Die Heavy Rock-Band SUN & SAIL CLUB hat nach “Halcyon” und “Tumble” mit “District 19” einen dritten Track ihres kommenden Albums “Shipwrecked” veröffentlicht. Es ist nach “Mannequin” (2014) und “The Great White Dope” (2015) das dritte Album der US-Amerikaner rund um Gitarrist Bob Balch (FU MANCHU, BIG SCENIC NOWHERE) und Bassist Scott Reeder (KYUSS, THE OBSESSED, FIREBALL MINISTRY).

“Shipwrecked” wird am 18. Oktober 2024 via Heavy Psych Sounds erscheinen.

Die Death Metal-Band RITUAL FOG hat einen Labeldeal bei Transcending Obscurity Records unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen werden die US-Amerikaner aus Memphis ihr neues Album “But Merely Flesh” veröffentlichen. Der Release-Termin des ersten Albums, das mit einem Cover-Artwork von Juanjo Castellano Rosado ausgestattet wurde, ist der 29. November 2024. Vorab gibt es nach den Songs “Desolate Chasm” und “Demented Procession” nun auch den Track “Nocturnal Suffering” zu hören.

Knock, knock. The most terrifying of all terrifying nights is here, and they are back, ready to make your skin crawl.

But first, rewind exactly one year. Enter the newly restored 1920s cinema at Frogner in Oslo. Frescoed stars, cobweb, myrrh, and pumpkins. On the big screen: John Carpenter’s cult classic Halloween (1978). In the pit: Ulver, performing a reimagined version of the iconic score. A surprising and timely one-off right before the capital city shut down for real.

After the lights were turned off that evening, the All Hallows’ Eve quartet – Ole Alexander Halstensgård, Kristoffer Rygg, Tore Ylwizaker and Stian Westerhus – went full isolation in their studio below the haunted hill, fantasizing about bygone nights of slasher, exploitation, and giallo. Three or four months went by, the band returned to the living, and sent their radiophonic workshop experiments off to the Dogs of Doom, France, where friend and fellow film freak, Carpenter Brut did a razor-sharp mix before taking it to Thibault Chaumont (Deviant Lab) for the master.

Scary Muzak, on one hand a homage to Carpenter’s themes – five out of twelve tracks are covers whereas the rest comes from the outer realms – and on the other zooming out on the aesthetics of the late ’70s and early ’80s popular culture. It is perhaps the Norwegians’ most hauntological moment, whirling up themes and moods, horrors and mysteries hidden in the foggy back alleys of your youth. Imagine the gloomy siblings of Les Humphries, Gert Wilden, and their respective orchestras, armed to their teeth with synths, pads, FX. Sometimes classy and chilling, other times amusingly smooth and sleazy, and at times outright beautiful in its suspense-filled vigour, Scary Muzak is an inspired, goblinesque addition to the ever-expanding Ulver catalogue. Interior films, remember?

It’s Halloween, and everyone’s entitled to one good scare.

Cult-favorite post-punk band And Also the Trees have had a rather productive year thus far. Hot on the heels of the release of their 14th album, Mother-of-pearl Moon. the band has embarked on a European tour, which is currently running through November, with stops in the Netherlands, Germany, and France still on the docket. Meanwhile, Faits-Divers Films is set to release an all-encompassing, career-spanning documentary on the band, due out just in time for the mid-Autumn chill.

The film, titled Slow Pulse Boys, The Story of the Band And Also The Trees, captures the full essence of the band’s 45-year career, from their humble DIY punk beginnings in Inkberrow, a small village in Worcestershire, to their present-day triumphs, with every album and era of the band lovingly represented. The film clocks in at a hefty 2 hours and 36 minutes, and is chock full of interviews with brothers Justin and Simon Huw Jones, formative members Nick Havas and Steven Burrows, and current members Paul Hill, Grant Gordon, and Colin Ozanne. There’s even plenty of screen time with keyboardist/multi-instrumentalists Emer Brizzolara and Mark Tibenham as well as bassist Ian Jenkins, who performed and recorded with the band at various points in the nineties and early aughts, respectively. Other notable guest interviewees include William Faith (The Bellwether Syndicate/Faith & the Muse), producer Matthew Devenish, journalist John Robb, and even a quick moment with Laurence ‘Lol’ Tolhurst, original drummer/keyboardist for The Cure, who also produced And Also the Trees’ incendiary debut LP from 1984.

The film also features a large smattering of powerful live performances that span the band’s entire career, cleverly splicing older raw footage with modern live recordings of the same track. It’s delightfully impressive that the band’s passion and fury remains intact throughout the years, while their studio material has remained as intensely engaging as ever, even as the band has evolved and expanded their sonic palate to include Americana-tinged melodies, jazz-inspired chord progressions, ethereal guitar loops, and spoken word passages. With all of this content in play, Slow Pulse Boys serves as a thorough and balanced telling of the band’s prolific career and a deeply inspiring tale for fans of the band new and old. As an added treat, there will be additional online content available with purchase, which includes over three hours of remastered concert excerpts from 1983-2005 and multi-camera recordings of concerts from 2012-present day.

Dem Verfasser ist keine negative Stimme zum postmodernen Wunderwerk „Black Medium Current“ bekannt, andererseits: Nörgler gibt es immer. Und in der Tat haben sich DØDHEIMSGARD auf ihrem letztjährigen Album, verglichen mit ihren früheren Arbeiten, ziemlich verändert. Kurz gesagt: weniger Weirdness, mehr Emotion. Da in Vicotnik noch immer der Wahnsinn brodelt, entlädt sich dieser nun in Form von „Omniverse Consciousness“, dem Debütalbum des Outlets DOEDSMAGHIRD. Dass Vicotnik mit diesem Anagramm eine Verbindung zu DØDHEIMSGARD schaffen will, ist dabei nur zu logisch und zeigt auf spielerische Art und Weise, dass neu angeordnete Stilmittel ein stimmiges Ganzes ergeben. Wem also „Black Medium Current“ zu nachvollziehbar und brav war, kann seine Herztabletten wieder absetzen.

So ist natürlich schnell klar, dass „Omniverse Consciousness“ für Freunde der konventionelleren Klänge unverdaulich sein dürfte. Und in der Tat, wer den ungebremsten Wahnsinn von „A Umbra Omega“ vermisste, wem die Industrial-Spielereien von „666 International“ oder „Satanic Art“ zuletzt bei DØDHEIMSGARD fehlten, dem sei gesagt: Baby, hier ist alles drin, was deinen Meltdown verursachen kann. Aber halt, nicht so schnell. Denn DOEDSMAGHIRD, bei denen Vicotnik als Sparringspartner Camille Giraudeau an Bord geholt hat, profitieren von der Kunst des klaren Songwritings. Das mag beim ersten Hören noch nicht auffallen, das Duo beschränkt sich trotz der überbordenden Kreativität auf Songlängen bis maximal acht Minuten und packt viel in die Kompositionen, aber eben niemals zu viel.

Die Kunst des klaren Songwritings im Paralleluniversum der ADHS-Weirdness beherrscht Vicotnik auch auf DOEDSMAGHIRDs Debütalbum „Omniverse Consciousness“.
Schon der Opener „Heart Of Hell“ ist ein ausgezeichneter Stellvertreter für das gesamte Album an sich: Neben all der Manie platzieren DOEDSMAGHIRD auch Melancholie und traurige Momente in dem Stück, das zwischen Aggression und Verzweiflung oszilliert. Ein abenteuerlicher Ritt, dessen emotionale Stärke mit jedem weiteren Hören deutlicher wird. Gerade die zweite Hälfte des Albums führt mit dem von ARCTURUS-Chören unterlegten, epischen „Death Of Time“, das auch mal das Gas rausnimmt, mit dem von Flöten unterlegten, hypnotischen „Min Tid Er Omme“ und dem gleichermaßen spacigen wie aggressiven „Adrift Into Collapse“ mit seinen wunderbaren Klaviereinsprengseln dieses Prinzip fort. Ein wahrer Sturm der Emotionen bricht aus, mal bitter, mal befreiend. Doch DOEDSMAGHIRD lassen weitere Facetten zu, die Dissonanzen in „Sparker inn en åpen dør“ mitsamt Sounds, die nach unartigen Filmen klingen (hoffentlich war das kein freudscher Test) oder mit dem elektronisch erweiterten „Endless Distance“, das stilistisch nah an „A Umbra Omega“ ist. Das kurze, aber äußerst brutale „Then, To Darkness Return“ passt schon ins Gesamtkonzept, ist aber letzten Endes etwas bieder.

Und natürlich ist „Omniverse Conciousness“ gespickt mit Querverweisen zu „Black Medium Current“: Die beiden Pianotracks heißen „Endeavor“ (statt „Voyager“) und „Requiem Transiens“ (statt „Requiem Aeternum“) und fühlen sich wie komprimierte Varianten der Stücke auf dem DØDHEIMSGARD-Album an. Auch generell sind die Songs von DOEDSMAGHIRD leichtfüßiger und spitzbübischer geworden. Das ist so augenfällig, dass sich manches Individuum fragen könnte: Hätte „Black Medium Current“ ein Doppelalbum werden können? Gibt es DOEDSMAGHIRD nur, damit DØDHEIMSGARD bei ihrem Acht-Jahres-Rhythmus bleiben können? Das vielleicht nicht, denn es schleichen sich auch externe Einflüsse in die Musik ein: MYSTICUMs drogenvernebelte Weltsicht schimmert ebenso durch wie der kalte Industrial Black Metal von THORNS.

DOEDSMAGHIRD funktionieren perfekt als Antithese zu DØDHEIMSGARD und hebeln mit „Omniverse Consciousness“ die Gesetze von „Black Medium Current“ bisweilen aus.
DØDHEIMSGARD sind seit über 25 Jahren vielleicht die Antithese zum Black Metal made in Norway. Wenn nun deren Mastermind Vicotnik dazu wiederum eine Antithese aufstellt, sind wir dann wieder beim Genrestandard? Selbstverständlich nicht, möchte man aus vollem Herzen brüllen. „Omniverse Consciousness“ ist eine laute, wilde und wundersame Höllenfahrt, die den Black Metal ebenso hinter sich gelassen hat, wie das Mutterschiff. DOEDSMAGHIRD überzeugen mit ihrer spontaneren, wilderen und mindestens ebenso unberechenbaren Herangehensweise wie DØDHEIMSGARD, aber genau daran ist auch festzustellen, dass doch ein kleines, qualitatives Delta zwischen beiden Acts liegt – nur ein kleines, aber immerhin. Dennoch, wo Vicotnik draufsteht, ist auch Vicotnik drin, egal in welchem Paralleluniversum wir uns gerade befinden.

Mit “All the Blood Spilt EP – The Top Floor Live Sessions” wird am 13. Dezember 2024 via Gruesome Records die neue EP der Thrash Metal-Band HOSTILIA erscheinen. Bei der dritten EP der Schweden handelt es sich sich vorrangig um eine Live-Aufnahme-Session aus dem Studio. Diese ergab sich daraus, dass Produzent Jakob Herrmann die Band bei einem Konzert in der Göteborger Bar 2112 sah und derart gefesselt war, dass er ihr eine gratis Aufnahmemöglichkeit in seinen Top Floor Studios anbot.

Berlin’s rave-rock renegades The Tarts unleash their latest video for God Generator, the adrenaline-fueled anthem from their debut SOLID GOLD on Fantasy Fiction Records.

The Tarts (which stands for Telepathic Association for Radical Tranformative Sound) throw down acid-baggy beats, revved-up riffs, and screeching synths with the swagger of a psychedelic street brawl. Their electrified raga rhythms and throttle-pulling grooves feel like the mutant lovechild of Bo Diddley, AC/DC, and The Stooges. Featuring members of Jealous, The Pleasure Majenta, Chicos de Nazca, and Perilymph, this collective delivers their own heady brand of space-age rock ‘n’ roll chaos. Their latest track channels the irreverent energy of Midnite Vultures-era Beck and the party vibe of Happy Mondays, blending funk-laced distortion with a wild-eyed, blown-out vibe that pushes boundaries and sets minds spinning.

Inspired by the surreal aesthetic of the 60s/70s West German music show Beat Club, the clip, directed by Yarden Kum, features the band thrashing in front of a green screen, churning out their signature chaos with gleeful abandon. The visuals mirror the band’s wild live energy, blending absurdity with mayhem. It’s a great dose of silliness in a week full of global chaos.

Die Fun Metal-Band J.B.O. geht auch 2024 wieder auf Tour: Von September 2024 bis Februar 2025 spielt die Formation unter dem Motto “Explizite Lyrik” eine Reihe von Konzerten in Deutschland. Nach dem Auftakt in München sieht sich die Formation allerdings gezwungen, einige der geplante Konzerte aufgrund von Krankheit zu verschieben. Betroffen sind alle Shows im Oktober 2024 sowie die beiden Termine Anfang November, für die ausgefallenen Gigs konnten bereits Nachholtermine im Januar und Februar 2025 gefunden werden.

Robert Smith, never one to shy away from melancholic musings or teasing future plans, has revealed that a second Cure album is nearly complete and, remarkably, a third is already waiting in the wings. With the band poised to release Songs of a Lost World on 1 November (All Souls’ Day)—marking their first offering since 2008’s 4:13 Dream—it seems The Cure is once again diving headfirst into the abyss.

In a rare, sprawling interview with Matt Everitt, filmed at the hallowed Abbey Road Studios, Smith reflects on the band’s creative process. Clocking in at a hefty hour and forty minutes, the interview—available here on the Songs of a Lost World website—sees Smith riffing on everything from the weight of legacy to the haunting sense of time slipping through fingers. As ever, his words hold a peculiar tension between nostalgia and forward motion, a blend of wistful wisdom and raw honesty.

In the interview, Smith delves into the details of creating Songs of a Lost World, a process steeped in reflection and restraint. Lockdown saw him not only penning songs, but finally tackling War and Peace (spoiler, he didn’t care for it). Smith also hints at tracks from a yet-unreleased album that resonate with the melancholic mood of Lost World. In typical fashion, his thoughts meander from the profound to the playful.

“I felt that we should be summing up,” said Smith. “I thought, ‘The 40th anniversary of the band happens in 2018, and the 40th anniversary of the first album was is 2019, so we’ll do something that sums up what the band is and where we got to. It was a grand plan – and grand plans generally don’t work very well, in my experience…It wasn’t really being done for the right reasons. It was a bit ‘triumphal’, I suppose, looking back. The tone of it was wrong. As it turned out, what happened in 2018 was a great way to mark the anniversary of the band. It allowed me the time to think, ‘Why would we make a new album?’

“What happened in 2019 was much more natural, and everything evolved out of that,” he continues. “There was no longer this idea that we were ‘celebrating’ something or marking something – it was becoming something much more artistic to honest, rather than something that was part of this whole idea of, ‘Here’s The Cure after 40 years – be amazed!’”

Fans have noticed that several tracks performed during the Shows of a Lost World tour are absent from the forthcoming album. Smith reassures that the band is still on course for two more albums, with the next one “virtually finished.” Yet, he’s learned to tread carefully, reflecting on his premature album promises in 2019.

Looking ahead, The Cure will hit the road again in the fall of 2025, embarking on a tour that will keep them busy through 2028, culminating with their 50th anniversary. The ever-looming Cure documentary, directed by longtime collaborator Tim Pope, also inches closer to completion.

When discussing the band’s upcoming world tour, the frontman revealed that the aim is to finish another new album that is “virtually finished” before embarking on the road again in 2025.

“We’ll start up again next year,” said Smith. “Seriously, I have to finish the second album. We were going to play festivals next year, but then I decided that we weren’t going to play anything next summer. The next time we go out on stage will be autumn next year.

“But then we’ll probably be playing quite regularly through until the next anniversary – the 2028 anniversary! It’s looming on the horizon. The 2018 one, I started to think about in late 2016, thinking, ‘I’ve got a year and a half, it’s easy!’ And yet I still didn’t manage to get there in time. Now, I’m starting to think, ‘2028, I must get things in order’; so [that’s] the documentary film and things like that.”

In the interview, Smith continues: “I’m 70 in 2029, and that’s the 50th anniversary of the first Cure album. That’s it, that really is it. If I make it that far, that’s it. In the intervening time, I’d like us to include playing concerts as part of the overall plan of what we’re going to do. I’ve loved it; the last 10 years of playing shows have been the best 10 years of being in the band. It pisses all over the other 30 years! It’s been great.

“Not having a new album for all that period of time, we’ve played 130 or 150 different songs because we’ve turned into a live band that draws on the catalogue. We can go out and play shows, and we can play two hours of 30 songs and completely different songs each night. There’s a freedom to that.”

During the interview, Smith also elaborated on the band’s stance on concert ticket pricing.

‘If people save on the tickets, they buy beer or merch,” says Smith. “There is goodwill, they will come back next time. It is a self-fulfilling good vibe and I don’t understand why more people don’t do it. It was easy to set ticket prices, but you need to be pig-headed. We didn’t allow dynamic pricing because it’s a scam that would disappear if every artist said, ‘I don’t want that!’ But most artists hide behind management. “Oh, we didn’t know,” they say. They all know. If they say they do not, they’re either fucking stupid or lying. It’s just driven by greed.”

Es ist nach “Vanished Cadavers” (2020) und “Engrossed in Decay” (2022) das dritte Album der US-Amerikaner aus Illinois und wird am 8. November 2024 via Prosthetic Records erscheinen.

“Catastrophic Reconfiguration” wurde mit einem Cover-Artwork von Julian Felipe Mora Ibañez ausgestattet. Die Aufnahme erfolgte gemeinsam mit Matthew Aguilar, während Greg Wilkinson (AUTOPSY) für Mix und Mastering verantwortlich zeichnete.

“Greg (Wilkinson) war unglaublich professionell und es war eine Freude, mit ihm zu arbeiten. Es war unglaublich, mit jemandem zu arbeiten, der so renommiert ist und so gut versteht, was wir erreichen wollen”, sagt Sänger und Gitarrist Aaren Pantke.

Die Progressive Metal-Band VIRTUAL SYMMETRY veröffentlicht am 6. Dezember 2024 ihr viertes Album “Veils Of Illumination” mit einer etwas anderen Veröffentlichungsstrategie: “Veils Of Illumination”  erscheint zunächst nur als CD. Das Album wird nicht als Digitalrelease veröffentlicht, die Band teilt aber bis Mai 2025 jeden Monat einen der neuen Songs. Einen darauf gibt es mit “Canvas Of Souls” nun als Clip bei YouTube.

Mix und Mastering kommen von Simone Mularoni.

Ab November sind VIRTUAL SYMMETRY auf Tour im Vorprogramm von EVERGREY zu sehen.

Die Death Metal-Band NECROFERUM hat mit “Visions from the Necrorealm” eine neue EP angekündigt. Es ist der erste Release der Band aus Costa Rica und wird am 4. November 2024 via Nuclear Winter Records erscheinen. Vorab gibt es den Track “Malignant Echoes of Non-Existence” zu hören.
