In some underground scenes, we often find ourselves striving for popularity in a community that celebrates outcasts, the misunderstood, and eccentric misfits. Like misits toys abandoned icy island adrift in a far-off sea, have we collectively become what we once opposed—slaves to fleeting trends, seeking validation in spaces that should encourage individualism? In this ongoing battle between authenticity and conformity, someone needs to step up as the heretic, the outsider of outsiders, the Trend Killer.

Slow Danse With The Dead embodies this very rebellion with their latest single, “Trend Killer,” off their gloomy collection of songs, “Eternal Mourning.” Anchored in post-punk’s stark desolation and coldwave’s icy detachment, this track encapsulates the project’s signature aesthetic—haunting, minimal, and beautifully bleak. Johnny M.’s despondent baritone floats over baroque synth melodies and skeletal keyboard lines, creating a soundscape as somber as it is entrancing.

The music video, rendered in stark black-and-white, echoes the track’s alienation. We follow a pair of boots trudging through a desolate alleyway, a tableau fluttering like clipped bird wings, underscoring the pervasive isolation and existential dread woven through every lyric:

“Trend Killer” isn’t just a rejection of conformity—it’s a quiet anthem for the forgotten, a whisper of defiance against pointless popularity contests, and a chilling reflection on modern solitude.

Slow Danse With The Dead, formerly known as The Endless, began as a solo project by Johnny M. in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 2017. Over the years, the project has grown a loyal following, embracing the moniker “Miserygoth” due to its signature blend of melancholic vocals, evocative lyrics, and minimalistic instrumentation featuring haunting synthesizers, drum machines, and poignant guitar arrangements.

After debuting live performances in 2023, the band expanded with bassist Mal Toxisk and guitarist Aaron Hernandez, further enriching their sonic palette. Their music has received recognition on platforms such as Highway 7 and Frontiere Rock and has been featured on White Light//White Heat, among others.

On May 26, 2025, the independent label Wave Records will release “Eternal Mourning,” a comprehensive collection of Slow Danse With The Dead’s songs up to 2023. It will be available on vinyl with 12 tracks and on CD featuring eight additional bonus tracks.

On their second full-length, Thresholds, Italy’s God in a Black Suit veers dramatically away from comfortable territories, plunging headfirst into the visceral currents of emotional change. Early in 2020, from Matera emerged a quintet: Annalisa Laterza’s bass murmuring beneath Bruno Pantone’s shimmering guitar, drummer Gianluca Natrella driving rhythms, vocalist Matteo Demma’s raw, resonant voice, and Pietro De Ruggieri’s spectral synths shaping new forms. God in a Black Suit draws out a quiet intensity, balancing restraint with resonance. Their music shifts between light and murk, inviting listeners into a space that’s immersive, layered, and unafraid to linger in the in-between. There’s a tension here -measured, deliberate – that pulls without pushing, urging surrender without demand.

Thresholds opens boldly with its title track, an exploration of uncertainty and transformation. Here, life’s continual shifts act as portals to personal growth, urging courage despite the darkness ahead. Each conclusion births fresh beginnings, a cyclical celebration of resilience and rebirth, coaxing listeners to step bravely into the unknown, however intimidating the horizon might seem. psychedelic guitars, whispered vocals.

A New Life kicks down the door with a defiant stomp, ditching conformity for chaos and clarity. God in a Black Suit turn the volume up on personal revolution; an adrenaline rush of liberation that spits on the ordinary and sets fire to polite expectations. Guitars lash and loop with frayed abandon, savage and soaring in equal measure, while Bruno Pantone’s vocals shift between silk and scream…caressing one moment, careening the next. The rhythm section tears through the track like it’s trying to outrun its own pulse. Think Bauhaus channeling Pixies at their most unhinged, with a side-eye to Dead Kennedys’ seething snarl. A manifesto in motion, breathless and bold.



To Forget dials down the rage and lets the ache breathe. Matteo Demma’s voice trails through ghost-scented memories and half-heard promises, collapsing into the soft chaos of loss. There’s a brittle beauty here, a lacerated tenderness that balances restraint and rupture. Jangled guitars snap with the angular tension of Gang of Four, while the swirling melancholy of The Chameleons and the stark pulse of early Wire creep through the mix. It’s a eulogy for emotional architecture: fragile, fractured, and still standing, somehow. I Remember You unspools like a solitary reel of lost footage: grainy, grey-toned, and dusted with the ache of memory. Bruno Pantone’s vocal delivery channels the wounded clarity of Joy Division’s most lonesome moments, while the synths and guitars shimmer in lockstep with Covenant’s emotional precision. There’s a stoic sadness beneath the surface, as if the track itself is pacing the perimeter of a life once lived. The silence between lines feels like a room emptied too soon, each note a soft collision with what’s no longer there.

Dirt grinds forward with menace, dragging a chain of bitter truths behind it. Built on a sinister, slow-motion bassline and methodical percussion, the song takes aim at hypocrisy and self-deception, offering no redemption…only reflection through shattered glass. There’s no flinching here. The vocals sneer and accuse with brutal economy, holding up a mirror to decay both internal and interpersonal. Think early Killing Joke slowed to a crawl, or Christian Death in a brooding, interrogative mood. One More Time” walks barefoot across broken glass. The track aches with longing, steeped in a desperate wish to rewind, to reclaim a version of the self that hasn’t yet been disfigured by loss. The arrangement is sparse but weighty…guitar lines drift like torn photographs, percussion pacing like a pulse trying to slow itself. Pantone’s delivery is cracked and tender, letting the silence speak louder than the lyrics. Childhood joy flickers at the edges, but the center remains cold, asking again and again for time that won’t return.

Sunshine strips away the surface gloss of everyday life to expose a raw sense of disconnection. The lyrics point to a world full of noise and faces, but no real contact. Pantone voices the frustration of being surrounded yet unseen, walking among people who look through you. It’s a track about emotional absence in a hyperactive world: catchy, clear, and brutally honest. Whisper is a quiet song about regret and lost time. Dedicated to maternal bonds, it deals with distance- emotional and temporal – and the pain of not understanding until it’s too late. The arrangement is sparse, allowing each word to land with weight. There’s no sentimentality here, just clear sorrow and the wish for a second chance. Invisible is a blunt expression of detachment and fatigue. Matteo Demma writes with clarity about the desire to withdraw, to watch the world without engaging. The song deals with emotional numbness, disillusionment, and disappointment, backed by a slow, heavy rhythm that mirrors the drag of routine and the dull pressure of existing among people without connection.

Celebrating the transformative power of intimacy, Together highlights the deep, sometimes tumultuous connection between lovers. Embracing vulnerability and emotional liberation, the lyrics illustrate how love can simultaneously cage and free individuals. It underscores the willingness to lose oneself entirely within another, revealing love as both refuge and liberation.

Goodbye is direct, raw, and unafraid. The song deals with paralysis in the face of finality, asking hard questions and offering no easy answers. It’s about confronting the urge to disappear and turning that impulse into action or clarity. The tension builds through repetition, making space for honesty in uncomfortable places. Breath shifts toward clarity and calm. Stripped of excess, it leans into quiet affirmations: night, stillness, and emotional reset. The message is simple…start again, seek peace, reject clutter. The tone is measured and sincere, encouraging movement away from fear and toward connection, self-respect, and emotional openness.

End closes the album with quiet intensity. There’s no drama; just acceptance, and the weight of parting words. It’s about closure through presence, not detachment. The lyrics speak to mutual understanding in the face of endings, recognizing the emotional residue left behind without turning away from it. The farewell lands softly, but firmly.

Johnathan Christian spoke with Post-Punk.com about their infliences, the creation of the video, and today’s volatile political climate.

“Where Do We Go From Here” deeply examines the psychological costs of silence and complicity. What initially drew you to explore these complex themes in your music?

Johnathan: After our last release, Resistance Mon Amie, which raised funds for The Trevor Project, I honestly felt like I’d said all I needed to say. I was considering walking away from our project. But then the 2024 election happened, and everything shifted. What really struck me wasn’t just those of us who opposed Trump’s reelection—it was the people who supported him and then publicly expressed regret. You’d see posts from folks losing jobs, losing healthcare, or watching loved ones deported after believing the narrative that this administration was only targeting the “bad immigrants.” That dissonance—the collective silence, the complicity, and the slow realization of consequences—was impossible to ignore. This song isn’t a lecture. It’s a mirror. It asks the same question from both sides.

The music video opens with imagery from Maya Deren’s 1944 surrealist film At Land. How did her vision influence the emotional tone you wanted to convey?

Johnathan: The Deren footage was a last-minute discovery, but it immediately resonated. Watching her crawl onto shore, dazed and disoriented, felt like the perfect visual metaphor for where we are right now—exhausted, destabilized, unsure what’s next. As the music builds, she rises—not in some triumphant way, but because she has to. That scene became a stand-in for bodily autonomy, for the erosion of rights, for the criminalization of medical choices—not just for women, but for doctors and even Uber drivers. “We still rise” isn’t a motivational tagline—it’s a survival instinct. And that same instinct applies to everyone trying to regain control in a world that keeps taking it away.

Xtian- Does identity evolve as the environment around us changes, or does it erode under pressure? That’s where Maya Deren’s At Land becomes essential. Her character is caught in shifting, surreal terrains, struggling to maintain a coherent sense of self. It’s a metaphor for how we all navigate disorientation—especially in times of political and social upheaval. There’s also a deliberate contrast between the phrases “we still remain” and “we still rise.” The former is descriptive—it implies endurance without transformation. The latter is aspirational—a choice to move forward, to resist, to reclaim identity in spite of chaos. That distinction is everything. Remaining is survival. Rising is rebellion.

In the video, poetic isolation gives way to stark documentary-style imagery—divided families, empty classrooms, flickering headlines. What guided your visual choices?

Johnathan: We wanted to show the full collapse—from the personal to the societal. The surreal opening is how it feels internally: lost, disoriented. But the documentary-style imagery reflects the external reality: institutions crumbling, lives destabilized, systems failing. That tension between what’s felt and what’s seen is the emotional core of the video.

The thumbnail references Apple’s iconic 1984 ad, itself a nod to Orwell’s dystopia. What’s the symbolism behind it?

Johnathan: That was 100% intentional. Illustrator Vlad McNeally really captured the spirit of mass media manipulation. These days, a lot of us have friends or family who’ve been completely consumed by far-right media narratives. They’re not thinking critically—they’re reacting, performing, repeating. That image reflects how easily people are programmed when fear is the default setting.

Xtian: In the Orwellian context, the video draws heavily on themes of historical revisionism and doublethink. When you layer that with the idea of complicity, you’re left with a deeply tangled, uncomfortable truth. The core narrative we’re exploring is whether identity is fixed, fluid, or ultimately distorted by external forces.

How does the song confront the impact of silence and complicity in today’s political climate?

Johnathan: Silence enables everything. It allows bad policies to fester and authoritarianism to take root. This song was about breaking that silence—not just in a performative way, but in a visceral, emotional sense. We wanted people to feel the weight of what’s been ignored or excused—and then decide whether they’re content to stay quiet.

You’ve often tackled external threats—like the Russian invasion in “Talkin’ Bout the Wolf.” Why the turn inward with this one?

Johnathan: Great question. With Talkin’ Bout the Wolf, we were calling out geopolitical aggression. But it started to feel hypocritical to look outward without acknowledging the rot within. You can’t critique fascism abroad if you’re ignoring the seeds of it at home. This song is us looking in the mirror—and daring others to do the same.

The contrast between surrealism and realism in the video is striking. Why blend these two cinematic languages?

Johnathan: Because we’re living in both at once. The surrealism reflects the psychological breakdown, the emotional whiplash. The realism grounds it in the world we can’t escape. One without the other would’ve felt incomplete.

Propaganda plays a subtle but critical role in your video. How does your music address the destructive power of misinformation?

Johnathan: Xtian and I were laser-focused on that point. The chorus is about being seduced—by media, by politicians, by whatever “truth” sounds most comforting at the time. But comfort can be a trap. Propaganda doesn’t just mislead—it isolates, and then exploits. That’s what we wanted to expose.

What role do you see goth and post-punk communities playing in resistance and antifascist messaging?

Johnathan: These scenes have always been about confronting darkness—whether internal or external. They’re built on questioning, on pushing back, on refusing to conform. I hope this track inspires people to speak out, act up, and demand more from those in power. As what some may refer to as an “elder goth” it’s heartbreaking to think we may live the rest of our lives under a hardline conservative SCOTUS—but now more than ever, resistance matters.

“We still remain” vs. “WE STILL RISE.” Was that balance between despair and hope intentional?
Johnathan: Absolutely. “We still remain” acknowledges the damage—the fatigue. But “WE STILL RISE” points toward action. Even if it’s grim, we needed to show that there’s a way forward. Otherwise, what’s the point?

What was your creative process for turning these political themes into a cohesive song?

Johnathan: Xtian and I have this writing rhythm where I’ll bring in a concept or skeleton of a lyric flow or ideas, and Xtian will distill them into something tight, poetic, and devastating. He wraps it up in a perfect little black box—haunted, but complete.

Xtian: Sometimes the lyrics inform the visuals. Sometimes it’s the other way around. But it’s always a dialogue. A process of reflection.

You had to pivot the project due to a serious hand injury. Did that shape the final outcome?

Johnathan: Oh yeah. I lost a knife fight with a chorizo sausage and a freshly sharpened Japanese carving knife. Severed a nerve, hit what they called a “mini artery”—which, yes, is apparently a real thing. I was 50–70% finished with a few more tracks, but playing was off the table. So we pivoted and decided to release this one as a standalone single, with remixes.

How did the remixes by The Joy Thieves and Stoneburner expand on the message of the original track?Johnathan: I’m honored to be part of The Joy Thieves collective. Lee Meadows—co-founder of World Goth Day—played bass on this, and Dan Mulligan joined on drums. Steven Archer’s Stoneburner remix adds grit and menace—more nihilistic, more aggressive. The Joy Thieves’ version brings a kind of twisted optimism. Same foundation. Different emotional lens.

What lasting impact do you hope this song and video will have?

Johnathan: We want people to make noise. Call your representatives. Email. Fax—if anyone still does that. And most importantly: vote. It’s unbelievable how many people sat out such a critical election. This moment doesn’t just affect us—it affects generations. If this song does anything, I hope it shakes someone out of their silence.

Do you plan to continue exploring these political and psychological themes in future work?

Johnathan: Hard to say. I thought I was done. But the world keeps giving us more to process, more to challenge. If it moves us again, we’ll respond.

When love is torn from existence without warning, reality fractures into splinters of confusion. Time skips like a scratched vinyl record, repeating blurred echoes of better days, leaving a relentless ache beneath every waking moment. This existential dislocation forms the emotional core of DECEITS‘ stunning new release, All We Are (Are Memories). Stockholm-based aux animaux crawls from beneath the city’s neon gloom, conjuring her latest spectral invocation, Thrill Kill. Born in Istanbul and seasoned as a bass guitarist before her northern migration, aux animaux now curates and cultivates every trembling synth and whispered word herself. Her performances are séances in motion; her fingers dancing between the bass strings and the theremin, an instrument she christens her own personal source of sorcery.

aux animaux mines a spectral lineage drawn deep from the nocturnal pulse of 80s goth and darkwave, as well as cinematic conjurations from the vaults of horror and occult lore. Yet Thrill Kill amplifies her fixation on sinister attractions, where darkness is seductive, and dread becomes delicious. Here, aux animaux channels the unsettling essence of true crime infamy, casting an incantation that blurs seduction with annihilation.

Thrill Kill unfolds through the eyes of a predatory figure, one whose appetite for danger thrives on hypnotic allure and relentless compulsion. It speaks directly from villain to victim, dripping with seductive menace and twisted enticements. Every repetition of its rhythmic invocation heightens the trance…an invitation as irresistible as it is ruinous. Here, horror and enchantment entwine, each lyrical stroke tracing a vivid outline of violent desire and doomed surrender.

Yet beneath its chilling allure, Thrill Kill doubles as a veiled allegory for self-destruction and rebirth, a dark mirror reflecting internal violence; the implosive sabotage we wage upon ourselves. aux animaux summons listeners into a hypnotically sinister dance, where mortality and metaphor merge.

Thrill Kill by aux animaux

Thrill Kill was written, produced, and mixed by aux animaux, with mastering handled by Doruk Öztürkcan of She Past Away. Since releasing her first songs in 2017, aux animaux has steadily built a body of work that explores both the political and the personal. Her debut EP Black Holes tackled themes of animal rights, feminism, and societal critique, while its follow-up, Stockholm Synthrome, intertwined those concerns with reflections on her decade-long struggle with misophonia. In early 2022, she unveiled The Hydesville Episode, a conceptual release steeped in the eerie mood of vintage horror film scores. Later that same year came Hauntology, which paired four original tracks with remixes by Tobias Bernstrup, Priest, Majestoluxe, and aux animaux herself. Closing out 2023, she released her debut full-length, Body Horror, via Manic Depression Records.

Over the past few years, she has shared stages with She Past Away, Then Comes Silence, Kontravoid, Buzz Kull, Traitrs, DAF, Agent Side Grinder, and Hante. She’s currently on tour in Europe: dates are below:

Der Soundtrack unserer Realität
„Sing Like A Siren“ ist nicht einfach nur ein Song – es ist ein cineastisches Klanggewitter, das die Emotionen unserer Zeit auf den Punkt bringt. Für Jerry Heil ist der Song „mehr als nur Musik – er ist der Soundtrack zu dem Film, in dem wir leben.“ In diesem Film stehen zwei Hauptfiguren im Mittelpunkt: ein Mädchen – und das Element Wasser. Doch mit jeder Zeile wird klar: Die beiden sind eins. Mensch und Natur, untrennbar verbunden. Das tobende Wasser wird zur Metapher für die Herausforderungen auf dem Weg zum sicheren Hafen. Und die wichtigste Erkenntnis: Wir müssen die Natur nicht bekämpfen – wir sind ein Teil von ihr. Vielleicht sind wir es sogar, die den Sturm verursachen.

Ein Lied als Stimme für die Ukraine
Doch „Sing Like A Siren“ geht über Musik hinaus – es trägt eine politische Botschaft. Der Song ist gleichzeitig der Soundtrack zur neuen Within Temptation-Doku „The Invisible Force“, die ihre Reise in die Ukraine dokumentiert. Dabei geht es nicht nur ums Beobachten, sondern ums Mitgestalten: Die Band setzt sich aktiv dafür ein, ukrainische Künstler*innen zu unterstützen – und nimmt einige von ihnen mit auf ihre „Bleed Out 2024“-Tour.

Die Alternative Metal-Band REVNOIR präsentiert ihre neue Single „Night Terror“ in Bild und Ton bei YouTube.

Sänger Will Ramos erklärt zu „Oblivion“:

„Das Schreiben dieses Songs fühlte sich an wie die Krönung all dessen, was wir in der Vergangenheit getan haben, aber auf die nächste Ebene gebracht; eine weiterentwickelte Version dessen, was Lorna Shore wirklich ist. Ich stellte mir eine post-apokalyptische Welt in der (hoffentlich fernen) Zukunft vor. Eine Welt, in der wir die Saat unserer eigenen Zerstörung gesät haben.

Die Vorstellung, dass wir uns etwas Besseres gewünscht haben, dass wir gehofft haben, etwas zu tun, was uns in dieser sterbenden Welt retten würde, nur um am Ende ihre unausweichliche Zerstörung zu beschleunigen. Das wirft die Frage auf: Was ist richtig? Wissen wir überhaupt, was wir da tun? Was haben wir getan, um zu versuchen, tatsächlich etwas zu ändern? Bewässern wir die Erde oder füttern wir nur ein ständig wachsendes Feuer?“

Georgi, the dark synth‑pop doyenne whose name reverberates through the digital underground, steps back into the glare with Shadows, out now via Bitch House Records. The track glints with serrated synths and iron‑lung percussion, sealing her crown as “The Girl in Synth,” a phantom voice marrying billboard bravado to coffin‑club cool.

Within the lyrics, suspicion slow‑dances with self‑doubt. Memories of a domineering lover lurk at the edge of every line, demanding knees on cold concrete, while fleeting optimism tussles with the perils of addiction and questionable life choices. Georgi distills this chaos into a blissful chorus, delivering an anthemic gothic pop credo sharpened for club floors. Admirers of Depeche Mode’s sleek despair, Crystal Castles’ circuit‑board turbulence, or the contemporary noir pop of Santigold and Anika will feel at home.

“Shadows is a song I wrote about heartbreak, youth, and not understanding the world,” Georgi explains. “There’s a lot of emotion and rawness in it. I see it as a bridge — musically and emotionally — from where I’ve been to where I’m going.”

The accompanying video, first chapter of a wider visual arc, transposes surrealism onto pop’s canvas: Georgi suspended in void, prowling night roads, then wandering a crimson forest to embrace a goat and walk through the flames toward a creature of the night… a dream‑logic pilgrimage filmed by Sultan Mars. Sometimes escape calls louder than daylight.

Co‑writer Rob Wells threads early‑2000s hooks through Georgi’s lifelong fixation on ’80s and ’90s industrial music. Yet it is studio sorcerer Dave “Rave” Ogilvie; he of Skinny Puppy, Nine Inch Nails and Ministry infamy, who supercharges the song, stacking analogue circuitry until the mix hums like a power station at midnight.

“Every once in a while, I come across an artist or a song I just have to work on,” says Dave Ogilvie. “With Georgi, it was both. The rest will make history — Georgi is here to stay.”

Ogilvie’s alloyed layers lock with programmer Anthony “Fu” Valcic (Front Line Assembly, Delirium), whose sly nod to Depeche Mode’s It’s No Good earned Martin Gore’s blessing…a synth‑scene benediction.

“When Dave Ogilvie came by the studio to work on Shadows for Georgi, I was immediately drawn to the track. Totally up my alley,” says Valcic. “As things go in the studio, soon I was privileged to get swept into the creative vortex of contributing to this amazing track and indeed into her orbit of collaborators.”

Die Death Metal- / Deathcore-Band SHADOW OF INTENT veröffentlicht ihr fünftes Studioalbum. „Imperium Delirium“ erscheint am 27. Juni 2025, folgt „Elegy“ (2022) nach und enthält zwölf Tracks. Einer davon enthält ein Gastfeature von CANNIBAL CORPSE-Frontmann Corpsegrinder und ist vorab als Clip online zu sehen: „Feeding The Meatgrinder“ bei YouTube. Mit dem Video „Infinity Of Horrors“ legen die US-Amerikaner jetzt nochmals nach.

Zuvor gab es bereits die Single „Flying The Black Flag“ als Single-Auskopplung im Stream.

Ein neues Zuhause haben VIANOVA gefunden: Seit Herbst 2024 veröffentlicht die Alternative Metal-Band ihre Musik via Arising Empire. Die neue Ära leitete das Quartett mittels der Single „Más Rápido“ ein, zu der es ein Musikvideo bei YouTube gibt. Den Mix des Songs übernahm Leon Schmidt, das Mastering Jens Bogren.

Nun folgt ein weiterer Track: „Whatever Alright“ bei YouTube.

Die vorherigen Singles „Melanchronic“ und „Wheel Of Fortune“ sind ebenfalls als Clip bei YouTube zu sehen.

Zuletzt erschien die EP „…A Way Out“ im Jahr 2023.

Wie ironisch ist doch die menschliche Existenz. Einerseits steht da diese große Entwicklung des Gehirns, was uns in nur wenigen tausend Jahren vom Nomaden zum Smartphonenutzer machte, zu Wesen, deren Lebensspanne sich von 35 Jahre auf fast 80 Jahre verlängerte. Die Spezies, die Krankheiten besiegt, Naturgesetze erkennt und beschreibt, zu Kunst fähig ist. Andererseits ist es auch die Spezies, die den Planeten ausbeutet, nicht über ein paar Jahre hinausdenken kann, den Klimawandel anheizt und leugnet, sich gegenseitig unterdrückt und umbringt. Das Großartige und das Schreckliche liegt so nah beisammen, dass einem Angst und Bange wird. Dabei wirkt es so, als wäre die Menschheit auf der Entwicklungsstufe von Kleinkindern, wahlweise auch Teenagern. Einerseits wissbegierig und liebenswert, andererseits grundlos destruktiv und durch und durch boshaft. Wer trägt Schuld, dass die Entwicklung in Teilen so gründlich schiefgegangen ist? Der Verfasser weiß es nicht, STEVE VON TILL weiß es nicht. Deshalb spürt der NEUROSIS-Frontmann auf seinem siebten Soloalbum „Alone In A World Of Wounds“ in diese Wunde hinein.

„The Corpse Road“ bringt gleich die zentralen Gedanken auf den Punkt: Eine Besinnung auf das Zentrum der Existenz. Was können wir erwarten vom Leben? Buddhisten sagen, Leben sei Geburt, Schmerz, Krankheit und Tod. Ergo die Textzeile: „The corpse road, our only birthright“. Dass sich das Stück mit flächigen Synthesizern wie aus dem Nebel erhebt, ist dabei kein Zufall: Der Verfasser, mit Brainfog durch das Leben mäandernd, wird sogleich auf das eingeschwungen, was zählt. Es geht zur Basis des Lebens, in der die Naturgesetze die Macht haben, nicht der Wille des Menschen. Dabei schlägt der Song stimmig die Brücke zu „No Wilderness Deep Enough“: STEVE VON TILL bleibt auf seinem eher Ambient-basierten Weg, schichtet subtil Instrumente inklusive Cello und Horn aufeinander, schafft es aber, die großen Momente kompakt zu halten.

STEVE VON TILLs siebtes Soloalbum „Alone In A World Of Wounds“ schlägt eine Brücke zwischen Ambient und der Folk- und Americana-Vergangenheit des Künstlers.

In der Folge entwickelt sich „Alone In A World Of Wounds“ in verschiedene Richtungen. „Watch Them Fade“ basiert auf Piano und Cello und schafft trotz knapper Länge und klarer Songstruktur mit emotionalem Chorus einen großartigen Spannungsaufbau, inklusive etwas Wut – freilich nicht auf NEUROSIS-Level -, mit einer Klimax, die zumindest ein wenig Erlösung verspricht. Die Soundscapes von „Horizons Undone“ erzeugt eine Atmosphäre, die an „The Eye Of Every Storm“ erinnert. Auch wenn der Song in der Strophe nur aus Gesang und Synthesizer besteht, hat er Power und wirkt treibend. Die Sensation folgt im Chorus: STEVE VON TILL experimentiert hier mit seiner Stimme. Das tiefe Brummen weicht einer Kopfstimme, und es steht ihm unwahrscheinlich gut. Der Effekt mag klein sein, es ist bezeichnend dafür, dass sich der Musiker Neues traut. „Alone In A World Of Wounds“ ist reich an derlei Details.

Auch „Distance“ schlägt die Brücke zur Vergangenheit: Die getragene Strophe erinnert an „Valley Of The Moon“ von „A Grave Is A Grim Horse“ und ist das einzige Stück mit Drums. Wie ein Trauerzug fließt das Stück und hat auch und setzt Akzente mit einen Bläsereinsatz, der den Atem raubt. Mit dem knapp achtminütigen „Calling Down The Darkness“ schafft STEVE VON TILL den vielleicht berührendsten Moment in seiner ganzen Karriere. Das Stück verbindet seine neue Art des Ambient-Songwritings mit den folkigen Elementen der Vergangenheit am stimmigsten. Das Cello und der wundervolle Gesang rühren hier zu Tränen, das Finale, in dem Cello, Pedal Steel und Synthesizer zusammen arrangiert eine subtile Symphonie ergeben, geht tief ins Herz. Denn hier werden die Worte, die VON TILL singt, gelebt: „It is the nature of loss that binds is“, ist noch so eine Zeile, die sich einnistet. Manchmal wissen wir Menschen erst, dass wir zusammengehören im Angesicht von Trauer und Verlust. Und wenn diese unterschiedlichen Instrumente so stimmig harmonieren können, warum nicht auch die Menschheit mit all ihren unterschiedlichen Stärken?

Ein heilsames Werk: „Alone In A World Of Wounds“ steckt voller Kraft, gerade weil STEVE VON TILL eine kollektive Trauer heraufbeschwört.

Dass „Alone In A World Of Wounds“ es in der Folge schwer haben würde, diese Intensität zu behalten, scheint STEVE VON TILL zu wissen, deshalb nimmt das Album schließlich eine Wendung. „The Dawning Of The Day (Insomnia)“ als rezitiertes Gedicht mit stimmungsvollem Klavier und Cello wirkt frei und lebendig. Der größere Bruch kommt mit „Old Bent Pine“: Hier trifft STEVE VON TILL auf HARVESTMAN, trippy Synthesizer und Delaygitarren umgarnen sich, der Gesang wird wie im Traum darüber gelegt. Ein schönes Stück, das dennoch im Vergleich zum restlichen Album ein wenig abfällt. Am Ende fängt sich STEVE VON TILL mit dem betörend schönen „River Of No Return“ indes wieder, selbst wenn es kein Happy End liefert. „Alone In A World Of Wounds“ ist ein Album, das Fragen über das Verlorensein aufwirft, und somit fühlt es sich am Ende auch an, als würde man alleine auf einem offenen Feld erwachen, an einem nebeligen Morgen, an dem noch nicht klar ist, ob sich die Sonne noch zeigen wird.

Es ist ein grausamer Witz: Die Götter gaben den Menschen das Feuer, um im Dunkeln zu sehen, auch wenn sie sich selbst damit auslöschten. Oder war und ist es gar die ultimative Prüfung? Was die Menschen auch erhielten, oder viel mehr selbst erfanden, war die Sprache. Es darf nicht vergessen werden, dass Musik ebenso ein Teil der menschlichen Sprache ist. Wie heißt es so schön: Man nicht nicht kommunizieren.„Alone In A World Of Wounds“ ist ein Album, dessen Message auch klar wäre, hätte STEVE VON TILL es als Instrumentalwerk veröffentlicht. Sein siebtes Soloalbum zeigt ihn als gereiften Komponisten, der in der Lage ist, sich kurzzufassen, ohne an Intensität einzubüßen, im richtigen Moment aber loslässt und die bekannten epischen Momente erzeugt. Der Weg seit „No Wilderness Deep Enough“ wird dabei weiter beschritten, STEVE VON TILL vergisst aber auch nicht die Folk- und Americana-Basis seiner Soloarbeit. In beinahe jedem Song berührt der US-Amerikaner tief und stellt große Fragen. Wer sich ihnen stellt, könnte Trauer erfahren, aber auch die Hoffnung, dass es vielleicht noch die Chance gibt, mit den Sünden der Vergangenheit aufzuräumen. Beides ist gleichermaßen heilsam.
