist! Dazu jedoch an andere Stelle mehr und freuen uns erst einmal über die „Early Singles“ als interessantes, wichtiges und überraschend immer noch sehr frisches Zeitdokument einer starken Frauen-Formation aus einer längst vergangenen Ära. Die Technical Extreme Metal-Band WESTON SUPER MAIM hat nach dem Lyric-Video zu “Perfect Meadows In Every Direction” und dem Video zu “Autistic Kill Trance” nun auch den Titeltrack ihres neuen Albums “See You Tomorrow Baby” als Video-Clip veröffentlicht. Background/Info: Released by the end of 2023 this is the third full length album of German solo-project Synaptic Defect. Driven by Marc Tater (previously involved with Evil Sermon this is the first new album since 2008.

Content: This work takes us back in time awakening somewhere in the midst of the 90s. This is old-school EBM appealing for fans of bands like Skinny Puppy, Mortal Constraint and even Cat Rapes Dog. The songs are well-crafted, sometimes moving into a minimalistic approach. The second features a few more songs in the same vein plus remixes by Second Disease, Sleepwalk, Plastic Noise Experience, Serpents, T.A.N.K., Terminal State, R010r, Trilogy, tEaR!doWn and 2 remixes by Pyrroline (which co-produced and mastered the album).

+ + + : Synaptic Defect isn’t maybe the most renowned project although it deals with good-old EBM built up with elegance and knowledge. This project is part of an imaginary ‘Skinny Puppy’-academy and will please the fans of haunting Electronics. The bonus disc features cool songs as well plus a great selection of artists for the remixes. I especially recommend the remixes of Sleepwalk and Plastic Noise Experience.

– – – : The album is maybe missing a real ‘potential’ hit.

Conclusion: This album stands for an appreciable come-back and will be pleased by old-school EBM supporters.

Best songs: “Morphine”, “Sniper”, “Killing Tides” + “Man Is Machine”, “Tacky Games – Sleepwalk Remix”, “Combat War – Plastic Noise Experience Remix”.

Die Drone / Ambient-Band EVENTIDE hat nach dem Titeltrack mit “Sphere” einen zweiten Track ihres kommenden Albums “Waterline” veröffentlicht. Es ist das erste Album der Franzosen – und dieses ist, wie die Band selbst, etwas spontan und ungeplant entstanden, als dass die Progressive Death-Doom Metal-Band EPITAPHE während der Aufnahmen ihres Albums “II” eine solche Fülle von Ideen für ihre Tracks vorfand, dass EVENTIDE spontan gegründet wurde, um diese Ideen zum Leben zu erwecken.

And now for something completely different: a powerful collaboration between San Antonio post-punk trio Haunt Me, and Las Vegas K-Goth act past self, who have joined forces for a heretical gift for your Easter basket: a darkwave track titled Sinner.

The essence of Sinner lies in its raw, unfiltered portrayal of the realities faced by minorities who dare to diverge in their views and interests. It speaks to the alienation, the othering, and the internal strife that comes with the territory of being different in a homogenized world. Sinner holds up a mirror to a society that prides itself on principles of inclusivity and tolerance, yet often falls short when it comes to embracing diversity in its truest form.

“We believe this is the first trilingual goth/postpunk/darkwave song ever created and so it’s a modern day historical event in our humble opinion,” the band asserts. This unique endeavor blends the potent mix of Korean, delivered by past self, with Spanish from Haunt Me, and English where both acts unite. The seamless integration of these performances -both in language and in sound- is truly remarkable.

For those who see themselves in the lyrics, life is a constant negotiation between authenticity and assimilation. There’s a palpable tension in wanting to honour one’s roots and individuality, yet the expectations and norms of a dominant culture that, intentionally or not, imposes a stifling conformity. Sinner captures the essence of those who walk the tightrope between their distinct identity and the overwhelming pressure to blend in.

Moreover, Sinner sheds light on the spiritual dissonance that accompanies this cultural clash. For those ensconced in a society where Christianity is the majority’s moral and spiritual compass, diverging beliefs can often lead to an existential quandary. The title itself, Sinner, is evocative of this, conjuring up notions of moral judgement and redemption. The song, therefore, becomes a vessel for questioning, challenging, and ultimately seeking solace in one’s convictions, even when they are at odds with the dominant paradigm.

The beauty of Sinner lies not just in its ability to articulate the angst and aspiration of the marginalized but in its capacity to evoke empathy and understanding across the divide. It’s a reminder that beneath the surface of our societal structures and cultural norms, there are myriad human stories, each deserving of recognition and respect.

“Sinner” merges pulsing synths with the airy, spectral touch of shivering post-punk and gothic rock guitars. The vocals, carrying the weight of whispers from the beyond, intertwine with icy, dream-like melodies, offering a profound listening experience that transcends the ordinary.

We hear elements of The Cure, Clan of Xymox, The Drums, Hers, The Strokes, Beach Fossils, and Interpol in their unique fusion.

past self is a “nugoth band from Sin City,” in their words, comprised of Proteus, Spektor Aether. Originally called Luxury Furniture Store, the trio changed lanes for a more fitting name and released BEDROT last summer.

Die Alternative Pop / Rock / Folk-Band KALANDRA hat mit “The State of the World” eine neue Single veröffentlicht. Das Lied kann als ein Gesang an die Menschheit verstanden werden, als ein Plädoyer für den Frieden.

Im Oktober 2023 ist mit “Bardaginn” eine weitere Single erschienen. Der Titel bedeutet “Kampf” oder “Schlacht”, ob er nun innerlich oder draußen in der realen Welt ausgetragen wird.

Die Band wird  zudem im Herbst 2024 gemeinsam mit LILI REFRAIN auf Europa-Tour sein. Mit im Gepäck haben die Norweger dabei ihr Debütalbum “The Line” (2020). Zum Albumtrack “Ensom” hat die Band erst kürzlich ein Live-Video veröffentlicht.

Die Stoner / Doom Metal-Band SALTPIG hat einen Labeldeal bei Heavy Psych Sounds Records unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen wird das internationale Duo, welches aus Mitch Davis (SUNBOMB), der eher als Produzent bekannt ist, und Fabio Alessandrini (BONFIRE, ANNIHILATOR) besteht, am 31. Mai 2024 ihr selbstbetiteltes Debütalbum auch als CD und LP veröffentlichen. Im Eigenvertrieb erschien bereits die digitale und eine Tape-Version des Albums. MARJANA SEMKINA (IAMTHEMORNING, MAER) hat mit “Sirin” ein neues Solo-Album angekündigt. Es ist nach “Sleepwalking” (2020) das zweite Album der Russin, die nun aber hauptsächlich in Großbritannien lebt.

“Sirin ist ein Fabelwesen aus der alten slawischen Mythologie, halb Vogel, halb Frau, sie ist ein Vorbote des Unglücks und des Todes, und es wird geglaubt, dass, wenn man Sirin begegnet, eine große Katastrophe passiert – außer im Falle der Ereignisse um dieses Album ist es bereits geschehen. Sirin weint und trauert um die Menschheit, und nichts könnte in der heutigen Zeit passender sein”, sagt Semkina. “Ich war nie sehr politisch und habe immer versucht, meine Kunst im Bereich der Überlieferungen, der Literatur und der Fantasie zu halten. Aber wenn Ereignisse wie der aktuelle Einmarsch der Russen in die Ukraine passieren, ist es unmöglich – und ich würde sogar sagen, unverzeihlich – zu schweigen und nichts zu tun.”

In an era increasingly defined by divisive rhetoric and political disarray, French project The Memory Of Snow presents their World Cup EP as a timely meditation on the forces that both unite and separate us. Amidst ideological rifts and dehumanizing judgments that pervade our daily discourse, this collection of songs serves as both a critique and a call to action, urging listeners to reflect on the undercurrents of empathy and solidarity that are often overshadowed by conflict.

Incorporating elements reminiscent of Ultravox and Depeche Mode into the narrative of the EP’s title track World Cup, the arrangement takes a dramatic turn. The chorus, laced with a sardonic observation, ‘All it takes is a world cup or a terrorist attack to keep us together,’ is elevated by the stylish vocals, delivering each word with a potent mix of cynicism and intensity. This delivery is framed by pulsating, siren-like chiming synths (very reminiscent of Visage’s Fade to Grey), creating an immersive soundscape that amplifies the song’s thematic depth.

As the lyrics delve into the irony of our fleeting solidarity amidst global spectacles and shared tragedies, the synth-laden backdrop adds a haunting resonance to the message. ‘Do we really need to drift apart, be cast away, or throw stones? Empathy seems to fade away, so much cruelty and nothing to say.’ This verse, underscored by a growing chasm fueled by animosity and a decline in compassion, is punctuated by the dramatic interplay of art rock dynamics and enveloping synth textures, questioning the inevitability of divisions and calling for a resurgence of genuine unity and empathy.

Further emphasizing the call for a return to humanity, the song urges, ‘You can be a better being, open up your heart, look in the eyes of a stranger, we share the same soul.’ These words resonate as a powerful reminder of our shared human experience, challenging us to transcend the superficial divides that estrange us from one another.

This is followed by the old school late 70s synth-driven bit of biting social commentary, International, a scathing critique of the glamorous yet superficial lifestyle promoted by societal elites and influencers, from their high fashion and luxury accommodations to the allure of major cities worldwide. Despite the unattainable nature of these dreams for many, the seduction of such imagery often overshadows simpler joys in life, highlighting the pervasive influence of social media, consumerism, and globalized culture.

Medusa, with its ominous synth cinematics, and ardent vocals, explores pain, struggle, and the quest for retribution, addressing those who have suffered or felt marginalized. It suggests a growing resolve among the hurt and the overlooked to no longer remain passive, symbolized by the imagery of sharpened knives and drying out in the sun.  This shift turns every interaction into a confrontation, with the protagonist becoming a ‘sweet destroyer,’ indicating that even in moments of closeness, there’s a readiness to defend or attack.

White Fire emerges as a new-wave rock anthem, brilliantly weaving existential quandaries and introspective journeys typical of the genre. It explores the tension between life’s urgency and the search for clarity, alongside the overwhelming nature of truth that diminishes our perceived significance. The song delves into themes of innocence versus temptation and the loss of mental clarity, set against a backdrop of global indifference. A looming transformative force prompts deep introspection and a reassessment of our desires. The narrative crescendos with a collective yearning for something beyond the tangible, a “meta-world,” encapsulating the human quest to transcend the mundane and uncover deeper meanings.

The first of two covers on the EP, The Memory of Snow’s take on the great k.d. lang’s If I Were You,  puts a sauntering and contemplative darkwave twist on lang’s trademark twang, highlighting the ease and allure that come with being highly admired or popular, and fantasizing about the doors that such status would open. This yearning extends to a wish to trade places with someone else, believing that being in their position would grant access to unlimited possibilities and fulfillment of desires.

Build Me A House is a song that almost feels like that part of a concert, where the musician transitions to the piano with minimal guitar work and percussion like the stripped-down 70s-style rock Bowie was known to dabble in towards the end of his live tenure. The song oscillates between experiencing nature’s grandeur and deep love and battling despair and isolation. A longing for security and comfort emerges, symbolized by a plea for a protective “house.” Amidst turmoil, there’s a struggle for identity and belonging, encapsulating the universal quest for meaning in a chaotic world.

In their second cover, The Memory of Snow brings a somber and jazzy twist to “Pipeline” from Depeche Mode’s 1983 album, “Construction Time Again,” an album that interestingly takes its title from the lyrics of this track. Their rendition enriches the original’s exploration of themes such as hard work and time investment, and the idea of redistributing wealth to help those in need. The Memory of Snow’s version stands out by incorporating a melancholic blend of guitars, saxophone, and percolating synths, adding layers of depth and emotion.

Die Epic Heavy Metal-Band FLAMEKEEPER hat mit “Flamekeeper” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist das erste Album des von Marco S.Vermiglio (Ex-DEMONOMANCY) gegründeten Projekts, an dem auch Gitarrist Filipe Jesus Minhava und Drummer Axel Johansson (HANDS OF ORLAC, MALOKARPATAN, CHEVALIER) mitwirken.

Das Album, das am 10. Mai 2024 via Invictus Productions erscheinen wird, befasst sich mit Themen wie Befreiung, Glaube, Selbstentdeckung und Trotz. Vorab gibt es einen Video-Clip zum Titeltrack.

ALEX HENRY FOSTER hat mit “A Silent Stream” eine erste Single seines kommenden Albums “Kimiyo” veröffentlicht. Der Song sei eine kontemplative Reise in uns selbst, auf der wir den Sinn der vergehenden Tage entdecken können, jenseits der Illusion der Kontrolle über die “Zeit” und die Bedeutungen, an die wir gerne glauben würden.

“Kimiyo” ist das nach “Windows in the Sky” (2018) das zweite Solo-Albums des kanadischen Solo-Künstlers und früheren YOUR FAVORITE ENEMIES-Frontman. Unterstützt wurde der Musiker von dessen Landsmann Ben Lemelin und der Japanerin Momoka. Erscheinen wird das Album am 26. April 2024. Das Cover-Artwork stammt von Stéphanie Bujold.

Mit “Pohjola” wird in wenigen Wochen das neue Album der Pagan Black / Folk Metal-Band KORPITULI erscheinen. Es ist nach “The Ancient Spells of the Past” (2021) und “As Infinite Shadows of the Nightsky” (2022) der finnischen Band.

“Pohjola” ist in zwei thematische Kapitel unterteilt: Teil I: “Pohjoisen Kansan Taruja” erforscht mythologische Erzählungen aus der Sicht des Volkes von Pohjola, inspiriert von alten finnischen Gedichten und Reimen. Teil II: “Suomalaista Sielunmaisemaa” befasst sich mit dem Wesen der finnischen Identität, indem alte Volkslieder neu interpretiert werden, um Themen wie Trauer, Sturheit und die Heiligkeit der Natur und der Saunakultur zu vermitteln.

Erscheinen wird das Album am 19. April 2024 via Korpituli Productions. Vorab gibt es den Titeltrack zu hören. Das Cover ziert ein Bild des finnischen Malers Albert Edelfelt.

LACRIMAS PROFUNDERE haben mit “Obscurity” einen bislang unveröffentlichten Song im Netz geteilt. Entstanden ist der Track bei den Aufnahmen des Studioalbums “How To Shroud Yourself With Night” im Sommer 2021, er wurde damals allerdings nicht rechtzeitig fertig.

Produziert hat ‚Obscurity‘ Kristian ‘Kohle’ Kohlmannslehner im Kohlekeller Studio in Seeheim, gemastert hat den Track Tom Porcell im Limetree Studio.

Ab April sind LACRIMAS PROFUNDERE auf Tour, die Band spielt auf Festivals und gibt einige Clubkonzerte.

Die Power Metal-Band EREGION hat mit “Earendil Star” ein Lyric-Video ihres kommenden Albums “Non Omnis Moriar” veröffentlicht, welches am 24. Mai 2024 via Rockshots Records erscheinen wird. Der Stilwechsel scheint ALLIGATOAH nicht geschadet zu haben: Mit seinem Rock-Album “Off” landet der Rapper zum dritten Mal in seiner Karriere auf der Pole Position. Neben der Rock-Band GOSSIP (“Real Power”, #8) sieht es in den Top 10 ansonsten abseits der ÄRZTE-Neuveröffentlichung “Geräusch” aber eher mau aus. Metallisch wird es erst auf Rang 16, wo HAMMER KING mit “König und Kaiser” auf Rang 16 eine persönliche Bestmarke feiern. Nach “Kingdemonium” (2022, #17) legt die Heavy / Power Metal-Band nochmals einen Platz zu. Nach oben geht es zudem für LEAVES’ EYES, deren “Myths Of Fate” auf der 17 den Vorgänger “The Last Viking” (2020, #28) locker übertrumpfen kann. Die Death-Grind-Band FULL OF HELL veröffentlicht am 26. April 2024 ihr sechstes Album „Coagulated Bliss“ über Closed Casket Activities. Als zweiten Song gibt es “Gasping Dust” zu hören. Als ersten Song gab es „Doors To Mental Agony“ zu hören, zu dem es auch ein Video gibt.

Sänger Dylan Walker über „Doors To Mental Agony“: „In diesem Leben gibt es viele Türen. Das ländliche Amerika existiert in einem Vakuum mit seinen eigenen alltäglichen Schrecken und Sackgassen. Jeder Mensch, man kennt, stolpert irgendwann durch eine dieser Türen und begeht Fehler, die nicht mehr rückgängig gemacht werden können. Schaut euch die Realität an und weint.“

„Coagulated Bliss“ wurde von Kevin Bernstein aufgenommen und von Taylor Young gemischt. Das Mastering übernahm Nick Townsend. 2023 veröffentlichten FULL OF HELL die Kollaborationen „Suffocating Hallucination“ mit PRIMITIVE MAN und „When No Birds Sang“ mit NOTHING. UNDEROATH haben neben einigen Festival-Auftritten für Juni 2024 auch zwei Headliner-Shows angekündigt. Zwischen den Gigs bei ROCK IM PARK und ROCK AM RING sowie dem GREENFIELD FESTIVAL spielt die Metalcore-Band auch jeweils ein Konzert in Hamburg und Berlin.

EIVØR hat mit “ENN” ein neues Album angekündigt. Das neue Album der Solo-Künstlerin von den Färöer Inseln wird am 14. Juni 2024 via Season of Mist erscheinen. Alle acht Lieder sind auf Färöisch gesungen und die meisten Texte wurden mit dem färöischen Dichter Marjun Syderbø Kjelnæs geschrieben.

“ENN” wurde gemeinsam mit Theodor Kapnas im Studio Bloch aufgenommen und gemixt und von Robin Schmidt gemastert. Vorab gibt es zu “Jardartra” einen Video-Clip.

EIVØR wird im Oktober 2024 zudem gemeinsam mit SYLVAINE durch Europa touren (siehe News).
