Das WISDOM TOOTH FESTIVAL geht 2024 in eine neue Runde: Gefeiert wird am 12. und 13. Juli 2023 am “Wildbachstadion” Hochstein in 86657 Bissingen. Tickets gibt es ab sofort zum Preis von 82,-€ über den offiziellen Festival-Shop im Vorverkauf. Tagestickets schlagen mit je 55,-€ zu Buche.

Eine Neuerung im Vergleich zum Vorjahr ist das ausgeweitete Programm der “Babytooth-Stage” (ehemals Biergartenstage). Hier werden 2024 in den Umbaupausen nun insgesamt sieben verschiedene Acts auftreten. Angekündigt sind OVERNOIZE, OVERCLOCK, RECEIVING ECHOES, TALES OF TOMORROW, INHALED SCREAMS, WITCHES & DREAMS sowie YELLOWCAKES.

Außerdem hat der veranstaltende “Tooth Fairy”-Verein für den Vortag eine Warm-up-Party angekündigt: Gefeiert wird am 11. Juli 2024 von 20:00 Uhr bis 00:00Uhr auf dem Festivalgelände. Der Eintritt ist frei und während der Happy Hour (20:00-22:00 Uhr) kostet das Bier lediglich 2,-€. Neben Musik wird zum Zeitvertreib auch Bierpong angeboten.

Im Februar veranstalteten die Organisatoren einen Bandcontest für lokale Künstler:innen; Preis war ein Eröffnungsslot auf der Mainstage des Festivals. Letztendlich für sich entscheiden konnten diesen Wettbewerb INTERSTELLAR DUST, die nun auf dem WISDOM TOOTH FESTIVAL 2024 auftreten dürfen.

Zuvor wurden ENSLAVE THE CHAIN für das Festival bestätigt. Außerdem spielen FIDDLER’S GREEN, die wie EQUILIBRIUM ganz oben auf dem Billing Platz nehmen. Letztere hat das Open Air Anfang Dezember als ersten Headliner bestätigt. EQUILIBRIUM werden 2024 zum ersten Mal auf dem Festival zu Gast sein. Außerdem sind HIVE LEADER, SCHATTENMANN, THE PRIVATEER, DIEVERSITY sowie SOUL DEMISE mit dabei.

Schon seit Juli im Lineup sind INFECTED RAIN, die eigentlich schon für 2023 vorgesehen waren, aber aufgrund von terminlichen Überschneidungen letztlich absagen mussten. Weiterhin mit dabei sind TROLLFAUST, STONES OF JORDAN, NITROGEN sowie FRAGMENTATION.

Die Death Metal-Band CASKET ROBBERY hat mit “The Lacryphagist” eine neue Single mitsamt Video-Clip veröffentlicht.

“Es hat mir so viel Spaß gemacht, ‘The Lacryphagist’ zu schreiben”, eröffnet Sängerin Megan Orvold-Scheider. “Als wir beschlossen, dass es endlich an der Zeit war, uns hinzusetzen und mit dem Schreiben für die nächste Veröffentlichung zu beginnen, kamen wir auf ein wirklich großartiges Konzept und dies ist ein wirklich cooles Teil des Puzzles. Ursprünglich wurde ich von den Geschichten über viktorianische Tränenfläschchen inspiriert, und ich liebte die Idee dieser Kreatur, die sich von menschlichen Tränen ernährt und sie in verschiedenen Gefühlszuständen sammelt. Wir konnten einige wirklich groteske Bilder sowohl in den Text als auch in das Video einbauen, das wir gedreht haben. Ich denke, diese Single zeigt unsere natürliche Weiterentwicklung als Band und unser Songwriting; textlich werden wir düsterer, bleiben aber unseren augenzwinkernden Horror-Vibes treu, mit denen wir so viel Spaß haben.”

Die Stoner / Psychedelic Rock-Band FOSTERMOTHER hat mit “Echo Manor” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist nach “Fostermother” (2020) und “The Ocean” (2022) das dritte Album der US-Amerikaner aus Houston.

“Echo Manor” wurde von Bandgründer Travis Weatherred produziert und mit einem Cover-Artwork von Kimberly Weatherred ausgestattet. Release-Termin ist der 23. August 2024 via Ripple Music. Vorab gibt es mit “King To a Dead Tree” einen Video-Clip.

Produziert wurde “Tennessee” von John Carter Cash in Johnny Cashs “Cash Cabin Studio”. Die Wahl des Studios erklärt der Musiker:

„Ich habe John ganz einfach angeschrieben und ihm einen Song meines 2021 erschienenen Albums „True Stories“ zugeschickt. Als Fan seines Vaters und ebenfalls Bewunderer von ihm selbst als Produzenten, war diese Kontaktaufnahme ein absoluter Schnellschuss. Ich habe es ehrlich gesagt gar nicht ganz realisiert, als ich die Antwort von John direkt bekommen habe. Er schrieb, dass er vollkommen begeistert von meiner Musik und von meinem bisherigen Weg ist. Ich denke dies, meine Stimme und mein Songwriting haben John letztendlich überzeugt und ihn dazu gebracht, mir vorzuschlagen, dass wir gemeinsam ein ganzes Album produzieren.“

Revisiting your old music is like meeting an old friend you haven’t seen in years. It’s a path of rediscovery, where you recognize the familiar notes and rhythms, but see them through the lens of all you’ve experienced since. It’s as if you’re unearthing forgotten treasures, each chord and lyric a relic of your past self, waiting to be reawakened. With a fresh perspective, you realize that your old music is not just a static creation but a living, breathing entity that evolves with you. It’s like watching a river flow; the water is never the same, yet its essence remains constant.

Night Nail dives deep into the deep well of their own past and emerges with the recharged Nowhere (Kill Shelter Remix), a track originally brought to life at Valley Recording Studios in 2014. Picture this: James Hendrix on bass guitar, Justin Deactivere on synths, Justin Lomery on guitars and backing vocals, Bryan Panzeri on drums, and Brandon Robert on guitars and vocals, all fueled by youthful exuberance, raw energy, and a budget that barely covered the pizza. They managed to make their mark, despite the odds.

Never quite satisfied with the original recording, Brandon whisked the masters off to Berlin, Germany, where he’s been hanging out for the last seven years with a revamped lineup that includes Justin Deactivere and Ilija Gavrilenko. After some serious tinkering and remastering by Pete Burns (Kill Shelter), the song – already a black diamond in the rough – finally hits its stride. Drawing inspiration from legends like the Chameleons, Tones on Tail, and The Sound, Night Nail confronts their old ghosts with renewed purpose and gusto.

“Some songs take longer than others to finish, even 10 years might be required, if your resources are limited when you first start out,” says Robert.

Some things are worth the wait.

The DIY performance video has a few fun cameos: Pete Burns makes an appearance, as well as Valentina Veil (VV & the Void).

Night Nail’s music is like a playful Zen koan, refusing to fit neatly into any box or label. They dance joyfully on the edges of genres, dipping into a vast reservoir of musical history while cheekily thumbing its nose at the borders. Robert presents melodies that defy time and space, liberating our ears from the shackles of classification and definition. It’s a harmonious rebellion, a delightful reminder that music, like life, is best enjoyed without trying to pin it down.

Mit “Smog” wird am 26. Juli 2024 via Hypaethral Records die neue EP der Death-Doom Metal-Band ABSORB erscheinen. Die Scheibe folgt auf die 2023er-EP “Rot”. Zuvor haben die Kanadier zwei Alben veröffentlicht.

“Smog” wurde von Nick Ginn gemixt und von Jamie King gemastert. Vorab gibt es den Track “Dissociated” zu hören.

“”Dissociated” ist eine Mischung aus dem Ende einer zweijährigen COVID-Sauftour und der Vorstellung, jeden in meinem Leben zu verlieren, wenn das Mobilfunknetz für mehr als vierundzwanzig Stunden ausfällt. Es fühlt sich an wie eine Isolation, die dich immer weiter vergräbt”, sagt Sänger Erik Thorkildsen.

“Nach dem Verlust meines Hundes folgte eine kreative Durststrecke, aber nach einem Treffen mit meinem Songwritingfreund Craig Walker (Archive/Power of Dreams) und dem Austausch über die letzten Monate drängte er mich, diese Erfahrung in Texten und Musik zu verarbeiten. Plötzlich flog das Album aus mir/uns heraus! Was den Aufnahmeprozess angeht, so war dieses Album wahrscheinlich das angenehmste, da die verschiedenen Kollaborationen die Kreativität befeuerten.”

Drei Jahrzehnte “Dark Funeral”: Die Black Metal-Band DARK FUNERAL feiert das Jubiläum ihrer gleichnamigen Debüt-EP mit einer Neuaufnahme. Die “30th Anniversary Edition” erscheint am 9. August 2024 via Century Media auf CD, Vinyl sowie digital und enthält zusätzlich auch die Originalversionen der vier Stücke. Eines davon steht mit “Shadows Over Transylvania” nun als Audiostream bei bandcamp bereit.

Wie sich die überarbeitete Fassung anhört, kann man sich zudem mittels der Single “Open The Gates” bei YouTube herausfinden. Lord Ahriman erklärt:

“Im Januar 1994 steckten Blackmoon (RIP) und ich unser gesamtes Einkommen und unsere Ersparnisse in eine Aufnahmesession und das Pressen von 1.000 Kopien unserer 4-Track-Debüt-Mini-CD. Eine Mini-CD, die wir auch selbst veröffentlichten.

Dass wir nun mit einem epischen 30-jährigen Jubiläum einen bedeutenden Meilenstein erreichen, ist natürlich eine große Ehre für mich und die Band. Drei Jahrzehnte schwedischer Black Metal, gefüllt mit wertvollen Erinnerungen.

Die Brutal Death Metal-Band CRANIAL DISORDER hat einen Labeldeal bei Lethal Scissor Records unterschrieben. Der Deal sieht den Release des neuen Albums “Congenital Depravity” vor, welches am 10. Juli 2024 erscheinen wird. Es ist das erste Album der Band aus Indonesien.

Nach dem Lyric-Video zu “Perpetual Dismemberment” und dem Song “Compulsive Savagery” gibt es mit “Traitor” nun einen dritten Track.

Aus Alt mach Neu: Den großen Umbruch im Jahr 2022 verkrafteten NEW YEARS DAY auch deshalb so gut, weil die Neuzugänge mit dem Alternative Metal der Band im Prinzip bestens vertraut waren. Bassist Brandon Wolfe war wie Gitarrist Jeremy Valentine bereits in der Vergangenheit für die Formation aktiv, weshalb sich der Line-up-Wechsel letztlich im kreativen Output nur unwesentlich bemerkbar macht.

„Half Black Heart“ ist somit schlicht mehr von dem, was Fans zu schätzen wissen und alternative Radiostationen mit offenen Armen willkommen heißen. Die simplen Riffs sind breitwandig und satt, das Schlagzeug schnörkellos mit dezentem Groove und der Songaufbau stets bewährten Mustern folgend. Und das ist bewusst so gewählt: Anecken wollen NEW YEARS DAY ja auch gar nicht, dienen die zwölf Stücke in der Regel doch vorwiegend als Vehikel für Sängerin Ash Costellos kraftvolle Stimme.

Ihr zur Seite stellt das Quintett in „Secrets“ oder dem Titeltrack auch ein paar markige Screams, um dem metal-affinen Teil der Hörerschaft ein wenig Honig ums Maul zu schmieren. Doch grundsätzlich bleibt „Half Black Heart“ catchy, ohne sich vor poppigen Anleihen zu verschließen. „Fearless“ wechselt beispielsweise unverhohlen zwischen rockig-röhrendem Refrain und Synth-Beat, ohne allerdings zu sehr in seelenloses Kalkül zu verfallen.

Typisch amerikanisch klingt der moderne Stilmix natürlich dennoch und dürfte somit auch seine Zielgruppe klar definieren: Kraftvoller und eingängiger Alternative-Sound mit Arena-Appeal ist in gewissen Kreisen eine relativ sichere Bank, die eben auch ohne große Innovationen zu funktionieren scheint. Nichtsdestotrotz machen sich NEW YEARS DAY exakt diese Spielart zu eigen, als wäre es die leichteste Übung. Easy-Listening mit sanftem Kick und souveränem Gesang kann ja immerhin auch nicht jeder – wie praktisch, dass das neue alte Line-up mit den Gepflogenheiten des Genres bereits bestens vertraut war.

Die Technical Death Metal-Band SUMMONING THE LICH hat mit “Return to the Soil” den Opener ihres kommenden Albums “Under The Reviled Throne” als Video-Clip veröffentlicht. Es ist nach “United in Chaos” (2021) das zweite Album der US-Amerikaner aus St. Louis.

“Thematisch ist dieses Album definitiv düsterer als “United In Chaos” und wir haben wirklich hart daran gearbeitet, die Wildheit und Bösartigkeit von Lich klanglich zu erreichen, während wir immer noch versuchten, eingängigen Fun Death Metal zu schreiben”, sagt Sänger David Bruno.

“Under The Reviled Throne” wurde von Jack Daniels (WAR OF AGES, HOPE FOR THE DYING) bei The Armory Recording produziert und von John Douglass (u.a. für SONS OF APOLLO tätig) gemastert. Das Cover-Artwork stammt erneut von Austin Phillips.

Bewitching like the Empress
Imagine standing on the precipice of some cosmic stage, feeling the chill seep into your bones while you await some mysterious summons. It’s raining, of course, because nothing says existential pondering like a downpour. Enter the Empress, a figure as hollow as a chocolate Easter bunny left out in the sun too long, commanding shadows to dance like they’re auditioning for a spot on a spectral dance team. Her voice, reminiscent of a mourning dove’s song, fills the air with an almost enchanting allure. Despite her hollow nature, she manages to hold an astounding presence, leaving our narrator spellbound and forever tethered to the darkness she rules. It’s a surreal spectacle of haunting beauty and melancholy, wrapped up in whimsical chaos.

Setting the tone for The Empress, by North Carolina’s dark alternative group Feyleux, is like wandering into a haunted garden party. Mixing dreampop, darkwave, and a pinch of Southern Gothic flair, their sound evokes the likes of Drab Majesty, Echoberyl, Minuit Machine, and Chromatics.

The Empress thrives on a delightful tension between its breezy, effervescent instrumentation and the darker, more fretful tones of its vocals. The music entices you with a carefree melody, but the voices suggest something deeper and a tad unsettling, ensuring you’re always a little bit on edge. It’s that feeling you get when the ouija board starts spelling out something a little too real.

The duo’s debut album, Midnight Hearts, offers a delightful mix of edgy bass synth, swirling guitars, and those icy 80s synthpop melodies that make you feel both nostalgic and oddly futuristic. Ethereal vocals float above, guiding you through songs that explore love, loss, longing, and personal power—all with a hint of the supernatural. Think of it as your favorite ghost story set to music. The lyrics dabble in paranormal activities, the occult, liminal spaces, and even the occasional chat with the undead.

Midnight Hearts manages to balance dreamy urgency with a dash of drama, all wrapped up in dark romanticism and an unexpectedly danceable sense of brooding anger.

Ladies and gentlemen, intrepid explorers of the eccentric and the extraordinary, gather ’round for the wildest, most wondrous surreal synth pop spectacle as Los Angeles-based multimedia artist Geneva Jacuzzi announces Triple Fire, her third full-length album and the first since signing with Dais Records.

Following the album’s preview single, Dry, Geneva Jacuzzi has unveiled her video for the LP’s second single, Art Is Dangerous, where the energy crackles with an ensemble of audacious artists from the heart of the Los Angeles underground scene. These unconventional individuals, experts in the auditory, visual, and performing arts, showcase their display of unadulterated creative rebellion, each making a cameo in a parade of pure artistic anarchy.  Joining the cavalcade are leading figures in the scene, such as Drab Majesty, Twin Shadow, King Woman, Donzii, Kontravoid, the ethereal Weyes Blood, Sextile…and more.

Art Is Dangerous springs from the fevered imagination behind Geneva Jacuzzi’s latest endeavor with Dais Records, her forthcoming new album Triple Fire, set for release on August 23rd. This creation, a symphony of collaboration, features the lyrical and musical minds of Geneva herself, Roderick Edens, and Andrew Briggs. The production is a collective marvel, led by Geneva, with Edens, Briggs, and Josh da Costa contributing their prowess. Dylan McPherson adds an extra layer of synth magic to the mix.

Geneva Jacuzzi, a luminary who first surfaced from the untamed shores of San Diego County, found her true artistic north upon her arrival in Los Angeles in 2001. Here, her wild and immersive multimedia performances transformed into a hallucinogenic blend of masks, costumes, confrontations, and grand installations. Her music, equally lauded, weaves catchy hooks with enigmatic atmospheres, all wrapped in the lo-fi charm of 4-track recordings. She also helmed the synth-wave death-disco ensemble Bubonic Plague, alongside members of The Warlocks and The Centimeters.

With Triple Fire, Jacuzzi expands and sharpens her distinctive mix of midnight melodies and mutant aerobics, delivering a 12-track odyssey of eclectic synth-pop and sly, post-apocalyptic camp.

Als FÏX8:SËD8 im Januar 2021 ihr fünftes Album "The Inevitable Relapse" veröffentlichten, hatte sich der deutsche Dark Electro Act längst als feste Größe in der Industrial-Szene etabliert. Das von dem Hessen Martin Sane gegründete Projekt, dessen Name sich von den psychiatrischen Begriffen "fixiert/sediert" ableitet, begann seine musikalische Reise mit zwei als Eigenveröffentlichungen herausgebrachten Alben, die seit Jahren ausverkauft und somit heiß begehrte Sammlerstücke sind. Das Debüt "humanophobia" erschien 2006 und wurde von HAUJOBBs Daniel Myer produziert. Dagegen wurde das 2009 erschienene zweite Album "dormicum" von Sane in Eigenregie aufgenommen. FÏX8:SËD8 haben sukzessiv ihre eigene Klangwelt erschaffen, indem sie sich kontinuierlich von ihren musikalischen Vorbildern entfernten. Das waren anfangs vor allem die kanadischen Kultbands wie SKINNY PUPPY und FRONT LINE ASSEMBLY. FÏX8:SËD8 setzten gleich mit ihrem ersten Langspieler ein künstlerisches Ausrufezeichen. Das beeindruckende Konzeptalbum "humanophobia" setzt mit einem der größten Verbrechen der Menschheitsgeschichte auseinander: Der Auslöser war sein Besuch in Kambodscha und einem der ehemaligen sogenannten Killing Fields sowie dem dazugehörigen Internierungslager, in welchem das kommunistische Regime der Roten Khmer unter Pol Pot in den Jahren 1975 bis 79 zahlreiche Verbrechen gegen die Menschlichkeit beging. Martin Sane verarbeitet die eindringlichen Bilder des Völkermordes, dem fast ein Viertel der Bevölkerung Kambodschas zum Opfer fiel, durch die Erschaffung einer besonders emotional fesselnden und finsteren elektronischen Musik. Die Musik blieb dunkel, doch auch ohne ein alles umfassendes Konzept dokumentierte das zweite Album "dormicum" im Jahr 2009 durch ein konzentriertes Songwriting und hörbare stilistische Feinjustierungen eine rasante musikalische Weiterentwicklung. Beide Werke erzielten trotz Eigenvertrieb eine erhebliche Reichweite in Electro Industrial Kreisen. Als FÏX8:SËD8 mit jedem weiteren Album einen neuen Höhepunkt in Sachen Songwriting und Produktion erreichte, wurde der Ruf nach einer Neuauflage der beiden längst vergriffenen ersten Veröffentlichungen immer lauter. Daraus entstand letztlich die Idee eines Artbooks, das beide Titel vereint. Da die Zusammenarbeit mit PYRROLINE Vordenker Arnte und seinen ausgeprägten Fähigkeiten in Sachen Produktion und Mixing bereits "The Inevitable Relapse" zugute gekommen waren, fiel die offensichtliche Wahl für das Remastering der beiden ersten Alben auf ihn. Arnte nahm die Herausforderung gerne an und erledigte den Job mit Bravour. Die legendären ersten beiden FÏX8:SËD8 Alben werden endlich wieder erhältlich sein. Es ist höchste Zeit, um mit "humanophobia:dormicum" in die frühen Tage von Martin Sanes elektronischer Industrial Finsternis zurückzukehren.

ZAKK SABBATH kehren mit einer noch größeren Ladung purer BLACK SABBATH-Verehrung zurück! Anlässlich des 50-jährigen Bestehens der berühmtesten Vier aus Birmingham werden die "Erfinder" des Heavy Metal von dem prominent besetzten Tribute-Trio um Gitarrist und Sänger Zakk Wylde mit dem Doppelalbum "Doomed Forever Forever Doomed" erneut geehrt. Mit dieser liebevollen Hommage liefern die Amerikaner brillante Interpretationen von BLACK SABBATHs zweitem und drittem Album ab, also die klassischen Heavy Metal-Meisterwerken "Paranoid" (1970) und "Master of Reality" (1971). ZAKK SABBATH wurden von BLACK LABEL SOCIETY-Gitarrist und Sänger Zakk Wylde gegründet, der auch als langjähriger Lead-Gitarrist von OZZY OSBOURNE und inzwischen auch noch von PANTERA bekannt ist. Nachdem ZAKK SABBATH anfangs mit wechselnden Mitgliedern nur live auftraten, fand die Band schließlich mit dem OZZY OSBOURNE- und ROB ZOMBIE-Bassisten Blasko und Joey Castillo am Schlagzeug (DANZIG, QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE) eine stabile Besetzung. Inspiriert durch das 50-jährige Jubiläum von BLACK SABBATHs selbstbetitelten Debütalbum, veröffentlichten ZAKK SABBATH im Jahr 2020 eine Hommage an diesen monumentalen Heavy Metal-Meilenstein unter dem Titel "Vertigo". Das Album wurde von Kritikern und Fans gleichermaßen mit Lob überhäuft. Das Trio feierte einen weltweiten Erfolg, der sich in beeindruckenden Platzierungen in diversen Charts widerspiegelt: Das Album stieg auf Platz 5 in den US Hard Music Charts, Platz 7 in den Current Rock Albums Charts und Platz 27 in den Billboard Top Album Charts ein. Wie in den vergangenen Jahren überträgt ARTE Concert einen Teil der Shows des diesjährigen HELLFEST live im Netz. Das Festival findet vom 27.-30. Juni 2024 im französischen Clisson statt. Angeführt wird das Line-up der beiden Hauptbühnen von AVENGED SEVENFOLD, MACHINE HEAD, METALLICA sowie FOO FIGHTERS.

Live verfolgen kann man einen Teil des Live-Programms über die Internetpräsenz von ARTE Concert, wobei einige ausgwählte Mitschnitte auch via Facebook Live sowie YouTube übertragen werden (ARTE Concert bei YouTube).

Ein Teil der Konzerte sowie zusätzliche Shows stehen für gewöhnlich nach Ausstrahlung für einen begrenzten Zeitraum auf Abruf zur Verfügung.

Miami’s Astari Nite sets itself apart with a blend of dark alternative sounds and introspective musings on death, love, and the occult; creating an atmosphere that’s both emotionally charged and eerily delightful. Their bold style nudges the boundaries of the dark alternative genre ever so provocatively. With a resume that includes performances alongside legends like Peter Murphy, The Damned, Psychedelic Furs, Cold Cave, Vowws, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and Modern English, Astari Nite has cemented its place in the international post-punk and gothic rock scene.

Their latest LP, Resolution of Happiness, echoes the vibes of Clan of Xymox, Placebo, Franz Ferdinand, and the Psychedelic Furs, all while infusing their signature cinematic flair for the occult. It’s like Bowie’s later work soundtracking a vivid fever dream, whisking you away to an alternate reality where the eerie and the enchanting dance together under a moonlit sky.

Lead singer Mycheal graciously granted Post-Punk.com a rare inside look at the artistic process of creating the album with thoughts on each track:

“Personally speaking, this is something that I always loved to read when diving into an artist that I have admired in the past,” says Mychael. “With each track on Resolution of Happiness, we feel that we have created a sonic experience that transcends traditional boundaries, inviting listeners into a world where the lines between genres blur and the unexpected thrive.”

Double Feature Matinee

From the start, Danny allowed the song to morph into a suite of 4 parts, with a cinematic choir in the middle for a story telling bridge. Slow and heavy like a ballad, once unboxed by the rest of the band it transcends to become the hard dark wave contraption that makes this album uniquely tasteful. Lyrically, I captured the existence of my everyday antics which completes the story. This jingle is honest and gives a chance for our listeners to visualize a day in the life of me.

Necessity Meal

Engaging a hybrid bass line reminiscent of The Doors and Funkadelic, Danny knew he wanted Howard to add additional guitars to give it a more alluring Hendrix style anthem, with an elevating chorus. Once it was gift-wrapped, the song met its glam rock introduction. Staying true to my sincerity, I speak of feeling messy during strange and unusual occurrences while normalizing innocence.

Tongue Tied Galore was written during what seems to be the shoegaze phase that Danny Ae endured, a handful of years ago. It comes across as an ode to his discovery of bands like Placebo, which has high energy yet enough noise that it could bleed with Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine. Fascinated with telling a tale about a shameless friendship and his dislike for social acceptance, I found a way to preach positivity with lines like “Pretty this, pretty that, pretty fuck, pretty drag! Do what you want to, don’t change the volume!”

The “Tongue-Tied Galore” video for us was about portraying a day in the life of the band, or many days in the life of the band from hanging out before and after the shows, to touring and seeing friends, hitting stages near and far such as the Red Party and Dark Force Fest, without forgetting where we came from. Our city of Miami and stages like Churchills (which is greatly missed) were repeatedly paid tribute to throughout the video. Whereas the song itself is visceral in nature, the video absorbs itself and scenes of happiness we shared together. And as such, with the help of our friends the video is made of pictures in the collage of our daily lives, often greater than the sum of all its parts.”

Bowie in Daydreams

Howard’s original demo had a peculiar progression of chords which seesawed optimistic and melancholic elements. David Bowie is and forever will be, a massive inspiration to ASTARI NITE. As the song developed, we wanted to pay respect to his life and have this song float around the universe. Echoing lyrics; “I never asked you to fall in love. Again, and again, I’m sad enough. Bowie in daydreams, October the same thing, yeah, yeah, yeah. Again and again, I’m sad enough, sad enough. Sad.” This moon age poetry was also a way for me to say hello to my brother who passed away in the Halloween month.

The Inevitable Crocodile was highly problematic and took us for what seems like a lifetime to figure out how to understand what was being created. It was tricky and we fell in love with the writing process. In fact, Howard initially made it with a Skinny Puppy 80’s feel, incorporating a DX7 sound. “After many versions it still felt rather alien with an airy synth lead over the chorus that reminded me of a Carl Sagan Cosmos show, floating in outer space.” Once again, I continued to skip down the path of allowing the listener to understand what appears to be factual outtakes of my life. It was a canvas that we all painted together!

Ashtray Ballet came together rather smoothly with all the right components allowing a harsh synth Apoptygma Bezerek 90’s feel, which we submerged under industrial guitars! As a fan of many diverse genres, this is one of my favorites as it’s a true electronic rock composition. From the elegant drumbeat, complimenting dazzling guitars, I threw my heart into a night of debauchery clinging onto anyone that will hear me breathe and that is how Ashtray Ballet was born.

Cut Here for Dialogue automatically took on the persona of a cocaine disco track submerged into the four of our minds which became an enthused “My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult” discotheque- rock track! Howard spread heavy layered glam rock guitars throughout the body of the song. I had an idea to write pads over it giving the song a darker element and Danny wrote what felt like the creepy leads from a prior song of ours called Sunday Queen, which truly made it special and perhaps the hardest song to track and mix on the record.

What a Rainbow Feels Like

This is another example of a powerful electronic / industrial rock track with the likes of classic NIN and Zeromancer, perhaps the best synth work on the entire album, both analogue and digital. My choice of words set the mood for the never-ending question, why and how? Peculiar as always, so they say, I raged a bit with words like: “Send my lover down a river of gold, I’ll be waiting in the chateau of hope.”

All Else is a Curse

So I tend to hum ideas to the band and occasionally, it’s pure magic said nobody ever. It was my version of Fade into You, by Mazzy Star that I set out to write. After pleading my case, if you will, Howard created this dance ballad and put a smile on my stupid face.

We are Still Siamese is the song that never should’ve happened, the skeletal frame is taken from the demo to what eventually became Double Feature Matinee. Originally meant as a secret track after hours of mixing other songs, we continued a late-night session and while mixing the raw tracks, I went for a smoke and tea. After about 30 mins or so, the lyrics were complete and were recorded immediately.
The song was dark, moody and gelled us in a state of trance where everything went right. The guitars are impeccable! I sang this song in two takes, and upon the “Snow Bros” hitting the spacebar to stop recording, Danny and I embraced each other and wept. The last vocal take of the album was done.
Howard wasn’t complete yet as he unconventionally recorded the final guitar part with an electric guitar unplugged and being picked up by only a studio mic. Finally, the song ends with the original piano, first recorded and unedited which gave birth to Double Feature Matinee.

“Before I go, I must say this was very personal for me to do, an activity like this, and I honestly feel wonderful from it, so thank you. Also, for anyone reading this, thank you for allowing our music into your life.”

Brooklynite Madeline Kassen, originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma, releases her music under the moniker Pisha. With a flair for avant-garde electro-pop tinged with a goth rock edge, Pisha fuses experimental sounds with power pop melodies that float above hypnotic rhythms.

Her latest release, WTF, is a quirky, frenetic mix of industrial, new wave, and dream pop influences. Imagine a confection that’s equal parts unsettling and sugary sweet, like a siren’s song luring you to a splendidly chaotic end.

The lyrics, simple yet vividly expressive, deal with the vexing presence of someone who haunts the mind without paying rent. They convey a mix of frustration and bewilderment at why this person continues to linger, underscoring the emotional weight of these unwelcome memories or feelings.

“The video is very dear to my heart, pulling from some of my favorite influences — Lynch, Hitchcock, and Wong Kar-wai,” says Kassen. “The song has the haunting melodies and experimental spirit trademark of Pisha with a D&B style rhythm section culminating in a very groovy bass line. I was inspired by David Bowie and Nine Inch Nails in collaboration for the Lost Highway soundtrack.

The video, directed by Noah Duarte, takes us on a surreal jaunt through Brooklyn with Pisha, starting with an unfortunate encounter with some dubious Thai food. From there, it spirals into a nightmarish escapade filled with fragmented memories and odd nightlife scenes. Picture Pisha navigating the murky waters of disjointed recollections, paranoid dashes through the subway, and bizarre vignettes that feel like snippets of a fever dream. It’s an oddly whimsical yet unsettling visual experience, ending, of course, in gastronomical disaster. One thing is certain: someone at Grubhub is definitely getting a talking to.

WTF comes ahead of her second album, Peace, Love, Pisha, releasing late 2024. A recent graduate of Berklee College of Music, Kassen unveiled her debut album Threnody earlier this year. Pisha has performed throughout New York with acts like Taraneh, Swordes, Glass Spells and Body Meat, as well as toured across the US with darkwave duo Coatie Pop.

Art-rock and indie-pop project The Pull of Autumn unveils their latest creation, the single Lost Time. Nestled within their fifth album, Memory Tree, now available through RBM Records, this track features the evocative vocals of San Francisco’s Julius Manning.

Guided by Rhode Islander Daniel Darrow, a stalwart of the ’80s post-punk outfit Johanna’s House of Glamour, The Pull of Autumn’s core members include Bruce MacLeod, Matthew Darrow, and Luke Skyscraper James, with a rotating roster of collaborators gathered from both local haunts and distant realms.

Julius Manning, a seasoned artist from Southern California’s music scene, lends his voice to Lost Time. His vocals echo the spirit of Nick Drake’s British folk, interwoven with the ethereal qualities of Brian Eno and Sandy Denny.

This gentle, haunting ballad was originally recorded by the late John Neff (who wrote soundtracks for several David Lynch films). “It was a lot of fun to talk and share files back and forth,” says Daniel Darrow. “John was excited to know the song was getting a chance to be heard. He also shared my love for hardware synths and electronics.”

Lost Time was originally written in a living room in California,” adds Julius Manning. “To me, it feels like a way to cope with what’s coming in our world – the escape in order to let go where those dark places run deep. I was happy to see John Neff and Daniel working together to bring this song to the world.”

The visualizer, produced by Luke James, is a hauntingly beautiful vignette. It portrays a woman adrift in the heavens, her gaze occasionally resting on an illuminated globe. Wrapped in the warmth and safety of the spirit world, this imagery captures the essence of the sentiment with a delicate grace.

Described as “a melancholy remembrance of moments in time and life,” Memory Tree  features Philip Parfitt (The Perfect Disaster), Ricky Humphrey (This Twisted Wreckage), San Francisco-based artist Leigh Gregory, Berkeley singer-songwriter Sophia Campbell, and Rhode Island Rock’n Roll Hall of Fame inductee Paul Everett.

“Instead of the free-genre bending of what came before, this new album is focused on a continuous motion of sound that creates an overall effect of electro/acoustic music and ambient sounds,” says Darrow. “Hours were spent on the order of the track selection to create a continuous sound that tells a story reflected on the cover of the album. The tree pointing downward represents the future as well as holding onto the past. This album is a melancholy remembrance of moments in time and life. I am very excited to feature many RI artists whose music I have come to love and respect over many years. Many veterans from around the world also contribute to the album. I feel this album is a concise picture of this moment in time. Every song reflects beauty, future loves and lost loves. I am excited to bring this album and great artists to the light and to have their music heard.”

Memory Tree arrives two years after The Pull of Autumn’s Beautiful Broken World album, which involved several music luminaries, including The Pop Group’s Mark Stewart, Living Colour’s Doug Wimbish and producer Adrian Sherwood. The Pull of Autumn released their debut eponymous album in 2018, followed by Afterglow in 2019, Small Colors in 2020.
