Five years after the last album, “Cmbcrst” stands for a fierce and brutal experience. This is pure Industrial/Electro-Metal with a perfect balance between guitar sounds and menacing electronic sequences carried by menacing bass lines. Some songs are truly furious as if possessed by an imaginary sonic devil. The devil is represented by the hellish vocals of front man Andy LaPlegua. Es ist das erste Album des 2008 erstanden elektronischen Projekts von Alessandro “Otto” Galli, der für seine Musik einen Nintendo Game Boy verwendet. An den Drums wird von er Guido Montanarini begleitet.

Das selbstbetitelte Debütalbum von FLAMEKEEPER ist ein Album, das den persönlichen Wandel von Gründer Marco S. Vermiglio (DEMONOMANCY) musikalisch und lyrisch untermalen soll. Vom wilden Black Metal (gänzlich) abgekapselt gibt es nun Epic Heavy Metal – meist im Midtempo – und cleane Vocals, die mit der Technik etwas voller ausgestaltet worden sind. Während der pure Klargesang vielleicht noch etwas Training braucht, so sind die Vocal-Lines an sich mitunter interessant gestaltet. Da gibt es den einen oder anderen Überraschungseffekt.

Kompositorisch gibt es auf “Flamekeeper” wenige Überraschungen
Kompositorisch sind diese Überraschungseffekte etwas rarer gesät; einzig das leicht müde “Stray yet Still Free” und das anschließende “Us and Them (The Song of the Voiceless)” überraschen mit Western-Dramaturgie. Zwar sind die Songs durch die Bank eingängig und nachvollziehbar, doch manchmal auch etwas langweilig (“The Golden Spark”).

Von der Produktion hätte ich mir dagegen fast etwas mehr Wums erwartet. Zum einen, weil die Ankündigung auch von Epic Heavy Metal gesprochen hat und zum anderen weil Marco S. Vermiglio als Produzent durchaus schon einiges an Erfahrungen vorzuweisen hat.

“Flamekeeper” mag als persönliches musikalisches Tagebuch für Marco S. Vermiglio durchaus dienlich gewesen sein, für den Otto-Normal-Verbraucher, der sich nicht zwanghaft mit der persönlichen Geschichte des Musikers auseinandersetzen will, ist das Album schlichtweg ein durchschnittlicher Heavy Metal-Release.

Red killer Mars the of king of wars..
Oscar Mic, a three-piece outfit from East London, fuses hip-hop, post-punk, and pop to concoct a freakishly satisfying sound – a potent combination of Beck, Sleaford Mods, and the Beastie Boys.

Seamus Hayes, after honing his craft as a one-man band at gigs with lousy sound and perplexed punters, decided it was time to morph Oscar Mic into a band. He brought in old friend and drummer Taan Parker from his previous project Shuffle, and enlisted bass player Rez Erex, a fervent music fanatic and riff maestro. Together, they’ve created a potent mix that’s as compelling as it is unconventional.

Sun Star is an angsty offering, backed with an infectious beat and confrontational vocal delivery from Seamus Hayes. ‘The song starts with what seems like an apology,” he explains. “It’s been a crazy year of self-reflection and self-improvement and I owe most of it to my girlfriend. The verses are in some way directed to my girlfriend.”

Sun Star explores personal turmoil, mental struggles, and the impact of societal chaos on individual lives. There’s a juxtaposition of inner conflict and external warfare, with references to dreams, deception, and the quest for control. The song reflects on the inherited traits and urges that drive human behaviour, set against a backdrop of continuous upheaval. The phrase ‘red killer Mars’ is about the impact of relentless wars and the innocents that suffer, as it delves into themes of violence, war, and the cyclical nature of destruction across generations.

“The Sun Star may represent the opposite of Killer Mars,” says Hayes. “Creativity and enlightenment. I’ve been learning a bit about astrophysics and quantum dynamics recently. It makes everything else seem a little absurd.’

The music video directed by Dovile Meilute features Oscar Mic’s trademark acid visuals.

‘The whole video is based on the circular motion of the archetype of the wheel of life,” says Meilute. “No matter what, the wheel will keep spinning producing new cycles. Always the same always different. Everything is part of the same experience at some point in its existence, meaning we are all on the same wheel spinning non-stop with our highs and lows.”

Das Psychedelic / Ambient-Projekt HARVESTMAN von STEVE VON TILL hat mit “Triptych: Part Two” den zweiten Teil einer Album-Trilogie angekündigt.Reinhören kann man nun auch in die zweite Single “Galvanized And Torn Open” bei YouTube. In den Song ist ein sehr ungewöhnliches Instrument zu hören, Steve von Till berichtet, wie es dazu kam:

“Dieser Track wurde komplett um einen sehr einfachen Beat herum komponiert, den Dave French und ich auf einem alten Stahlwassertank gespielt haben, den ich im Winter 2019/2020 versehentlich mit meinem Schneepflug zerstört hatte. Als ich ihn im darauffolgenden Frühjahr zu meinem Truck rollte, um ihn zum Schrottplatz zu bringen, hörte ich sein Donnergrollen und wusste, dass es ein Stück Percussion-Magie war. Kurz darauf kam Dave für eine Weile zu Besuch nach Idaho, und wir arbeiteten zusammen, um drei Stücke zu komponieren, die auf seinen verschiedenen Klängen basieren. In diesem zweiten Stück geht es darum, den donnernden Bässen Raum zu geben. Ein paar einfache Gitarrenlinien und Synthesizer-Harmonien geben ihm Bewegung, betonen seinen natürlichen Atem und lassen ihn uns auf eine klangliche Reise zu verschiedenen inneren Landschaften führen.”

Teil eins des Drei-Album-Zyklus, “Triptych: Part One”, erschien am 23. April 2024. Die drei Alben erscheinen zu drei Vollmonden des Jahres 2024 – dem Pink Moon an eben jedem 23. April, “Triptych: Part Two” kommt zum “Buck Moon” am 21. Juli via Neurot Recordings raus, der dritte Teil zum “Hunter Moon” am 17. Oktober 2024.

“Der Track entstand bei meinen ersten Experimenten mit Software, die auf Loops basierende Komposition verwendet. Nachdem ich jahrelang den gleichen linearen Prozess wie bei der analogen Aufnahme verwendet hatte, wollte ich nun die Möglichkeit haben, Rhythmen, analoge Phrasen, Delay- und Modulationseffekte in einem bestimmten Tempo zu manipulieren. Ich lud meinen Freund Sanford Parker ein, mich bei meinem Einstieg in diese Welt zu begleiten. Was als Tutorial für das Sampling, Schneiden und Synchronisieren von Percussion-Loops begann, führte schnell dazu, dass er mir zeigte, wie ich meine Fuzzed-Out-Gitarrenimprovisationen mit dem Programm loopen konnte. Wir haben weitergemacht und sind davon weggegangen. Vielleicht wäre es ein Wegwerfstück geworden, wenn nicht etwas in diesen Beats und Fuzz-Gitarren meine Fantasie angeregt hätte. Nach einigen Monaten öffnete ich aus Neugierde die Session und sah mir das Stück erneut an. Der Vibe zog mich sofort in seinen Bann, ich setzte einen soliden Bass-Groove und Synthesizer ein und fand eine organische Abfolge der Loops, die dem Stück Leben und Fluss verlieh, ohne den Loop-Charakter der grundlegenden Tracks zu verlieren.”

SIIE, a Swiss/German darkwave techno duo out of Hamburg, boldly breaks traditional musical molds. Their sound is a seamless blend of the tangible and the otherworldly, drawing listeners into an ethereal, twilight-esque mystique. Ferociously edgy, Violent is an EBM-soaked industrial banger in the vein of Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly, and A Split-Second. The track’s relentless basslines and razor-sharp synths are complemented by haunting vocals, adding a layer of intensity and emotion. The song builds anticipation with a structure that leads to explosive drops, making it a relentless ride from start to finish.

Accompanying the single is a visually striking, Neo-Expressionist music video. This minimalist masterpiece, skillfully animated by Chloé DoliÄ� and illustrated by Anne-Marie Pappas, perfectly complements the intense and evocative nature of the track. Die Heavy Metal-Band MOURNING WOOD hat einen Labeldeal bei Wormholedeath Records unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen werden die Finnen ihre Debüt-EP “Fill Your Grave” am 2. August über das italienische Label veröffentlichen. Im Eigenvertrieb ist die Scheibe digital bereits im Vorjahr erschienen.

“Fill Your Grave” befasst sich mit dem rohen Schmerz des Loslassens. Jeder Track erforscht die verschiedenen Stadien der Trauer, vom anfänglichen Schock bis zur schwelenden Frustration, die den menschlichen Zustand antreibt.

Ex-EQUILIBRIUM-Sänger ROBSE  veröffentlicht sein erstes Album mit neuer Band: Am 16. August 2024 erscheint das Debüt “Harlekin und Krieger”, das elf Stücke umfasst und mit einem Cover-Artwork von Künstler Valtyr daherkommt. Nun kann man sich auch ein Lyrics-Video zu “Von der Schenke zur Taverne” bei YouTube ansehen.

Mit dem Lyric-Video “Hey Sturm” steht seit Juni der zweite Vorab-Track bei YouTube bereit.

Schon Anfang April gab es den ersten Vorgeschmack: Ein Lyric-Video zum Titeltrack kann man sich bei YouTube ansehen. Der Frontmann erläutert:

“Wir sind unglaublich aufgeregt und stolz, euch endlich unseren allerersten Song vorstellen zu können. ‘Harlekin & Krieger’ ist der Titeltrack unseres gleichnamigen Albums, das im August das Licht der Welt erblicken wird.

T.S. Eliot’s poem The Hollow Men is a gritty look into despair, existential dread, and the empty shell of modern life. Written in 1925, it captures the disillusionment of the post-World War I era, painting a world where people drift without meaning or purpose, like “hollow men” who are spiritually and emotionally bankrupt.

The poem splits into five parts, each one peeling back another layer of desolation and fragmentation, hinting that people are full of fluff, not substance. The imagery is stark and surreal, filled with death, dryness, and decay. The kicker comes in the last lines: “This is the way the world ends / Not with a bang but a whimper.” It sums up the poem’s bleak view of existence as a slow fizzle, rather than a grand finale.

Fast forward a century, give or take, and we’re stuck in the same sorry state. Despair and dread have donned new disguises. The Jay Gatsbys of the world are now chattering social media shams; Orwell’s ominous warnings are old news; Huxley’s horrors of drugged docility are daily doses. Art and music are mangled for money, and we’re floundering in global fights, environmental emergencies, political plunder, and swelling fascism. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Maduro’s newest opus, End In Noise, nails Eliot’s Modernist message with a mirror to the visual and auditory agony of a world in constant conflict. Hailing from the heart of Washington, D.C., Maduro is a seasoned sound sculptor, orchestrating shifts for over two decades. This dark electronic maestro wears many masks, merging edgy EBM, grinding industrial, kinetic techno, and brooding darkwave. To this potent potion, he adds a compelling splash of New Beat and breaks rippling through the atmosphere, distorted yet captivating, layered over squalling, buzzy synthesizers.

“Everything is full of noise – the internet, media, propaganda, warfare, consumerism, data, consumption, entertainment,” they say. “The Hollow Men (said) that the world would end “Not with a bang but a whimper” – I disagree. We are saturated with noise.”

Featured single Lips Like Venom captures that feeling of quiet dread, with a robotic voice coming through the chatter of samples, stomping beats, and noise static.

Straight outta Astoria, GIFTSHOP merges talents from The Hi-Scores (NYC) and Rochester’s Bee Eater and White Cotton Panties. They carved out a niche with their 21st-century blend of punk, alternative rock, and pop, laying it down on their five-song “800 Million” EP. Their live shows are a force to be reckoned with, especially in their home stomping grounds in Queens. Their song Things I Feel was featured on the 2022 season finale of ABC’s hit series The Rookie.

The band’s lineup features Meghan Taylor on vocals, Matt Santoro on guitar, Damian Eckstein on bass, and Jordan Kramer on drums. GIFTSHOP’s songwriting stretches across pop-punk, rockabilly, grunge, and even a stellar power ballad. The highs and the lows clash, with the stylish junkie living for the night, caught between allure and a sense of lost direction. There’s You expresses deep loneliness and hidden pain, emphasizing that despite being broken, the speaker’s struggles are invisible to others. The presence of someone special brings a sense of truth and connection, contrasting with their concealed sorrow. This person seems to offer a glimmer of hope or understanding amidst the speaker’s isolation.

Squirrel Nut Zippers fans will love the bonkers Neo-swing throwback sound – with horn section! – of the raucous Spooky Halloween Christmas Too. Featuring Brendan Stiles (Butterbrain) on trumpet and Jake Warren (The Harmonica Lewinskies) on sax, this song lampoons TikTok trends, particularly “Spooky Halloween Christmas,” blending Halloween and Christmas themes. Santa, with his dark mistress and a flame-adorned black sled, offers a creepy yet festive ride. The scene combines Halloween elements like skulls with Christmas trees, while elves, a naughty list, and pumpkin ale add to the eerie holiday mashup. (Sign us up!)

Kewl With Me sketches a relationship where one finds balance and support in another: tackling life’s hurdles side by side, their plans aligning seamlessly. Outside chatter filters out in favour of helping their partner find what they need. It’s a bond built on mutual respect and unwavering companionship. The Breakthrough delves into the past, highlighting the actions, sacrifices, and wrong turns that have forged the person you see today. Despite the rough roads and misguided choices, there’s a resolve to push forward together. The breakthrough represents conquering challenges as a team. In the end, it underscores the notion that life’s true value lies in what you give, not just what you get.

Astoria holds a special place in the hearts of all Astorians as it paints a lively picture of the beloved NYC neighbourhood. The heart of the community beats at spots like Dominie’s and Athens Square, under the shadow of Hell Gate Bridge. The Broadway stop is the gateway, but it’s not Manhattan—it’s the speaker’s happy place in Queens, inviting everyone to join the local bandwagon and enjoy the vibrant life day or night. Portland outfit Federale has released their latest album Reverb & Seduction, out today via Jealous Butcher Records. Led by Collin Hegna, Federale celebrates 20 years with this record. A longtime member of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Hegna has been steeped in feedback and fuzzed-out guitars for just as long.

Reverb & Seduction is a ten-track tour-de-force, blending psych rock with country duets, all while keeping close to the spaghetti western roots that ignited the band’s passion many moons ago. What began as a homage to the Italian ’60s cinematic scores has evolved far beyond those gritty origins. Today’s Federale draws from a diverse array of influences like Depeche Mode, Nick Cave, Lee Hazlewood, and The Brian Jonestown Massacre, delivering something both nostalgic and novel.

This musical homage features a lineup of well-known Portland rock-scene veterans, including talents from The Dandy Warhols, The Shivas, Roselit Bone, Rogue Wave, and Delines. Members of The Black Angels, Jenny Don’t & The Spurs, Mission Spotlight, and Courtney Barnett’s Band also lend their skills to this eclectic ensemble.

“This album to me represents the culmination of 20 years of sonic exploration,” says Hegna. “With each record I’ve allowed a few more genres and musical influences into the playground. And with this, our 6th full length, I wanted to see how well they all played together at once. I was curious what happened when you crossed 80s deathrock with 70s folk balladeer stylings. Or 60s acid jams with string laden country crooning. It turns out it works pretty well.”

A penchant for the darkly romantic weaves through these influences. The guide through these stories delivers the news in a deep baritone, reflecting the gravitas of the song’s arrangements. Distorted guitars, mellotrons, and ’70s-inspired string arrangements sit side by side with driving drum patterns and moaning pedal steel. This goat’s head alphabet soup of inspirations mingles to create a sum stranger than the whole of its parts. A siren calls us in the night towards certain destruction, but its song is so hauntingly beautiful we cannot resist.

Federale has carved out a distinctive niche in the indie music scene, blending their trademark spaghetti-Western instrumental sound with moody vocal arrangements reminiscent of Lee Hazlewood and late-period Leonard Cohen. Through it all, Hegna—as both songwriter and lead singer—maintains a strictly retro vibe.

The album kicks off with Advice From A Stranger, blending the fuzz and feedback of The Electric Prunes and The Veldt, with a dash of spaghetti western drama, complete with clanging spurs and an echoing voice. It’s a gritty opener that sets the stage with a blend of raw sound and cinematic flair.

The pleading Heaven Forgive Me draws on the sounds of Goblin, The Gun Club, and Songs of Faith and Devotion-era Depeche Mode. Its pathos is pure Americana, steeped in sorrow and sin, blending twang and tension into a tale of redemption and regret.

No Strangers is a sonic tribute to songwriter Lee Hazlewood, but its thrilling string section really bringing in the cinematic vibes, channeling Nick Cave, The Church, and Chris Isaak. 

The band can be heard in the trailers for Banshees Of Inisherin and Mona Lisa & The Blood Moon as well as the Swiss action/comedy Mad Heidi.

Die Death Metal-Band VANHELGD hat nach “Kom dödens tysta ängel” mit “Kerernas törst” einen zweiten Track ihres kommenden Albums “Atropos Doctrina” veröffentlicht. Es ist das sechste Album der Schweden und folgt auf das 2018er-Album “Deimos Sanktuarium” nach.

“Sechs Jahre voller Pandemien, Krisen und Kriege sind vergangen, seit wir das letzte Mal den drohenden Untergang der Menschheit angekündigt haben. Vieles und nichts hat sich geändert. Tragödie, Ekstase und Untergang sind immer noch unsere ständigen Begleiter, und das Zeitalter der Menschheit kriecht unermüdlich dem Ende seines Weges entgegen”, kommentiert die Band.

“Atropos Doctrina”, das trotz lateinischem Titel mit Tracks in der schwedischen Muttersprache der Band aufwartet, wurde von Magnus “Devo” Andersson in den Endarker Studios produziert und mit einem Cover-Artwork von Gitarrist und Sänger Mattias Frisk ausgestattet. Release-Termin ist der 12. Juli 2024 via Dark Descent Records.

“Tales From The Thousand Lakes” wird 30 Jahre alt, AMORPHIS veröffentlichten ihr zweites Album am 12. Juli 1994. Zum Jahrestag am 12. Juli 2024 erscheint nun mit „Tales From The Thousand Lakes (Live At Tavastia)“ ein Mitschnitt, bei dem die Band das Album in voller Länge live spielt. Reinschauen kann man jetzt auch in die Live-Version von “Into Hiding”.

Als Appetizer haben AMORPHIS außerdem das Video zu ” Drowned Maid” sowie einen Mitschnitt “von Black Winter Day” geteilt.

‚Drowned Maid‘ ist ein klassischer Crossover-AMORPHIS-Song aus den 90ern. Wenn man heute auf ihn zurückblickt, beinhaltet er eigentlich recht simple Keyboardklänge und Soundeffekte. Der Mix aus doomigem Death-Metal und folkigem Prog ist uns einfach wunderbar gelungen“, erinnert sich Bassist Olli-Pekka „Oppu“ Laine. „Schon damals war der Track ein Liveliebling und auch heute ist es nach wie vor eine wahre Freude, ihn auf die Bühne zu bringen!“

2020 wollten AMORPHIS eigentlich ihr 30-jähriges Jubiläum mit drei speziellen Konzerten feiern, geplant war je ein Konzert mit Songs aus den einzelnen Dekaden in Club Tavastia in Helsinki, Finnland. Dann kam die Covid-19-Pandemie, die Konzerte wurden im Juni 2020 als Livestreams übertragen. Mit dem Live-Album “Queen Of Time (Live At Tavastia 2021)” hat das Plattenlabel RPM bereits 2023 einen Mitschnitt der Konzerte veröffentlicht.

Die Nürnberger Sludge-Band SAUROS hat eine Live-Version von “Nostalgic Anxiety” bei Bandcamp veröffentlicht.

Aufgenommen wurde der Song beim HAMMER OF DOOM Festival 2023. “Nostalgic Anxiety” ist bislang noch nicht als Studioversion veröffentlicht, die Band will ihn aber auf das nächste Album packen:

“Die Chancen stehen gut, dass der Song auf einem SAUROS-Album landet. Wir hoffen, dass wir noch in diesem Jahr neue Songs aufnehmen können.”

Als ich in die neue EP/Single „X-Odus“ und danach noch gleich in die neue Veröffentlichung „Exodus“ reinhörte, war ich sehr gespannt, wie Platten klingen würden, da die Band um Mastermind RONNY MORRINGS im Vorfeld bekannt gegeben hatte das sie im Sound Bild wieder etwas „Back To The Roots“ gehen wollte. So ähnlich erhoffte ich es mir auch von den letzten Alben von z.B. GARY NUMAN oder FROZEN AUTUMN. Und man kann zumindest resümieren, das sich die Band auf jeden Fall bemüht hat, wieder etwas weniger Elektropower und laute Sequenzer Töne einzusetzen. Das klingt teilweise somit alles wieder etwas „weicher“ und „zarter“. Zumal mich der CLAN vor vielen Jahren musikalisch sozialisiert hatte, als ich dereinst ein Tape von der „Medusa“ Platte erhalten hatte, die noch beim legendären 4AD Label erschien und für viele New Romantic Fans noch den sogenannten, wahren „Wave mit Seele“ beinhaltet hatte. Obwohl ich nach wie vor ebenfalls die „Twist of Shadows“, also die Pop Dance Dark Wave Platte aus 1989 vom CLAN sehr favorisiere. Und nun nach 40 Jahren Musikgeschichte und etlichen Alben der Holländer, gibt es die neue Platte mit dem zeitgenössischen Thema „Kranker alter Mann der neuen Welt“, das sich wie ein roter Faden durch die Platte zieht. Von Pandemie bis zu Kriegen und was es sonst noch alles an menschlichen Katatrophen und menschlichen Versagen aktuell hergibt, wird hier Tthematisiert, es ist also ein Sitten und Zeitbild, was wohl leider aktuell nur im negativen Sinne dargestellt werden kann. Dann erfreuen wir uns aber wenigstens an den zehn atmosphärischen Goth Dark Wave Klanglandschaften und die sind wie erwähnt trotz Weltschmerz und Kummer sowie einem Tanz in den Abgrund wieder bei z.b. der „Hidden Face“ aus 1997 angekommen. Melodisch, eingängige und rhythmische Songs wie „Safe Our Souls“ oder „Afterglow“, „X-Odus“ und  „Blood Of Christ“, „Once Upon A Time“ bestechen durch ihren energetischen Wave mit elegischen Synths, während „Fear For A World At War“ und „I Can See Miles Across“ oder „We Are Who We Are“ fast anklagend in großen hymnischen Wave Balladen daher kommen. Bei „I Always Feel The Same“ dachte ich sogar zuerst an THE CURE / THE ESSENCE, so cool kamen da die Gitarrenklänge herein und mit „Arcanus“ gibt es wieder ein grandioses Instrumentalstück. Und natürlich schwebt über allen Songs die markante und tragende Stimme von RONNY MOORINGS. Eine gute Idee wäre zudem mal für alle „Old School“ Fans, das der CLAN eine Tour zu den ersten Platten „Medusa“ und „Clan of Xymox“ fahren würde, das hatten z.B. THE CHAMELEONS mit ihrem erfolgreichen „Script Of The Brigde“ Album umgesetzt.

Since their inception in 2020, Nothingheads have been distilling dissonant grooves and etching their mark in the gritty underbelly of the London DIY scene. Their performances are chaotic spectacles, with songs exploring a gamut of themes from Amazonian mines to modern super sewers, and even the surreal concept of gambling in Gethsemane.

Now, this London garage punk juggernaut releases “Blindspot,” a three-minute onslaught of punk fury that hits you before you even know what’s happened. As the lead single from their forthcoming album, The Art of Sod, “Blindspot” is a blistering assault, evoking the raw energies of Public Image Limited, The Fall, The Buzzcocks, and Magazine. It’s a rapid, ferocious statement that leaves an indelible mark, capturing the zeitgeist of frustration and the cyclical folly of repeating our blunders without gleaning any insight.

“We wanted to convey the sadomasochistic satisfaction of anger outbursts,” the band explains. “The howl of walking into a door frame and trying to make sense of the news, slightly painful, no idea who to blame and somewhat confusing.”

Having forged a formidable reputation on the UK’s underground live circuit, Nothingheads concoct a guitar-driven brew that straddles the lines between dark post-punk and garage punk. Static noise clashes with monumental riffs and snarling vocals, slicing through the sonic mire.

Following last year’s EP, Sunlit Uplands, the band is set to unveil their debut album, The Art of Sod, on November 8th.

AVATARIUM veröffentlichen ihr sechstes Studioalbum: „Between You, God, The Devil and The Dead“ erscheint am 24. Januar 2025 via AFM Records. Ein Video zum Titelsong hat die Band schon heute geteilt – Gitarrist Marcus Jidell kommentiert:

„Manchmal hat man heute als echter Musiker das Gefühl, Teil einer Untergrund-Widerstandsbewegung zu sein und sich einer Kultur zu widersetzen, die unsere Gehirne und Seelen abschalten will. Hier ist ein Song, der deinen Blick auf etwas anderes richten will. Ein Song von Menschen für Menschen.“

Über Song und Album sagt Marcus Jidell:

„ „Long Black Waves“ ist eine Hommage an Bands wie LED ZEPPELIN, MOUNTAIN und BLACK SABBATH. Und wie immer versuchen wir, unseren eigenen Twist zu finden, um die typische AVATARIUM-Stimmung aufrechtzuerhalten. Vor 18 Monaten haben wir beschlossen, ein weiteres Album zu machen, und jetzt ist es (endlich) geschrieben, aufgenommen und abgemischt. Zwischendurch dachte ich, wir würden es nie fertig bekommen, aber nun ist es soweit. Dieses Album hat Doom,  Old School Heavy Metal-Riffs, Akustiknummern und die düsteren Gospelsongs, die AVATARIUM prägen.”

“Between You, God, The Devil and The Dead” wurde von Marcus Jidell produziert und gemischt, im Mastering arbeitete die Band erneut mit Svante Forsbäck zusammen. Das Album Artwork wurde von Erik Rovanpera gestaltet.

Die Doom-Death / Heavy Metal-Band MOOSE CULT hat mit “Book of the Machines” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist nach “Moose Cult” (2023) das zweite Album der englischen und US-amerikanischen Band, die von Jon Higgs (MONSTERWORKS, BULL ELEPHANT, THŪN) ins Leben gerufen wurde. Weiterhin Teil des Teams sind Bassist Hugo Wilkinson (MONSTERWORKS, THŪN), Drummer James Knoerl (GARGOYL, THŪN) und Gitarrist Tommy Loose (SMOKESCREEN).

“Book of the Machines” ist stark von dem Roman “Erewhon” (Samuel Butler, 1872) inspiriert, der einen Abschnitt namens “Book of the Machines” enthält, in dem als eines der ersten Beispiele über Maschinenintelligenz und Selbstreplikation nachgedacht wird.

The question of when the human voice might be overshadowed by AI and technology touches upon the essence of our existence and connection. Technology, like a double-edged sword, holds the potential to both distance and reunite us with our innate nature.

The human voice embodies more than mere sound; it carries emotion, nuance, and the very soul of our shared experiences. As we advance technologically, the risk lies in losing this intimate form of expression. Yet, paradoxically, it is within this very progression that we might rediscover what it means to be human.Or…our deepest fears could indeed be realized, and our agency squashed by the very technology we created.

Industrial-electronic trailblazer Bill Leeb (Front Line Assembly, Delerium) addresses this paradox in the exciting new solo endeavour: Terror Forms, the first taste of Leeb’s debut solo album Model Kollapse. Featuring Shannon Hemmett of Vancouver post-punk quartet ACTORS and her solo project LEATHERS, the duo explore the intricacies of artificial intelligence and the very survival of humanity itself.

Hard-edged yet melodic, danceable and focused on strong songwriting rather than ambient layers, Terror Forms mixes elements of tough electronic dance music with a nod to its impact on newer artists like Gesaffelstein and ADULT. It also carries the mark of darkwave influences, striking a balance between grit and rhythm that keeps you hooked.

The original term “Model Collapse” refers to a phenomenon in artificial intelligence where trained models, especially those relying on synthetic data or AI-generated data, eventually degrade over time. Leeb posits the notion that “as we forge forward on an unprecedented technological scale, it makes me wonder how much longer we can remain in control of various aspects of our lives. Automation has already taken over many industries. With technology running much of the world, will the entire planet eventually be vulnerable to a Model Kollapse? Chaos would surely ensue.”

The video, an AI-generated alternate universe created by Tim Rim Hill, shows Leeb and Hemmett in guises culled from photographs of the two, but in cyborg form. It’s unsettling, creepy, and true to form for this particular song.

Based in Vancouver, Bill Leeb is the brains behind the influential electro-industrial group Front Line Assembly and the ambient-pop duo Delerium. He cut his teeth with Skinny Puppy under the alias Wilhelm Schroeder. Leeb also dabbles in other projects like Noise Unit, Intermix, and Cyberaktif.

In 1987, he started Delerium as a side gig, diving into dark ambient trance and electronic pop. Their 1994 debut, “Semantic Spaces,” put them on the map, winning two Juno awards and leading to collaborations with artists like Leigh Nash, Lisa Gerrard, Kirsty Hawkshaw, Emily Haines, Jacqui Hunt, Matthew Sweet, and Kristy Thirsk. Their hit “Silence” with Sarah McLachlan topped charts globally, its remixes celebrated as some of the best trance tracks ever.

Model Kollapse marks Leeb’s first solo venture since the mid-80s days of Front Line Assembly, when he used to make recordings in his bedroom and released them on limited edition cassette format. This album also involves contributions by LA-based artist Mimi Page, a long-term Delerium collaborator, and Jason Corbett of ACTORS and Jacknife Sound Studio.

Almost four decades on, his new album was recorded and produced in Vancouver, Toronto and Los Angeles with assistance from Vancouver/Toronto-based production duo Dream Bullet and long-term FLA/Delerium cohort Rhys Fulber, plus regular mixing engineer Greg Reely.

The full Model Kollapse album will be released on September 13 via Metropolis Records on vinyl, CD, and digitally.

Hailing from Houston, Mother Ghost is the creative work of two brothers, Oscar and Thomas Flores. They draw from the raw aggression of early post-punk, the catchy grooves of 80s New Wave, and the pounding beats of house music, creating a sound that’s as eclectic as it is electric. Think Gang of Four, Wire, Wall of Voodoo, with a dash of Franz Ferdinand. We promise, the hook will be stuck in your head for hours.

Their latest release, Radio Fantasma, tackles heavy themes like police brutality, class struggles, the longing for family, and navigating the daily grind. The title track, steeped in 70s dance punk, tells a tale of seeking a fresh start and escaping a dead-end life. The protagonist finds solace and unity in the radio’s melodies, blending English and Spanish lyrics to underscore a deep connection to family and culture – right down to the Latin-flavoured outro.

Despite life’s hurdles, the radio’s tunes offer a comforting constant, a lifeline through the chaos.

The music video is a tribute to classic Mexican luchador films, featuring brawling boxers in a dimly lit ring. They tear off in luchador masks to their next escapade, all with a major 80s buddy cop vibe, complete with freeze frames. It’s gritty, it’s bold, and it’s a wild nod to a bygone era.

Originally formed as a straightforward three-piece punk outfit, Mother Ghost slimmed down to a duo after burning through a string of drummers. This twist of fate led them to embrace drum machines and sequencers, opening new doors in their songwriting. They started blending the electrifying beats of late 80s and early 90s dance music with the gritty riffs and experimental edge of contemporary post-punk. Songs are rewritten, rearranged, and mutated until they hit that perfect sequence, a relentless pursuit of the right rhythm and riff.

This vignette sets the stage for Angel, the latest from Brooklyn darkwave artist BEHOR, the alter ego of the multifaceted Haim Jacobs. Emerging from the crucible of a Hasidic upbringing, BEHOR’s music is a defiant outcry against the oppressive chains of his past. His journey is marked by the scars of mistreatment and the biting winds of homophobia within Orthodox Jewish circles, giving birth to a haunting anthem of longing and rebellion.

This haunting anthem explores the depths of forbidden desire, narrating a clandestine romance between BEHOR and an Orthodox Jewish rabbi. The song delves into the shadows of their concealed longings, crafting a vivid and visceral portrayal of defiance and yearning, as they navigate the complexities of their forbidden connection.

With Angel, BEHOR (an Arabic word meaning ‘firstborn’) confronts the fears and consequences of forbidden desire, calling for liberation from the suffocating grip of a homophobic upbringing. Drawing from the ethereal influences of shoegaze, darkwave, and EBM, BEHOR weaves a haunting symphony of shimmering synths, resonant guitars, dark basslines, and evocative melodies. Their sound echoes the spectral tones of Cocteau Twins, London After Midnight, Bronski Beat, Perfume Genius, and Clan of Xymox. With live bandmates Dusk Malice and Kotoji, and Ike Illogbu, BEHOR conjures an enigmatic and otherworldly realm.

BEHOR began as a keyboard player at Jewish weddings and Bar Mitzvahs, evolving into a producer and songwriter by age twelve. A pivotal moment came when a family friend introduced him to Cocteau Twins, shifting his musical perspective entirely. This encounter led him to embrace the realms of goth and darkwave, shaping his path and devotion to these haunting genres.

In BEHOR’s lyrical realm, there is a raw exploration of religious trauma and societal stigmas. Embracing the mantra “Simultaneously dark and glittery,” BEHOR invites listeners to confront their inner shadows and embrace individuality amid chaos. In his world, boundaries dissolve, leaving only the relentless pursuit of truth, freedom, and the tantalizing allure of the unknown.

Since relocating to Brooklyn in the summer of 2023, BEHOR has released two singles. Child debuted in September 2023, followed by Culbertson Drive, a raw exploration of the pain of human existence.

Die Black Metal-Band SERVANT hat mit “Death Devil Magick” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist nach “Blessed by the Light of a Thousand Stars” (2021) und “Aetas Ascensus” (2023) das dritte Album der Niedersachsen und wird am 20. September 2024 via AOP Records erscheinen. Cover-Artwork stammt von Chris Kiesling.

Die lyrischen Themen auf dem Album sind inspiriert von Dichtern und Philosophen wie Charles Baudelaire und Friedrich Nietzsche, aber auch Gemälde von Franz von Stuck aus der Zeit des Symbolismus können hier genannt werden. Die Texte handeln von Gefühlskonflikten, Überzeugungen, Sucht und den Abgründen der menschlichen Natur.
