Aus dem isländischen Schneegestöber fräst sich eine neue musikalische Gestalt heraus, und scheinbar hatte sich diese Wesenheit ziemlich lange verlaufen. „Í vökulli áþján“, das Debütalbum von VAFURLOGI, ist sechs Jahre nachdem Þórir Garðarsson (SINMARA, ex-SVARTIDAUÐI) die Band gegründet hat, bereit, die Szene zu bereichern. Zunächst als Ein-Mann-Projekt gestartet, schließlich mit Drummer Ragnar Sverisson tauglich für die Aufnahmen gemacht und nun mit Bassist Samúel Ásgeirsson und Gitarrist Eysteinn Orri Sigurðsson zu einer vollen Band erweitert, rüsten sich VAFURLOGI für den Erstschlag. Und tatsächlich bringen sie stellenweise frischen Wind in die isländische Black Metal-Szene, nur leider nicht im vollen Umfang.

VAFURLOGI positionieren sich zwischen den Polen der isländischen Black Metal-Szene: „Í vökulli áþján“ wirkt frisch, aber auch unentschlossen.
Es ist für die Positionierung der jungen Band von Vorteil, dass VAFURLOGI in keine der Black Metal-Strömungen hundertprozentig hineinpassen. Einerseits ist da viel Chaos und Dissonanz, was durch den gekonnt verwaschenen Sound aus dem Studio Emissary unwirklich und bizarr klingt, dann gehen sie wieder den gegensätzlichen Weg – „Í vökulli áþján“ verströmt so ein ganz eigenes Flair. Schade nur, dass VAFURLOGI über längere Strecken recht beliebig klingen. Der konfuse, achtminütige Opener „Reikul Vofa“ gibt als ersten Eindruck nicht das beste Bild ab und auch der straighte Black ´n´ Roll-Song „Helgrindur“ ist eher belanglos, ebenso das schroffe „Hvíldarsálmur“, aller Wildheit zum Trotz. Daneben haben VAFURLOGI Songs wie „Viðjar Holdsins“ stehen, die mit heroischen Riffs voller BATHORY-Pathos bestens geeignet sind, die Fäuste in die Luft zu recken, und zeigen sich dort auch abseits von Originalität von einer besseren Seite.

Es ist also nicht überraschend, dass VAFURLOGI auch verflucht melodiös sein können – genau hier erzeugt „Í vökulli áþján“ echte Gänsehautmomente. „Dreyrrauði“ und „Úr Iðramyrkri“ verbinden Pathos mit eingängigen Harmonien im rohen Soundbrei und werden so beinahe surreal magisch. Und schließlich zeigt das von dissonanten Tremoloriffs angeführte „Iðrun Og Ótti“, dass VAFURLOGI auch ein Händchen für straighte Brutalität haben, wenn sie sich auf das Wesentliche beschränken. Dass „Í vökulli áþján“ mit dem fiebrigen, zwischen Epos und Thanatos oszillierendem „Duftið Eitt“ mitreißend endet und somit die zweite, starke Hälfte des Albums den schwächeren Start ausmerzt, versöhnt am Ende.

„Í vökulli áþján“ glänzt nach einem durchwachsenen Start mit einer starken zweiten Hälfte: VAFURLOGI finden ihre Form etwas zu spät.
Und doch wäre mehr drin gewesen. Dass VAFURLOGI sich für „Í vökulli áþján“ so lange Zeit gelassen haben, tat dem Material nicht unbedingt immer gut. Das damalige Duo verliert im Laufe der Dreiviertelstunde immer wieder den Fokus und überzeugt gerade in den chaotischen Momenten nur selten. Den Vorteil, dass VAFURLOGI nicht in eine bestimmte Black Metal-Strömung passen, können sie somit leider nicht ganz ausspielen. Dass in den Isländern aber eine Menge Potenzial steckt, beweisen sie im Laufe der acht Songs zu genüge, auch wenn sie nicht DER neue dunkle Stern am Szenehimmel sein mögen, der aus der schicken Gaswolke des Covers entsteht.

Die finnische Progressive / Alternative Metal-Formation ROYAL SORROW hat einen Vertrag mit InsideOut Music abgeschlossen. Mit dem neuen Label im Rücken war es auch Zeit, die komplette Band umzukrempeln:

Cruel World Festival is set to return to Pasadena on May 17, 2025, transforming the historic Brookside at the Rose Bowl into a gathering of post-punk and new-wave royalty. Topping the lineup are Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds and New Order, two iconic acts that have defined alternative music for decades. This one-day festival from Goldenvoice promises to deliver once again a carefully curated collection of dark anthems, emotional gravitas, and danceable dystopia.

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds take the stage in the final leg of their North American tour, supporting their highly anticipated eighteenth studio album, Wild God. Known for their brooding intensity and poetic lyricism, Cave and his band continue to push the boundaries of rock, blending haunting narratives with an atmospheric sound that remains singular in its emotional depth. Their Cruel World set marks the final stop of this tour, offering fans a cathartic culmination of their journey through Wild God‘s dark and stirring landscapes.

New Order, too, promises a headlining set of synth-driven grandeur. The band, now featuring Bernard Sumner and other original members, continues to enchant audiences with their fusion of electronic beats and post-punk melancholia. Though Peter Hook is not part of the lineup, their live performances still carry the weight of a band whose influence can be felt across generations of alternative music.

Joining these headliners is a stellar collection of acts spanning eras of new wave, post-punk, darkwave, and alternative rock. Fresh off their performance at California’s Ohana Festival, Garbage will take the stage with renewed energy. Shirley Manson, who attended Cruel World in 2023 as a fan to witness Siouxsie’s only North American performance, returns with her bandmates Duke Erikson, Steve Marker, and Butch Vig. With their eighth studio album set for a 2025 release, Garbage is primed to deliver a set that brims with electronic tension, grungy guitar riffs, and Manson’s searing vocals.

A significant reunion takes place with Til Tuesday, led by Aimee Mann, performing together for the first time in 35 years. This original lineup promises to revisit the shimmering sounds that made them an indelible part of the ’80s musical landscape, with “Voices Carry” sure to send waves of nostalgia through the crowd. Mann, whose solo career has garnered critical acclaim, returns to her roots for this rare reunion, a highlight for longtime fans of the band.

The Go-Gos, icons of punk-pop rebellion, will also reunite for the festival, marking their first live show since disbanding in 2022. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021, the Go-Gos helped carve a path for women in rock, blending catchy melodies with a DIY ethos. Their hits like “We Got the Beat” and “Our Lips Are Sealed” remain timeless, and their return to the stage promises an infectious energy that will have the crowd dancing in the sun.

Perhaps one of the festival’s most anticipated performances comes from Death Cult. Before they morphed into The Cult and achieved mainstream success, Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy’s early project was a dark and primal force in the post-punk scene. At Cruel World, Death Cult will resurrect their gothic roots for what promises to be their only California show of the year, delivering tracks like “Gods Zoo” with all the mystique and raw energy that defined their early years. Elsewhere on the bill, British stalwarts Madness and Buzzcocks bring their rebellious anthems to the mix, ensuring that the festival retains its edge with a dose of irreverent, ska and high-energy punk. The San Fernando Valley’s darkwave duo She Wants Revenge, known for their moody, post-punk revival sound, will make Cruel World their only stop of 2025, adding another layer of dark romance to the festival’s lineup.

Last year’s edition of Cruel World saw the likes of Duran Duran, Blondie, and The Jesus and Mary Chain dominate the stages, setting a high bar for this year’s iteration. But with a lineup that balances legendary acts with rare reunions and darkwave stalwarts, the 2025 festival promises to leave its own mark on the sonic landscape.

ENSIFERUM stellen mit einem Video zu “Fatherland”  die dritte Single ihres neuen Albums vor. Die neunte Platte der finnischen Folk-Metal-Band trägt den Titel “Winter Storm” und wurde am 18. Oktober 2024 via Metal Blade Records veröffentlicht.

Den ersten Höreindruck gab es im Juni mit einem  Video zu “Winter Storm Vigilantes”, im September folgte ein Lyric-Video zu “Long Cold Winter Of Sorrow And Strife”.

Sami Hinkka, Sänger und Bassist von ENSIFERUM, hat für das Album Teile seines Fantasy-Romans als Vorlage genommen:

“Ich denke, ‘Winter Storm’ eher eine Art ‘Musical’ als ein traditionelles Album: Die Texte basieren auf einem Teil meines unveröffentlichten Fantasy-Buches. Eines Tages wird es erscheinen…  Ich möchte nicht zu viel über die Handlung oder Details verraten, aber ‘Winter Storm Vigilantes’ und ‘Fatherland’ erzählen von zwei Parteien dieser Fantasy-Geschichte, den Vigilanten und einem kleinen Stamm im Norden. Die Vigilanten sind in der Lage, ein bestimmtes seltenes Elemente zu nutzen, und obwohl es in ihrer Welt bereits Magie gab, haben sie mit diesem Wissen eine völlig neue Ebene erreicht. Dieses Element scheint auf eine Weise mit lebenden Dingen zu interagieren, die selbst die weisesten Menschen nicht vollständig verstehen. Über Generationen haben sie es geschafft, mit Hilfe des Elements das Gesetz der Schwerkraft zu brechen und ihre Pferde fliegen zu lassen. Aber sie wurden rücksichtslos, gierig und wollten immer mehr von diesem Element. Ein kleiner Stamm im Norden kämpft weiter um sein Land, das die Vigilanten erobern wollen. Und diese Leute aus dem Norden werden buchstäblich bis zum letzten Mann kämpfen…

Weitere Figuren sind ein Ausgestoßener der Vigilanten, der letzte Schamane des Nordvolkes und eine geheimnisvolle Witwe. Das Album endet mit einer großen Schlacht gegen die Vigilanten und einer unheiligen Allianz zwischen dem Ausgestoßenen und dem Schamanen, der sich in einen Wolfsgeist verwandelt. Wer wird sich durchsetzen? Aber wird dies auch wirklich die letzte Schlacht sein? Das alles klingt vielleicht sehr weit hergeholt – nun, es ist ein Fantasy-Buch. Aber es ist auch eine wahrhaft epische Geschichte!”

Janne Joutsenniemi hat “Winter Storm” produziert, der Mix kommt von Jens Bogren. Als Gastmusiker waren Lassi Logrén mit Nyckelharpa und Violine an dem Album beteiligt, Mikko Mustonen sorgte für die Orchesterparts, ELEINE-Sängerin Madeleine Liljestam steuerte Gesang zum Song “Scars In My Heart” bei.

Fortunately, the 500-meter restricted zone in which we live is located in southern Thuringia of the German Democratic Republic and not in the proverbial “Valley of the Clueless”. We are only allowed to enter our hometown after an ID check by the border soldiers who guard the barrier at the entrance to the village. If friends or family want to visit us, they need a permit. But hey, we are able to watch “West TV”! So, here we are sitting in front of the TV, watching the “ZDF Hit Parade”.

This autumn, The Waning Moon and The Black Capes are set to take their dark, driving sounds across Europe, with a tour beginning on October 24th in Athens, Greece. With stops planned in Italy, the UK, Germany, and Spain, these two gothic rock outfits will bring their distinctive mix of heavy rhythms and shadowy melodies to the forefront. Joined by a few special guests, this journey through Europe promises a series of unforgettable performances. The bands will be joined on select dates by Cold Remembrance, Veda Wave, Tears Of Fire, and TWO WITCHES.

The Black Capes, a five-piece gothic rock band from Athens, Greece, have carved their name into the shadows of the genre with a forceful presence. Since 2017, they’ve unleashed three full-length albums: All These Monsters (2017), Lullabies for the Dead (2020) under Germany’s darkTunes label, and Looks Like Death (2022), released via Ikaros Records in Europe and The Council of Bones in the U.S. Each record pushes deeper into their dark, pulsing heart, steeped in the rich tradition of gothic rock yet laced with their own intensity.

Touring across Europe, they’ve shared stages with giants like Perturbator, Theatre of Hate, The Faces of Sarah, and Paradise Lost. Their live shows, however, are where they truly cast their spell, drenching audiences in an atmosphere thick with pounding rhythms and spectral energy. CITIZEND ist der Name des neuen Projekts von Gitarrist Emil Gustavsson (ex-OROCHEN) und Multi-Instrumentalist sowie Produzent Otto Nilsson. Gemeinsam plant das Duo die Veröffentlichung iher Debüt-EP “The Spiral” via Majestic Mountain Records. Darauf enthalten sind fünf Stücke, eines davon steht mit “End Of The World” vorab als Musivkideo bereit. Nun legte der Musiker nochmals nach: “Grinding Bones” ist ebenfalls als Clip abrufbereit.

Bereits im April teilten CITIZEND den Cover-Song “Bad Moon Rising” (CREDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL) als Lyric-Video bei YouTube – auf der EP findet man die Nummer jedoch nicht. Die Wahl des Stücks kommentiert Emil Gustavsson:

“Dieser Song hat seit meiner Kindheit einen besonderen Platz in meinem Herzen, und sein Text wirkt heute mehr denn je nach. Es war das Lied, mit dem unsere Reise begann, sowohl was den Kontext als auch was das Konzept angeht.”

Musikalisch sollen sich die fünf Songs der EP zwischen Americana, Post Rock und Post Metal bewegen.

1996 gründete sich eine Band unter dem Namen ADVOCATUS DIABOLI und überzeugte mit einer düsteren Melange aus Synth Wave und Goth Rock. Nach einer langen kreativen Pause, von fast zwei Jahrzehnten, kehren die Anwälte des Teufels mit neuer Energie, neuem Namen und einem gelungenen Album zurück. Dieses neue Werk erscheint ohne Label im Hintergrund.

Grandios und mit bedrückender Eleganz lässt man zu Beginn die Zukunft mit der Vergangenheit verschmelzen. Ein energiegeladenes Stück bleibt „Schrei / Enter your Forest 24“ allemal. „Glashaus“ ist ein treibender Düstersong, der geschickt zwischen Atmosphäre und Tanzbarkeit sein Pendel zur Freiheit einklagt. Eine pragmatische, dennoch durchdringende Hookline trifft auch erzählerische Passagen. „Eiszeit“ ist etwas straighter arrangiert und lässt die Gitarren in den Vordergrund rücken. „Alles“ kolportiert den Dadaismus mit kleinen Reminiszenzen an DAF. Das folgende „Fünf“ paraphrasiert über das „Ministerium der Wahrheit“, verwirrend und interessant sind hier die unterschiedlichen Stimmen. Ein politisch heißes Eisen wird hier angepackt und könnte durchaus dafür sorgen, dass die Anwälte Gottes aus „falscher Richtung“ Beifall bekommen. Das wird mit dem folgenden „Welt 2.0“ nicht kühler. Musikalisch erinnert man an die Sisters Anfang der 80er und beschäftigt sich dann mit Transhumanismus – oder extrem ausgedrückt, dem Kampf zwischen Mensch und Maschine. „Mangrovenkanal“ hat in seiner Erzählweise etwas vom „Wasserturm“ der Neubauten“. Getragen und fast sakral fährt der Song in ruhigen Gewässern. Sanftmütige Schwere ist der bestimmende Untergrund. Darüber thront die Stimme von Thomas, der aus einem Buch zu rezitieren scheint. Die Musik scheint sich hier und dort ein wenig Bombast anzueignen, was dem Gesamtkonstrukt zum Ende hin eine gewisse Energie verleiht, während es textlich eher ums „Wegschauen“ geht.

Fazit: ADVOCATUS DEI spielen auf dem erstem Ohr einen traditionellen Dark Wave mit reichlich Einflüssen aus den 90ern. Im Nebenohr wird aber mit jedem Song eine deutliche Gesellschaftskritik erkennbarer. Musikalisch ist es der typische Synth-Wave, den die Band / Das Duo bereits zu Beginn spielte, dezent gestreut sind neue Facetten des Post Punks oder aufgehübschte Variationen des Düsterpops der 80er und ganz versteckt blickt ein wenig eine Melange aus Das Ich und EA 80 um die Ecke. Die Dark Progressive Metal-Band THE OLD DEAD TREE hat mit “Second Thoughts” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist das vierte Album der Franzosen, deren letzte Full-length-Veröffentlichtung schon über 15 Jahre zurückliegt.

“Second Thoughts”, das am 6. Dezember 2024 via Season of Mist erscheinen wird, wurde von HK (u.a. für LOUDBLAST tätig) im Vamacara Studio gemixt und gemastert und mit einem Cover-Artwork von Henri Lejeune (u.a. für ARKAN tätig) ausgestattet.

Vorab gibt es zu “Solastalgia” sowie zum Opener “Unpredictable” einen Video-Clip. Der Song taucht ein in den chaotischen Strudel der Wendungen des Lebens.

This autumn,  The Black Capes and The Waning Moon are set to take their dark, driving sounds across Europe, with a tour beginning on October 24th in Athens, Greece. With stops planned in Italy, the UK, Germany, and Spain, these two gothic rock outfits will bring their distinctive mix of heavy rhythms and shadowy melodies to the forefront. Joined by a few special guests, this journey through Europe promises a series of unforgettable performances. The bands will be joined on select dates by Cold Remembrance, Veda Wave, Tears Of Fire, and TWO WITCHES.

The Black Capes, a five-piece gothic rock band from Athens, Greece, have carved their name into the shadows of the genre with a forceful presence. Since 2017, they’ve unleashed three full-length albums: All These Monsters (2017), Lullabies for the Dead (2020) under Germany’s darkTunes label, and Looks Like Death (2022), released via Ikaros Records in Europe and The Council of Bones in the U.S. Each record pushes deeper into their dark, pulsing heart, steeped in the rich tradition of gothic rock yet laced with their own intensity.

Touring across Europe, they’ve shared stages with giants like Perturbator, Theatre of Hate, The Faces of Sarah, and Paradise Lost. Their live shows, however, are where they truly cast their spell, drenching audiences in an atmosphere thick with pounding rhythms and spectral energy. Es ist ein so simples Wort, das dennoch Trost zu spenden vermag. Ob nun tatsächlich Blutsbande gemeint sind oder eine spirituelle Verbindung den Ausschlag gibt – wir wissen, dass wir nicht alleine sind. „Kinship“ (dt. Verwandtschaft) orientiert sich in dieser Hinsicht in eine gegensätzliche Richtung, als es noch auf dem Debüt der Fall war. Wo „Access All Worlds“ (2021) zu allumfassender Dimension anwachsen wollte, erzählen IOTUNN ihre Konzeptgeschichte nun in prähistorischer Zeit. Einheit und Zwietracht, die menschliche Natur, und nicht zuletzt die Frage nach unserer Identität – all das findet Gehör in diesen 68 Minuten, die selbst gar nicht überbordend auftreten wollen und doch monumentale Größe erlangen.

Dabei beginnt „Kinship Elegiac“ mit einem zögerlichen Jón Aldará (HAMFERÐ) zunächst vergleichsweise in sich gekehrt. Behutsam tastet sich der Sänger an der Seite der tänzelnden Gitarren nach vorne, bis das einsetzende Schlagzeug die plötzliche auftretende Entschlossenheit in der Singstimme untermauert.

Das variable Songwriting hebt IOTUNN auf die nächste Stufe
Was früh auffällt, ist das ungemein variable Songwriting, das IOTUNN in vielerlei Hinsicht auf das nächste Level hievt. War Aldará auf dem Debüt oftmals noch der Fixpunkt der teils ausladenden Kompositionen, öffnet sich das 14-minütige Auftaktopus schnell einer Vielzahl von Einflüssen. Blastbeats, angeschwärzte Riffs, elegante Bassläufe und organisch miteinander verwobene Gitarrenspuren breiten eine Klangkulisse aus, in der wir uns tagelang verlieren könnten.

Glücklicherweise zeigt uns Aldarás charakteristische wie kraftvolle Stimme letztlich den Weg vorwärts, nimmt uns mittels tiefer Growls und kratzenden Screams mit durch steiniges Gelände, um uns alsbald wieder weich zu betten. Wie gut das Songwriting auf „Kinship“ tatsächlich ist, belegt das folgende „Mistland“, welches als Single bereits fast 16 Monate zuvor veröffentlicht wurde und nun im Gesamtwerk mit neuem Mix immer noch so frisch und erhaben klingt wie am ersten Tag.

IOTUNN verlieren auf “Kinship” das Wesentliche nicht aus den Augen
Beeindruckend ist zudem das Kunststück IOTUNNs, bei aller Komplexität den Sinn fürs Wesentliche nicht aus den Augen zu verlieren. Dadurch gestaltet sich der Einstieg in das kolossale Zweitwerk sanfter als erwartet: Das Ziel am Horizont versteckt das Quintett nicht hinter zahllosen Wendungen; es setzt auf die Weitläufigkeit seiner Stücke, die auf diese Weise den Tiefgang nicht für mehr Zugänglichkeit opfern müssen. Zu beobachten ist das besonders gut im recht geradlinig lospreschenden „Twilight“, wo sich Black-Metal-Einsprengsel der klaren Melodieführung entgegenstellen, während Drummer Bjørn Wind Andersen dem Song seine unbändige Energie schenkt.

Überdrüssig werden wir der Herangehensweise IOTUNNs trotz der überlangen Spielzeit nicht. Dafür sorgt ein Ruhepol wie das akustische „Iridescent Way“, dessen melancholische Lagerfeuer-Stimmung durch die jähzornige Black-Metal-Eruption von „Earth To Sky“ unterbrochen wird und so nochmals Schwung für die Schlussstrecke sammelt. Fast schon in konsequenter Weise knackt „The Anguished Ethereal“ als Finalkapitel die Zehnminutenmarke, während uns übergroße Gesangslinien und ein wunderbar getragenes Riff ans Ende dieser Reise geleiten.

IOTUNN erschaffen mit “Kinship” ein gewaltiges Werk
„Kinship“ mag ein so simples Wort sein. Aus der Feder IOTUNNs jedoch entsprießt ihm eine gewaltige Welt, in der wir uns plötzlich ganz klein fühlen. Ans Verzagen denken müssen wir dennoch zu keiner Sekunde: Schließlich geben uns die Dänen erst mit dem prägnanten Titel und dann in Form ihrer führenden Erzählstruktur zu verstehen, dass wir in diesem einmaligen Kosmos nicht alleine sind.

Yearning for human connection is a hunger as primal as it is painful, a desperate need to feel seen, understood, and mirrored in the eyes of another. Yet, when one feels like a monster—an outsider, burdened by an identity too strange or scarred—it becomes a weight too heavy to bear. The crushing doubt settles in, whispering that no one could possibly share the same fears, the same dark corners of the soul. There’s an ache that gnaws, the relentless question—am I truly alone? In that silence, it feels as though the world itself recoils. But it’s not the lack of connection that crushes; it’s the belief that perhaps there was never a chance at all. That fear, that monstrous self-perception, casts shadows over every fleeting attempt at closeness, deepening the isolation. The heart longs, but the mind builds walls, haunted by the thought that no one else could ever understand.

Contact, the lead single from Vases’ EP Pure Heat, delivers this theme with a cool, darkwave pulse, a moody reflection steeped in longing and isolation. Its sharp, electronic beats recall the slick precision of Heaven 17 and Blancmange, while the shimmering, shadowed undertones nod toward Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys. It’s a track wrapped in icy detachment, yet threaded with a sense of yearning.

The video, directed by James Messina and Ty Baron, takes inspiration from the eerie, flickering gloom of early Hollywood monster movies, blending it with the hard, anti-corporate cynicism of ’90s neo-noir. Under the cryptic moniker Vases, Los Angeles-based multi-disciplinary artist Ty Baron creates music that merges post-punk’s brooding intensity with the meticulous detail of fine art. His latest EP, crafted with the help of engineer Jake Supple (Cherry Glazerr, Girlpool, Blondeshell), is a carefully sculpted blend of darkwave, industrial, and shoegaze, showcasing Baron’s reverence for these genres as serious artistic forms. Die Progressive Death Metal / Deathcore-Band HETEROMORPHIC ZOO hat mit “Ritual of Fidelity” einen weiteren Video-Clip ihrer neuen EP “New World” veröffentlicht. Zuvor sind bereits Video-Clips zu “Avatara” und “Napalm” erschienen.

“Ritual of Fidelity” ist der erste Release der Kanadier und erzählt die Geschichte einer großen Allianz monströser Wesen, die in ein neues Reich eindringen, wobei die Perspektive zwischen den Monstern, ihrem Oberherrn und ihren Feinden wechselt.

Produziert wurde die Scheibe, welche am 10. Okotber 2024 erschienen ist, von Chris Wiseman (SHADOW OF INTENT, CURRENTS). Gemixt und gemastert wurde die von Christian Donaldson (CRYPTOPSY).

Knock, knock. The most terrifying of all terrifying nights is here, and they are back, ready to make your skin crawl.

But first, rewind exactly one year. Enter the newly restored 1920s cinema at Frogner in Oslo. Frescoed stars, cobweb, myrrh, and pumpkins. On the big screen: John Carpenter’s cult classic Halloween (1978). In the pit: Ulver, performing a reimagined version of the iconic score. A surprising and timely one-off right before the capital city shut down for real.

After the lights were turned off that evening, the All Hallows’ Eve quartet – Ole Alexander Halstensgård, Kristoffer Rygg, Tore Ylwizaker and Stian Westerhus – went full isolation in their studio below the haunted hill, fantasizing about bygone nights of slasher, exploitation, and giallo. Three or four months went by, the band returned to the living, and sent their radiophonic workshop experiments off to the Dogs of Doom, France, where friend and fellow film freak, Carpenter Brut did a razor-sharp mix before taking it to Thibault Chaumont (Deviant Lab) for the master.

Scary Muzak, on one hand a homage to Carpenter’s themes – five out of twelve tracks are covers whereas the rest comes from the outer realms – and on the other zooming out on the aesthetics of the late ’70s and early ’80s popular culture. It is perhaps the Norwegians’ most hauntological moment, whirling up themes and moods, horrors and mysteries hidden in the foggy back alleys of your youth. Imagine the gloomy siblings of Les Humphries, Gert Wilden, and their respective orchestras, armed to their teeth with synths, pads, FX. Sometimes classy and chilling, other times amusingly smooth and sleazy, and at times outright beautiful in its suspense-filled vigour, Scary Muzak is an inspired, goblinesque addition to the ever-expanding Ulver catalogue. Interior films, remember?

It’s Halloween, and everyone’s entitled to one good scare.

Athens, Georgia’s post-punk powerhouse, Vision Video, steps boldly into the fray with their third album, Modern Horror. An 11-track plunge into the grotesque and brutal realities of today’s world, the album doesn’t shy away from the visceral truths. Each song tears at the seams of a modern society plagued by atrocities, reflecting the raw underbelly of human experience.

Vision Video has conjured up something fierce with this banger of an album—sharp, relentless, and unflinching, holding a mirror to the horrors that creep through modern life. The band (Dusty Gannon, Emily Fredock, and Ryan Houchens) creates intense and uncompromising goth rock with a message. Injecting malaise into classic post-punk and new wave, this is refreshingly modern while paying homage to artists like the Chameleons, Killing Joke, The Cult, and The Cure.

Earlier releases like Stay and In My Side (Modern Horror Version) hinted at the fire within, but Dead Gods truly ignites the flaming heart of the album. A fierce critique, Dead Gods rips into those who twist ideology and dogma into instruments of oppression and violence. With a cutting edge, the song is a howl against authoritarianism, a battle cry for those suffocating under the weight of blind faith and tyranny.

Modern Horror plunges deeper and bites harder than Vision Video’s earlier work, drawing from frontman Dusty Gannon’s raw, personal experiences as an anti-war Afghanistan veteran and a former firefighter-paramedic. This album is a searing indictment of the systemic breakdowns in society, the relentless brutality, and the sense of hopelessness gnawing at the edges of our world. With each track, the record exposes the very real horrors many face daily, a blunt warning against the path of war and violence.

Gannon channels his own disillusionment, his frustration, and the scars left by war, shining a harsh light on how power, violence, and disenfranchisement intertwine. Each note, each lyric pulls no punches, stripping away pretense and sentimentality, leaving only the raw nerves of a world pushed to its breaking point. Modern Horror is acidic, and it burns with purpose.

“I’ve been through some really unimaginably awful experiences and they will live with me for the rest of my days,” says Gannon. “I went through a time in my life where I tried to compartmentalize those memories and push them into a place in my mind where I thought they would remain buried, but I found that to be futile and it always came back to the surface with more vigour and ill-affect.  I now understand that we have to bring these awful things into the light, and examine them head-on, which is essentially the point of the entire album…Writing Modern Horror has been an outlet for my reflections and frustrations of the current state of America and the world at large. I see a lot of regression happening in the world, and it is so disheartening to me. Having been through a war personally, then being a paramedic-firefighter during the pandemic, I started to see these shifting and cracking fault-lines in the way that everything worked. I think we’re watching the failure of untenable systems, like unbridled capitalism, colonialism and religious fundamentalism. Instead of allowing them to die off, the powers-that-be are doubling down and it is causing a lot of unnecessary atrocities and hardship to occur.”

Dusty Gannon, a longtime fan of horror films, views them as a kind of twisted mirror reflecting societal issues, allowing for deeper analysis of human fears and flaws. With Modern Horror, he sought to create a similar reflection, using dark imagery and metaphor throughout the record. The title is also a clever nod to one of Gannon’s favorite songs, Modern Love by David Bowie. He draws a parallel between “horror” as an inversion of “love”—two forces deeply intertwined, yet opposed. Throughout the album, there are subtle lyrical nods to Bowie, showcasing Gannon’s admiration for the legendary artist while exploring darker, more unsettling themes.

“There’s an axiom of horror films that I think is relevant here: If you show the monster too much in a horror film, it becomes less scary,” he says. “The special effects makeup or the mask of the monster slips and shows the superficiality of it, and you understand that it has no actual power over you. I hope this record does that for people to these seemingly insurmountable problems like war and genocide. We can do something about these things, but it requires understanding and unflinching examination. We have to overcome the fear and challenge these things directly.”

On October 22, Modern Horror will be released on vinyl and everywhere digitally.

Stepping into new territory, Vision Video teamed up with renowned producer Ben Allen (Erasure, Animal Collective, Deerhunter) to shape this record’s distinct sound. Allen’s deft touch can be heard throughout, recorded and mixed at Maze Studios in Atlanta, with Frank Arkwright (The Smiths, New Order, Joy Division) mastering the final product at the legendary Abbey Road Studios. The album’s cover, a striking visual by Ryan Dunn, further underscores the boldness of this release.

In other news, Vision Video has earned the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards Editor’s Eyeball Award for 2024, and will join the lineup of the Sick New World Festival in Las Vegas.

Die Avantgarde / Progressive Metal-Band THY CATAFALQUE hat mit dem Clip “Piros kocsi, fekete éj” eine dritte Single ihres kommenden Albums “XII: A gyönyörű álmok ezután jönnek” veröffentlicht. Es ist das zwölfte Album des seit über 25 Jahren laufenden Projekts von Tamás Kátai, an dem viele bisherige Wegbegleiter mitwirkten. Denn das Album knüpft auch an Kátais Vergangenheit und die Geschichte seines Heimatlandes an.

“XII: A gyönyörű álmok ezután jönnek” wurde von Gábor Vári bei Miracle Sound in Szeged gemixt und gemastert. Release-Termin ist der 15. November 2024 via Season of Mist. Vorab gibt es auch ein Video zu “Mindenevő” sowie einen Video-Clip zum Titeltrack, in welchem Kátai sebst durch die Straßen seiner Heimatstadt Makó läuft. Während sich der Weg durch die ruhige Landschaft schlängelt, wird er von seltsamen Szenen aus Vergangenheit und Gegenwart begrüßt: verrostete Eisenbahnwaggons, Schlägereien mit bloßen Fäusten, mysteriöse Pakete, die im Wald deponiert werden, eine rothaarige Frau, die stoisch auf einem Feld singt. An einer Stelle wird er durch den Anblick seines Doppelgängers, der sein eigenes Grab aushebt, gestoppt.

“Ich stelle mir diese Lieder als Führer durch eine dunkle Nacht der Seele vor”, sagt Tamás Kátai. “Das Video ist sehr persönlich. Es wurde an Orten aus meiner Vergangenheit gedreht und fast alle Schauspieler sind meine alten Freunde.”
