Obsession. That peculiar and unpredictable beast takes root in the fertile soil of our minds, winding its tendrils around every thought until the world is reframed through the lens of infatuation. Limerence, the intoxicating dance between reality and fantasy, sweeps us into its vortex, where rationality is cast aside, and the beloved becomes a deity in the shrine of our imaginations.

In this curious state, our minds enter a cyclical pattern, an endless loop of idealization and yearning. We dissect every interaction and replay every moment, seeking hidden meanings in the mundane. It’s a bizarre, freaky, and altogether naïve experience where the heart races and the palms sweat, and the object of our affection takes on an almost mythical significance.

This one-sided and idealist perspective is a heady mix of hope and delusion; a dream world where every glance is loaded with unspoken affection, every word a secret code. This madness feels too good to relinquish. It is a drug that numbs the edges of reality and offers a tantalizing glimpse into reciprocated desire, where the mundane is transfigured into the extraordinary.

Within this self-constructed reverie, however, there’s a fragility addressed in Julia Gaeta’s new dark pop track, Fragments of Pain. The highs are dizzying, yes, but the lows can be devastating. The object of our obsession, often blissfully unaware of the intensity of our feelings, remains a distant star, bright and unattainable. And so, we are left oscillating between the thrill of imagined possibilities and the despair of unfulfilled longing.

Fragments of Pain, sounding like the bridge between shoegaze and alternative rock, echoes the late 90s and early 2000s, encased in a stylish post-punk veneer. It’s an intriguing fusion where the alternative and gothic textures collide with a colossal chorus, drawing from the legacies of Killing Joke, Depeche Mode, Siouxsie, and Alice In Chains, all while nodding towards the infectious simplicity of 90s bubblegum pop and modern avant pop, as Gaeta explains in a recent interview. 

The music video, a collaboration between Gaeta, Clara Griot, and Estelle Walton, amplifies this hybrid aesthetic. Their visual narrative weaves together shadowy imagery with bursts of stark, emotive clarity, reflecting the track’s compelling interplay of darkness and melody. Here, the juxtaposition of influences creates a potent, almost paradoxical experience, embodying a sonic and visual dichotomy that is as arresting as it is nostalgic.

With her debut solo EP, Blur Divine, Paris-based American artist Julia Gaeta invites us into a nocturnal expanse, a realm where introspection meets the pulse of the dance floor in a collection of ‘unlove’ songs. Gaeta’s sophisticated dark pop intertwines with industrial undertones and a sultry edge, creating a sound that is both gritty and alluring.

Blur Divine explores the distorted perceptions and fractured realities of troubled love, draping these darker themes in a fragile, spectral glow. Gaeta masterfully balances the tension between the introspective and the groove-worthy, her music echoing through the twilight hours with a haunting resonance. It’s a work that finds beauty in the bleak, casting a ghostly luminescence on the shadows of romantic disillusionment.

Gaeta joined forces with LA-based producer Alex DeGroot, known for his work with Zola Jesus, for her album. Packed with powerful beats, warped synths, reverberating guitars, and Gaeta’s profound vocal range, Blur Divine hooks us swiftly and deeply, enticing us to tread a path into territories that are strangely recognizable yet uncharted.

Los Angeles industrial trio Fact Pattern, originally conceived in the early 2010s by the formidable Ian Flux, has evolved through various incarnations. Following the release of their 2017 EP Structures, they solidified their lineup and identity with the 2019 full-length debut Fallen Language. With influences like NIN, Skinny Puppy, and Type O Negative, the trio— Flux (vocals, guitars, keys, programming), Jack Lowd (bass, vocals), and Corey Hirsch (drums)—melds heavy guitars, rhythmic drumming, and bass with metallic samples, crafting a sound that’s both intense and hauntingly mechanical.

Their latest single, Incompatible, released via Re:Mission Entertainment, is a stark critique of unhealthy coping mechanisms, particularly through religion and spirituality. The lyrics convey frustration and a desire to confront uncomfortable truths, asserting that personal beliefs are mere constructs incompatible with the natural laws of the universe.

The song explores themes of existential dissonance and the elusive search for truth, depicting a world where claimed understanding lacks genuine proof, leading to destructive outcomes. Amidst this turmoil, the speaker’s concern for their kin is paramount, symbolized by a house built on sorrow’s fragile foundation.

The DIY video captures the band’s infectious energy, showcasing a spirited performance bathed in dramatic lighting. The interplay of shadows and light accentuates their dynamic presence, which echoes the intensity of their music. It’s a striking portrayal of the raw power and emotion that define Fact Pattern’s sound.

Am gestrigen Mittwoch (15.05.2024) herrschte im Westen von Dresden positiver Ausnahmezustand: RAMMSTEIN spielten bei bestem frühsommerrlichen Wetter auf dem Open Air-Gelände der sogenannten „Flutrinne“ am Ostragehege ihre erste Deutschland-Show der aktuellen Tour 2024. Über 50.000 Musikfans reisten an und fluteten für den Tag 1 von 4 das Stadtgebiet. Und hörte man sich um, so bleiben viele von ihnen auch länger, um an weiteren Konzerttagen dabei zu sein. An diesem ersten Abend hatten Kurzentschlossene übrigens sogar noch Chancen auf Restkarten. Für diese Tour haben die sechs Berliner ein Best-Of Set aus ihrer nun schon fast 30jährigen Bandgeschichte zusammengestellt.

Ich musste schon etwas überlegen und mir verwundert hinterm Ohr kratzen, als ich gelesen hatte, das „Papercuts“ die erste Greatest Hits- bzw. Best Of-Kopplung von LINKIN PARK sein soll?! Dem ist allerdings wirklich so und schon sehr erstaunlich, dass die Major Label-Industrie diese Abschöpfmöglichkeit nach dem weltweiten Mega-Erfolg der Band und dem tragischen Tod von Frontmann Chester Bennington bisher ungenutzt gelassen hat! Ich hatte zur Jahrtausendwende relativ zeitig die Gelegenheit, das großartige Hit-Potential der noch jungen New Metal-Band zu erkennen, da mir die WEA damals für unser BLACK eine Promo-CD von deren Debüt-Album „Hybrid Theory“ zugesendet hatte. Zwar war der Stilmix von LINKIN PARK zu dieser Zeit nicht wirklich neu und Bands wie zum Beispiel LIMP BIZKIT hatten auf diesen Sektor schon ordentlich vorgelegt, aber das hier hatte noch einmal eine andere Qualität und Frische. Die zwingend groovige Mischung aus scharfen Crossover-Gitarren-Riffs, Hip Hop-Beats und Electronica, gepaart mit Hardcore-Geschrei, Rap und melodisch klaren Gesang war absolut perfekt und ist es auch heute noch. Der verdiente Erfolg lies nicht lange auf sich warten und machte LINKIN PARK zu Superstars. Folgende Alben manifestierten diesen Status, bis 2017 Sänger Chester Selbstmord beging. Seit dem gab es zwar kein neues Material von LINKIN PARK, aber man hat sich auch nicht aufgelöst und will unbedingt weiter machen. Nachdem in den vergangenen Jahren die ersten beiden Alben „Hybrid Theory“ und „Meteora“ mit aufwendigen und umfangreichen Deluxe-Ausgaben gewürdigt wurden, verschafft „Papercuts“ der Band in ihrer aktuellen Findungsphase nun eine weitere Atempause. 20 Songs aus 23 Jahren sind dabei zusammengekommen und bieten geballte Hit-Power, die immer noch zündet. Neu darunter ist nur der letzte Track „Friendly Fire“, welches aus der Session zum „One More Light“-Album stammt und ein letztes Mal den Gesang von Chester Bennington bietet. „Papercuts“ ist ein fulminantes Hit-Feuerwerk, dessen teilweise schon über 20 Jahre alten Raketen noch immer Funken sprühen und ordentlich Radau machen! Die Irish Folk Rock-Band FIDDLER’S GREEN hat am 29. Dezember 2023 ihr mittlerweile 16. Studioalbum veröffentlicht. Die Platte trägt den Titel “The Green Machine” und ist das erste Album mit eigenem Material seit dem 2019er Werk “Heyday“. In der Zwischenzeit veröffentlichte man allerdings das Jubiläumswerk “3 Cheers For 30 Years” (2020), die Live-Platte “Acoustic Pub Crawl II – Live in Hamburg” (2020) sowie das Weihnachtsalbum “Seven Holy Nights” (2022).

Zuletzt hat die Gruppe mit “My Fairy Of The West” einen weiteren Song daraus ausgekoppelt – das zugehörige Musikvideo gibt es bei YouTube.

Die Metalcore-Band THE GLOOM IN THE CORNER hat ein neues Musikvideo veröffentlicht: “The Jericho Protocol” ist via YouTube abrufbar. Gemischt und gemastert hat den Song Jon Dolese. Inhaltlich basiert der Track auf der Kurzgeschichte “A Reflection; A Thousand Deaths”.

DIRKSCHNEIDER haben für 2025 eine Jubiläumstour angekündigt. Anlässlich des zurückliegenden 40-jährigen Jubiläums des ACCEPT-Albums “Balls To The Wall” (1983) will die Formation um Frontmann U.D.O. dessen Vergangenheit ins Zentrum rücken. Udo Dirkschneider erklärt:

„Ich freue mich wahnsinnig darauf, DEM Erfolgsalbum meiner Band ACCEPT nochmal Tribut zu zollen. Zusammen, mit Peter Baltes an meiner Seite, das Album ‘Balls To The Wall’ in seiner Gesamtheit auf die Bühne zu bringen, wird mit Sicherheit ein großes Highlight meiner Karriere!“

Die Progressive Rock-Band THE TANGENT hat am 10. Mai 2024 ihr neues Album “To Follow Polaris” veröffentlicht. Zum Release folgte auch ein Clip zum Track “The Fine Line” bei YouTube.

Eine zweite Single-Auskopplung steht ebenfalls bereit: “The Single” gibt es als Clip bei YouTube. Den ersten Vorab-Song findet man online: “The North Sky” bei YouTube.

Entstanden ist die Platte diesmal allerdings im Alleingang: Verantwortlich zeichnet für “To Follow Polaris” allein Bandkopf Andy Tillison, da seine Bandkollegen in den zuückliegenden Monaten anderweitig eingebunden waren. Den Einfluss der Band soll man aber dennoch hören:

“Ich hätte diese Platte nicht machen können, ohne die Erfahrungen mit der Band gemacht zu haben. Obwohl die verschiedenen Instrumente nicht im Stil der normalen Besetzung gespielt werden, sind sie von den Dingen inspiriert, die diese Jungs machen.”

“To Follow Polaris” erscheint via InsideOut Music auf CD, Vinyl sowie digital. Aufgenommen und produziert wurde die Scheibe ebenfalls von Andy Tillison.

Die Doom-Band OLD HORN TOOTH stellt ihr neues Album “Mourning Light” mit einer ersten Single vor: Den Titeltrack kann man sich u.a. via bandcamp anhören. Das Trio erklärt hierzu:

„Dieses besondere Lied erforscht die bittersüßen Erinnerungen und die versteckte Traurigkeit, die mit dem Verlust einhergehen, und bietet gleichzeitig einen Blick auf die mögliche Hoffnung im ‚Trauerlicht‘. Auf seiner Reise von düsterer Verzweiflung bis hin zur endgültigen Akzeptanz verdeutlicht es die gemeinsame Trauer und den Trost in der Verletzlichkeit.“

BAEST haben mit “Imp Of The Perverse” einen neuen Song samt Video online gestellt. Anfang des Jahres erschien zudem “Colossus“, zu dem Track gibt es auch ein Video bei YouTube.

Die britische Metalcore-Band POLAR meldet sich nach größerem Line-up-Umbruch mit einer neuen Single zurück: “We Won’t Sleep” gibt es in Bild und Ton bei YouTube.

Außerdem kommt die Gruppe im Juni 2024 für vier Konzerte nach Deutschland. Angesetzt sind Shows in Bochum, Leipzig, München sowie Frankfurt.

Es soll niemand sagen, JINJER seien nicht lernfähig. Nach dem vierminütigen Intro der letzten Live-Platte „Alive In Melbourne“ (2020) halten sich die Ukrainer diesmal etwas kürzer. Dass der Auftakt mit fast drei Minuten immer noch deutlich zu lang ausfällt, ist wenigstens schnell vergessen, wenn der Opener „Sit, Stay, Rollover“ erstmal mit richtig viel Power losholzt. Hier zahlt sich einmal mehr die langjährige Zusammenarbeit der Band mit Max Morton aus, dessen Mix wie schon in der Vergangenheit transparent und natürlich bleibt, ohne bei der Durchschlagskraft Zugeständnisse machen zu müssen.

In dieser Hinsicht steht der 2022er Mitschnitt aus dem „The Wiltern“-Club in Los Angeles dem vorherigen Live-Dokument in nichts nach. Klammert man den zugehörigen Video-Mitschnitt auf DVD/BluRay aus, stellt sich somit primär die Frage des Mehrwerts. Immerhin liegen gerade einmal drei Jahre und ein Studioalbum zwischen den Aufzeichnungen, deren Setlisten sich darüber hinaus ganze neun Stücke teilen.

JINJER servieren uns mit “Live In Los Angeles” eine authentische und fast makellose Aufzeichnen
Auf der Haben-Seite stehen derweil natürlich die diversen Tracks des aktuellen Werks „Wallflowers“ (2021), die gerade der Live-Performance JINJERs durch ihre teils sperrigen und unberechenbaren Wendungen eine sagenhafte Intensität verleihen. So sorgen „Copycat“, „Call Me A Symbol“ oder „As I Boil Ice” für das Grobe, wohingegen Klassiker à la “I Speak Astronomy” und „Perennial” die progressive Seite der Formation hervorkehren. Hier brilliert auch Sängerin Tatiana Shmayluk, die mit dem tighten Fundament ihrer Mitstreiter aber auch die bestmögliche Bühne präsentiert bekommt.

Exakt unter diesen Gesichtspunkten lässt „Live In Los Angeles“ folglich nichts vermissen, zumal auch das Publikum im Verlaufe der Show durchaus präsent ist und so für die richtige Atmosphäre sorgen darf. Isoliert betrachtet servieren uns JINJER somit einen fast makellosen und umfassenden Mitschnitt, der vielleicht aufgrund seines Vorgängers den Wow-Faktor vermissen lässt, doch ansonsten gerade bei den kleinen Dingen nochmals zugelegt hat – und wenn es sich dabei nur um einen leicht kürzeren Intro-Track handelt.

JINJER haben ihr Konzert am 22. Dezember 2022 im Club “The Wiltern” in Los Angeles gefilmt – der Mitschnitt wird nun als DVD/BluRay veröffentlicht. “Live in Los Angeles” ist das zweite Live-Album der Band aus der Ukraine und erscheint am 17. Mai 2024 via Napalm Records. Einen Vorgeschmack bietet der Clip zu “Home Back” bei YouTube.

Auch einen Mitschnitt von “Pisces” gibt es bei YouTube. Als ersten Appetizer haben JINJER zudem ein Live-Video „Call Me A Symbol” bei YouTube geteilt.

Für JINJER fängt “Live in Los Angeles” eine ganz besondere Show ein:

„Die ausverkaufte Show in Los Angeles am Ende unserer Tournee 2022 war der perfekte Zeitpunkt und Ort, um etwas Besonderes zu machen – so etwas wie eine lang erwartete DVD/Live-Album von JINJER! Die Griechen ROTTING CHRIST blicken auf eine 35 -jährige Bandgeschichte zurück und präsentieren diese Tage ihr 14. Studioalbum “Pro Xristoy”. Die Helenen um Frontmann Sakis Tolis haben sich einen Namen in der Szene gemacht mit Alben wie “A Dead Poem”, “Kata Ton Daimona Eytoy” oder “The Heretics”.

ROTTING CHRIST – der Monolith in der extremen Metalszene
Die Brüder Sakis und Themis stehen mittlerweile wie ein Monolith in der extremen Metalszene. Ging es anfangs noch in Richtung Death Metal, so ist der Sound der Helenen nun um einiges düsterer und mit Chören versehen. Eine Mischung aus melodischem Schwarzmetall und Gothic Metal könnte man meinen. Doch wie sich das neue Album anhört, erfährt ihr nun hier.

Das Intro “Pro Xristoy” bedeutet auf Griechisch “bevor Christus” und baut in seinen eineinhalb Minuten Spielzeit Spannung auf. Sakis übt sich in Spoken Word Lyrics und ein Chor unterstreicht die düstere Stimmung. In dieser Tonart geht es auch im ersten richtigen Titel “The Apostate” weiter. Sehr atmosphärisch und vom Tempo her langsam werden hier Doom-Anleihen laut. Bei diesem Titel und bei “Ygdrassil” beziehen sich ROTTING CHRIST auf historische Figuren, wie Flavius Claudius Julianus und auf die Könige der nordischen Mythologie, was in die Pagan Richtung geht.

ROTTING CHRIST erfinden sich neu und bleiben sich treu
“Like Father, Like Son” kommt mit einer mitreißenden Melodie daher und überzeugt im ROTTING CHRIST-Stil. Man könnte beinahe sagen, im neuen Stil. Denn die letzten Veröffentlichungen der Griechen sind atmosphärisch, langsam und mit Chören versehen. Doch die Titel haben ausnahmslos alle einen hohen Wiedererkennungswert und überzeugen durch musikalischer Reife. Egal ob die Nummer mit “Pix La Sax” einen etwas seltsamen Namen hat. Das Quartett geht gerne extrem düster und dunkel ans Werk, die schnellen Parts sind rar gesät. So zum Beispiel im Titel “The Rarewell”.

Ja es ist schwierig, nach 35 Jahren Musik-Business nicht auf der Stelle zu treten und die Griechen tun das auf keinen Fall. Als Bonus sind auf der Digipack Version des Albums noch zwei zusätzliche Bonustraks vorhanden. ROTTING CHRIST wissen genau, was ihre Fans erwarten und erfüllen diese Haltung mit Bravour. Kein Frage “Pro Xristoy” ist ein gelungenes Werk geworden, das man gerne den ganzen Tag hört. Doch mir fehlen ein wenig die Höhepunkte, die herausstechen.

Die tschechische Brutal Death Metal-Band CUTTERRED FLESH hat nach den Tracks “Amanda” und “Descent Into Torment Of Abyssal Whispers” und dem Lyric-Video zu “Human Protein Concentrate” nun auch den Opener “Xenomorphic Annihilation: Earth Ravaged” von ihrem kommenden Album “Love At First Bite” veröffentlicht. Das Album, das mit einem Cover-Artwork von Par Olofsson (u.a. für ABORTED tätig) ausgestattet wurde, folgt auf das jüngste und fünfte Album “Sharing is Caring” (2021) und wird am 24. Mai 2024 via Transcending Obscurity Records erscheinen.

Zuvor ist mit “The Symptoms Of Parasite” eine erste Single mitsamt Lyric-Video erschienen. Inhaltlich folgt der Song der Sci-Fi-Reihe “Legie” von den Autoren Frantisek Kotleta und Krystína Snegonova. Aufgenommen wurde der Song von Kristian Kohle und Kai Stahlenberg im Kohlekeller Studio.

CUTTERRED FLESH sind Sänger Jiri Krs (PANDEMIA), die Gitarristen Vitali Novak (PANDEMIA) und David Krombholz, Bassist Zdenek Hnizdil sowie Drummer Frantisek Drazdansky.

Mit “Deal In Steel” wird am 24. Mai 2024 via Metalizer Records das neue Album der Heavy / Thrash Metal-Band REVEREND HOUND erscheinen. Es ist nach “Beyond Savagery” (2009) und “Release the Hounds” (2015) das dritte Album der Bayern aus München.

“Deal In Steel” wurde von Dan Baune gemixt und gemastert und mit einem Cover-Artwork von Joel Sánchez Rosales ausgestattet. Vorab gibt es mit “Days of Wrath” einen Video-Clip.
