Pete Burns lived in extremis, not by volume or spectacle alone, but in the way he fractured and recomposed the cultural image of the pop star. In Dead Or Alive: Here’s Looking At You, Moonboy Publications and photographer Paul Cox resurrect those ruptures, offering 314 images: rare, raw, radiant, where the human body is both stage and manifesto. Burns was “feminine, masculine, vulnerable, fierce and beautiful,” all at once, and Cox’s lens reminds us that contradiction was the very essence of his coherence.

What strikes immediately is the visual audacity: post-New Romantic gloss meeting punk’s skeletal core, but swathed in couture that rejected safety and begged confrontation. Westwood and Galliano dress the body like armour, yet Burns wears them as an arsenal of ideas. Here the politics of appearance precede the politics of discourse. Before the lexicon of non-binary identity had entered the mainstream, Burns had already made himself a living pronoun, shifting, refusing capture, staking territory in television studios, magazine covers, and clubs alike. Cox frames this not as mere spectacle but as declaration.

The photographer himself acknowledges the paradox: “Photo shoots with Pete Burns and Dead or Alive were fun, chaotic, and always a challenge,” he says. “Between Pete and me, we created some visually striking images.”  In the pages, we see not only the gloss of Smash Hits covers or the neon dazzle of music video sets, but quieter fragments: Pete with his parents, annotations on contact sheets, the scrawl of a hand unguarded. These inclusions transform the book into something less retrospective than reliquary.

Burns’ fame was both concentrated and diffuse. You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) still orbits global memory and lights up dance floors; its 40th anniversary underscoring the song’s enduring legacy. Yet Cox’s photographs situate the hit inside a larger cultural matrix, where the so-called minor gestures: poses, garments, glances, were equal agents of disruption. A session with Morrissey, captioned as “The Very Odd Couple,” embodies this perfectly: two figures from opposite poles of British pop, converging, sparring, laughing, uneasy, yet immortalised.

The broader context is crucial. Paul Cox’s career arcs across late 20th-century music photography: Bolan, Bowie, Siouxsie, Cocteau Twins, Boy George…yet Burns remains singular. Perhaps because he understood more deeply than most that to be photographed is to be written into the world’s eye, and that survival depends on controlling the script of visibility.

Moonboy presents the book as a limited-edition object: 224 pages, 314 photos (see some samples at the end of this article), dust jacket with Matrix emboss, inserts of posters and bookmarks. This book celebrates the revival of a body and a style that prefigured today’s cultural debates. In Burns’ gaze, arch, amused, unyielding, we encounter a demand that the present has yet to answer.

This care is recognition that the archive must resist dilution. At a time when image circulates endlessly, stripped of aura, such material presence matters. Susan Sontag once insisted in On Photography that photographs are “inexhaustible invitations to deduction, speculation, and fantasy.” Cox’s images, sequenced and contextualised here, remind us that Burns was himself an inexhaustible invitation: perpetually becoming, never reducible.

Nehedar’s latest work unfurls like a cracked mirror, each shard reflecting artist Emilia Cataldo’s restless intelligence and sly humour – like hearing Liz Phair swap secrets with Tracy Bonham over a midnight snack, while Letters to Cleo crash in from the next room with the chorus. From her New York apartment (half sanctuary, half laboratory), she fashions a set of songs that balance philosophical rigour with unruly play. What begins as an act of home production becomes a symposium of contradictions: sardonic and tender, analytic yet instinctive, deeply personal but shot through with cultural satire.

Enantiodromia opens the door with a wink and a grimace, a carnival of clowns and closets circling into the abyss. Its sense of duality feels lived-in, not academic: the sound of an artist confronting her own doubles and doppelgängers, laughing even as the abyss glares back. That same fascination with equilibrium drives Power Starfish, a paean to imperfection where science and philosophy are bent into rhyme; a sing-song child’s voice offers an effervescent counterweight to Cataldo’s searching tone: domestic chaos turned metaphysical dialogue.

Cataldo thrives in compressing the infinite into the everyday. Do What Makes U U bursts out like a manifesto scrawled on a napkin, over in a blink but etched in memory. Career Day, by contrast, lingers in the hangover of adulthood, a lament for recognition sung while the city scrolls past. Between these poles sits Revenge, Or Lack Thereof, dismantling the morality play of vengeance with wit sharp enough to draw blood and empathy soft enough to stem the flow.

Her satire blooms into the absurd with Coworkers, a sitcom broadcast from a lonely cubicle, where snacks and existential dread share billing. Misery Loves Company trades mockery for stoic independence, a refusal to join the chorus. By the time we arrive at Heard Morality and S.M.U.G., the gloves are off: Cataldo skewers herd instinct and hollow rebellion with a snarl disguised as a grin, her voice both accuser and accomplice.

The record is haunted by the community’s failures and the individual’s fragile stubbornness. Heaven’s Gatekeeping rails against the small cruelties of envy and exclusion, exposing the price of belonging. #1 Fan sketches obsession in intimate strokes, turning the gaze back on the artist herself. Even the briefest interludes —Patience as a whispered plea, Literally Anything as a lullaby —remind us that brevity can sting as much as grandeur.

Nehedar’s collaborations: cello, drums, child, visual sync films, adding texture without diluting the core: Cataldo confronting the paradoxes of living, parenting, aging, and resisting. The songs glow with the strange energy of someone working alone yet speaking to a crowd. What’s left is an album that thinks aloud, jokes bitterly, aches privately, and still finds room to sing. A record of ideas transformed into encounters, where philosophy is not a lecture but a theatre, lived through voice and verse.

In Tbilisi, where history still trembles in the concrete, DEAdpILOT stands as if tuning their instruments to the voltage of buried machines. Their new video for Shadow Walking Dopamine is another dispatch from the subterranean corridors of the post-Soviet underground: a blurred hymn to decay, desire, and disorientation.

The duo, Jack Hubbell and Saladin (Sunny), are alchemists of corrosion, fusing gothic post-punk, Eastern Bloc new wave, and electronic industrial into a sound that quivers with tension. This is music as circuitry and memory, each bassline a low hum of electricity, each vocal phrase a confession refracted in fractured glass.

The video mirrors that same mood. Shot originally on high-definition gear, the production was sabotaged by its own polish. The band, rejecting the crisp gloss of modern cinema, dragged the footage backwards through time, smearing it onto VHS until it acquired the battered aura of lost reels and clandestine screenings.

“There’s a specific look that Euro underground films from the 70s and 80s have — Soviet and Western alike. Things like DECODER or Dead Mountaineer’s Hotel,” explains Hubbell. “Re-transferring to VHS gave us the aesthetic we were really after.”

This act of deliberate distortion reshapes the material. The video stars Gvantsa Rekhviashvili and Michael Ninua, with their movements cutting between a band performance and portraits of vice: theft, graffiti, drugs, cheap liquor, and anonymous drifting through late-night streets. These fragments, held in the static blur of VHS, recall the phantom cinema of Fassbinder’s shadows or Tarkovsky’s damp stairwells. The work darts between faces and gestures until the ordinary becomes ominous, the banal suffused with dread. There are heavy nods to the 1927 silent film Metropolis, particularly in recreations of scenes of the Evil Maria at the mercy of leering men; her innocence dismantled by greed and lust. This juxtaposition of class and corruption transforms the video into a parable of collapse, where dopamine is pursued across neon-lit bars and damp walls, yet the desire remains unsatisfied. The blurred lens reveals more than the crisp could: vices as rituals, gestures as wounds, longing as residue.

Shadow Walking Dopamine bleeds time, reminding us that post-punk was always about ghosts of machines and the flesh that feeds them. DEAdpILOT locate an aesthetic honesty: that beauty, here, is best glimpsed through interference, decay, and the drone of an unstable signal. What remains is an image of modern Georgia refracted through analogue ruin, a project that knows nostalgia is never innocent; it is a distortion, and a strange kind of truth.

The song feels like it’s forever on the brink: alive with nervous electricity…and with questions. Touch is offering a confrontation with self-image, vulnerability, and the pressure to appear unbreakable in public. There are moments in her delivery that echo Annie Lennox’s regal poise, flashes of Aimee Mann’s weary candor, and the raw, unflinching presence of PJ Harvey.

The lyrics circle around longing, surrender, and spiritual searching. They voice a plea for love, forgiveness, and guidance, mingling devotion with desire. A sense of vulnerability collides with fire and urgency, moving between submission, betrayal, and transcendence, anchored by the repeated quest for light, love, and affirmation of life.

“My music, my achievements, my appearance…sometimes it feels like an endless performance under a spotlight, unsure of how to truly present myself,” she remarks. That uncertainty fuels the urgency in her voice.

The video, directed by Nea Gumprech, sharpens that theme to a near claustrophobic intensity. A lone spotlight isolates Touch, clad in a leather trench coat. The light is harsh, unforgiving, invasive even. Yet she stands in it, daring it to reveal every crease, every hesitation. In that confrontation, you see the heart of Anthem.

“In the video, I imagined myself as a woman performing her song, a little messy, late at night in a bar, watched by people I can’t see,” she says. “Like on social media: the gaze is there, but it’s invisible. The lights are on me, but I appear distant. Like the moon quietly watching the earth, still connected, yet far away. I may seem lost in the room, but in reality, it’s my safe space. I’m in my music. Even when I dance in your spotlight, I always belong to myself.”

It’s a remarkable statement, and the song delivers on that promise. The synths dart and jab, restless and tense, while her voice pushes back with strength and vulnerability in equal measure. What results is music that thrives in the tension between exposure and privacy, between spectacle and sanctuary.

Der Track stammt von der EP „Banished Into Endless Chaos“, die am 21. Februar 2025 via High Roller Records veröffentlicht wurde. Darauf zu hören ist das erste neue Material seit dem 2019er Album „By Ancient Force„.

Bereits vor einigen Monaten teilte die Band auch einen Clip zu  „Looking Into The Fire“ bei YouTube.

„Banished Into Endless Chaos“ ist die erste Veröffentlichung der Berliner Band mit ihrem neuen Sänger Jaguars Claw. 2025 soll ein komplettes Album folgen.

„Wir geben gerne neue Zutaten zu unseren Songs, behalten aber den Grundgeschmack bei“, erklärt Gitarrist Butch. „Seit unserem letzten Album  haben wir viel dazugelernt, was wir mit dieser EP umsetzen. Die größte Veränderung sind natürlich die Vocals. Wir wollen uns mit dem neuen Album außerdem mehr auf kürzere und brutalere Punk-Songs im Stil unseres ersten Albums konzentrieren, gleichzeitig aber auch längere experimentelle und metallischere Songs liefern.“

FALLUJAH haben den Nachfolger ihres 2022er Album „Empyrean“ veröffentlicht: Das sechste Album der Progressive Death Metal-Band heißt „Xenotaph“  und erschien am 13. Juni 2025. Jetzt hat die Gruppe nochmals ein Musikvideo nachgelegt: „The Obsidian Architect“ bei YouTube.

Im April stellte die Band ein Video zu „Labyrinth Of Stone“ und damit die zweite Single von „Xenotaph“ vor. Mit „Kaleidoscopic Waves“ haben FALLUJAH im März den ersten Track ihres neuesten Albums im Netz veröffentlicht.

Sänger Kyle Schaefer erklärt, wie sich „Xenotaph“ von den anderen FALLUJAH-Album unterscheidet:

„Dies ist unser ehrgeizigstes Album und das technischste, dynamischste und progressivste Material der Band bis heute. Die Musik dieser acht Tracks ist mit ambitionierten Texten verknüpft, einer Geschichte, die sich über verschiedene Zeit- und Realitätsebenen in einer jenseitigen Existenz nach dem Tod erstreckt. Wie habennoch nie so eng zusammengearbeitet wie für ‚Xenotaph‘, mit dem breiten Inputs des aktuellen Line-ups konnten wir unsere Songwritings erweitern und allen Beteiligten gerecht werden.

‚Kaleidoscopic Waves‘ ist perfekt, um die neue Ära von Fallujah einzuläuten. Er verbindet Atmosphäre und unseren technischen Anspruch, erreicht aber auch ein neues Level Melodik.  Wir wollten weitergehen als bislang, es ist schwer, die enorme Bandbreite unseres neuen Albums mit einem einzigen Song vollständig zu erfassen, aber ‚Kaleidoscopic Waves‘ ist ein guter Anfang.“

Am 29. August 2025 veröffentlichten MÉLANCOLIA ihr neues Album „random.access.misery“. Nach „Picking Scabs“ stellen die Australier nun einen weiteren Track daraus vor: „Lithia“ enthält darüber hinaus ein Gastfeature von Hunter Young (MOODRING).

Ihr neues Album „The Ship // The Sea“ haben BEASTWARS für 7. November 2025 angekündigt. Erscheinen wird die Platte via Destroy Records auf Vinyl sowie digital.

Wie sich das neue Material anhört, verrät die Single „Levitate“ (Audiostream via bandcamp).

Produziert wurde „The Ship // The Sea“ von James Goldsmith (auch Mix) und Nathan Hickey. Das Mastering übernahm Will Borza. Das Ölgemälde auf dem Frontcover gestaltete Nick Keller.

Die Sludge / Noise-Band BELIEVE IN NOTHING hat mit „Gut“ eine weitere Single ihres kommenden Albums „Rot“ veröffentlicht. Es ist das erste Album der Briten aus Eastbourne und wurde von Wayne Adams gemixt und gemastert. Release-Termin ist der 31. Oktober 2025 via Church Road Records.

Davor hat die Band nach dem Song „What Would You Do?„, dem Video-Clip zu „Complete Desolation“ und dem Song „Fist Full Of Worms“ mit „Boiling Stone“ eine weitere neue Single veröffentlicht.

Die englische Cinematic Progressive Djent-Band VANITAS hat nach „Your Demise„, „Lucid Dreams“ und „Eclipse“ mit „Solaire“ eine weitere Single mitsamt Video-Clip ihres neuen Albums „Journey To The Sun“ veröffentlicht.

Die Death Metal-Band GLORIOUS DEPRAVITY hat einen Labeldeal bei Transcending Obscurity Records unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen werden die US-Amerikaner aus New York ihr neues Album „Death Never Sleeps“ veröffentlichen. Es ist nach „Ageless Violence“ (2020) das zweite Album der 2017 gegründeten Band rund um Sänger Doug Moore (PYRRHON, SCARCITY, SEPUTUS).

„Death Never Sleeps“ wird am 7. November 2025 erscheinen. Vorab gibt es den Track „The Devouring Dust“ zu hören.

Mit „Between Dream And Nightmare“ ist am 15. Juli 2025 das neue Album der Gothic Metal-Band RAINOVER erschienen. Es ist nach „Transcending The Blue And Drifting Into Rebirth“ (2014) und „Nox“ (2020) das dritte Album der Spanier aus Murcia.

Die Technical Death / Black Metal-Band IMEPERMANENCE hat mit „Anicca“ ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist das erste Album der Polen aus Krakau rund um Sänger Mateusz Bednarz (SIGHS OF DEATH, Ex-PANDRADOR) und wird am 16. Oktober 2025 via Satanath Records und Sanatorio Records erscheinen.

„“Anicca“ ist eine Hymne an die Zerbrechlichkeit, die unser Dasein kennzeichnet“, erläutert die Band. „Der Name des Albums stammt aus der buddhistischen Terminologie und bedeutet Vergänglichkeit. Die Texte beschäftigen sich mit Themen wie Vergänglichkeit und der Suche nach Sinn in der Welt um uns herum. Die Songs beginnen und enden mit dem Ticken einer Uhr, das den Anfang und das Ende der erzählten Geschichte deutlich markiert.“

„Anicca“ wurde mit einem Cover-Artwork von Alicja Michalec ausgestattet. Vorab gibt es zu „Sorrodise“ einen Video-Clip.

„“Sorrodise“ porträtiert die dunkle Seite des Lebenszyklus, zu dem jeder von uns gehört. Das Video, der Text und die Atmosphäre des Songs werfen still die Frage auf: Kann dieser Kreislauf jemals durchbrochen oder beendet werden?
